Photography and poetry capture beauty of Franciscan Manor residents

F

ranciscan Manor Senior Living and Progressive Home Health, Inc. hosted a special event recently to honor Franciscan Manor residents through photography and poetry therapy. The event, titled “Still Me”, captured photographs of the residents in attendance by Mary White of Mary White Photography. Once the photos were taken, Mary displayed them alongside not-so-recent photos of each resident “so they could see that they may not look like they did years ago, but they are still the same person inside,” she explained. Progressive Home Health’s resident poet, John Conte, conveyed written words in the form of poetry therapy to bring healing and personal growth to the residents, as well. This artistic combo left the residents and their families with a special gift for years to come. BCSN Franciscan Manor Senior Living is located at 71 Darlington Road, Patterson Township. Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors Beaver County Office on Aging

Retail stores slowly close, online shopping increases along with need for computer skills

By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

I

n Beaver County and across the country, we are watching many of our retailers leave the area. They are citing that more people are going online (using smartphones and computers) to shop for multiple purposes. People are searching several Internet sites for good prices. They are looking for a variety of items that are not available locally. Some people prefer not going to the store and enjoy that items are shipped directly to your home. I have not jumped on the online shopping bandwagon. Many years ago, I used to order clothes from catalogs. It was fun to look through the catalog, handwrite my order on an order form, write a check and mail it to the company. In a couple of weeks, I’d receive the package on my doorstep. Eventually, I quit ordering from the catalogs. I was spending too much time going to the post office to return items and requesting a refund. What looked great on the beautiful tall model in the catalog did not look the same on my short frame. Also, clothes would be too tight in the arms, too long in the legs, too tight in the waist, etc., etc.

Some people have told me that they are forced to go online to purchase things they want or need. Certain items are not available in brick-and-mortar stores. Many people are comfortable ordering online and using their credit cards. Some people only use one credit card for online orders. Others use only Visa gift cards or an Amazon gift card to order so if something gets hacked, there is only the remaining amount left on the gift card. Some older adults have told our caseworkers that they have computers, but it’s something that their children set up and said they have to use. They may be using the computer a little bit for email or to play games. Many older adults still do not have computers and do not want to purchase Internet service. Some people tell us that they are fortunate to have family who can help them get items they need online. Others realize that they still are young enough and are going to be forced to use a computer to gain services or items in the future.

Last year, the Beaver County Office on Aging conducted its Four-Year Plan survey to ask the community what older adults will need in the next four years. The new need identified by seniors is “more smartphone and computer skills.” Even those who currently have these devices said that they will need more training in the future since technology changes quickly. We are looking toward offering some technology-related education through our monthly Senior Day program later this year, including information on resources for gaining new skills in our ever-changing world. Beaver County History Tidbits 3 Rochester Borough had many early names, including East Bridgewater, Beaver Point and Fairport before it was named Rochester in 1837. 3 In 1880, R.M. Downie invented a steam drill. In 1882, the Keystone Driller Co. in Beaver Falls was formed to manufacture the product. 3 In 1787, Isaac Melcher (Melchoir) of Philadelphia acquired Logstown in Harmony Township and laid out plans for the town of Montmorin, which never materialized. 3 Rev. William G. Taylor bought the Watercure Sanatorium buildings in present day Monaca in 1865 for his Soldiers’ Orphans School. There was a dormitory, dining room, school, bathhouse, woodshed, carpenter shop and chapel. It burned in 1876. BCSN

Angela’s days of shopping at the local Macy’s Department Store are limited.

Ordering online, however, is not an option for me. I still go to stores to try on clothes so they fit properly. As I get older, comfort is essential, especially with shoes. With my favorite brand of shoes, anything from a 6 ½, 7, 7 wide or 7 ½ may fit. I try to shop mostly in Beaver County, but selection continues to get more limited here. Sometimes, I have to venture to Cranberry Township in Butler County, Robinson Township in Allegheny County and Lancaster County to find a more varied selection of merchandise. Looking for items still is fun for me. You never know what you may find and what bargains may await. Besides, it is an opportunity to get out and walk around.

Surprises for Shut-ins reaches milestone with more than 10,000 deliveries This year was a milestone for the Beaver County Office on Aging’s (BCOA) Surprises for Shut-ins program. The program not only celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2016, but it also exceeded 10,000 deliveries. A total of 470 older adults received a bag of gifts and a friendly visit during the Christmas holiday. A grand total of 10,227 deliveries have been made since the inception of the program in 1987. BCOA would like to thank everyone for their donations of gifts, money, giftwrap and tape. Plus, 56 volunteers spent 211 hours wrapping gifts at Center at the Mall. Caregiver Support Program has money available to reimburse caregivers The Beaver County Office on Aging is looking for new consumers for its Caregiver Support Program. Funding is available to reimburse unpaid caregivers for expenses they incur when they purchase preapproved services, supplies, home modifications and assistive devices. Are you caring for a loved one and privately paying for in home help? Do you purchase a large amount of incontinence supplies? Are you thinking of installing a stair glide or purchasing a lift chair for your loved one so they can remain at home? If you are the primary caregiver, see and assist your loved one daily, receive no type of payment for the care you provide and are using your funds to pay for additional assistance, this could be the program for you. The Caregiver Support Program provides monthly reimbursement, benefits

counseling, access to a library of educational material, a yearly caregiver recognition luncheon and the ongoing support of a care manager. The program does not pay the primary caregiver for their care. It does not provide a job for a family member. Reimbursement cannot be provided when the caregiver hires a relative to assist them. The program reimburses the primary caregiver when they use their funds to purchase additional services and supplies to help them continue in their caregiving role and to keep their loved one at home. Requirements for the program include assessment, care plan development and verification of household income and the consumer and spouse’s current assets. To take advantage of this funding, call the Beaver County Office on Aging at (724) 847-2262 and ask to make a referral for the Caregiver Support Program. BCSN

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will no longer issue vehicle registration stickers The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will no longer issue vehicle registration stickers, and there will be a large cost savings for taxpayers. This is a result of Act 89, which eliminated the requirement for the registration sticker on a license plate as of December 31, 2016. You are not required to remove any current or expired sticker from the license plate.

2 1 c. canned pitted tart cherries 2 1/3 c. plus 3 T. sugar, divided 2 ½ c. all-purpose flour 2 ½ t. baking powder 2 1 T. cold butter 2 ¼ c. 2% milk In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring cherries and 1/3 cup sugar to a boil. Remove from heat; set aside. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder and remaining sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in milk until moistened. Spread into a greased 3-cup baking dish; pour cherries over the top. Bake at 370 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until bubbly and edges are golden brown. Serve warm. BCSN

Senior center menus

Eliminating the stickers will save taxpayers more than $3 million a year—$1.1 million for the stickers and an additional $2 million in mailing costs. The savings will benefit the Motor License Fund, which invests in Pennsylvania’s infrastructure by repairing roadways and maintaining roads and bridges. Law enforcement will know if a vehicle is registered by using electronic access to PennDOT’s database from their patrol cars. Also, some use license plate reader technology to validate registrations. PennDOT has notified other states and jurisdictions about the elimination of the registration stickers. Law enforcement in the United States and Canada has electronic access to PennDOT’s database to check registration status. Vehicle owners can still renew their registration by mail. In addition, registration can be renewed online from home or a mobile device, printing and signing their permanent registration credential. With the enhancement to the online registration process, customers will no longer print a temporary registration nor will they need to wait for delivery of permanent documents by mail. BCSN
