T Time ime ffor or tax tax rreform eform – part part 2 Last month I suggested that maybe now was the right time for the most significant tax reform in more than a generation. The need to fund the government’s pandemic support programme was a golden opportunity to change the way our tax system works. But did the Chancellor ‘grasp the nettle’ with his announcement last month? Of course he didn’t.

T The he ttax ax w will ill a apply pply tto ow wages ages a att a almost lmost e every very llevel evel Instead, hiding behind the Prime Minister making the announcement, the Chancellor bottled it. He came up with a 1.25% levy that everyone will pay on top of whatever tax and national insurance they currently hand over. It will apply to wages at almost every level, selfemployed profits and dividends. To make things worse, businesses will have to pay an additional 1.25% levy as part of their employers’ national insurance payments too – ju st a t a ti me wh en the y ne e d he l p i n g e tt i ng back on their feet following the withdrawal last month of furlough and self-employment grants.

Increasing Increasing tthese hese rrates ates p penalises enalises tthe he generation g eneration o off w wealth ealth The Chancellor has fallen into the same trap as others before him. Increase the rates of the main tax earners – employment and profits taxes – and it’s bound to swell the coffers isn’t it? I argue differently. Increasing these rates penalises the generation of wealth, whether it’s business growth or spendable personal income. It has a negative rather than a positive effect. Instead of tinkering with the rates of tax, which incidentally the government said they wouldn’t do when elected, Rishi Sunak should have looked at the areas of the tax system that don’t raise as much as income and employment taxes. Increases in those areas would re-balance where his money comes from and the overall tax take would rise much more quickly than through tinkering with the rates. Do I want the Chancellor’s job? Certainly not, but he can definitely do better. Page 4

A Autumn utumn forecast forecast Leggings L eggings

We all know meteorologists have a hard time predicting long-term forecasts; fortunately the fashion world is often a lot more accurate about what the future season holds. You might have noticed shops are now full of autumn/winter wear, and have been for some time. Fashion seasons are always on display early, but don’t hesitate for long if you have an eye on a special item, as outerwear is generally snapped up early in the season. The following are some examples of what you can expect to see on the catwalk and in shops this season, from colour to style.

Lilac L ilac This is the predominant shade this autumn/winter season; from soft lilacs to pinks and purples, these shades are flattering for most skin tones. River Island has a lovely 1970s swing style dress in various lilac shades with feathers on the cuffs for £50. Falling just above the knee, this style is perfect for a ‘dressy’ occasion.

Puffer P uffer jjackets ackets Every high-end designer is showing a quilted style puffer jacket this season. These are not like the bulky jackets of old t h a t w e r e n o t v e r y f l a tt e r i n g – instead, they are much more fitted, some are belted, and they come in a range of colours, which makes a change from the standard black or blue. Designer jackets are of course The Local Answer

pricey, but where they go the high street is sure to follow, so you will soon find what you are looking for at a fraction of the price.

Biker B iker jackets jackets Like puffer jackets, these are everywhere. What was thought last year to be a one-off has now become a staple fashion item, worn with dresses and skirts, as well as trousers and jeans. This is certainly the ‘go to’ jacket for between seasons. Leather is taking a back seat to make room for faux leather, faux suede and man-made material biker jackets. Leather often has little stretch so the size must be spot on, whereas faux versions have a lot more give and are often washable. To advertise call 01242 510500

After spending so much time at home, we are used to being more relaxed and comfortable, and are reluctant to return to more restrictive styles of dressing. Leggings are extremely popular, as people find them comfortable and easy to wear. Now they have become a popular, staple item, some of the more expensive brands are manufacturing their lines with more durable materials. This helps to ensure sagging at the knee does not happen, as well as the material going see through after two washes. If you want a long-lasting legging, it’s perhaps better to spend that little extra for good quality. Whatever you choose, pair them with an oversized jumper for perfect autumn/winter fashion. Ponchos also give good coverage when paired with leggings.

Trousers T rousers If leggings or slim fit jeans are not your style, then you can relax, as most designers are showing wide leg, flowing trousers alongside very sheer tops. In fact, look out for lots of sheer fabrics in most ranges. I’m not sure how successful this look will be on the average person, but when shown on recent catwalks it certainly did draw attention, which of course is the name of the game. Heavier material trousers go well with a sheer top to balance out the look. Experiment and enjoy the seasonal new look. Page 

Performance Performance monitoring monitoring Whether you are a weekend warrior or a competitive sportsperson, the pressure is always on to perform better, win or achieve at the highest level of your sport or activity. Over the past 25-30 years, there has been a rapid increase in the application of sport science and technology to the arena of performance, as well as recreational sport and fitness. Access to good coaching, recovery protocols, decent equipment and facilities, appropriate nutrition, a strong work ethic and good genetic potential are all important ingredients, which do not operate in isolation. However, it has become more evident that performance monitoring technology is an important bridge between the science and reality of training and preparing for performance. As a coach, I’m often asked about the best tech gadgets by my clients. It can be quite overwhelming and probably more so when you don’t have the requisite knowledge to make an informed decision. While your budget and performance requirements are probably the best determinants, for the majority of people, being able to measure heart rate output and time-distancespeed are probably the most important parameters.

Combining C ombining rreal-time eal-time a and nd p post ost a activity ctivity d data ata Technology can provide the more serious recreational athlete with game changing value through the combination of realtime and post activity data to help monitor effort, progress and performance.

This information can then be used to make informed decisions about future training and nutrition/recovery needs. The various components of performance monitoring and analysis (e.g. GPS enabled watches and pedometers, as well as apps and programs which drive the technology) have the capability to calculate and capture a range of performance metrics in real time, to store, interpret and evaluate, and to download to a cloud or other device for the user to determine next steps.

Common m Common metrics etrics to to cconsider onsider ttracking racking Here are some of the more common metrics which the average person might wish to capture as part of their training and development for performance or recreational sport: • Heart rate monitoring: enables you to monitor work rate and training load, and manage fatigue. • Testing and assessment: sport specific and general fitness applications.

• Wellness monitoring: being able to monitor mental and physical wellbeing (sleep, nutrition, mental-emotional states, etc.) and training loads to ensure maximum performance. For more advanced athletes, where spending a bit more mo n e y o n p e r fo r ma n c e m o n i t oring technology is of benefit, here are some additional metrics to consider: • Load metrics: multi-dimensional forces (e.g. collisions, jump speed, muscle force output), cardiovascular endurance and metabolic output. • File and media sharing: benefits long-term tracking and management of injury risk profiles. • Workout builders: use of recorded metrics to produce future training plans. By learning and understanding the variety and uses of available sport science and technology, there are multiple performance and injury reduction benefits to be gained for all types of performers.

Motoring M otoring w with ith T Toby oby A Aiken iken

E Evoque voque evolved? evolved? When I started writing motoring reviews, the (then) relatively new Evoque was one of my first. I remember being quite excited to be driving a new Range Rover. There were a few niggles with it, but nothing insurmountable. If my memory serves me, the sat nav was woeful and the automatic gearbox not quite the standard you’d expect from a premium marque, but the drive was definitely on a par with the reputation. Fast forward to the convertible and things had moved on. The infotainment system was lifted from the partnership with Jaguar and the gearbox was much improved too. A lack of boot space was perhaps the third issue with the first gen model… clearly that wasn’t going to improve with a drop top version, but at the same time, my frame of reference had changed. In 2015, I had a young baby so everywhere I went involved a buggy, change bag and supplies well suited to a smallscale polar expedition. By 2017, testing the convertible, the need for a buggy had gone, and with a growing family, it was fairly well suited to our needs. Another four years on and the Evoque has evolved again. But is it for the better? The exterior looks sleeker, taking more styling tips from the Velar, with a noticeably different front grill, and the same vanishing door handles. I’m a fan of the grill, but the door handles aren’t my cup of tea. On a Tesla, flush handles work well, and seem to extend from the body when your hand The Local Answer

approaches, but with the Evoque, light pressure is needed on the discrete button, which kind of ruins the effect for me.

An A n iimpressive mpressive ttouch ouch sscreen creen d display isplay Moving inside, the Velar’s touches can again be felt – an impressive touch screen display controlling pretty much everything in the car. In principle this is fine, but there are two issues from my point of view. Firstly, it took some getting used to switching between the various apps, which isn’t necessarily a problem, but for the money, I’d like it to be simple, intuitive and straightforward. Secondly, the high gloss touch screen looked great in most conditions, apart from direct sunlight, where every fingerprint, every smudge and every touch was evident. Easily polished off, but again, a little disappointing. I think a different graphical background would sort it – the similar screen on a Tesla doesn’t suffer the same To advertise call 01242 510500

fate, but uses a predominantly white background. I should have mentioned earlier that this was a PHEV – plugin hybrid – but with a maximum electric range of around 30 miles. For me, this should have been a 2.0 diesel engine Range Rover, instead of the 1.5 litre petrol hybrid, but as a hybrid it was relatively effective, just not quite what you’d expect from the appearance. All in all, it is a great car – capable off road, hybrid capabilities and comfort for five adults… but frankly, while I like the interior and front end of this new model, I prefer the slightly more rugged rear end of the previous derivation. That said, I couldn’t mark it down purely for that, but I think the £40-50k market that this sits in is very congested, and my only concern is that this new Evoque isn’t completely convincing of its premium heritage. But I think I could be convinced with a little more time with it. Page 15

Going G oing loopy loopy n near ear E Ebrington brington It’s far too easy to miss sleepy Ebrington as you speed north up the A429 with Stratfordupon-Avon and that Warwickshire Bard on your mind. And that’s a shame, because pretty Ebrington has more to offer than its tucked-away North Cotswolds location might suggest. There’s a rather nice 30 0-yearold pub for a start or – as we’ll discover later – a finish. Ancient St. Eadburgha’s Church, with its notable canopied pulpit and medieval stained glass, is also worth a visit. And then there’s the always-enjoyable sevenmile Ebrington Loop walk that you begin by heading north east along Nash’s Lane.

S Spectacular pectacular v views iews n northwards orthwards It’s a pleasantly mild midweek October day. Summer ’s gone but winter ’s chilly vagaries are yet to unfold. The car is parked and the walk holds the possibility of rubbing shoulders with serious North American money at Foxcote Manor – as well as visiting one of Britain’s loveliest Arts and Crafftts gardens at Hidcote Manor. On the way, enjoy spectacular views towards the Midlands from the Cotswolds’ northern escarpment. The obligatory picnic is

But from experience, longer exploration of its intricately-designed outdoor rooms, maze of narrow pathways, secret gardens and a visitor-accessible tennis court is warranted. Esteemed expat American landscaper Major Lawrence Waterbury Johnston certainly knew what he was doing back at the start of the twentieth century. It’s gorgeous. Later, we navigate sleepy Hidcote Boyce, crossing meadows, climbing field stiles and negotiating a now-unused point-to-point course to reach Ebrington. There, after passing the village hall and turning right, we’re welcomed at centuries-old Ebrington Arms for mouth-watering refreshments. As walk commentators before me have already said: ‘Well done! Getting Getting ready ready for for autumn autumn October can still produce some days of balmy sun, along with misty mornings and gloomy skies – mind you, August seemed to provide us with a good amount of gloomy skies too! But even if the good weather appears, it is never going to last. The leaves will start to fall and cover the garden, and the late flowering herbaceous perennials like the Asters and Japanese anemones will start to go over.

R Rose ose h hips ips sstud tud tthe he sstems tems llike ike ffairy airy llights ights Some roses will still produce the odd flower into winter and others will leave fat hips to stud the stems like fairy lights – there is more to the winter garden than just flowers. It is at this time of year that anything with berries on comes into its own, feeding the birds and adding interest to the garden. Now is the best time to order bare-rooted roses from specialist suppliers, as you will have

the greatest choice of varieties. Roses planted when barerooted are cheaper than pot grown ones and also, if planted correctly, establish themselves quicker. Collect any leaves that are lying on the lawn, or smothering delicate plants, and make a leaf pile. Attach chicken wire to four corner posts with membrane on the bottom to stop the ivy taking over. The leaves can be run over with the lawnmower first to make them rot quicker or just left whole. On the other hand, you could just put them into old compost bags with plenty of holes poked in them. Stack them somewhere out of the way and leave them for a year or more and you will be rewarded with some lovely leafmould to use in your compost or as a mulch To advertise call 01242 510500

around your woodland plants like hellebores or ferns. Plant broad beans for an early crop next year. ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ is a very good variety to overwinter. Plant seeds 20cm apart and 5cm deep. If you have an asparagus bed you will notice that the ferny foliage is going yellow and dying. Cut it down to 2.5cm above the ground and compost the old leaves.

Sow S ow ccabbages abbages rready eady ffor or sspring pring The second week of October is traditionally the sowing time for crops to grow on over winter under unheated glass using a cold-frame, cloche or, if you are lucky, a polytunnel. Something like the pointed ‘Hispi’ cabbage, which has an award of garden merit, is a good one that will be ready to crop around about Easter. Don’t sow too many as they need picking straight away when ready and will go over if left. Page 25

What What makes makes a house house a home? home? Since the pandemic we have all become so much more focused on our living spaces and, as we head towards the winter, making them feel warm and inviting. During the year some of us, like my daughter and nephew, will have moved into their first proper house, while others may have downsized to a new property. So how do we create that special feeling of home in our living spaces? It’s all in the detail…

The The tthings hings y you ou llove ove Your home should reflect your personality. Have things around you that you love and make you feel good – photographs of family and friends, children’s drawings, or tasteful reminders of holidays. Display favourite artworks, or unusual items you have picked up, make cushions from favourite fabrics – these are the things that make your home special. Take your cue from your interests and hobbies. I found an antique looking music stand in a vintage store, which is useful and really adds character to my home office.

O Objects bjects tthat hat ttell ell a sstory tory A home should also tell your story – things that perhaps spark a special childhood memory. My friend has old family portraits in the sitting room of her contemporary home, which add extra depth and personality. Interiors doyenne Nina Campbell advises re-using favourite things. Re-cover a much-loved chair handed down from your Grannie; display something whimsical you’ve picked up in your local charity shop. The Local Answer

Image: IKEA

I recently came across an old tailor’s dummy, which would look stunning in a hallway.

Something S omething creative creative After decades of mass-produced items, the trend is now towards having hand-made objects. The Japanese call it Wabi-sabi or “the beauty of imperfection”. Interior designer Ilse Crawford, who has a collaboration with IKEA, believes that it’s the beautiful things we treasure that make a home unique. Hand-crafted pieces aren’t perfect, but they are alluring because each one is different. Search out objects at local craft-fairs – I came across a ceramicist/potter on a holiday in Ireland and I use one of her bowls everyday, as it reminds me of meeting her.

C Curate urate your your collections collections With a post-pandemic trend towards creating calmer living spaces, it’s a good time to To advertise call 01242 510500

curate your possessions. Everyone has their passions and some of us love our collections, but don’t let them take over – edit and display them in groups of similar colours and shapes. Refresh the look of your spaces from time to time by repositioning things; mix books with other items, give things away if they no longer make you happy. Someone else will love them and give them new life.

A touch touch o off nature nature For that extra special sensory touch, I always have seasonal flowers in the house. Flowers lift your spirits, and bring a lovely scent and an invigorating pop of colour to a room. In autumn/w winter you can include dried flowers, branches and berries. Why not bring some in from your garden? Now you are ready to invite your friends to your warm, welcoming and unique home. Page 27
