2018 Prince George Dining Guide
Dining Out in Prince George For many of us, our best memories are tied to the amazing meals we’ve shared with family and friends. We dwell on our favourite meals, our favourite dishes, our favourite restaurants. We’re always thinking about the last meal and the next one. Our desire for good food is limited only by our imagination. Prince George is blessed with an abundant of amazing restaurants that can deliver us an amazing experience, with either old favourites we can’t get enough of or taking a walk on the wild side, exploring new dishes and styles previously untried. Restaurants aren’t just about the food, however. Dining out brings friends and families together, often to celebrate and our local restaurateurs know how make the whole experience – the décor, the atmosphere, the service and, of course, the food – as special as the moment. The following restaurants in The Citizen’s Dining Guide are proven winners in the food and fun business. Enjoy!

Come down to Canada Games Plaza every Friday this Summer to indulge in
FOODIE FRIDAYS
Sunshine and live music, the smell of meat cooking on the grill, handmade ice cream, bubble waffles, donairs, and 450 people sharing in the fun will set the scene as Foodie Fridays makes a comeback in downtown Prince George. Foodie Fridays will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canada Games Plaza this summer until August 31. The location has changed from Veteran’s Plaza at City Hall due to extensive construction taking place in the area so the Civic Centre and Two Rivers Gallery will be front and centre when the lunchtime event takes place rain or shine. “It’s a beautiful blend of vendors to really hit the taste buds, desires and dietary needs of all the people who will be attending,” Jen Tkachuck, civic events coordinator for the City of Prince George, said. The plaza fountain will add to the ambiance and live music will offer unique entertainment that will showcase local talent including solo performances and five-piece bands. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. Even if people want to enjoy the music while eating their bag lunch and perhaps just indulging in an ice cream or a bubble tea. 14

The Black Clover The Black Clover feels so familiar even though they’ve only been a downtown pub a good year. Maybe it’s their Celtic charm? The friendly ghost of the Cariboo Steakhouse that once lived there? The echo of the dearly passed Sgt. O’Flaherty’s Pub? Owner Troy McKenzie wouldn’t bet a plate of fish ‘n’ chips or a bowl of Irish stew against any of that. He savours those memories himself. It’s all made The Black Clover into a go-to public house. “We’re adjusting the menu nonstop,” said McKenzie. The Black Clover has spaciousness and deliciousness, and also quality entertainment. Thursdays salute great value with friendly prices on burgers and beer, and introduce the week’s new music talent, as carefully selected as the menu. “People set their week by it,” said McKenzie. “The quality is so high, it’s memorable. It’s something you can’t get anywhere else.”

Cimo Cimo Mediterranean Grill makes much more than meals. Every element is a work of art. “Food shouldn’t just be fuel for the body, you’re fueling your soul,” said manager Danielle Beeksma. “The servers know the story behind the food, the wines pairings, and provide that experience to wrap around the food.” Cimo infuses every dish with community love. The ingredients come from curated producers of fresh, local, ethical proteins and produce. “Cimo is known for being the original purveyors of in-house freshly made pasta,” said Beeksma. “Every meal is chef-made for that order. The sauce is made in the pan for that exact dish, the salad is chopped for that specific plate, the dressing is made from scratch.” They partner with local service providers and other independent restaurants to localize their economic impact, and Cimo is a leader in composting, saving energy and reducing waste. Meals at Cimo taste all the better for that extra care.

Moxie’s Grill & Bar When Moxie’s moved into Prince George 17 years ago, it triggered a food entertainment renaissance. The sleek interiors were as delicious to the eye as the menu was to the taste - contemporary entrées and desserts, unique appetizers, and a prime dining experience. Each season the menu gets a workout from executive chef Brandon Thordarson. Moxie’s pours their own craft beer label (Big Life) and house-squeezed hard lemonade. The draught taps have 10 beers in all. Their wine cellar is stocked. Happy Hour is enhanced at Moxie’s, running twice daily from 3-6pm and 9-close, with aggressive food and drink specials like discount wings on Monday and half-price wine bottles on Wednesdays. Live bands sometimes appear. Moxie’s is a hotspot for steaks, seafood, salads and pasta, paired with specialities like Korean fried cauliflower, sushi cones, portobello veggie burgers and lettuce wraps. Over their 17 years, Moxie’s is where solo socializing and reservations for 100 can coexist for great times with great food.

Grand Trunk Tavern The whistle and hiss of the steam era built Prince George and the Grand Trunk. The city’s newest restaurant hearkens to that time of railways, ports and mills. The Grand Trunk is newly born from vintage themes. “We encourage people to look around because we went through northern BC picking for antiques and we found a lot of conversation pieces for our decor,” said manager Brittney Shaw-MacLaren. “We are part of West Coast Hospitality, an all-local company, so we wanted to pay homage to those northern B.C. roots.” Head chef Derek Toews said the menu was designed on the same philosophy. “It’s a homestyle feel, with everything made from scratch. We have homemade classics to elevated dishes, all sourced as close to Prince George as possible.” Even the beer is all-northern. There is a private room for 24 people and Grand Trunk catering will also come to your event, large or small.

Westwood Public House The Westwood is a true neighbourhood pub, no matter where you live in PG. They are one of the most popular daytime restaurants and nightspots in town because of their close connection to community. The management and staff all enjoy sports, so it’s the place with the big screens for the big games. They enjoy live music, so it’s where original bands perform. They enjoy their hometown people, so it’s where charitable events and fundraisers happen. They enjoy food, so no wonder they’re leaders in local food sourcing and craft beer. “The things that are important to the community are important to us,” said owner and good neighbour Nate Coole. “Live entertainment, fresh menu items, a welcoming atmosphere, that’s what we’re all about.” The kitchen and drink menus are constantly evolving, especially the ever-changing feature sheet, staying current with the freshest local ingredients. They truly are the rec room of the Westwood neighbourhood, and everyone’s invited.

The Twisted Cork The Twisted Cork is still turning with the times. Troy McKenzie and executive chef Chris Angus opened a new 200-seat banquet loft this year, with its own bar and dance floor. It’s the latest evolution for one of the longest lasting downtown restaurants. “We still feel young,” said McKenzie. “Prince George developed a downtown restaurant culture. Now we have company. We have never felt stronger.” The Twisted Cork menu has muscle. Steak, ribs, salmon, lamb and chicken are staples, but their unprecedented protein range also offers elk, rabbit, bison, walleye and other unique dishes sourced from sustainable specialists. “The cooking process is so different for each dish. I can’t say enough about the talent in our kitchen,” McKenzie said. “Then you look at our amazing salads, our desserts, and the great drink pairings.” Twisted Cork also has a 85 seat banquet hall, a 12-seat private room, and famous stone, brick and wood interiors.

Chicken Tikka
Karahi King Karahi King has been a Prince George favourite for 11 years thanks to proprietor Hardeep Gill and his wife Jagdish, an award-winning chef. After marinating in hand-ground proprietary blends of herbs and spices, their dishes are prepared traditionally in a heavy pot called a karahi or clay oven (with charcoal fire) called a tandoor. Especially popular are garlic-basil naan and amritsari kulcha breads, and signature dishes chicken tikka, chicken or lamb korma, lamb roganjosh and chicken malai methi. Karahi King has a loyal following for eat-in and take-out options, buffet and menu dining, special event appearances, and catering for large crowds. Many options are gluten-free and vegetarian-vegan. “We offer a special new feature,” said Jagdish. “We do food demonstrations for small groups, cooking in front of you. Nobody else is doing this. We get so many requests.” They are licensed for refreshments like Taj Mahal beer and Amrut whisky.
