Revision Revision techniques techniques aand nd sstrategies trategies Learning is an ongoing process, but when exams are looming, revision of topics is required so that information is fresh in your mind. You may groan or cower at the mention of revision, and it may seem monotonous, but there are ways to make it more compelling. Do you know what kind of learner you are? There are three main learning styles: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.

V Visual isual learners learners Visual learners like reading, pictures, diagrams and colours. When revising, write out key points onto flash cards, make them colourful and draw pictures to help you remember important facts.

A Auditory uditory llearners earners If you are an auditory learner, you prefer hearing information rather than seeing it, so listening to talks on videos or podcasts may be your preference. To review your past

The Local Answer

learning, speak aloud so that your ears hear the information again; record key facts onto an electronic device so that you can play them back to yourself over and over. You might use different voices to make it more interesting.

K Kinaesthetic inaesthetic learners learners Kinaesthetic learners like to feel and be doing. To aid your memory, use your hands to make models; walk about as you read or speak and use your body to provide actions that emphasize essential ideas. In essence, the best way to learn is by using all three of these modalities – use colour and pictures, sounds and videos; use movement and get creative with making things. It may seem obvious, but the more extravagant you can make your revision aids, the more memorable the information will be. Other general advice for revision includes not leaving it

all until the last minute! Start weeks in advance and pace yourself – maybe create a schedule of what you need to revise and when. Setting a timer can be useful so that you revise in short bursts. Take breaks in between revision sessions, get away from your desk, and do something completely different to take your mind off it. This also gives your brain time to consolidate the information you have just been looking at. You could also think up some incentives to get yourself going, and after you’ve done some revision make sure you treat yourself with something you enjoy like messaging friends or playing a game, or something that’s good for you such as a walk in the park or a healthy snack. Exam time can be stressful for families as well as students themselves, so it helps when parents support their youngsters and encourage them to work hard and do well – without putting too much pressure on them. Give your children time alone to study, but also urge them to get on with it if they are being too lax! Page 

The The recovery recover y process process Following on from last month’s articles where we looked at some conceptual issues around recovery, this article is geared toward helping you with a reference point to manage a recovery routine to optimise your health and wellness.

C Cool ool d down own The recovery process begins as soon as you have completed a training session or physical activity, and starts with your cool down. This is a vital part of the recovery process, as it promotes the distribution of oxygenated blood around the body and helps to restore a ‘normal’ joint range of motion and length-tension in muscles. It is also an ideal time to review the session and get feedback from your body. What felt good, and what could be improved in your next session?

A Alcohol lcohol The next thing to manage for optimal recovery is your alcohol intake. If you enjoy a drink or two then you’re probably fine, but regular bouts of heavy drinking will play havoc with your recovery and overall health. Alcohol reduces protein synthesis in the body, along with levels of certain vitamins, while promoting dehydration. A worst-case scenario is heavy drinking after a game or training, with poor food intake and only a few hours’ sleep. Combining the dehydration and energy sapping effects of high intensity activity with a high volume of alcohol and lack of sleep has a massive negative influence on your recovery process. The 100-point Recovery Checklist is easy to build into a busy The Local Answer

Czech Czech Mate Mate Telling my wife that my next review was going to be a Skoda didn’t generate the same reaction as an Audi or a Volkswagen, despite effectively coming from the same stable as its reputable German engineered cousins. And that in itself speaks volumes. If we’re of a certain age, we all remember the longstanding jokes about Skoda’s reliability... what’s the best way to find spare parts for a Skoda? Follow one. What do you call a Skoda with twin exhausts? A wheelbarrow. But those jokes are almost thirty years old. And in that time, Skoda, like it’s erstwhile home, Czechoslovakia, evolved. The former joining the VW family in 1994, the latter splitting into Slovakia and the Czech Republic one year earlier in 1993. It’s astounding that a reputation for poor quality can persist almost three decades after it should have died a death. This Skoda Superb is quite frankly well-named; it really is superb. The body shape is sleek for a large family hatchback and

The Local Answer

sharing underpinnings with so many well-respected marques (more on that later) means it handles well too, with a great ride and minimal road noise. The interior is a genuinely nice place to be. The model I tested had sculpted comfortable heated seats with plenty of Alcantara leather and quality materials for the dash and steering wheel.

Ab big ig ttick ick tto o the the p practicality racticality ccolumn olumn A reasonable satnav and fantastic stereo, topped off by Skoda‘s version of the virtual cockpit first seen in Audis, complete an incredibly spacious cabin. The space is amazing. Rear legroom should accommodate three adults in comfort, regardless of height, and a truly massive boot gives another big tick to the practicality column. The only downside to the great two-litre engine and auto gearbox was the four-wheel drive system, which is frankly unnecessary in a family hatchback and impacted the fuel eco-

nomy considerably. I averaged 29mpg in a week of predominantly motorway commuting. A bit more on the underpinnings. It’s based on something VW call the MQB platform which allows them to base a wide range of cars on the same modular base. Hence this big hatchback shares a skeleton with everything from superminis to mid-size SUVs from the VW group. Not surprising they want to use this platform on so much given its $60 billion development cost... and therefore not surprising that the result is such a consummate performer, able to handle motorway miles, country roads and town driving without any discomfort. Other than the four-wheel drive system, my only issue was the colour of my test car, and although it grew on me and looked great when the sun shone, it was one of the ugliest colours I’ve ever seen on a press car. Easily overcome though, just don’t order yours in Dragon Green Metallic.

R Raising aising children children in in the the digital digital age age Like many parents, I daresay you read the headlines about the evils of modern technology. Maybe you are of the ‘no TV, no devices’ approach, preferring your children to read, make things and play outside. If that is the case, then all power to you, but for many, screen time is a mainstay of modern life and it looks like it’s here to stay. So what is the best way to support your children, allow them to navigate the virtual world without turning grey?

E Establish stablish b boundaries oundaries As always, the first port of call is establishing boundaries. Although most effective when introduced at an early age, it is never too late to change and reaffirm the boundaries you want to maintain. Rather than approaching the issue as a struggle to overcome, it is easier for everyone if screen time is incorporated into a wider plan of action. Linking screen time to certain times of the day and creating a sense of pride in the kids for

The Local Answer

following the rules is highly effective. Children who actively look forward to their ‘screen time’ and can self regulate – turning off when a programme has ended or when a certain game level is reached and receiving praise and affirmation for their choices – will grow up confident a n d w i t h a n i n n a t e ab i l i t y t o trust themselves. However, a lack of clear boundaries or understanding as to what is expected of them can leave our kids feeling lost and confused, leading to parental involvement being repeatedly negative, critical and frustrating. Life with our kids can be easy and fun if well-managed, so t h in k c a re fu l ly ab o ut ho w you want your relationship to feel and aim to keep that in mind when making changes. Teenagers use gaming to connect with peers and feel secure, so giving them the space to play whilst maintaining high expectations of respectful behaviour and healthy self care is a great way forward. Finding points of connection where you can listen to them and let them know you are available is key, so try to avoid only ever talking to your teen to tell them to clean their room or have a shower! A cup of tea and a heartfelt ‘I love you’ goes a long way with our older offspring, and it makes you feel good too!

C Children hildren n need eed a rrange ange o off llearning earning e experiences xperiences With little ones, there are many great children’s programmes and games that they will enjoy, and that will indeed aid their learning. As long as they are supported with physical play and a wide range of learning experiences in life, they will thrive. But remember, your phone is no replacement for your attention, so while it may keep your toddler quiet for a while, eye contact and conversation is so much more valuable. Sharing screen time and mummy/daddy time is a sure-fire way to keep your young ones on track as they grow up in the digital age. Page 1

B Blues lues b band and sset et ffor or homecoming homecoming show show Stroud band The Achievers have had a whirlwind 18 months. After releasing their debut album in 2018, the alt-blues group made up of Steve Ferbrache, Aron Attwood, Rufus Fry, Jack Thomas and Robert Holmes soon released their follow up album ‘The Lost Arc’, to critical acclaim. “It was quite hotly anticipated,” reflected guitarist and lead singer Steve, “after our first album did quite well. “It was a very different album and a bit quirky which I think is why people liked it. That was great because we worked really hard on it.” ‘The Lost Arc’ reached number one in the Independent Blues Broadcasters Chart and was also played on BBC Radio 2’s Blues Show. The album has also been

The Achievers

nominated for Album of the Year at the 2020 UK Blues Awards, where The Achievers are also up for Emerging Artist and Blues Band of the Year. Known for their ‘dancefloor gospel-blues’, it’s been something of a meteoric rise for the band who first got together in 2013. “It’s been a really good year for us,” continued Steve.

FFilm ilm Review Review – Joe Joe K Kennett ennett

“We’ve gone from playing local clubs and pubs in Stroud to representing the UK at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.” The Achievers were chosen by the UK Blues Federation to represent the country at the event which took place at the end of January. “It was an honour,” said Steve. “It’s such a competitive scene in the States, there were well over 200 bands from all over the world.” The Achievers will also represent the UK at this month’s European Blues Challenge in Zaandam in the Netherlands. That performance comes midway through a huge UK and Europe tour, which also sees them return to Stroud for a show at the Subscription Rooms on Friday 10th April. Full story online.

‘Onward’ follows brothers Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt) as they embark on an old world quest to retrieve an almighty gem capable of bringing their dad, who passed when they were too young to remember him, back to life to spend a final 24 hours with them. Pixar humanises figures of fantasy, bringing suburban life to a community of elves, where unicorns are akin to cats who screech at each other over scraps of food, and dragons are overexcitable dogs who bound around causing chaos, creating the perfect balance of relatable realism and wacky fantasy. Laugh-inducing and tearjerking from beginning to end, ‘Onward’ encapsulates what Disney Pixar does best. Bring tissues and get ready to fall in love with a new host of unlikely f riendships. T The he incredible incredible story stor y of of Ronny Ronny Rynd Rynd Merilyn Brason was born just six weeks after her parents arrived back in England, after being liberated from a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Now living in Eastcombe, near Stroud, Merilyn has written a book detailing her mother’s experiences in the camp. “My mother spent my childhood writing notes about what she’d been through,” she explained. “When she died my sister Catherine – who was born in the camp – began collecting her things together. “Sadly my sister died around five years ago, which is when I came across the notes, and I thought it was important to compile them and write the book my mother always intended to.” Merilyn’s mother, Ronny Rynd, grew up in Gloucestershire and attended Cheltenham Ladies’

College. In 1941, she and her husband Pat were in the Philippines – Pat was working in the capital Manila whilst Ronny, who was six months pregnant, visited the northern mountain town of Baguio.

Following the bombing of Pearl Harbour they were caught up in the Japanese attack on the Philippines, and interned in prisoner of war camps, alongside thousands of British, American and European citizens. Ronny was forced to raise Catherine in unimaginable conditions, living in degradation with starvation and disease rife. “My mother was an extraordinary woman, survival was the name of the game,” said Merilyn. After spending close to five years compiling research and Ronny’s notes, Merilyn is excited to share her mother’s story. ‘The Bamboo Bracelet’ is the first book she has ever written and will be published at the end of April, thanks in part to a Kickstarter campaign which raised over £2,500. Tom T om Elliott Elliott on on making making comedy comedy magical magical Tom Elliott is a unique comedian, in that if he manages to make his audience disappear, the night would probably go down as a success. That’s because Tom combines his comedy with magic, and although making people vanish is a slight exaggeration, it’s safe to say his shows contain plenty of wonder as well as laughs. “I blend the two elements in together, the comedy comes through with the magic and audience participation,” explained Tom, who lives in Stroud. “I’ve been doing this full-time for three years. I started when I was 14 years old – when I was at school a mate of mine did magic and we used to perform at kids’ birthday parties.” Tom no longer performs at parties but rather travels the

like holidays and marriage, and get the audience involved, make wedding rings disappear and things like that.” Tom is touring the show practically non-stop throughout the spring and summer months, in preparation for what is set to be one of the highlights of his year. He will be heading up to Scotland to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival thanks to a Kickstarter campaign. “I’m super excited, it’s the world’s largest arts festival. I’ve never been there, as a performer or a punter. “It’s my first time and I’m going to go headfirst and give it my best shot.” For more information on Tom and his tour visit tom-elliott.org Full story online.

ne lectric C Considering onsidering aan electric ccar ar – is is it it e nough? enough? I’ve been feeling incredibly guilty about my vehicle emissions for a while now. Every time I drive for the school run (often with this terrible weather lately) I watch the fumes from the cars around me swirling up into the ether and am consumed with angst about the fact that my car is doing the same. So I started researching electric cars.

Think Think ccarefully arefully a about bout which m which model odel you you go go for for One of the biggest issues for me is range. Unless you have a very big budget and can afford a car that does hundreds of miles and recharges in minutes while you drink a coffee in a service station, you need to think a bit carefully about which model you are going to go for. I’m terrible for planning and I also get a lot of anxiety about

The Local Answer

trips at the best of times and would be really worrying about the chargers not working at the service station, or (which I think would be more likely these days!) them all being in use! So that has led me to look at hybrids. A battery meaning I can do all my local running around emission free, and then if the worst happens and I can’t recharge for whatever reason on a longer journey (I feel I’d struggle on my trips back through Wales) I have the backup of an engine. But then I start to question myself again – is that good enough? And I think that sums up the way I feel generally about the environment at the moment. Is what I’m doing, or attempting to do, good enough?

We recycle and we try to find alternative routes to school, I’ve made a whole heap of changes to how we buy and live but ultimately, we are certainly leaving our mark on the planet as a family, despite our efforts. And with the local flooding and the terrible fires recently in Australia, it can feel as though we, as a world aren’t doing enough.

It’s It’s important important tto oa also lso look look for for the the positives positives But then maybe it would all be so much worse now without the things we have done. It’s important to also look for the positives. There are incredible initiatives reported every day – plastic bag equivalents made from plants that break down to nothing, amazing inventions to clean up the sea, people talking about the environment and doing their best to do better. I’m trying to take comfort from that, and continuing to educate my children on how they can live a more sustainable life. I hope by making small changes daily, and making bigger changes where I can, soon I will be able to feel much less guilty. Page 21

The The nodding nodding heads heads of of bluebells bluebells At last spring is really here and everything is bursting with life. British gardens typically look at their best in spring and early summer when everything seems to be gearing itself up for a spectacular display of colour. As daffodils finish flowering, the faded flowerheads can be removed. The small daffodils which are being grown to naturalise can be left to form seedheads. Don’t cut off the foliage – it needs at least six weeks’ dying to replenish the bulb underneath so it can flower the following year. Also, don’t tie up daffodils in strange bundles with elastic bands, as this can damage the leaves as well as being very odd-looking!

English English b bluebells luebells a are re under under threat threat from from tthe he Spanish Spanish v variety ariety A wood full of the beautiful nodding heads and scent of bluebells is a quintessentially English experience and they

The Local Answer

will be coming out this month. Unfortunately, they are under threat from the Spanish bluebell, which is grown in gardens as it was considered more decorative than its English cousin. How to tell them apart? Well the English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) has scented flowers borne on one side of the stem, the anthers are cream-coloured and unequal, and the flower spike is nodding. The Spanish bluebell (H.hispanica) has unscented flowers borne on all sides of the stem. It has blue equal anthers and an upright flower spike. So take care with what you plant (under no circ u m s t a n c e s h a rv e s t a n y from the wild!), sourcing them from reputable retailers, and you too could enjoy the fragrance of your own little bluebell patch. Keep a lookout for the red lily beetles on newly emerging lily shoots. Pick them off and squash them, and if you are not averse to the use of chemicals, use a systemic spray like Provado Ultimate Bug Killer to keep them safe for up to six weeks.

Feed F eed your your fruit fruit b bushes ushes With having such a wet winter it might be a good idea to feed your fruit bushes – the rain washes all the goodness from the soil. A balanced general fertiliser such as Gromore or blood, fish and bone can be applied at about 70g per square metre to give them a boost. Now is the time to make successional sowings of beetroot, chard and radishes outdoors ready for gathering in July and August. Follow the instructions on the packet, sowing in an area where the soil has been carefully raked to a fine tilth and don’t forget to label the rows! Page 2

W Wake ake up up to to spring spring It feels like spring has been a long time coming. If you’re like me, you start to crave more light and colour when the sun starts to stream in after the long, grey months of winter. The good news is, homeware shops are brimming with new fabrics, wallpaper and furniture. Celebrate the new season by following my tips to give your home a spring update.

P Pastel astel p perfect erfect An easy way to brighten up your home is to introduce pastel colours into a neutral scheme. Think petal inspired hues. Blush pink looks great matched with grey sofas for a midcentury living room scheme. I paired a soft, greyish-lilac with taupe in my bedroom – it feels so calm and restful. Fresh green walls with white tiles look clean and chic for a bathroom. For a warm welcome, paint your front door a sunny daffodil yellow and accessorise with grey metal planters.

Floral F loral cchic hic I am a bit of a fan of florals (my first home was all Laura

Ashley). The good news is that flowers feature strongly in the new spring fabric and wallpaper collections. Inspired by a trip to Japan earlier in the year, I am particularly drawn to the oriental style wallpapers. Little Greene’s lovely Belton design would look stunning in a hall or small bedroom, or for a real statement think about a wallpaper mural. Check out the gorgeous chinoiserie designs at www.surfaceview.co.uk or visit www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk for more inspiration. And remember you can always pick up a contemporary floral design on a single chair or a cushion.

Spring S pring blooms blooms Fresh flowers bring spring into your home and are a sure-fire way to lift your spirits. There are so many glorious spring flowers to choose from and you may find some growing in your garden that you can harvest. Mix daffodils with forsythia, masses of dark purple tulips, or white hyacinths always look stunning. Add some pussy willow branches for height,

then dry them and create a year -round sculptural arrangement.

Natural Natural selection selection The new spring furniture ranges feature lots of natural cane and rattan – perfect for a lighter spring/summer natural look for your décor. There are some great cost-effective pieces available online – check out the rattan fold up dining chairs at H&M, or the round black bamboo mirror at Trouva. Be sustainable by searching out old pieces and make them look this season by revamping them with a lick of paint in jade green, coral or on-trend classic blue.

Easter E aster tablescape tablescape For that seasonal finishing touch, dress up your lunch table for Easter. Create an Easterthemed table with pastel hued napkins and coloured glasses, then scatter around cute and charming eggs, chicks and bunnies. For a quick and stylish decoration, arrange white painted branches in a large vase and hang hand painted eggs on it – great fun to make with the kids. Happy Easter! The Local Answer

When you see him bat you think he’s a batting all-rounder and when he’s bowling you think he must be a bowling all-rounder. The figures don’t lie – the 25year-old has enjoyed huge success since joining Gloucestershire from Middlesex for the start of the 2018 season. He has made runs aplenty and has also been a regular wickettaker with his bustling, sharper than medium pace. And the great thing from Gloucestershire’s viewpoint is that he has been producing standout performances in all formats of the game – in the four-day county championship, in 50-overs cricket and in T20. And in a few months’ time

Gloucestershire team manager Andy Addis has issued an open invitation to all rugby players to get involved in their end-ofseason county championship campaign. For details, email Addis at andyaddis@live.co.uk or call 07742 655132.

It’s now 28 years since Chris Burns, one of Gloucestershire’s finest ever footballers, went toeto-toe with mighty Liverpool in the semi-final of the FA Cup. Ex-Forest Green Rovers player Burns, who played in central midfield, was playing for Portsmouth, who lost in a penalty shootout after a replay. “It’s the one we let get away,” said Burns, now 52. A Allll ssystems ystems go go for for L London ondon M Marathon arathon The London Marathon always provides great stories. It’s one of the iconic sporting events, allowing as it does elite runners to compete alongside club runners and social runners. But there’s more to it than that, of course, because as well as titles, personal bests and fancy dress, it produces so many tales of the unexpected where people have overcome unbelievably tough times just to take part in the 26.2mile event. Russell Simpson epitomises that can-do spirit where just about anything is possible if you really put your mind to it. You see, Russell has battled with – and beaten – a heart condition that was with him for some threeand-a-half years, a condition that saw him balloon up to more than 19 stone. Now, four-and-a-half years later, the 48-year-old Stroud Athletic Club runner will line up with 40,000-plus others for this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 26th April, weighing in at under 14 stone and looking to complete the course in around four-and-a-half hours. This will be only Russell’s second marathon – and his first in London – but such is his determination that everyone who knows him just knows he will come through his capital test with flying colours. Russell’s story is a truly uplifting one. “I was diagnosed with a heart condition eight years ago,” he told The Local Answer. “That got resolved about fourand-a-half years ago but I put on a lot of weight, I was completely unfit because I hadn’t been able to do anything. “So I started running on my own on Minchinhampton Common. I also did a Couch to 5K but I found that it wasn’t really progressing me.” It was then that Stroud-born

Russell Simpson, left, with Ryan Major

Russell, a former Marling School pupil who these days lives in Shortwood, made a decision that was to change his life. “Stroud Athletic Club were running a beginners’ course and that sounded absolutely perfect,” he said. That was just over three years ago and it’s fair to say he was spot on because Russell, who played prop for his school’s 1st XV back in the day, has been right up there in the front row when it comes to clocking up PBs over the past few years. “My first proper race was the Minchinhampton 10K,” he said, “I finished in about one hour, 11. “I ran a few more 10Ks in 2017 and by the end of the summer I ran under an hour for the first time, so I was certainly progressing.” He certainly was and he was also happy to step up in distance as well. “I ran 2.24 in the Stroud Half in 2017 and the following year I finished in 2.07,” he said.

Last year his time was slower – 2. 2 26 – because he helped someone around the course, but although clearly comfortable over 13.1 miles, he initially had no real ambition to run double the distance. “Doing a marathon was not something I thought I’d ever do,” he admitted. That all changed in April last year when he ran the Brighton Marathon. “I ran 4.54 which I was very pleased with,” he said. “I ran all the way. I stopped for a couple of drinks but I did everything I wanted to do.” The Brighton Marathon is a week before the London and Russell has entered this year’s race on the south coast as well. Not that he’s running that now that he’s got a place in London. “I’ll defer Brighton until next year,” he said with a laugh, “I’m not running two marathons in a week! “I’m going to London hoping to beat my Brighton time of last year, I’d be over the moon with four hours, 30.” Whatever happens at the end of April, one thing is for certain – Russell will carry on running. Although he played rugby and a bit of football when he was younger, he played little or no sport for 20 years before getting the running bug. And while he was well past 40 when he took up the sport, he’s certainly very pleased that it was a case of better late than never. “The health benefits are obvious,” he said. “But it’s not just the health side, it’s the social side as well. I’ve met so many good people at the club.” Russell is raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society when he runs in London. To support him, you can donate directly to his fundraising page www.justgiving.com//V VMLMBallot Place-RussellSimpson
