The sense of substance and significance of materials becomes more lighthearted through handicraft.

The 21st century, Japan and Taiwan Contemporary Craft Arts Exhibition The skills of professionals, the lightness of fingertips, and the feeling of delicacy; the expression of Japanese contemporary art is often limited to sub-cultural elements. In reality, there are many rising artists who have a new Japanese spirit that cannot be categorized in this category. Although materials are still their basis, but they have positions and contact with the material differing from the “Mono-ha” art movement started in the 1960s, the final artwork is completed only after the fine handiwork of the artist. Instead of creating something, "Mono-ha" artists tend to re-build “materials,” and also pay attention to the environment that surrounds the “materials.” They recreate new relationships based on the interdependent relationship between the two elements and challenging the established concept of collapsing material. This type of basic processing method toward “materials” seems similar to the artists participating in the exhibition, but because the “Mono-ha” era is already unlike the modern era, the modern artists have different feelings toward “materials,” and the expression methods of the artwork are also extremely different. So what kind of era are we in now? The artists participating in this exhibition were all born in the 1970s, where they experienced the eras of mass production and mass consumption, and grew up surrounded by numerous consumer products and information. They lived in an era of ambiguity, where the importance of materials as well as what to believe is a constant issue they faced. Although the production process of their artwork is similar to “Mono-ha,” but they hold different feelings toward “materials” and the artwork they create appears similar to Contemporary Airy Crafts. In addition, handcrafting allows the sense of substance and significance of materials to become more lighthearted, and can be said to be a unique Japanese

characteristic. In China, the more handcrafting involved, the more ornamental the material appears, and the sense of substance and significance becomes more burdensome. This type of artwork which allows the viewer to sense a delicate handcraft touch also cannot be found in Korea which values surface appearances. This type of new Japanese artist that meticulously completes light craftwork by hand may be called the “Mono-ha” artists of the 21st Century. Iida Ryuta sculpts as a creative means, carefully cutting up books. Kaneuji Teppei takes advantage of the heterogeneity of materials and combines them to form rhythmic works. The creativity of SHIMURABROS. extends over various domains. In "The Wonders of Handcraft PART1," the works created from different materials such as paper, plastic, paint, photography, and videos by these three Japanese artists exhibiting the playful exchanges between "media" and "field" are scattered around the exhibition space. In the "The Wonders of Handcraft PART2," Izumi Keiji creates unbelievable wood sculptures of imaginary people; Iwasaki Takahiro takes towels and the threads from book bindings to create a new world; and Taiwanese artists Mia Wen-Hsuan Liu who cleverly uses paper materials as well as Llunc Lin who can create through the perfect combination of scientific materials such as acrylic, gather their works to form this exhibition. Different “materials” such as wood, thread, paper, and scientific materials fill this open space. These different and complex body of artworks that extend over “materials,” “media,” and “fields” exhibit a new Japanese mentality. Along with the two new age Taiwanese artists, the collaboration between the two parties this time in this exhibition this time will open a new horizon for the East Asian art world.

{ 關於金氏徹平的創作 }

{ About works by Kaneuji Teppei }

Article quoted from “Path to an Empty Forest” by Eriko Kimura, the assistant curator of Yokohama Museum of Art

Kaneuji presents varied materials in new and unusual ways but they do not entirely lose their original form, function, public image, or fundamental role. These images rush at the sense, and visitors who wander into his labyrinth may be as bewildered as Alice when she stumbled into the mad world of wonderland, overcome by feelings of anxiety and a kind of nostalgia. In Sea and Pus, he cuts out wave-form images from printed matter (advertisements for facial cream, etc.) and attaches them to other photographs or objects, forming images of floating liquid. These images give liquid a solid presence while relating its qualities as liquid. What is he trying to express through his creative activities? When we approach Kaneuji’s work and project our emotions into it, we have the sense that we are peering into a very private and personal area of his life and experience. There is Teenage Fan Club, for example, in which the hair is removed from plastic figures and reassembled to create hairy monsters. Kaneuji says he got the idea for this piece from his experience of seeing the back of people’s heads swaying to the music of a live band in a club. The writhing crowd reminded him of a monster. His images are based on visions of this kind of occurring in actual experience. Kaneuji says that these visions are reconstruction of landscape imprinted on his mind. Imagination can only work from accumulated memories, however, so there is nothing out of ordinary in an artist using this approach. As in working with physical materials, Kaneuji combines numerous fragments of memory as the materials of collage and makes his art through a process of choosing or discarding them. Kaneuji’s art involves more than actual physical forms. It is created through combinations of fictional and real images, partly made up of insubstantial memories.

{ 關於志村姊弟的創作 }

{ About works by SHIMURABROS. }

'EICON' : A Greek word that refers to a life-size image. 'Eicon' incorporates an acting style found in early film called slapstick, it employs the use of a special high speed camera in order to reinvigorate the physicality of working motion. There is a tendency in the directing of recent film for personal philosophical expression to have ascendancy over the essence of body movement. Eicon examines the methodology of classical acting exploring new aspects of the body and the garment recording images at 0.012 second intervals thus elevating slapstick in the hierarchy of modern film making. This instillation was born of a collaboration with Tomaki Okaniwa designer of The Viridi-anne and it was shown in conjunction with his Spring/Summer Paris '08 collection.

{ About works by Iida Ryuta }

Iida Ryuta was born in 1981 in Shizuoka. As a sculpture student at Nihon University College of Art, he won the grand prize in the 22nd Exhibition of Graphic Art Hitotsubo-ten, and a Kitano Foundation scholarship. His career has grown from strength to strength, with works shown at various venues and exhibitions, such as graf media gm, Fact of Accumulation 07, Osaka 2007, Bunkamura Gallery Arts & Crafts and Gallery +, Tokyo 2006 and more. He teamed up with Yoshihisa Tanaka, a graphic designer at Coil, to form the unit[ Nerhol ], which exhibited at Tokyo's Calm and Punk Gallery. Iida is always searching for new points of inspiring intersection between his own practice and that of artists and domains which he actively relates to. “A thing having a sense of material and a sense of information, A thing for which the act relates a direct desire, A thing which is common and anybody has, It is a book which I choose as material." Iida uses paper and books, common everyday objects as material for his sculpture. Iida's approach to his chosen medium liberates the letters and text from the programmatic nature of the book, whose typical function and being revolves around its thickness and readability. In this way, he fundamentally changes our stereotypical conceptions of what books and letters are.
