While repairing a roof for his church, long-time football player Ben suffered a devastating fall that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Following a lengthy surgery, he chose to work with the doctors and therapists at the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute’s spinal cord injury center of excellence, where, with the help of state-of-the-art facilities, he’s regaining the strength to live both a functional life and an athletic one. Today, Ben is involved with the Mighty Penguins, an adult sled hockey league, and is still determined to give back to his community. He recently started his own foundation to provide emotional and financial support to those who have suffered similar life-altering injuries. Time to Eat, Pittsburgh by eatPGH (Julia Gongaware, Mandy McFadden, Sarah Sudar and Laura Zorch)

P

ittsburgh, Pennsylvania

— what a pal! This gem of a city was once a downtrodden shell of the steel industry, the butt of bad jokes and “Smoky City USA.” Pittsburgh had been through it. But no one is laughing now — Pittsburgh is on the comeback trail. The city has maintained its approachable demeanor, befriending everyone who enters its big, bridge-y arms. Now that the smoke has cleared, the ’Burgh is the mecca of technology, arts and ... wait for it ... cuisine! Yeah, you heard that right. Pittsburgh food is a delight, and dining out here is pure fun. With what seems like a new restaurant or food-related venture opening every week, it’s never been a more exciting time to be hungry. No longer a one-sandwich town, Pittsburgh has learned to embrace exotic cultures, flavors and ideas. Yes, we may still yearn for fries on our salads (who are we

6 CITY PAPER DINING GUIDE 2014 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

kidding, on everything), but chefs from generations young and old are expanding Pittsburghers’ palates. The culinary community is taking chances and making waves (we see you, Justin Severino, of Cure, serving stingray meat, and Kevin Sousa, of Superior Motors, starting up in Braddock). But the best part about new-found food glory? The chefs are transforming our taste buds as a team, finding interesting ways to collaborate and collectively make Pittsburgh and its food scene a better place. This city just screams, “Let’s be friends!” and the chefs listen. So how do you sort through all of the awesome happening here? Well, first things first, take it from a team of four: recruiting friends for your culinary adventures starts you off on the right foot. Every meal among friends is a great one. Engaging in meaningful conversation over delicious dishes makes that meal a

memory. As eatPGH, we often find ourselves eating together and talking, laughing and scheming over Pittsburgh’s best offerings. These shared experiences have shaped our friendship as a foursome — food literally brought us together over the past five years. You can find us sharing small plates and dim sum at the new and fabulous Grit & Grace. Steam buns with housemade mortadella and cream-cheese biscuits with short ribs are perfect to share. Or, you can see us downing meatball after meatball at the new Emporio at Sienna Mercato. Because truly, you can’t go wrong with a table filled with pork, beef and chicken balls topped with an array of sauces. So grab a friend, or two, or three, and design your own food crawl. Pick a neighborhood (Downtown, Lawrenceville and Bloomfield are particularly hot right now) and get eating. Food, good food, creates lasting bonds.

This city just screams, “Let’s be friends!” and the chefs listen.

Now, it may be hard to believe, what with all of the potholes and arctic weather conditions, but Pittsburgh is enjoyable in every season. So second on your eating list: Enjoy the city no matter the weather — it will surprise and delight! Spring and summer breathe new life with the revived Pirates ball team (hooray!); bike trails buzz with adventurists; and renovated city parks are dotted with picnics and barbecues. Pack your picnic baskets with fresh salads and baked goods from Bluebird Kitchen, or order up a great fried chicken from Carmi’s Family Restaurant on the North Side. Farmers markets, outdoor concerts and arts festivals mark the calendar from April to September too. So much to enjoy! >>

A trio of meatball sliders from Emporio at Sienna Mercato: bacon cheeseburger, chicken and beef

Pittsburgh food is a delight, and dining out here is pure fun.

And, when the weather turns, fall and winter activities take you in a warm embrace and guarantee you six magical months of theater, museums, indoor markets and comfort food. And nothing says comfort like a burger that melts in your mouth, and Butterjoint in Oakland has you covered.

Finally, don’t forget to bring one little piece of knowledge with you everywhere you go: Pittsburgh loves ya. It really does. The affordable prices of food, the beauty of our cityscape and the gosh-darn wonderfulness of our citizens speaks that truth every day. Eating at local spots allows you to reciprocate that feeling to our fair ’Burgh. So, cement your friendships over cake, and noodles, and steaks, and mashed potatoes. Take to the streets in the wind, sun, snow and rain. And remember to spread some Pittsburgh love. Our city may be small, but we have a big heart. We also happen to have some really excellent restaurants. 8 CITY PAPER DINING GUIDE 2014 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

ust a few years ago, there weren’t that many hand-crafted cocktails in Pittsburgh to talk about. Now, it’s an ever-changing list. New cocktail hot spots are opening regularly, and existing bars are taking their cocktail menus seriously. The city even has its own week-long celebration of cocktails in September. In no particular order, here are our favorite cocktails in the city (right now):

“EL REY” AT ROUND CORNER CANTINA The El Rey Margarita takes a standard margarita and notches it up a little, using Don Julio Anejo Tequila, Combier d’Orange, fresh citrus juices and a Chile De Arbol garnish for a kick of heat. The quality ingredients show in the drink: With the first sip, it’s clear that this isn’t a neon-green margarita from a mix. 36 CITY PAPER DINING GUIDE 2014 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

arm weather’s finally on its way and we can’t think of a better match for outdoor concerts and backyard cookouts than summer beer! We asked Yuengling to give us insight on its new Summer Wheat, one of the summer beers we’re most excited about.

Q: What sets Summer Wheat apart from the other beers you sell? A: This is a brand new recipe for us. The new Summer Wheat is a German Weizen style beer with exciting and new hops and yeast.

Q: What’s one thing everyone should know about the new Summer Wheat? A: It is thirst quenching and full of character. It delivers a thick, creamy head with overtones of banana and clove esters.

Q: What is the brewing process? A: Yuengling, Summer Wheat is carefully brewed with a combination of wheat and barley malts.

Q: What was the inspiration behind making Summer Wheat? A: We wanted a seasonal beer that was perfect for the summertime. Yuengling, Summer Wheat is great for hot days and backyard grilling.

Q: When will Summer Wheat be available? A: It will be available at the beginning of April and throughout the summer season. In the Yuengling Tradition, this quality beer will be affordably priced. 40 CITY PAPER DINING GUIDE 2014 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT
