The Downton Abbey effect The highly anticipated and aptly titled film ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ certainly heralded a new era of late 1920s fashion. Never underestimate the influence of a popular film’s fashion on being copied for today’s market. Set on the glamorous and more daring Riviera, styles are inspired from the silent movie era and Chanel’s holiday attire. In the first TV series of Downton Abbey, we were treated to typical classic tweeds so recognised as UK fashion; tweeds became the look and were sold in various forms worldwide as people wanted to imitate this classy look.
