If there was anything we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s how wonderful it is to spend time outdoors.
Rain or shine, summer or winter, being outside is essential for our mental and physical health. As we move forward to a time when we can gather together again, both inside and outdoors, as well as travel again, we shouldn’t forget how blessed we are with what
we have outside our own front doors. Last summer, with the travel restrictions in place, we hope you were able to reconnect with the amazing spaces we have right here in central and northern B.C.
We have such amazing diversity of geography in our own backyard, offering such incredible experiences all year round. It awaits you.

B.C. government to provide $50M to help tourism sector
The B.C. government has launched a $50-million program to help tourism operators, Premier John Horgan announced.
Businesses that have more than 150 employees are eligible to apply for up to $1 million, while smaller destinations and tour-bus operators will be eligible to apply for up to $500,000. The money is to come from a $100 million fund that the province first announced in its budget last month.
Eligible expenses include payroll, rent and utility costs.
Many attractions have been very hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and related provincial health orders.
The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), for example, has asked the province for $8 million in order to survive. Horgan did not say whether that amount of money would be possible to provide through other government assistance programs, but
said the PNE could apply for a grant under this program.
“We’re going to continue to work with the city, and the PNE and other attractions across the province,” he said. Horgan was asked if he thought that the $50 million for the sector was sufficient to keep tourist attractions from going under, and he quickly answered, “yes.”
Jonathan Burke, chair of the H.R. MacMillanSpace Centre’s board, was at the announcement and concurred.
“These funds from the government will really contribute towardsour ability to survive,” he said.
Horgan, meanwhile, has come under fire for not working closer with representatives in Washington State and Alaska to stave off a U.S. effort to pass a bill to override the 1886 Passenger Vessel Services Act, which requires foreign-flagged ships that leave a U.S. port to

touch a foreign port before returning to a U.S. port. That law essentially requires all ships travelling from the U.S. mainland to Alaska to touch a B.C. port.
The U.S. Senate last week unanimously passed a bill to allow Alaskan-bound cruise ships to temporarily bypass requirements to stop at a B.C. port. The bill still needs to be passed in the House of Representatives and be signed by U.S. President Joe Biden, but it now appears likely to become law in time for cruise ships to bypass B.C. by August.
What inspired the bill was Canada’s decision to halt large cruise ships from stopping at Canadian ports until February, 2022.
Horgan and others in the B.C. government had said that the U.S. bill’s passage would be unlikely.
Representatives in the cruise sector are concerned that once ships start bypassing B.C., there is an increased likelihood that the U.S. government will allow that to become permanent.
Horgan received a letter from U.S. representatives in February and it was not apparent that he reached out to them.
He stressed on May 18 that the U.S. bill explicitly says that the ability to bypass B.C. ports will expire as soon as B.C. ports are able to welcome the ships.
“They made it clear in that correspondence that this was going to be a temporary measure until such time as further restrictions were lifted,” Horgan said. “So I’m taking great comfort in that the legislation is specific about that.”

Things to try in Quesnel this summer 5
1.Connect with nature on our trails.
Hike the short 1 km trail in Pinnacles Provincial Park for panoramic views of the ancient hoodoos or do some bird watching from the viewing platform on the nature trail in West Fraser Timber Park, right in city limits. If mountain biking is your thing, check out the unique, rocky terrain on Dragon Mountain or climb up Flying Monkeys in Wonderland for a spectacular view of Dragon Lake. The options are endless for all hiking and biking ability levels and our Quesnel Visitor Centre staff can help direct you to a trail that’s right for you.
2. Catch your dinner. Cast a line into one of our
well-stocked lakes and cook up some fresh trout around the campfire. Dragon Lake, Ten Mile Lake, and Bouchie Lake are easily accessed from town. Tzenzaicut Lake is a bit farther out, but is also known as Fish Lake for a reason – it’s almost impossible NOT to catch a fish there. If you don’t have a rod, you can borrow one for free with a tackle box from the Quesnel Visitor Centre.
3. Get a history lesson. First, pick up the Historic Driving Tour map from the Quesnel Visitor Centre, then set your odometer to zero and head down Highway 26, stopping at Cottonwood House, Mexican Hill, Blessings Grave, and Stanley along your way. Step back in time to the
gold rush when you arrive at Barkerville Historic Town and Park. Spend a day (or more) living like it’s 1862 before returning to present day and Quesnel where you can dig further into the area’s history at the Quesnel & District Museum and Archives, and take a historic walking tour of downtown.
4. Reid Street. Quesnel’s downtown is worth exploring. Take a walk down our revitalized main strip and adjacent streets to check out the shops, cafes and restaurants; many have outdoor dining options. Or, maybe pick up some delicious takeout and find a space of your own at LeBourdais Park. The kids can play on the new playground
or in the spray park to cool off. Our new pedestrian wayfinding signage will help you navigate our downtown.
5. Stretch your legs. If you’re looking for a trail where urban meets nature, our Riverfront Trail is just the place. This trails system makes a 5 km loop around downtown Quesnel, passing Heritage Corner and our iconic Fraser River Footbridge. Pass over the bridge to lengthen your walk on the 4 km loop in West Quesnel. Signs along the way share information about our community’s past and present. Keep your eye on the riverbanks for blue herons, foxes, and other wildlife that inhabit the area.
