The Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation is pleased to join with The Citizen, our publication partner for this program, in bringing to our community the 20th Annual Festival of Trees – Celebrating Families. As the newly appointed CEO, it is both my privilege and honour to be a part of the ten days of excitement, sparkle, winter wonderland, and something to warm every one’s heart which begins at the Prince George Civic Centre on November 23rd and will continue until December 1st. We invite all of you, our devoted supporters and valued donors, to join us and our amazing sponsors and dedicated volunteers by attending this major fundraising Festival, with all proceeds going to help bring the best of care, close to home in the North. We sincerely hope you are able to join us this year.
The Citizen is proud to be part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Festival of Trees. The Christmas season in Prince George officially kicks off when this important annual fundraiser by the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation opens its doors at the Civic Centre. The Citizen’s passionate support of the foundation goes back many years I am currently on the foundation’s board of directors and three previous publishers of the Citizen were also devoted foundation board members. Christmas is a time to celebrate our bonds of community and family while also sharing our good fortune with those less fortunate. The Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation deserves our support at Christmas and throughout the year.

Angels we have heard on High Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing over the plains And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains. Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o Shepherds, why this Jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song?
Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And take us to heaven to live with Thee there.

Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing
Blue Christmas I’ll have a blue Christmas without you; I’ll be so blue thinking about you. Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree Won’t mean a thing if you’re not here with me. I’ll have a blue Christmas, that’s certain; And when that blue heartache starts hurtin’; You’ll be do’in’ all right with your Christmas of white, But I’ll have a blue, blue Christmas.
Carol of the Bells Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say, throw cares away Christmas is here, bringing good cheer, to young and old, meek and the bold, ding dong ding that is their song with joyful ring all caroling one seems to hear words of good cheer from everywhere filling the air Oh how they pound,
raising the sound, o’er hill and dale, telling their tale, Gaily they ring while people sing songs of good cheer, Christmas is here, Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas, Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas, On on they send , on without end, their joyful tone to every home Dong Ding dong ding, dong Bong
Deck the Halls
Deck the halls with with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la la. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la la la la la.
See the blazing Yule before us, Fa la la la la la la la la. Strike the harp and join the chorus, Fa la la la la la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la la la la la. Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa la la la la la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la la la la la. While I tell of Yuletide treasure, Fa la la la la la la la la.
Drummer Boy Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, So, to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum, When we come. Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum That’s fit to give the King,
pa rum pum pum pum rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum, On my drum? Mary Nodded, pa rum pum pum pum, The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum I play my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum me and my drum.
Christmas Song Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yuletide carols being sung by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe help to make the season bright Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow Will find it hard to sleep tonight They know that Santa’s on his way He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh And ev’ry mother’s Child is gonna spy to see if reindeer really know how to fly And so, I’m offering this simple phrase to kids from one to ninety-two Altho’ it’s been said many times Many ways; “Merry Christmas to you”.
Do You Hear What I Hear? Do You Hear What I Hear? Said the night wind to the little lamb, do you see what I see Way up in the sky, little lamb, do you see what I see A star, a star, dancing in the night With a tail as big as a kite With a tail as big as a kite Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy, do you hear what I hear Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy, do you hear what I hear A song, a song, high above the trees With a voice as big as the sea With a voice as big as the sea Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, do you know what I know

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the Snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose, And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the Snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow, but the children know, How he came to life one day. There must have been some magic, In that old silk hat they found, For when they placed it on his head, He began to dance around. Oh, Frosty the Snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play, Just the same as you and me.
power when we were gone astray.
Frosty the Snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away.”
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy comfort and joy, oh tidings of comfort and joy!
Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square, sayin’, “Catch me if you can.” He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop, And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the Snowman had to hurry on his way, But he waved good-bye, sayin’, “Don’t you cry; I’ll be back again someday.” Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go; Thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow.

It came upon a Midnight Clear It came upon a midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to men, From heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever o’er its Babel-sounds The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the heavenly strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not The tidings which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing! O ye, beneath life’s crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing; O rest beside the weary road And hear the angels sing! For lo! the days are hastening on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold, When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.

It ’s beginning to look alot like Christmas It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; Take a look in the five-and-ten, glistening once again With candy canes and silver lanes aglow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Toys in ev’ry store, But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be On your own front door. A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots
Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk Is the hope of Janice and Jen; And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; There’s a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing Right within your heart.

When the clock is striking twelve, When I’m fast asleep Down the chimney, broad and black, With your pack you’ll creep All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row Mine will be the shortest one, You’ll be sure to know Bobby wants a pair of skates, Suzy wants a sled Nellie wants a picture book, Yellow, blue, and red Now I think I’ll leave to you What to give the rest Choose for me, dear Santa Claus; You will know the best.
Joy to the World Joy to the world, the Lord is come Let earth receive her King Let every heart prepare Him room And heaven and nature sing And heaven and nature sing And heaven, and heave and nature sing Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns Let men their songs employ While fields and floods Rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy Repeat, repeat the sounding joy No more let sins and sorrows grow Nor thorns infest the ground He comes to make His blessing flow Far as the curse is found Far as the curse is found Far as, far as the curse is found He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love And wonders of His love And wonders, of His love And wonders and wonders of his love

Community Enrichment Celebration Evening
T eddy B
Each year the many people who make the Festival of Trees a successful event for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation and healthcare in our region, are recognized and honoured for their many contributions. The Festival would not exist without community sponsors and volunteers; including the tree designers and organizing committee chairpersons. It is a team effort worthy of celebration and that is what we will do on this, our very special 20th Festival of Trees! It is hoped that many of our past invited team members and sponsors will join us Monday, November 25th 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for this event sponsored by Integris.
The Teddy Bear Breakfast, sponsored by TD Financial, is one of our most successful events! As in the past, we ask families to bring a new, unwrapped child’s toy to the breakfast and in return, each child receives a Teddy Bear from Santa. The new toys are donated to Northern Health and distributed to children in hospitals throughout the region this Christmas. What a great way to share the spirit of Christmas with your children or grandchildren. This delightful event will occur Sunday, December 1st from 8:30 am to 11:00 am among the trees. Tickets are only $15 per person and include a hot buffet breakfast and admission to the Festival for the remainder of that day.

The Tradition Continues
Our Special Little Tree was purchased by Bea Dezell in the 50’s and was used to celebrate Christmas with the Brownie packs in Prince George. After the Brownies, the tree was used by the PG Weavers and Spinners at Studio 2880 for several years and then was sold in a garage sale and bought by Shirley Gratton. The tree re-surfaced at her garage sale and the Festival of Trees committee, led by Shirli-Gene Sadowick,decided that this little aluminum tree had a history that required preserving. Christened Bea’s Tree it was decided that each year at the Festival of Tree’s Gala Auction night, the little tree would be sold to the highest bidder. Winners are able to display and keep the tree through the holiday season. It is then returned to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, for use again at the next year’s Festival of Trees. Winners receive a commemorative photo and special ornament and have their story added to the history of the little tree. Bea’s Tree has become part of the family tradition of the Prince George Festival of Trees.

To accommodate the many seniors in our community who love to come and enjoy the Festival of Trees, we have two Seniors Teas again this year. Both Teas are a wonderful opportunity to visit with friends, view the trees and enjoy the entertainment that we have lined up for the afternoon. These events sell out quickly in advance and tickets are not available at the door. Tickets are $5 each and available at the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation Office, at the University Hospital of Northern BC, or by calling 250-565-2515.

The first one, sponsored by Scotiabank and its employees takes place on Thursday, November 28th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The staff of Scotiabank volunteer their time to prepare the treats, assist the seniors with their seating and serve tea, as well as take the time to ensure that all guests have a wonderful afternoon. The second Seniors Tea takes place on Friday, November 29th, also from 1:00 pm to 3:00pm. This year’s Tea has its’ very own Valet Service courtesy of the Medichair staff. Seniors who traditionally use walkers and need assistance to their table can now park their walkers in the Medichair ‘Parking Lot’ inside the Ballroom.
Jingle Bell Rock Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun Now the jingle hop has begun. Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square In the frosty air. What a bright time, it’s the right time To rock the night away Jingle bell time is a swell time To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet Jingle around the clock Mix and a-mingle in the jingling beat That’s the jingle bell, That’s the jingle bell, That’s the jingle bell rock.
Jingle Bells Dashing thru’ the snow, In a one-horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go, Laughing all the way, Bells on bobtails ring, Making spirits bright, What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight! CHORUS Oh, Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way! Oh! What fun it is to ride, In a one-horse open sleigh! A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride, And soon Miss Fannie Bright was seated by my side. The horse was lean and lank, Misfortune seem’d his lot, He got into a drifted bank And then we got upsot! CHORUS Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight, And sing this sleighing song. Just get a bobtail nag, Two-forty for his speed, Then hitch him to an open sleigh and Crack! You’ll take the lead. CHORUS Oh, Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way! Oh! What fun it is to ride, In a one-horse open sleigh!
Let it Snow Oh the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! It doesn’t show signs of stopping, And I brought some corn for popping. The lights are turned ‘way down low, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! When we finally kiss goodnight, How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And my dear, we’re still goodbyeing. But as long as you love me so, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! page 20 — 2013

Mary’s Boy Child Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day. And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day. Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible said, Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day. Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today, And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day. Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day. While shepherds watch their flocks by night, They see a bright new shining star, They hear a choir sing a song, the music seemed to come from afar.
Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today, And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day. Oh a moment still worth was a glow, all the bells rang out There were tears of joy and laughter, people shouted “let everyone know, there is hope for all to find peace”. Now Joseph and his wife, Mary, came to Bethlehem that night, They found no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight. And then they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn, And in a manger cold and dark, Mary’s little boy was born.

Health is our greatest
wealth M
any advances have been made since the 2000 rally for healthcare shone a light on what Northerners can do together. A transformation has begun; we invite you to join together with Spirit of the North and Northern Health Authority in continuing the transformation by investing in the greatest asset we share … our health. Help us deliver for you the best of care, close to home. Better health outcomes begin by focusing on “upstream” care. First, this means doing everything we can to prevent disease by making healthy life-style choices. The next challenge, however, is to detect conditions early and make an accurate diagnose quickly. For many conditions, the earlier an accurate diagnosis is made, the better the chance for a positive outcome. While early detection and accurate diagnosis includes multiple factors, a key one is current and advanced diagnostic equipment. With that challenge, a current primary focus for Northern Health is increasing the capacity and quality of medical imaging equipment across the region. While supporting advances in healthcare at an unprecedented rate, new medical technology is often prohibitively expensive for our strained healthcare system. NH Northern Interior Chief Operating Officer, Michael McMillan, reports that just one quarter of one per cent (approximately) of the region’s overall budget is available for medical equipment purchases. The opportunity in this challenge, as Northern Health CEO Cathy Ulrich observes, is that funds raised through Spirit of the North can help Northern Health do things that it otherwise could not afford to do. We invite you to help us meet this challenge by donating today!
“Philanthropic giving is the difference that makes the difference” – Cathy Ulrich, CEO Northern Health Authority
As the first step in a comprehensive, regionwide medical imaging up-grade plan, Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation is raising $1.4 million for a new SPECT CT scanner for University Hospital of Northern B.C. This technology captures two different kinds of real-time images (nuclear and radiology) and merges them into one field to produce a more precise image in a shorter time, with up to 50% less radiation than other scans. SPECT CT is a leading technology for early detection and an accurate diagnosis for a wide range of conditions, at times eliminating the need for other tests. It will certainly help facilitate the vision of the best of care, close to home … in the North. page 23 — 2013
What is a SPECT CT?
A
SPECT CT leverages and combines two leading imaging technologies—SPECT and CT—to enable an entirely new level of early and precise detection, diagnosis and treatment. “The best way to describe the SPECT CT is to say that one plus one equals three,” explains Dr. Attariwala. On its own, SPECT (Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography) is a type of nuclear imaging test that uses a safe radioactive substance and a special camera to create 3-D images. With the help of SPECT technology, doctors can analyze the function of the body’s organs. A SPECT scan produces images that show how organs work. For instance, a SPECT scan can show how a patient’s blood flows to their heart or what areas of their brain are more active or less active.
u o y k Than
On its own, CT (Computerized Tomography) combines a series of X-ray views taken from many different angles to create cross-sectional images of bones and soft tissues inside the body, allowing doctors to analyze the anatomy. Combining the two different technologies, the SPECT CT lays one image over the other, enabling the physician to see both function and anatomy at the same time. The technical benefits include … Greater Accuracy: Combining the two technologies provides an extremely accurate image. A scan produces a sequence of image slices. The thinner the slices the more easily a small abnormality can be detected. This new machine will section a scanned area into 0.625millimeter slices, the combined width of about six strands of human hair. Revealing the finest anatomic details it helps localize disorders more precisely. With this precision, SPECT CT imaging can avoid the necessity for multiple scans. Speed: Images from a SPECT CT are captured, on average, 50 per cent faster than when using conventional modalities. This is significant, and especially so when imaging matter in motion, such as blood flowing through a human heart. The faster the capture, the less movement exists in the moment, the less blur in the image, and the clearer the picture from which to detect and diagnose. Smart Technology: This “smart” technology uses complex mathematical formulae (algorithms) to detect abnormalities and diagnose the patient. The unit displays images of what the area—the brain, the cancer, the fracture, etc.—should look like in a healthy body. A foot, for example, has 26 bones (25 per cent of all the bones in your body!). Many of those bones are tiny and well protected, making them difficult to image. With a SPECT-only image, a physician would know that there is something going on in the foot. With a diagnostic SPECT CT, the unit identifies and isolates a specific bone, precisely where the fracture is.
Benefits: A SPECT CT scanner, the first step in a multi-year medical equipment up-grade plan across the Northern Health region, will help physicians detect, diagnose and treat patients with a wide variety of conditions. For example:
Heart Conditions: It will allow for a better diagnosis of calcification of the arteries and help identify the level of risk for a heart attack.
Cancer: It will assist in early and definitive diagnoses of certain types of cancers such as breast and thyroid, allowing for earlier and better treatment decisions. It will also provide greater precision in “road mapping” for procedures such as sentinel node biopsies.

Although significant for everyone, for the pulation it is especially relevant that this scan ces the amount of radiation per procedure, mbined scan obviating the need for two scans.
“This leading technology will take the radiology department at UHNBC from being very good to being world class ... With it we will be able to find the ‘needle in the haystack’.” – Dr. Raj Attariwala, MD, PhD Director, Nuclear Medicine Services, NH
“What if?...What if?” These two words will haunt Judy forever. What if ... a timely and accurate diagnosis of an unforeseen cardiac condition had been made for her husband of 22 years, and the father of her three children?” What If ... current medical imaging equipment had been a reality at UHNBC in April 2006 when Cal, a strong, healthy, visibly fit 48 year old, made a trip to Emergency complaining of unusual and persistent mid-back pain. Even though it was Good Friday and the emergency room was busy, his complaint was attended to. The usual available tests were completed, a prescription for pain medication written, and a follow up appointment suggested for the following week. For Cal, that week never came. Three days later he collapsed, mid-sentence, at work. Paramedics arrived quickly and used the on-site defibrillator, however he passed away immediately. By all accounts, if there had been a chance to save him, he should have been okay. An extensive coroner’s report months later indicated that there were internal indications of some arterial buildup. It was hard to believe with someone so fit, healthy, who never smoked, never drank to excess and who cared about his health. There is no certainty anything would have changed the outcome at the time. Today, however, with the help of newer medical imaging technology, like a SPECT CT scanner, the outcomes for others might be very different. “What if …this scanner saves even one father...one husband... one friend?” page 2013 page 2525——2013

You’re a monster, Mr. Grinch. Your heart’s an empty hole. Your brain is full of spiders, You’ve got garlic in your soul. Mr. Grinch. I wouldn’t touch you, with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole. O Christmas Tree O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, How faithful are thy branches! O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, How faithful are thy branches! Green not alone in Summer time, But in the Winter’s frost and Rime; O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, How faithful are thy branches! This not alone in Summer’s sheen, Its boughs are broad, its leaves are green; It blooms for us when wild winds blow And earth is white with feath’ry snow; A voice tells all its boughs among Of shepherd’s watch and angel’s song; Of holy Babe in manger low The story of long ago.
O Come all ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold Him Born the King of angels; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord. Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens Of heaven above; Glory to God,

O Holy Night O holy night, The stars are brightly shining; It is the night of Our dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world In sin and error pining, Till He appeared And the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, The weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks A new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine, O night, O night divine! Led by the light of Faith Serenely beaming, With glowing hearts By His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star Sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men From Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus In lowly manger, In all our trials Born to be our Friend! He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger; Behold your King! Before the lowly bend! Behold your King! your King! Before Him bend. Truly He taught us To love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break For the slave is our brother And in His name All oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in
Grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us Praise His holy name! Christ is the Lord, Oh praise His name forever,
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim His pow’r and glory Evermore proclaim.
O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie, Above the deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in Thy dark street shineth The everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years, Are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond’ring love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth. How silently, how silently, The wond’rous gift is given;
page 30 — 2013
So God imparts to human hearts The blessing of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still The dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray, Cast out our sins, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

Twas the Night before Christmas Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
“Now! Dasher, now! Dancer, now! Prancer, and Vixen! On! Comet, on! Cupid, on! Dunder and Blixem! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

White Christmas
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten, and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write

Winter Wonderland Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland. Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird He sings a love song, As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown He’ll say: Are you married? We’ll say: No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town. Later on, we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the other kids knock him down. When it snows, ain’t it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland.
