As we celebrate this year, I can’t help but think of the kindness of our donors and sponsors as they continue to give generously to help bring the best of care closer to home right here - where we live, work and play. This absolutely reflects on a brighter future and better health outcomes in the region. We owe our gratitude to all of you who choose to annually support this event. Ten days of excitement, sparkle, and a winter wonderland that has been carefully built with love and attention by our many amazing volunteers and staff. For those who don’t believe that the spirit of Christmas isn’t with us all year long, look no further than the Cariboo wildfires this past summer. We housed more than 10,000 evacuees during July and August, taking them in with open arms. Individuals and businesses generously shared time, money and expertise to make the evacuees feel welcome and cared for. In contrast to the story of Jesus’s birth, there was a room at the inn for everyone. Even the displaced animals found safe lodging. At the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, we have known about the spirit of giving among local residents for many years. Each year, residents show their support for the foundation and celebrate Christmas by joining us at the Festival of Trees, our most important annual fundraiser. Without the Festival of Trees, we couldn’t buy the expensive, state-of-the-art equipment our doctors, specialists, nurses and technicians need to save lives and provide the quality of care we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Like the outpouring of support for the wildfire evacuees, the Festival of Trees happens thanks to an army of tireless volunteers and the philanthropy of individuals and businesses. The Prince George Citizen and its employees are proud to continue their longtime support of both the foundation and our community. Thank you for including us in your holiday celebrations and thank you for supporting the foundation. A Tribute to our many Volunteers Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual or group provides services for no financial gain “to benefit another person, group or organization”.[1] Volunteering is also renowned for skill development and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life. Volunteering may have positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served. For 24 years the Festival of Trees has relied on so many amazing volunteers to make this “giant ship” move each year. While a few are staff of the Spirit of the North, the true driving force behind this event would have to be a group of very dedicated volunteers who just do good work naturally, not for financial gain, and often in the quietest of ways. While we would love to acknowledge all of you individually there are far too many to even begin to name or list. Please know how much we appreciate your assistance, expertise, time, and support. We couldn’t do this without you. For our donors, supporters, sponsors and the general public; please know that if you see individuals wearing red vests helping out, fixing decorations, fluffing trees, helping in one of the many areas that require attention, attending to details, welcoming you when you come in or even running frantically past to attend to something that is urgent; they might be dangling from a tree trying to put up that very last ornament, arriving equipped with tools to assemble everything from fences to hanging lights; they can be covered with glue and glitter or can be orchestrating the next performance to go on stage; they can be in the back doing everything from pricing items to making phone calls or even balancing the finances or they could have been assisting in the office for the past year with every kind of paperwork imaginable, getting the message out through a variety of media venues, sourcing sponsors and committee leads or carefully planning out one of the meals - these are our amazing Festival of Trees Volunteers! So when you see one, remember they are here because they want to, not because they have to. Remember to show them appreciation just as we do, and if you are interested in helping out with this amazing group, please let us know. We’re always looking to recruit passionate individuals who love the holidays and would like to be part of this annual winter wonderland. These incredible volunteers mean so much more to us than the definition above. These are truly the individuals who make the Festival of Trees happen – and have for 24 years!!

24th Annual Fundraising Gala Auction
Volunteer Prince George is proud to sponsor the Volunteer Appreciation Lounge at the Festival of Trees for the very first time. It seems like a natural fit and we are so glad they stepped forward to sponsor the amazing volunteers that have chosen to help out this year. Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation wishes to extend our most sincere gratitude to all of our volunteers. The volunteer Festival of Trees Committee works throughout the year to plan and organize this magical event and hundreds of additional volunteers give of their time to bring Festival of Trees to life and keep it going through the 5 days of set-up, 10 days of public openings, plus post-event take-down and deliveries. Without our volunteers this event would not be possible!
The Fundraising Gala Auction is proudly sponsored by the Northland Auto Group. This major fundraiser for Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation promises to be a wonderful evening of celebration, sparkle and many opportunities to give generously. The evening will feature a live auction, with auctioneer Jim Jungers, including a selection of finely decorated trees and unique gift items. A dance among the trees will follow the live auction, with music by Entertainment Group. To celebrate our 24th year, we are presenting a formal evening with delicious appetizers and dinner beautifully prepared by Chef Jorges Soares, followed by an exquisite Festival of Trees dessert! Each year we also feature “Fund-An-Item”, an opportunity to raise funds for medical equipment in our region. This year we are raising funds in support of another component to the breast health initiative. We are grateful to our Live Auction guests who donate so generously each year.

The evening will include a Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings, music by DJ Entertainment Group, and door prizes, in the midst of a wonderland of decorated trees. Teddy Bear Breakfast
Sunday, December 3 • 8:30-11:00am TD is proud to present the Teddy Bear Breakfast, one of the most popular Festival Events! We ask families to bring a new, unwrapped child’s toy to the breakfast, and in return, each child receives a Teddy Bear from Santa and the TD Elves. The new toys will be distributed to children in hospitals throughout the region this Christmas. This is a wonderful way to share the spirit of Christmas with your children or grandchildren. Tickets are only $20/Adult ($15 for 12 and under) and include a hot buffet breakfast and admission to Festival for the remainder of that day. Frosty the Snowman Frosty the Snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose, And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the Snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow, but the children know, How he came to life one day. There must have been some magic, In that old silk hat they found, For when they placed it on his head, He began to dance around. Miracle Mirror Trees Several years ago, the Northland Auto Group initiated a special concept that truly embodies the spirit of giving: their annual donation of trees decorated, and matched with a “Miracle Mirror Tree” – a second tree with gifts that will be donated to a family chosen by the St. Vincent De Paul Society of Prince George. Their wish is that the Miracle Mirror Trees will help inspire the spirit of giving for everyone this year and in the future.

Silent Auction
Coat Check The Barracuda Swim Club will be our returning volunteers in the Coat Check. Use of the Coat Check is by donation, and all proceeds go to the swim club! Keep your hands free and support a great athletic club in our city while you explore the Festival!
Story Time
Most of the beautifully decorated Trees, Little Houses and Wreaths are available for sale through the Silent Auction that closes at 3:30pm on Sunday, December 3. If you have your eye on one or more of the silent auction items, it is a good idea to be at the Festival near closing time on Sunday to make your final bid! The option of Reserve Bidding is available; see a Festival Committee member at the event for details or call the Spirit of the North office 250.565.2515.

Bea’s Tree Although not with us in person, Bea Dezell’s memory lives on with the spirit of Christmas through Bea’s Tree. Just as Bea lived her life – helping others – so does this little tree. Each year revenue generated at the live auction is 100% directed to the area of greatest need through Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. This special little tree was purchased by Bea in the 1950’s and was used to celebrate Christmas with the Brownie packs in Prince George. After the Brownies, the tree was used by the PG Weavers and Spinners at Studio 2880 for several years and then was sold in a garage sale and bought by Shirley Gratton. The tree re-surfaced at another garage sale and the Festival of Trees committee, led by Shirli-Gene Sadowick, decided that this little aluminum tree had a history that required preserving. It’s unique, tiny, and radiant… just like Bea Dezell herself. Christened Bea’s Tree, it was decided that each year at the Festival of Tree’s Gala Auction night, the little tree would be sold to the highest bidder. Winners are able to display and keep the tree through the holiday season. It is then returned to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, to be auctioned again at the next Festival of Trees. Winners receive a special ornament and have their story added to the history of the little tree. To date Bea’s tree has warmed the hearts of many through the holiday season and during its’ 13 years it has raised $176,150 in donations towards healthcare equipment – This year could be your year!! Bea’s Tree has become part of the family tradition of the Prince George Festival of Trees.

Making a difference for patients right here at
“Everyone said I was too young”… After finding a lump in her left breast, she worried a little, but thought the odds were in her favour. It shouldn’t have been anything to be concerned about as she was a healthy and happy 31-year-old with no family history of breast cancer. However, upon this discovery, her husband insisted she went to the walk in clinic the very next morning. At first look, the doctor wasn’t too concerned given her history, but ordered an ultrasound just to be sure.
As a physiotherapist, she knew her body well. After finding the lump, she could now feel it growing inside of her. This diligence became Regan’s strength in the weeks and months ahead. Within weeks, what started as a long, thin, and unusual thickness in her breast tissue, began to feel heavier and firmer. The ultrasound results showed the mass to not be malignant, and a biopsy for further testing was optional. A wait for a biopsy that was initially going to take six weeks, became three days with her persistence and determination. During the biopsy, the mass still looked benign (non-cancerous), but it had grown almost 1cm larger in less than three weeks. Regan panicked a little more with the news of the rapid growth, but continued to be reassured that it just couldn’t be cancer. December 29th, 2016 is a day Regan will remember forever. She was sitting alone in her doctors office, and her doctor walked in with “I have bad news for you.” At the prime of her life, Regan felt as if everything was crashing down around her: she was diagnosed with an invasive and aggressive form of
breast cancer. That day she became a statistic and a member of a percentage of people that no one would ever want to be a part of. She was one of the 4% of Canadian women in their 30’s diagnosed with breast cancer. She left the office in tears with a shattered heart, and a ID number as a cancer patient.
Treatment couldn’t happen fast enough for Regan. She was ready to fight back as the tumor had now grown to 4.1cm by mid January 2017. She was young but had an aggressive tumor. This would required aggressive treatment for a successful outcome. Four months of eight rounds of dosedense chemotherapy was first line of attack, followed quickly with a double mastectomy, and then 28 rounds of radiation. Eight months later, at the end of treatment, Regan had the outcome that she prayed for: no evidence of disease. Today Regan looks back on the year 2017 as a nightmare whirlwind: moments filled with confusion and heart breaking frustration, while dedicating her spirit to perseverance and determination. During her treatment she searched for alternatives, second opinions, best practices, and programs. She compared her treatment to others around the world, and looked for support from other women in their 30’s. Online she found too many young women in their 20s and 30s at various stages of their breast cancer journey. She formed life-

long connections to many who would provide strength and support to her, just as she would for them. It is crucial to have access to the right equipment, in a timely manner, with near immediate results. Although the Breast Imaging Centre was only a plan at the time when Regan was diagnosed, she is so pleased to see that with help, vision, and persistence of our community this centre is now up and running. The addition of the Tomosynthesis will only add to the level of care already in place and provide a more accurate diagnosis for patients. It is one more level of reassurance to someone going through this journey. Regan often found herself saying a common phrase: “It is what it is.” Some variables are just uncontrollable. However, we can control our perspective on life and choose to see the beauty within it, even during the darkest times. She wants her story to reach as many women as possible, especially younger women. She wants them to be diligent in their regard for breast health and perform self breast exams monthly. Cancer does not discriminate who it happens to and early detection is key for less invasive treatment, and overall survival. Regan is a beautiful, stunning, and amazing young woman. As an advocate for breast health, she is fearless.

home in the North, where we live, work, and play. Last year was a huge success! Many of you who joined in the Gala Fundraising Auction witnessed over $220,000 raised in a very quick 15 minutes. This was the kick off to a $500,000 capital campaign to support many pieces of peripheral equipment that would make the digital mammography unit at UHNBC be a complete Breast Health Imaging Centre. During the next 10 months the remainder of the funding poured in from individuals and corporations who supported the need for this and on September 28th, 2017 the centre opened. This centre will see on average 6000 scans per year, and our hope is that more people understand that the first step, and often the most important one, is to go for a regular mammogram so this number should increase.
This year we hope to fund an additional component to the centre – called Tomosynthesis.
What is Breast Tomosynthesis? Breast tomosynthesis is an advanced form of mammography, a specific type of breast imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to detect cancer early – often before women experience symptoms – when it is most treatable. It provides a clearer, more accurate view compared to digital mammography alone. Conventional digital mammography produces one image of overlapping tissue, making it difficult to detect cancers. Performed with digital mammography using the same scanner, breast tomosynthesis takes multiple images of the entre breast. It allows our specialized breast radiologists to see through layers of tissue and examine areas of concern from all angles.

Earlier detection of small breast cancers that may be hidden during digital mammography, Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities Fewer unnecessary biopsies or additional tests Greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors which occur in 5% of breast cancer patients Clearer images of dense breast tissue A decrease in call backs, which may lessen anxiety for patients.
Sadly, few of us go through life without being touched by breast cancer either in our own lives or through someone near and dear to us. Please help us in our endeavor to advance the Breast Health Imaging Centre one step further in the ability to detect and diagnose more quickly and more accurately.

Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows.
Then one foggy Christmas eve Santa came to say: “Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolph play in any reindeer games.

Winter Wonderland Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland.
