BIG EAST WOMEN'S SOCCER RECORD BOOK THROUGH 2014 SEASON THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE The BIG EAST Conference will forge ahead in 2015-16 for its third year in its current configuration. Founded by Dave Gavitt in 1979, the BIG EAST reorganized in 2013, entering a new era by returning to its basketball-focused heritage. The league’s 10 member schools today—Butler University, Creighton University, DePaul University, Georgetown University, Marquette University, Providence College, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University,Villanova University, and Xavier University— maintain an unyielding commitment to academic integrity, athletic excellence and community service. Gavitt, the former Providence College men’s basketball coach and athletic director, made the BIG EAST Conference a reality in May of 1979. Providence, St. John’s, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College formed the original seven-school alliance, and within the span of just a few years the conference had become a national powerhouse in men’s basketball. While the composition of the BIG EAST evolved over the next three decades, the focus of its schools did not waver, reflecting a tradition of broad-based programs led by administrators and coaches who emphasize academic strength and fair play. In December of 2012, the seven BIG EAST schools that do not compete in FBS football—DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova—announced their intention to separate from the conference’s footballplaying schools and form an independent association. On March 20, 2013, the seven schools reached an agreement that enabled them to retain the BIG EAST name and assume the old conference’s long-term agreement with Madison Square Garden to host the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Tournament, one of the premier events in college athletics. The schools also announced the addition of three distinguished institutions sharing the same academic and athletic values—Butler University, Creighton University and Xavier University—and forged a landmark, long-term broadcast partnership with FOX Sports. To complete the transformation, the BIG EAST moved its headquarters from its original location in Providence, R.I., to midtown Manhattan in New York City. The BIG EAST’s new era officially began on July 1, 2013, its effective date as the NCAA’s 32nd Division I conference. Val Ackerman, who previously served as founding President of the WNBA, President of USA Basketball and U.S. representative to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), was named fifth Commissioner of the BIG EAST in conjunction with the conference’s 2013 reconfiguration. Under her leadership, the BIG EAST has sought to maintain its reputation for excellence in intercollegiate athletics and has remained influential on the national landscape, with many conference and school administrators now serving on key NCAA committees. Since its inception in 1979, the BIG EAST has been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion, particularly television, and the conference’s current relationship with FOX Sports allows that tradition to continue. The BIG EAST has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with FOX Sports and its national cable network, FOX Sports 1, since the 2013-14 academic year, the first under the current multi-year agreement. FOX’s wall-to-wall coverage of BIG EAST men’s basketball includes complete coverage of all regular season games on FOX, FS1, FS2 and Fox Regional Networks, as well as the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden, college basketball’s longest-running postseason basketball conference tourney held at the same venue. The BIG EAST and FOX also have established an annual five-game New Year’s Marathon at the beginning of conference play. FOX Sports platforms also carry complete coverage of the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament and selected coverage of other Olympic sport championships. BIG EAST institutions are located in seven of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia,Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. The BIG EAST has also increased the visibility of its member school programs with the expansion of the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). When the conference launched BEDN in 2014-15, the league became the first collegiate conference to be hosted on the FOX Sports mobile platform, FOX Sports Go, the app that provides live streaming of FOX Sports content. BEDN will carry 225 live events in 2015-16, with an emphasis on women’s basketball and Olympic sport regular season and championship events.

BIG EAST Serves launched in 2014 as the conference’s platform to align the academic, health, leadership and service missions of the ten member institutions. Initiatives housed under the BIG EAST Serves umbrella reflect the conference’s commitment to developing the complete BIG EAST student-athlete and making a positive contribution to the campus communities of its member schools and to New York City, the conference’s headquarters. BIG EAST student-athletes boast high graduation rates, and the league has always been able to proudly say that many of its best students are also its best athletes. Alex Barlow, the starting guard for the Butler men’s basketball team that earned a 2014-15 NCAA bid, won the Senior CLASS Award in his sport for excellence in classroom, community, character and competition. He also won the BIG EAST men’s basketball scholar-athlete award for the second year in a row. Katrina Coogan of Georgetown, the 2015 conference women’s cross country champion, was a CoSIDA Academic All-American and seven-time cross country and track and field All-American. In 2014-15, BIG EAST teams earned a total of 31 NCAA bids. Two teams won national championships: Connecticut, an associate member in field hockey, won its second straight NCAA crown, and Denver, an associate member in men’s lacrosse, also captured an NCAA title, the first national champion not from the East Coast in that sport. Seven different national postseason championships saw multiple BIG EAST teams participate, including six teams in men’s basketball. BIG EAST schools produced 12 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, including five in soccer (three male, two female). Current BIG EAST men’s basketball programs have enjoyed extraordinary success over the years. Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova have won the national championship, and DePaul, Providence, St. John’s and Seton Hall have all made it to the Final Four. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985—Georgetown, St. John’s and Villanova—the only time this has occurred in NCAA history. Over the past 12 years, Butler, Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova have each reached the Final Four, with Butler making two trips. Xavier has also advanced to the Elite Eight twice and the Sweet 16 four other times. BIG EAST student-athletes have achieved recent success in other sports, as well. A BIG EAST team has won the NCAA women’s cross country championship four of the last six years (Villanova won twice; Providence and Georgetown once), with one runner-up finish (Providence). Creighton’s men’s soccer team has reached the NCAA College Cup in two of the past four seasons, with the Providence men advancing to the semifinals in 2014. In the 36 years since the original league opened its doors, BIG EAST teams have won 38 national championships in eight different sports. The conference crowned champions in 22 sports in the 2014-15 academic year, with 140 student-athletes winning individual national titles.

Providence’s Emily Sisson won a pair of individual NCAA titles in the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run in 2015

BIG EAST WOMEN'S SOCCER RECORD BOOK THROUGH 2014 SEASON 2015 BIG EAST WOMEN’S SOCCER The league’s head coaches were split over which team would win the 2015 women’s soccer crown as the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll unveiled on Thursday had reigning champion DePaul and St. John’s tied on top with 73 points and four firstplace votes apiece. The pair narrowly edged 2014 runner-up Georgetown, which came up just three points shy of the frontrunners and earned the remaining two first-place votes.

Sophia Maccagnone are back for the Bulldogs. Butler landed sixth in the preseason poll with 42 points. Maccagnone guided the Bulldogs through their second season of BIG EAST action with a team-high 12 points (4g, 4a) to finish tied for sixth (3-4-2) in the standings but missing out on the conference tournament due to a tiebreaker. Kashimoto helped facilitate an offense which ranked third in the BIG EAST in points per game (5.63) over 19 games (9-8-2).

The Red Storm led the way for preseason major awards, however, nearly earning a sweep. Reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Georgia Kearney-Perry and BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Diana Poulin repeated those recognitions in the 2015 preseason, while Providence’s Catherine Zimmerman shared Preseason Offensive Player of the Year plaudits with the Red Storm’s Rachel Daly, who earned the regular-season’s top offensive honor in 2013.

Villanova edged the Bulldogs in the postseason tiebreaker to qualify for its 17th BIG EAST Championship. The Wildcats finished 5-10-4 in 2014 and were tabbed seventh in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll with 31 points. Nova returns experienced goalkeeper Emma Meyer, who was the BIG EAST leader in save percentage (.865) while listing second in goals against average (0.74).

DePaul boasted the most Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selections with four. The Blue Demons are coming off their finest season in program history, claiming the 2014 BIG EAST regular-season and Tournament titles, along with their third NCAA Championship berth. BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Alexa Ben returns for DePaul and was a preseason all-league selection, along with 2014 All-BIG EAST picks Sarah Gorden, Abby Reed and Elise Wyatt. Ben and Reed ranked second and fifth, respectively, in the BIG EAST in points last year, with Ben’s six goals in league play ranking second to only All-American Daphne Corboz (Georgetown). The Blue Demons went 16-1-4 overall and 7-0-2 in BIG EAST play in 2014, stringing together a 20-game unbeaten streak which only ended in the NCAA Tournament. DePaul enters the season in the NSCAA Top 25 for the first time in school history, coming in at No. 21 in the national preseason poll. Poulin, Daly and Kearney-Perry accounted for St. John’s Preseason All-BIG EAST picks as well. Poulin had the second-best save percentage in the BIG EAST last season with an .846 clip, while the then-sophomore goalkeeper and Kearney-Perry helped lead the Red Storm to the Conference’s stingiest goals against average at just 0.65 per league contest to go along with a league-best five shutouts. The 2013 national scoring leader, Daly led the Red Storm in 2014 with 18 points, including eight goals, despite drawing considerably greater attention from the opposition’s defense. St. John’s went 6-2-1 in the BIG EAST last year for 19 points, tying its program record set in 2009, and narrowly missed a title game date with DePaul when it fell to Georgetown in penalty kicks in the BIG EAST Semifinals. The Hoyas finished the 2014 season with an 11-5-6 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year after receiving an at-large bid. Georgetown posted a 6-1-2 record in the BIG EAST, advanced to the BIG EAST Championship Final and closed out the season No. 24 in the NSCAA national poll. GU boasts a trio of Preseason All-BIG EAST Team picks, including 2014 first-team selection Marina Paul and second-teamers Rachel Corboz and Emma Newins. Corboz is the Hoyas’ top returning scorer from 2014, totaling 16 points off four goals and eight assists during her rookie campaign. Georgetown finished 20th nationally in total points (139) last year and 12th among all Division I teams with 47 assists. The Hoyas enter the season ranked No. 25 by the NSCAA. Marquette received votes in the NSCAA Preseason Poll and was tabbed fourth in the BIG EAST Coaches’ Poll with 60 points. The Golden Eagles return seven starters from last year’s squad, which was narrowly edged in PKs in the BIG EAST Semifinals by eventual champion DePaul. Marquette went 10-8-3 and 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play in 2014. MU had two players selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad – juniors Liz Bartels and Morgan Proffitt. Bartels and Proffitt played all 21 games last year, with Bartels finishing tied for third in the league with four assists in conference play.

First-year head coach Ross Paule has been charged to lead Creighton, which placed eighth (24 points) in the preseason poll. Paule inherits seven starters from a 2014 team which went 10-6-2 and 2-5-2 in league play, including seven-straight wins to open the year. Junior Lauren Sullivan was the Bluejays’ leading scorer in 2014 (7g, 1a) and earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Seton Hall and Xavier round out the poll in ninth and 10th, respectively. Junior Illissa Blackshear returns to the cage for the Pirates after boasting a 0.93 GAA and .825 save percentage to go along with five shutouts in 2014. The Musketeers welcome back their top-three scorers from 2014, including Tori Doss (3g, 1 a). All 10 BIG EAST teams open the 2015 campaign on Aug. 21. BIG EAST play commences Sept. 26-27, with the top six teams at regular-season’s end earning spots in the BIG EAST Championship. Creighton will serve as host of the BIG EAST Semifinals and Final, with First Round games being played at campus sites.
