Working Together for a GREAT Neighborhood

President’s Message – Guy Karm

! Well, it’s hard to believe that we are almost half way through the summer. It’s nice to see everyone out and about and to visit and catch up on events with your neighbors. It appears to me that neighborhood violations are again at a low. Thank you to all of our neighbors who are working hard to follow the rules with respect to their b o a t s , RVs a n d c o m m e r c i a l vehicles. Yo u r n e i g h b o r s appreciate your efforts. The Summer Kick Off party was a great success. The Social CommiFee hit a home run this year with a Jimmy BuffeF theme and a party ball of margaritas. A great job by Chairman Sue Knowling and her able crew of Lauri Mitchell, Sue Dindia, Dave Knowling, Susan McDonald, -1 ! -

Debbie Denten and Lynn Meinzer. special thanks to Trina Bryant and newcomers Carolan & Krystin August, who helped with the children's games. Also, another Fishing Derby has taken place. You may recall that we were unable to have the Fishing Derby two years ago due to the extensive reconstruction work on the north shoreline of the lake allowing limited access to the lake frontage. Fortunately, Jim and MaryAnne Stipak, who live on the west side of the pond, agreed to let the kids fish off of their property last year and again this year. Thank you Jim and MaryAnne as you saved the Fishing Derby again this year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank George and Cathy Reichl for being in charge of the Fishing Derby this year and all of the people involved in the Fishing Derby year after year. While I am thanking people, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the entire neighborhood to thank the members of the Preservation and Beautification CommiFee for all of their hard work. How about those entrance ways. They look outstanding with the lights and the spring planting. Also, a big

thank you to the Preservation Beautification commiFee for all of their hard work on the islands. I am sure that you have noticed all of their new designs, plants, shrubs and grass on the many islands, they are truly beautiful. A great job by Lauri Mitchell, Lynn Meinzer, Rich Coha, Nancy Groch, Dave Knowling, Sue Knowling, Terri Manfreda and everyone else that I may have forgoFen to mention who also volunteer. Thank you for making the neighborhood so beautiful. Finally, we have many new neighbors. If you are looking to be more involved in the neighborhood or wish to meet more of your neighbors, think about volunteering. You may wish to serve as a member of the Board of Directors. Or, if you feel that you cannot contribute that much time, then maybe volunteer to serve on a commiFee. Please contact any Board member if you are interested in being more involved in the neighborhood. Remember, our neighbors make Plum Grove Estates such a wonderful place to live.

Community News Plum Grove Pool As many long-time residents of Plum Grove Estates already know, the Rolling Meadows Park District decided to close the swimming pool last year and, as the sad picture on the right shows, the pool has now been filled with dirt and stone. Park District plans are still on track to build and landscape the picnic pavilion this fall. The finished pavilion will be open in the Spring of 2019. Planned changes for next year include adding outdoor bathrooms. The Plum Grove Pool has been filled.

Cannizzar, Joanne Fallon, Bill & Josie Maniscalco, Donna Mullen, Nancy Marando, Janet Engelen, Jeff Berg, Paula Hewson, Jill Berls, Terri Manfreda, Howard & Pauline Pohl, Thomas Clark, Linda Harrison, Gene Kim, Florentina Popo, Brian Salem, Madeline Madsen, Vivian Veres, Marcia & Ed Fradkin, MaryJo Long, William Huley, Ken Flobeck, Sue Dindia, Mike Poahls, Steve Richenberger, Jim Pritchard

Guest Speaker – Lt. John Konrad, Cook County Sherriff s Police Topic: Recent Criminal Activity in the neighborhood. The Lieutenant reminded residents to not be afraid to call 911. He also mentioned to have the non-emergency number available. He said that so far in 2018 there have been 1, 200 case reports in this area but most of the cases were premise checks and domestic issues. There -5 ! -

have been two “ruse” burglaries and a car is to get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other and look for suspicious behavior. He recommended having lights on from dusk to dawn and that bee spray can be a good defense. He said you can call 911 or the nonemergency number to have a premise check on your home. A question was raised about installing speed trailers and he said he would check for availability. New Neighbor Introduction – Gary Dindia, introduced the following new residents who each then spoke a little more about their interest in moving into Plum Grove Estates: Konrad & Christina Greg and Sonya Blacker Wylacia & Reese Harris Pat and Meghan Johnson Brian Salem Approval of Minutes – A motion to approve the February General Meeting minutes was made by Sue Dindia, seconded by Bill Maniscalco and unanimously approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Amy Pritchard reported that the association is within budget except for pond maintenance and, because of a rate increase, the clubhouse rental. She reported that most of the dues for 2018 have been collected; the actual out standing percentage is less than 4% of total residences. She reported that after having spent around $71,000 for upgrading the pillars, we are rebuilding our funds back to the $75K. We currently have a balance of $50,000. Bill Huley moved and Josie

Maniscalco seconded a motion to move the report into records. President’s Remarks – Guy Karm, President of PGE POA, discussed the upcoming Summer Welcome Party, to be held at Plum Grove Park, June 21. He also reported on behalf of George Reichl that the auditing committee has approved the 2017 PGE POA finance audit. Preservation and Beautification Committee – Rich Coha reported on behalf of Lauri Mitchell, who was absent from the meeting. There are two islands that are being redesigned and upgraded. He mentioned that a new Korean pear tree has been planted. The Preservation and Beautification Committee is asking for anyone willing to donate large decorative rock, which is needed for the islands. There was a question about a tree that was removed and he replied that it is up to the Palatine Township to add or remove trees to this neighborhood. In this particular case, the tree was leaning too far over the road. There was also a question about the look of the pond. Again, his response was that the complete overhaul and design of the pond was planned and paid for by the township. Architectural Control – Dave Freeman was absent but provided a report that there was a new roof approved, several approvals for landscaping and plantings, as well as a request for some electrical work. Area Control – Dave Knowling reported that Cook County has told the church on the frontage road that they have to clean up the debris around the two churches and the home they own. He reminded that parking trailers and boats in drive ways is also against Cook County regulation. He noted that it’s an expensive fine if Cook County starts ticketing. He warned that large road vehicles may be moved around within the neighborhood as the -6 ! -

repaving in PGE continues. As it starts to warm up, he asked to keep a lookout for light vandalism activities around the bridge. This has historically occurred during summer school vacation. If debris or objects are found in the creek, please call the township. They will contact an outside service to remove it. Repairs on Algonquin Road will continue and there was one comment from George Manthey that if you smell gas outside a location, please contact the gas company. Civic Affairs – There was no report as Steve Sperling was absent. Landscaping – Lynn Meinzer reported that the spring cleanup had finished. The landscaping company, M & B, had to delay cleanup and planting due to the amount of rain in May. She also mentioned that they are looking for rocks 12 inches or more in diameter for the Preservation & Beautification island project. Social Committee – Sue Knowling reported that the invitations went out for the Summer Welcome party, scheduled for June 21, 5:30 to 8:30 PM. The theme of the party is Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville. The planning committee has met several times to prepare for the event. Newsletter/Communications – Rich Coha reported that a new Plum Grove Directory is in the process of being printed. The directory is usually printed every three years, but because of all the new residents it was decided to update it now. It will be mailed out to all residents when completed. Old Business – No old business New Business – Brief History of Plum Grove Club park, by Gary Dindia: The Plum Grove Club was built by one of the builders as a Private Equity Club. Although most

(if not all) of the early members were Plum Grove residents, the Club itself was not part of the Plum Grove Estates,Homeowners Association. Members paid an annual fee to continue their membership. The Club alternated between a strong tennis presence and a strong swim team presence. There were a number of tennis leagues and a vibrant swim team. At one point there were over 120 kids on the swim team.

Board Member Reports Membership - Lauri Mitchell We have added 49 new homeowners to PGE since 2016. This spring our neighborhood welcomed six new homeowners.

Eventually expenses became such that there were not enough members to support the club (the main expense became property taxes). The land is deeded for recreational use only and can only be used as such. As different avenues were explored, Rolling Meadows Park District was the only entity interested. They were able to secure a grant (not sure if state or federal) and took over the Plum Grove Park. Adjournment – A motion was made by George Manthey, seconded by Pat Bryant, and unanimously approved to adjourn. President Guy Karm adjourned the meeting at 8:54 PM

Did Your Groot Waste Collection Bill Increase? PGE POA residents who live within Palatine Township have Groot as their waste collection service. Recently Groot has increased their rates but you can get them lowered with a phone call. Groot tries to match their competition’s rates but will only do so if you call and identify yourself as a member of Plum Grove Estates and ask for a rate reduction. Call the Groot office at: 847-734-6400 -7 ! -

If anyone would like to join our committee to plan our annual Holiday Party, please contact Sue Knowling at suzknow@comcast.net. We always appreciate volunteers to help in setting up, manning the bar and cleaning up after the party.

Landscape – Lynn Meinzer The Common Area Landscaping of Plum Grove Estates has been receiving plenty of rainwater to date and shows the results with healthy, full plants. Many of the islands are looking very colorful and interesting with the new perennials, shrubs and evergreens planned out and put in place with some hired help, but lots of effort by members of the Preservation and Beautification Committee. Special appreciation to members: Laurie Mitchell, Terri Manfreda, Nancy Groch, Dave & Sue Knowling, and Rich Coha. Though I am a member of the committee, with the landscape company work this 2018 season – I have been missing in action but, like you, watching the progress. Recently, there were inquiries about the wild flower plantings along the shoreline of Brookdale Lake. These plants were suggested by the ecologist, working with the Palatine Township Road District, who analyzed the situation of shore erosion, and figured out the solution that was installed by PTRD. The shoreline was then planted to provide taller and shorter wildflower plants. Each blooms at the appropriate time. I have written to Supervisor of PTRD, Roland Sachs, about the shoreline appearance, but have no answer regarding inclusion of more colorful plants yet. The PTRD has been taking care of paving work and winter damage of grass repair at PGE. Hope to get an answer soon about additional and other plants. With the hot weather approaching, please remember to give your planted beds and lawn extra water, preferably early in the day, so it has time to evaporate during the day. Enjoy these days of summer! -8 ! -

Area Control – Dave Knowling We have welcomed many new families to our neighborhood recently. With school out for the summer, please be watchful for children as you drive in Plum Grove Estates. Please help with our neighborhood watch efforts. We have experienced costly vandalism to our light fixtures near the bridge and at the Crestwood entrance during the summer months in the past. Considering this, as well as the recent criminal activity in our area, it might be beneficial to leave on additional lighting at your house through the night. Report any suspicious activity day or night to the Cook County Sheriff’s Department at 847-635-1188. Dial 911 in an emergency. Plum Grove Estates is a “No Soliciting” neighborhood, and this is posted. No one should be selling anything door to door. Please remind individuals of this if they come to your door, and call the police at the number above if you are suspicious of their activity. The remodeling work at 397 Knollwood Ct. has resumed. There were delays in the project because Cook County has been monitoring progress and required additional work to be done. Debris piled across the entire length of the property along the creek bank at 388 Meadow Lane remains, even after a citation was written by Cook County. This house is within Plum Grove Estates, but is owned by the Coptic church. They will receive a court summons and fines if the area is not cleared. Palatine Township has completed their paving for this year. They will be repairing cobblestone areas disturbed as a result of the paving. Soil and grass seed will be added as needed at the edge of the newly paved roads. The remainder of Plum Grove Estates will be repaved next year. Contact Roland Sachs at Palatine Township (847 -358-6336) if you see any creek blockage.

If there is any neighbor who would like to donate one or two large “impact rocks for our islands, please contact me at laurimitch@comcast.net or any member of our committee.

Beautification Committee Report -Lauri Mitchell, Committee Chair Our committee completed two high impact islands on Briarwood and Longacres. We spent many hours researching, planning and planting these islands. Thank you to all our neighbors who have written to us and thanked us for this island renovation project. Also, our team appreciates those neighbors who have let us use their hoses to water our new sod and plantings as well as those of you who have helped us with watering. Along with helping us with the sod and new plantings, we utilized the services of Tomas Diaz Landscaping to thin out the dead branches on each of the island trees.

Our committee members are Rich Coha, Lynn Meinzer, Terri Manfreda, Dave and Sue Knowling, and Nancy Groch. All of them are to be commended for their dedication to beautify and preserve our neighborhood. Please thank them if you see them around! Lauri Mitchell

We are now in the planning stages to work on the narrow islands on Brookdale Lane. We are hoping this project will be completed this year. Our committee has worked hard to stay within our PGE budget and all of us appreciate the support of the Board for further projects.
