Domino’s Maybe tonight’s the big game. Maybe you’re big on family and short on time. Maybe you’ve just got big munchies. The reasons come to mind quickly - about as fast as Domino’s Pizza can deliver dinner. “The thing that separates us from the competition is we have three locations to better serve our customers. When you want us, we’re close,” said owner Tony Wilson. College Heights, the Hart, the bowl, all of them are plugged right into your home. Sure, you can still order by phone, but you can also click your desires right off the Domino’s menu. “All of our current specials are online. Don’t have a flyer? Don’t have the latest coupon? No problem. It’s all there,” said Tony. “You send us a message, and the order pops up on screen. We know exactly what you want - pizza, pasta, drinks, chocolate lava cake - you tell us. We bring it over.”

The Canadian Brewhouse & Grill The Canadian Brewhouse is a one-of-a-kind Canadian themed restaurant and sports bar with an extensive menu of appetizers, entrees, drinks and great specials every night of the week. The modern Canadian theme is clearly present with most decorations and menu items being inspired by “Canadiana” with the clear intent to make guests smile. If you’re looking for the best place in town to sit down with friends, watch a game and have a great time, The Canadian Brewhouse is that place! The CBH also hosts exciting events year round for community leagues, important fundraisers, and some just for fun! The main point is to stay connected with the community and help raise funds for great causes. Innovation is the name of the game at the CBH; with Kallpods that make it easy to alert your server to your needs; tabletop speakers so you can enjoy any game no matter what; the signature jumbotron that helps you feel like part of the action; and the only rooftop patio in Prince George. The Canadian Brewhouse is the place people want to be!

The Twisted Cork The Twisted Cork is still turning with the times. Troy McKenzie and executive chef Chris Angus opened a 200-seat banquet loft last year, with its own bar and dance floor. It’s the latest evolution for one of the longest lasting downtown restaurants. “We still feel young,” said McKenzie. “Prince George developed a downtown restaurant culture. Now we have company. We have never felt stronger.” The Twisted Cork menu has muscle. Steak, ribs, salmon, lamb and chicken are staples, but their unprecedented protein range also offers elk, rabbit, bison, walleye and other unique dishes sourced from sustainable specialists. “The cooking process is so different for each dish. I can’t say enough about the talent in our kitchen,” McKenzie said. “Then you look at our amazing salads, our desserts, and the great drink pairings.” Twisted Cork also has a 85 seat banquet hall, a 12-seat private room, and famous stone, brick and wood interiors.

Westwood Public House The Westwood is your neighbourhood pub, no matter where you live in the city. The community’s big events all happen at The Westwood: the playoff game, the fundraiser for local causes, bands and comedians. This is a quaint and lively public house. “We love to be busy,” said owner and good neighbour Nate Coole. “We’ve got live entertainment, deejays, trivia nights, sports, it’s never a dull moment.” Coole is proud of the Westwood kitchen. Their ingredients are as fresh and local as possible. That also goes for the new, upscaled drink menu. “We are always challenging ourselves to innovate the menu,” said Coole. “We have staple pub food, but with a Westwood take on it, like making our own burger patties from scratch, ordering our hotdogs all the way from New York, just so it’s something you can only get here.” They are the rec room of the Westwood neighbourhood, and the whole city’s invited.

The sleek interiors were as delicious to the eye as the menu was to the taste - contemporary entrées and desserts, unique appetizers, and a prime dining experience. Each season the menu gets a workout from executive chef Brandon Thordarson. Moxie’s pours their own craft beer label (Big Life) and house-squeezed hard lemonade. The draught taps have 10 beers in all. Their wine cellar is stocked. Happy Hour is enhanced at Moxie’s, running twice daily from 3-6pm and 9-close, with expanded Happy Hour menu with even more food and drink specials. We also have discount wings on Monday and half-price wine bottles on Wednesdays. Live bands sometimes appear. Moxie’s is a hotspot for steaks, salads and pasta, paired with specialities like lemon basil salmon, sushi cones, portobello veggie burgers and lettuce wraps. You can’t always jet to Mexico, but those tastes and sensations are available in one of the most popular locations in the city - SmartCentres. “This is the best spot in town,” said owner Kathy Bailey, who loves meeting the out of town shoppers as well as the Prince George regulars who come in seeking the sun. “We have that Southern Cali food style, that mission-style burrito is a big part of who we are, the tacos, the enchiladas, the quesadillas, we have a lot of seafood as well - it’s all about the flavour, that bold, bright Baja feeling.” There’s a daily rotation of specials, they’re licensed, there are vegan and vegetarian options, gluten free items, and always a family-friendly atmosphere. The Black Clover The Black Clover feels so familiar even though they’ve only been a downtown pub a few years. Maybe it’s their Celtic charm? The friendly ghost of the Cariboo Steakhouse that once lived there? The echo of the dearly passed Sgt. O’Flaherty’s Pub? Owner Troy McKenzie wouldn’t bet a plate of fish ‘n’ chips or a bowl of Irish stew against any of that. He savours those memories himself. It’s all made The Black Clover into a go-to public house. “We’re adjusting the menu nonstop,” said McKenzie. The Black Clover has spaciousness and deliciousness, and also quality entertainment. Thursdays salute great value with friendly prices on burgers and beer, and introduce the week’s new music talent, as carefully selected as the menu. “People set their week by it,” said McKenzie. “The quality is so high, it’s memorable. It’s something you can’t get anywhere else.”

Their specialties are favourites like spicy prawns, honey-garlic pork, deep-fried wings, and the delicacy Peking Duck. “We feel like a family restaurant,” said co-owner Leah Chu (business partner Jing Peng). “We know our guests names, they have been coming for years.” While large group catering options, take-out and delivery are available, if you’re looking for just a casual night in, the restaurant’s open and inviting dining room can accommodate all party sizes whether you’re a party for 2 or a larger private party anywhere from 30-120 guests.

Wherever you are in the restaurant, you can easily watch the chef, the action at the oven, it’s a show, and the city is really having fun with it,” said co-owner Garrett Fedorkiw, who marvels at even the staff constantly fascinated by the handmaking process done in-house and open-view. These are meal pizzas, experience pizzas, sharinggreat-times pizzas, “make reservations” pizzas. The ingredients are fresh and exciting, the decor is splendid wood. Betulla Burning is a feast for the eye and the palate, and hot with the fire of food passion.

Mind your manners: Five rules for eating out Heading out to dinner for a special occasion? Ensure you don’t make a faux pas by following these six unspoken restaurant rules. 1. Dress the part. Make sure what you wear matches the setting. In other words, don’t put on a three-piece suit if you’re eating at a family diner, and don’t wear gym clothes to an upscale restaurant. 2. Keep personal items off the table. Your keys, wallet, phone and purse don’t belong on the table. Place your bag underneath and leave everything else in your pockets. 3. Don’t use your phone. Enjoy the company of the people you’re with. Constantly texting or checking your phone is disrespectful to your dining companions. 4. Wait to eat. Make sure everyone at the table has their food before you start to eat your own. 5. Don’t forget to tip. Servers are typically paid a negligible wage and most depend on tips to pay their rent. It’s customary to tip between 15 and 20 per cent of the bill, but you can always leave more if you had excellent service. Follow these rules and you’re sure to avoid social blunders and get invited out again next time. 42

• Meals in bowls. Pretty enough for your Instagram feed and healthy to boot, meals in a bowl are more popular than ever. From smoothie bowls at breakfast to Asian inspired noodle bowls for dinner, there’s one for every meal. • Upscale comfort food. The burgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese once reserved for the kids’ menu have been given a makeover. Restaurants that specialize in upscale comfort food are now offering childhood favourites made with premium ingredients. • Insect protein. People have been eating insects for thousands of years. Now, thanks to the high amounts of protein in insects and the sustainability of insect farming, chefs in North America are boldly exploring ways to use this ingredient. This year, try local restaurants featuring these and other food trends. You may even find a new favourite spot to eat.
