BIG EAST WOMEN'S LACROSSE 2016 RECORD BOOK The BIG EAST Conference The BIG EAST Conference will forge ahead in 2015-16 for its third year in its current configuration. Founded by Dave Gavitt in 1979, the BIG EAST reorganized in 2013, entering a new era by returning to its basketball-focused heritage. The league’s 10 member schools today—Butler University, Creighton University, DePaul University, Georgetown University, Marquette University, Providence College, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University, Villanova University, and Xavier University—maintain an unyielding commitment to academic integrity, athletic excellence and community service. Gavitt, the former Providence College men’s basketball coach and athletic director, made the BIG EAST Conference a reality in May of 1979. Providence, St. John’s, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College formed the original seven-school alliance, and within the span of just a few years the conference had become a national powerhouse in men’s basketball. While the composition of the BIG EAST evolved over the next three decades, the focus of its schools did not waver, reflecting a tradition of broad-based programs led by administrators and coaches who emphasize academic strength and fair play. In December of 2012, the seven BIG EAST schools that do not compete in FBS football—DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova—announced their intention to separate from the conference’s football-playing schools and form an independent association. On March 20, 2013, the seven schools reached an agreement that enabled them to retain the BIG EAST name and assume the old conference’s long-term agreement with Madison Square Garden to host the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Tournament, one of the premier events in college athletics. The schools also announced the addition of three distinguished institutions sharing the same academic and athletic values—Butler University, Creighton University and Xavier University—and forged a landmark, long-term broadcast partnership with FOX Sports. To complete the transformation, the BIG EAST moved its headquarters from its original location in Providence, R.I., to midtown Manhattan in New York City. The BIG EAST’s new era officially began on July 1, 2013, its effective date as the NCAA’s 32nd Division I conference. Val Ackerman, who previously served as founding President of the WNBA, President of USA Basketball and U.S. representative to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), was named fifth Commissioner of the BIG EAST in conjunction with the conference’s 2013 reconfiguration. Under her leadership, the BIG EAST has sought to maintain its reputation for excellence in intercollegiate athletics and has remained influential on the national landscape, with many conference and school administrators now serving on key NCAA committees. Since its inception in 1979, the BIG EAST has been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion, particularly television, and the conference’s current relationship with FOX Sports allows that tradition to continue. The BIG EAST has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with FOX Sports and its national cable network, FOX Sports 1, since the 2013-14 academic year, the first under the current multi-year agreement. FOX’s wall-to-wall coverage of BIG EAST men’s basketball includes complete coverage of all regular season games on FOX, FS1, FS2 and Fox Regional Networks, as well as the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden, college basketball’s longest-running postseason basketball conference tourney held at the same venue. The BIG EAST and FOX also have established an annual five-game New Year’s Marathon at the beginning of conference play. FOX Sports platforms also carry complete coverage of the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament and selected coverage of other Olympic sport championships. BIG EAST institutions are located in seven of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Cincinnati.
The BIG EAST has also increased the visibility of its member school programs with the expansion of the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). When the conference launched BEDN in 2014-15, the league became the first collegiate conference to be hosted on the FOX Sports mobile platform, FOX Sports Go, the app that provides live streaming of FOX Sports content. BEDN will carry 225 live events in 2015-16, with an emphasis on women’s basketball and Olympic sport regular season and championship events. BIG EAST Serves launched in 2014 as the conference’s platform to align the academic, health, leadership and service missions of the ten member institutions. Initiatives housed under the BIG EAST Serves umbrella reflect the conference’s commitment to developing the complete BIG EAST studentathlete and making a positive contribution to the campus communities of its member schools and to New York City, the conference’s headquarters. BIG EAST student-athletes boast high graduation rates, and the league has always been able to proudly say that many of its best students are also its best athletes. Alex Barlow, the starting guard for the Butler men’s basketball team that earned a 2014-15 NCAA bid, won the Senior CLASS Award in his sport for excellence in classroom, community, character and competition. He also won the BIG EAST men’s basketball scholar-athlete award for the second year in a row. Katrina Coogan of Georgetown, the 2015 conference women’s cross country champion, was a CoSIDA Academic All-American and seventime cross country and track and field All-American. In 2014-15, BIG EAST teams earned a total of 31 NCAA bids. Two teams won national championships: Connecticut, an associate member in field hockey, won its second straight NCAA crown, and Denver, an associate member in men’s lacrosse, also captured an NCAA title, the first national champion not from the East Coast in that sport. Seven different national postseason championships saw multiple BIG EAST teams participate, including six teams in men’s basketball. BIG EAST schools produced 12 CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans, including five in soccer (three male, two female). Current BIG EAST men’s basketball programs have enjoyed extraordinary success over the years. Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova have won the national championship, and DePaul, Providence, St. John’s and Seton Hall have all made it to the Final Four. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985—Georgetown, St. John’s and Villanova—the only time this has occurred in NCAA history. Over the past 12 years, Butler, Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova have each reached the Final Four, with Butler making two trips. Xavier has also advanced to the Elite Eight twice and the Sweet 16 four other times. BIG EAST student-athletes have achieved recent success in other sports, as well. A BIG EAST team has won the NCAA women’s cross country championship four of the last six years (Villanova won twice; Providence and Georgetown once), with one runner-up finish (Providence). Creighton’s men’s soccer team has reached the NCAA College Cup in two of the past four seasons, with the Providence men advancing to the semifinals in 2014. In the 36 years since the original league opened its doors, BIG EAST teams have won 38 national championships in eight different sports. The conference crowned champions in 22 sports in the 2014-15 academic year, with 140 student-athletes winning individual national titles.

BIG EAST WOMEN'S LACROSSE 2016 RECORD BOOK 2016 BIG EAST Preseason Release Reigning BIG EAST women’s lacrosse champion Florida was picked to repeat in 2016 in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll which the league announced on Wednesday. The Gators, entering their second season in BIG EAST women’s lacrosse action, earned six firstplace votes to edge runner-up Connecticut in the poll. UConn’s Lauren Kwasnowski was tabbed BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while Villanova’s Jackie Froccaro was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Florida totaled 46 points to beat out the Huskies’ 44-point total. UConn collected the remaining two first-place votes, while 2016 BIG EAST Championship host Georgetown was tabbed third with 36 points. Entering its second season in the league, Vanderbilt placed fourth with 31 points, followed by Villanova in fifth (26), Temple in sixth (20), Marquette in seventh (13) and Cincinnati eighth (eight). Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team or players. The Gators went 15-6 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play in 2015, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship. Florida returns four of its top five scorers from that squad, including unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection Mollie Stevens, who scored 43 goals and notched nine assists last season to rank second on the team in points (52). Stevens was one of five preseason all-league selections for the Gators, with Stevens, Caroline Fitzgerald and Devon Schneider uncontested picks. Taylor Bresnahan and Sammi Burgess were also Preseason All-BIG EAST honorees. Florida averaged over 17 goals per game during their first season as an associate member of the BIG EAST, limiting opponents to just over five goals per game. Florida graduated Tewaaraton Award Finalist Shannon Gilroy, who not only led the BIG EAST in points and goals, but finished in the top five nationally in both categories. Gilroy was unanimously selected BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year in 2015, while Fitzgerald, Schneider and Stevens were also All-BIG EAST First Team picks. Kwasnowski earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2015 after anchoring the UConn defense which finished the year ranked fourth in the nation in caused turnovers (10.22), with Kwasnowski ranking 10th among all Division I players at 1.94 per game. The senior earned All-America Second Team plaudits and was invited to the U.S. National Team tryouts at season’s end. The Huskies advanced to the BIG EAST Championship title game for the first time last season, finishing the year with an 11-7 overall record and 5-2 in league play. Connecticut was the only team to hand the Gators a loss in league play last season, while its two conference losses were by one goal apiece. The Huskies listed second to Florida in goals per game and goals against average and welcome back a strong core from that squad, including Kwasnowski, and fellow unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selections Katherine Finkelston and Shannon Nee. Grace Nolan also claimed preseason honors. Finkelston ranked third in the league with 2.22 goals per game while Nee’s .471 save percentage ranked second. Backed by unanimous preseason all-league selection Kristen Bandos and fellow honoree Corinne Etchison, Georgetown was picked to finish third in the BIG EAST. In total, the Hoyas return eight starters and 21 letterwinners from the 2015 team which went 7-10 overall and shared the BIG EAST regular-season title with Florida following a 6-1 finish to league play. Georgetown missed out on the national postseason last year after backto-back appearances at the NCAAs, and will aim to earn its 15th NCAA bid overall in 2016. Bandos and Etchison ranked third and fourth on the team in points last season, with Bandos leading all Hoyas with 29 goals scored. Vanderbilt went 4-3 during its first season of BIG EAST play in 2015, totaling a 7-9 record overall, most notably dealing UConn a double-overtime setback. Three Commodores were voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, including the league’s No. 3 points-earner last season, Mallory Schonk. Schonk averaged 3.25 points per game, scoring 32 goals and registering 20 assists over 16 games played. Vandy returns its top seven scorers from 2015, with assists leader Jill Doherty (23) and key midfielder Alexa Kunowsky joining Schonk on the preseason all-league squad. BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Jackie Froccaro led Villanova to its first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship in 2015 after the Wildcats finished in a tie for fourth place with Vanderbilt at 4-3. Froccaro’s goals and points averages ranked second to only Gilroy last season, with the Villanova attacker averaging 2.88 goals and 3.35 points per contest. Her 4.47 draw controls per game was tops among all BIG EAST players and ranked 16th nationally. Along with Froccaro, the Wildcats return 11 starters
from last season’s team which went 9-8 overall, its first winning season since joining the BIG EAST. Defensive specialist Sam Scarfogliero joined Froccaro on the preseason all-league team, finishing 2015 with team highs of 28 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls (fifth in the BIG EAST). Nicole Tiernan represented Temple, which was slated sixth in the poll, on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Tiernan’s 2.19 goals per game average ranked fourth in the conference last year, leading the Owls to a 10-6 overall record while going 2-5 in league games. Temple opened the year winning seven of its first eight before cooling off, but remained among the highest scoring teams in the league at 10.06 goals per game. The Owls’ topsix scorers from 2015 return this season, as well as season goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik. Marquette (seventh) and Cincinnati (eighth) rounded out the coaches’ poll. MU’s Elizabeth Goslee, a mainstay on the Golden Eagle defense, was voted to the Preseason AllBIG EAST Team. Goslee totaled 30 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers last season, ranking fourth in the conference with a 1.76 CT average. She is one of 10 starters back for Marquette this season. MU went 5-12 overall and 1-6 in league play, while Cincinnati posted a 2-15 mark and 0-7 in BIG EAST games. Courtney Curtis leads the returning class for the Bearcats after scoring 37 goals in 2015 to rank fifth in the BIG EAST.
