Family caregivers “walk the red carpet” at annual recognition event The Beaver County Office on Aging (BCOA) held its 13 th annual Family Caregiver Program event at the Monaca Turners on June 28. This year’s event honored the program’s “Award Winning Caregivers” with a fun theme centered around “Going to the Movies” and

the Academy Awards. It provided caregivers with a relaxing day away from their caregiving duties, and provided some education and tips on taking care of their loved ones, as well as themselves. Eighteen caregivers and their guests were welcomed

to the event by BCOA’s Care Management Supervisor Tesi Dye. A keynote was presented by Leslie Benedetto of B-Well Nation. She offered tips on how exercise and yoga can help

2016 study showed that over half of Americans are not using all of their yearly vacation time. I chuckle when hearing this and think to myself, “I wonder how that is working out for them?” Apparently, not too well, according to Project Time Off, a leading national movement to transform American attitudes and change behavior. Many workers experience stress and burnout by not using their earned benefits. The organization promotes that there needs to be a shift in culture so that taking time off is understood as essential to personal wellbeing, professional success, business performance and economic expansion. I am not one of these people. Many of you know this. The one question friends and readers of Beaver County Senior News ask me regularly is, “Where are you going next?” My latest adventure with my travel companions was a yacht cruise along the Atlantic Ocean

The cruise featured the cuisines of these countries. We got an opportunity to go on a walk with the yacht chef to one of the markets in France to see what he would buy to use for meals, and he treated us to samples. It was fun to see how the staff used these foods during our lunches and dinners for several days afterward. Since it was over 90 degrees in Lisbon, we opted to take a Tuk Tuk, a threewheeled vehicle tour of part of the city. It was a great way to see the hilly, cobblestoned street city. It was fun to see Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. A popular site is the Cathedral of St. James, the destination on the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage route started in the Ninth Century and continues today. St. Malo in Brittany is a beautiful, foursided walled city, and several of us walked along the top of the wall, which totaled one mile and provided beautiful views of the city and water. A highlight was visiting Mont St. Michel, an island commune in Normandy, France, known for its preserved Norman Benedictine Abbey of St. Michel at the peak of the rocky island. It is surrounded by streets that wind around the medieval town. During the tour of the abbey, you have to climb over 300 steps to get to all the different levels of the structure.

Taking time off provides me an opportunity to rest and recharge. It helps me to be ready to tackle new challenges when I get back. I realize not everyone can get away to travel, but it is important to get some breaks—especially caregivers. I meet some very dedicated and hard-working caregivers who keep their loved ones experiencing health challenges at home. Some caregivers are like some working people—they do not want to schedule time off. I encourage you to do so. Maybe you can ask a family member or a friend to sit with your loved one for a few hours. There are adult day care centers where your loved one can be safely for several hours so you can take a break. It is important for caregivers to relax, shop, go to the doctor or even just take a walk. You can consider the Caregiver Support Program through the Beaver County Office on Aging. We have an article in our Keen-Age News section where you can read about the details. BCSN

Beaver County History Tidbits * The Harmony Society was involved in the silk industry from 1830 to 1855, and it had mulberry trees, located in present-day Ambridge, so the silk worms could be fed the leaves. In later years, apple trees replaced the mulberry trees. * In the 1800’s, there were many industries in Fallston, including saw mills, oil mill, sash mill, wire mill, paper mill, woolen mill and flour mill. These companies were able to use the water from the Beaver River. PSN

to Portugal, Spain and France in June. It started in Lisbon, Portugal and the last port was in St. Malo, France. Usually, temperatures in the area along the coast can range from 68 to 82 degrees. As luck would have it, I got to travel during a heat wave. We experienced 110 degrees in Bordeaux, France, during a walking tour of the city.

re you caring for a loved one? Do you provide daily assistance to help keep them at home? Are you paying for someone to provide personal care or respite so you can get out and have a break? Do you pay for your loved one to attend adult day service or purchase a lot of incontinence supplies? If so the Beaver County Office on Aging’s Caregiver Support Program may be just what you need. The Caregiver Support Program reimburses eligible caregivers for expenses they incur to care for and keep their

loved ones living at home in the community. Caregivers must provide daily assistance and cannot be paid in any way for their care. The program does not pay a caregiver or provide a job for the caregiver. It is a reimbursement program that enables the caregiver to recoup some of the money they have expended on the care of their loved one. Other benefits of the program include the support of a care manager, access to educational materials, benefits counseling, annual caregiver recognition and educational luncheon, and a free evaluation of safety needs in the home. Eligibility for the program is determined through a needs assessment

and verification of household income. Verification of the individual’s assets and that of their spouse is also required. Based on household income the caregiver may be eligible for reimbursement up to 100 percent of $500 for preapproved services and supplies. Each caregiver also has access to reimbursement for assistive devices or home modifications such as a shower seat or a stair glide. If you are a caregiver and want to access this wonderful program, please contact the Information and Referral department at (724) 847-2262 or (888) 548-2262 and ask for a referral to the Caregiver Support Program. Local company encourages “hope to grow” by combining gardening and caregiver support By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News

A

s a young girl, Moon Township native Lisa Story was always drawn to nature exploring and, as an adult, became an avid flower gardener. Now she’s found a way to combine her love of the natural world with a heart to help others who are caregivers to loved ones. After caregiving her father before he passed away in 2015, Lisa Story realized two things: that others who care for loved ones in the Pittsburgh community need more support and care themselves, and the restorative power of gardening. “I needed to heal my mind, body, and soul after my dad passed, so I planted my first vegetable garden,” shares Lisa, who is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Thanatologist and has worked in hospice care and grief counseling. With a master’s of science in counseling psychology from Chatham University, a certificate in addictions counseling from Waynesburg University, and a certificate in horticultural therapy from the Horticultural Therapy Institute in Denver,

“I couldn’t help but notice the positive changes to my physical, psychological and spiritual stress associated with the loss. My belief in the restorative power of planting in addition to divine intervention through a dream from my late father led me to found Hope Grows in 2010.” She presently serves as executive director. The company’s mission is to inspire hope through nature while empowering caregivers to seek mind-body-soul wellness. “Our staff, network of volunteers, and our board of directors seek to put an end to caregiver death and be the organization that caregivers trust and turn to receive personalized assistance, therapeutic services, and resources at any point in their journey—regardless of their financial means. “Hope Grows’ programs are designed to provide options and solutions for the caregiver,” Lisa explains. “Our staff is certified to provide counseling in both one-on-one or group settings. Our garden serves as a place of respite for caregivers who are dedicating much of their time to support those who need them.”

The Hope Grows garden provides therapeutic respite for caregivers.

Hope Grows focuses its support and services into the following three areas: • Counseling and Support – through mental health counseling, support groups and psycho-education to caregivers and their families. This support encourages caregivers to process their stress in a healthy way and enhances the skills they need to most effectively care for their loved ones. • Therapeutic Respite – therapeutic activities through which caregivers can rest, rejuvenate and focus on self-care, including respite through restorative gardening and connecting with nature.

By participating in the Hope Grows therapeutic model, Lisa says that caregivers can begin to relieve stress, restore energy and gain balance. “We attend to the caregiver’s individual needs, drawing on all three of these focus areas.” For those who have access to a phone and/or the Internet, Hope Grows offers a virtual program, called “Think Caregiver”, which connects caregivers to personalized support and community support across a vast national network. This program can be accessed by calling (412) 369-4673 or hopegrows.net. On this website, caregivers can also sign up for Care Call Check-ins, or calls at regular intervals to check on the caregiver and offer emotional support and resources. Into the future, Lisa has plans to open a respite house so caregivers can break away from their responsibilities on

a temporary basis overnight, if even for a few hours, and participate in counseling and support, as needed. “Whether you find yourself in a caregiver role for the first time, have spent years being a caregiver, or have already lost the person you were caring for, we understand the unique challenges that you face,” Lisa conveys. As our name implies, we strive to plant hope, one seed at a time. All this requires seasons of cultivating and tending to the needs of each caregiver, and that’s our goal.
