Area Rugs: How to select the right size

When sized properly, they also help visually define a room’s space and function. So what size is the right size? That depends on the space...
Living Room
Area rugs are a popular choice for living rooms. They help add warmth and coziness, and in this case, bigger is definitely better. An area rug should be large enough to fit beneath the front legs of your furniture pieces, and extend at least 12” beyond the ends of your couch. This visually connects your furniture pieces, creating a proportionate look and feel.
Dining Room
Adding an area rug to your dining room, can help make the space either look more formal, or more inviting. Your area rug should be sized according to your table. You want to be sure that each chair can be pulled out, without sliding past the edge of the carpet. Generally, you’ll want to allow 18”-24” beyond the sides and ends of your table to accommodate this.
Bedroom
Placing an area rug beneath your bed in your bedroom will soften the space, and add visual, audio, and tactile comfort. You will want to be sure your rug extends at least 2/3 up the length of your bed and 18”-24” around the sides and foot of the bed. Or, it can be large enough to allow the bed to fully sit on the rug. If you don’t have furniture yet, use painter’s tape to mark out the size and position of your pieces. You can measure for your area rug using these taped outlines. Don’t forget the underlay! It will help keep your area rugs in place, and prevent sliding and rippling, which can both be safety concerns. I recommend your underlay be 1” smaller than the rug on all sides.
