ANNUAL REPORT SUMMARY

2021-2022

Dear Friends,

“Look at the stars. See their beauty. And in that beauty, see yourself.” – Draya Mooney

We are pleased to present our 2021-2022 Annual Report and show you how the P.G. Chambers School stars are shining brightly!

Each of you is a star for enabling our students to shine! We are honored to celebrate and showcase your generosity on the pages that follow. You have improved our students’ lives and access to education in so many ways. You have funded communication devices and more effective sound amplification systems for our students with hearing loss, and enhanced instructional, interactive display boards which are so important for students with vision impairment. You have given generously to our badly needed playground renovation project – a dream that will become a reality in the coming year.

Our students are our P.G. Chambers School stars, fully embracing their friendships and in-person experiences as they learn and grow. A special buzz of anticipation pulsed through the school as our students prepared for a very special visitor – one of the first since March 2020. Civilian astronaut and pediatric cancer survivor Hayley Arceneaux spent an afternoon talking and singing with our kids and admiring their space-themed art projects. The classes had spent weeks learning about space travel and decorating the school in anticipation of Hayley’s visit.

Later that evening, Hayley joined us at our Menus for the Mind event as we reconnected in-person with our generous community after two years of virtual events. Hayley inspired us with her keynote remarks as she shared her determined and joyful journey. We were captivated by our parent speaker Rue Faal, the legacy of trustee and volunteer Bobbi Phillips, and of course our students. The night was a financial success as well, thanks to the generosity of our stars in attendance. Not to be outshined, our Golf Classic and 5K attendees followed suit, enjoying the events and contributing funds essential to meeting our mission.

Funds raised by our generous community support our life altering work: our early intervention program which serves children in the critical years from birth to three; our on-site preschool through 8th grade regional day school; and our service to the broader community providing evaluations, consultations, and therapy services to school-aged students in surrounding school districts.

We hope you share our pride as you enjoy the wonderful stories of our community’s generosity and the children’s incredible accomplishments. It is especially an honor to highlight our long-time partnerships with the F.M. Kirby Foundation and the Auxiliary, philanthropic stars who have helped give the gift of communication, mobility, and learning to so many children. Their leadership is inspirational and their impact far-reaching.

Our special mission could not be achieved without you. We are most grateful to each of you for your passion for our work and your love of our kids. With you at our side, we will continue to help every student shine!

Many thanks to you all,

YOUR PARTNERSHIP INSPIRES US 2

Entering the offices of the F.M. Kirby Foundation, there is an obvious respect for history. The Foundation is housed in the historic Sansay House on DeHart Street in Morristown and each room is comfortably furnished with period pieces. In one corner of the foyer sits an original F.W. Woolworth Company safe, a nod to the family’s history and a tribute to Fred Morgan Kirby who co-founded Woolworth’s five and dime business and created the family foundation in 1931.

In its more than 90 years, the Foundation has grown and matured while staying true to its original purpose and programmatic priorities. The Foundation’s goal is to invest in opportunities that foster self-reliance or otherwise create strong, healthy communities… while recognizing that achieving philanthropic priorities takes time, effort, and perseverance that often result in sustained funding relationships.

Executive Director, Justin Kiczek, speaks to the strong tie between the Foundation’s value of fostering self-reliance and the mission of P.G. Chambers School. “The School’s work gives us a special way to think about this value. The children are developing life skills of self-care and reading. These are lifelong gifts to the children and their families.”

The Foundation made its first gift to P.G. Chambers School more than 30 years ago. Fred Morgan Kirby’s grandson was running the organization and his great grandson, Dillard and his wife Adrienne were introduced to the School by good friends Finn and Kim Wentworth. Adrienne was so taken by the School and its students, she wrote an endorsement letter to her father-in-law. Over the years, the Foundation has invested generously in the School’s general operating needs, facilities, and most recently, its early intervention program.

Dillard joined the Foundation in 1996, Under his leadership, the Foundation has stayed true to its commitment to fund general operating needs (“it’s in our DNA”), even amidst challenges like the Great Recession of 2008. “We have a history of funding winners and sticking with them long term.”

In recognition of the Foundation’s long term, impactful giving, the School wishes to express its heartfelt appreciation for the Foundation’s leadership and commitment to our kids’ success. This is a deep, respectful partnership that has allowed our students to develop life skills and to thrive. We are profoundly grateful for the Foundation’s generosity.

Inspired by their friends, Finn and Kim Wentworth, Adrienne and Dillard Kirby made their first gift to the School nearly 30 years ago. Upon meeting the children and their families, Adrienne was moved to join the Friends group and went on to serve eight years as a trustee. She recalls the pleasure of working with other trustees and leaders such as Gloria Dodd, Patti Chambers, Bobbi Phillips, Linda Kaugher and Cathy Walsh. Projects included the Menus for the Mind fundraisers and the Peck School partnership where Peck students worked alongside the P.G. Chambers School students.

Adrienne and Dillard continue to give to the School citing their love of the children and the organization’s adaptability over the years. They salute the staff members for their caring, creative approach and their confidence in the children’s abilities to learn and succeed. They encourage others to take a tour so they can feel the energy firsthand.

“Seeing the P.G. Chambers School teachers and children working together, it is humanity at its best! I felt like I was seeing love in action.”

P.G. Chambers School is fortunate to have devoted partners who support our important work.

We are deeply grateful to the foundations and community partners whose support makes it possible for all students to access classroom lessons and specialized therapies.

Many thanks to:

• Catholic Human Services Foundation and the Arnold A. Schwartz Foundation – funding sound amplification systems aiding students with hearing impairments.

• Union Foundation – underwriting a large screen, interactive promethean board.

• ADP Foundation – continued funding for our Powered Mobility Program to foster independent movement critical to student growth and development.

• The F.M. Kirby Foundation and the C. Northrop Pond and Alethea Marder Pond Foundation – generously supporting early intervention services for our community’s youngest children.

• Summit Foundation and E.J. Grassmann Trust and many individual contributors – supporting the Playground Renovation Project.

• The Graphix Spot - designing and installing a beautiful mural in our Elm lobby.

• Coughlin Midlige & Garland LLP and Lowenstein Sandler LLPproviding pro bono legal services.

• The Chambers Family – gifting tickets to fun, family events.

• Natrel Communications – donating office furniture and equipment.

• Dorothy B. Hersh Foundation – making a transformative $100,000 gift to support the Playground Renovation Project.

• Knights of Columbus – George Washington Council – delivering donated furniture and upgrading school gardens.

And so many others!

You as our partners make excellence possible for our children and we are deeply grateful for your belief in our mission and support of our students, families, and staff.

As an alumna of P.G. Chambers School’s Early Intervention Program, I know how the services can help you grow up to be a contributing member to something you love. My grandmother used to come to my therapy sessions starting when I was a baby and saw firsthand the difference it made in my life. She was extremely proud of me when I graduated from college and began working at P.G. Chambers School. She often said it was because of the help I received from P.G. Chambers therapists, and I could not agree more.”

THE P.G. CHAMBERS SCHOOL AUXILIARY

Heartfelt Gratitude to the P.G. Chambers School Auxiliary

P.G. Chambers School’s Auxiliary was founded by Ruth Watts in 1953. Ruth was called into service by her son, Claude, newly appointed President of the Morris County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc. It did not take them long to realize that they would need more volunteers to help, so Ruth called on her friends and the Auxiliary was born. Ruth resigned in 1993 at the age of 94. Her legacy inspired many future leaders who continued what she had begun so many years ago.

Over the years, the Auxiliary grew to 80 members strong, raising more than $280,000 to help our kids. The Auxiliary hosted theatre trips, luncheons, pie sales, notecard sales, non-event fund raisers and the popular City Lights tour to provide its members with social connections while engaging the community in support of our mission. The Gourmet Café in Parsippany was happy to support the efforts through its “Make a Difference Mondays” program. Funds raised have supported a scholarship fund, equipment, furnishings, programs, and most recently, our pet therapy program and playground renovation project.

We are sincerely grateful for the steadfast leadership of Helen Schuyler, Mitzi Szerlip, Fran Schwartz and Nancy Perkalis who have marshalled on despite a dwindling membership. The pandemic only made matters worse, forcing them to cancel their popular theatre trips, pie sales and annual luncheon. In June of this year, the Auxiliary leadership decided it was time to wind down the Auxiliary but continue to support P.G. Chambers School as individual contributors. “We are hopeful our membership will understand this difficult decision and will join with us in

supporting the Playground Renovation Project this year and the students of P.G. Chambers School in the years to come,” said Helen Schuyler, President of the Auxiliary.

“P.G. Chambers School will always have a special place in our hearts and we are just honored to have been a part of it for so many years.”

Fran Schwartz, Auxiliary Secretary for 33 years and a dedicated member for 41, shared that she has met so many wonderful, dedicated, caring women who always had their purses open to help our kids. How can I help? was their mantra. “I have also witnessed many changes to the school. I will always hold dear the many friendships I have made and will treasure the wonderful and inspiring memories of our kids and the dedicated women who made it their mission to support them.”

Former P.G. Chambers School Executive Director, Susan Seamans shared, “the Auxiliary were like a sorority. They cared for each other and volunteered with a purpose. Their energy, commitment and care for our students and staff inspired us all and I am truly honored to have known and worked with them for over 25 years.”

The impact of the Auxiliary’s commitment is far reaching and will live on in perpetuity. P.G. Chambers School and the Auxiliary have already been the recipient of legacy gifts from two long-time Auxiliary members, Ruth Kalish and Barbara Jacobus. In the spirit of Dr. Seuss’ famous quote, “Don’t cry because it is ending, smile because it happened,” we celebrate the Auxiliary’s remarkable legacy of love for our children with joy and gratitude. Their partnership will be remembered by all and their legacy will live on through those they have inspired by their commitment and service.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM INSPIRES CREATIVITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Since 2017, the Student Leadership Group has provided a unique opportunity for exploration, growth, and skills development for middle school students who share their strengths and talents along with their voices and opinions.

Co-led by senior speech language pathologist Jennifer Jacobs and classroom teacher, Dina Alves the students meet weekly to collaborate on projects while working with their peers and staff. The students choose jobs for the month, such as book keeper, facilitators, timekeepers, note-takers, etc., and all of the activities connect to the curriculum. Projects strengthen the students’ reading, writing and communication skills as they send e-mails needed to organize and execute a project. They learn to handle finances as they raise money for a specific project. Organizing the money and projects helps them work on executive functioning skills.

I am immensely proud of how the students interact with each other and with the staff. It makes me smile when I hear students tell other students something they have learned and/or attempt to help others without adult assistance.”

Before a project moves forward, the group presents the idea to the school administrators for review and approval. The planning and execution of these projects provide students with valuable experience working together as part of a community and advocating for both themselves and the good of the group.

What did you learn as a member of the Leadership Group?

Giovanni: I learned how to focus in a meeting and a job.

Mark: I learned how to make money.

Samir: I learned how to participate in tie dye, make swirls on a shirt, plan the agenda, and choose a movement break.

Tinaya: I learned that it is important to work together to make decisions and solve problems.

Harold Sholk Makes Transformational Legacy Gift

A month after Harold Sholk’s passing on April 13, 2019, we were notified that Mr. Sholk had included the School in his estate plans. We were elated by the bequest but deeply saddened we were not able to thank this wonderful man for his generosity during his lifetime.

Mr. Sholk resided in Florham Park and was 89 years old. He was born in Newark, N.J. An engineering graduate of Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. Thereafter, he worked for the Army as a civilian engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County before retiring in 1986. He was the author of three books with military and Western themes. His generosity extended to many including donating engineering equipment to the Boy Scouts and always being the first to buy Girl Scout cookies from the neighborhood children. Mr. Sholk’s transformative $400,000 gift will change lives for children at P.G. Chambers School and we will be forever grateful for his incredible generosity.

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but the “SEED” you plant.”— Robert Louis Stevenson

We want to express our appreciation for your planned gift to P.G. Chambers School. But we may not know about it.

We would love to hear from you! Tell us your story. Let us help you create a legacy gift to improve the lives of children with disabilities.
