THERE WILL BE (TWO MILLION) LIGHTS One of the best parts of the holiday season is seeing all the beautiful lights that decorate houses, gardens, and public places. One of the worst parts of the holiday season is the frigid temperatures that make it hard to be outside. Lumaze, an indoor holiday festival, is coming to 31st Street Studios with a display of two million lights, along with a holiday market, food and drinks, and live music. Enjoy the holiday spirit without the holiday frostbite. Sat., Nov. 23-Sat., Jan. 4. 77 31st Street, Strip District. $14.99-19.99. Free for children three and under. lumazelights.com/pittsburgh-christmas

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SUPERSTAR Some celebrate the life of Jesus Christ in a church pew, others cheer on the religious icon in theater seats after a night of dinner and booze. Whether you believe that Jesus Christ is your lord and savior, or simply good material for a musical, PNC Broadway’s Jesus Christ Superstar will give you the opportunity to grant him a belated Birthday gift by seeing actors sing and dance on stage in his honor. Tue., Dec. 31-Sun., Jan. 5. Benedum Center, 803 Liberty Ave., Downtown. $33-115. trustarts.org

It’s the gift that just keep on giving. The entire city unified for one glorious moment this October, joined together in support of a Port Authority bus that was swallowed by a sinkhole in Downtown Pittsburgh. Social media posts about the sinkhole went viral, the story went national, and the city cheered when the bus was finally rescued. Local businesses soon memorialized the sinkhole bus on T-shirts, cupcakes, and more. Our favorite, released just in time for the holidays, is local artist Toby Fraley’s $30 hand-painted resin sinkhole bus holiday ornament. Order quickly — the ornament has gotten so much attention that sinkhole fans might have to wait until 2020 for delivery. tobyfraley.com 8 PGHCITYPAPER.COM

IT’S A WONDERFUL FILM Pittsburgh’s Best Power Couple, according to Pittsburgh City Paper readers in this year’s Best of Pittsburgh readers’ poll, are John and Giselle Fetterman. And for good reason. The lieutenant governor and first lady have a powerful influence throughout the state and both maintain a personal connection to the people of the area. It’s what makes them the perfect couple to present It’s a Wonderful Life at The Rangos Giant Cinema this holiday season. Fun fact: The iconic film also stars another beloved Western Pennsylvania claim to fame: Indiana-born Jimmy Stewart. 3 p.m. Sat., Dec. 14. MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY MEAL — Leah Lizarondo, co-founder and CEO of 412 Food Rescue

“I grew up in the Philippines, so it’s very hard to get my favorite holiday food. (Unless Chef Raf Vencio makes it in one of his Filipino food pop-ups in the city! Hint hint.) It’s a rice cake called bibingka! It’s a fluffy, soft rice cake steamed and baked in a banana leaf, topped with a salty egg — so it’s this hot, sweet, salty treat, usually eaten for breakfast during the season. YUM.” 28 PGHCITYPAPER.COM

“I definitely love Christmas and, being from Puerto Rico, we celebrate like no other country. Seriously, our celebration continues until mid-January. Coquito (similar to eggnog but with rum, coconut milk, and no egg), and I’m in the holiday spirit! Something I still make every year and share with staff and regular customers.”

POPULAR POINTE

Get swept away up in holiday romance and adventure when the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre presents its annual production of The Nutcracker. After being gifted a Nutcracker on Christmas Eve, a young girl is transported to a world of magic and excitement. There’s a doll and a rat, and they fight. It’s crazy. The live show features dazzling choreography set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, as well as a few surprise nods to Pittsburgh. Showtimes vary. Fri., Dec. 6-Sun., Dec. 29. 237 Seventh St., Downtown. $28-112. pbt.org

Pittsburgh artist Matt Buchholz of Alternate Histories has always been one of our favorite calendar designers. His offbeat style, dropping monsters, zombies, and aliens into old-timey scenes, help make every month a little easier to get through. This year, though, he outdid himself, printing a 2020 calendar onto a freakin’ kitchen towel. The vintage-inspired design has a Tyrannosaurus rex looming over a quaint cottage, the perfect gift to start off what promises to be a tumultuous year. alternatehistories.com
