Gospel music is featured at Circle of Friends Light-Up Night.
Circle of Friends hosts Gospel Light-Up Night Circle of Friends Beaver Falls hosted a beautiful Gospel Light-Up Night on November 30, with the focus of the event being on the birth of Jesus. A full-size nativity set of cardboard and fabric that was handmade by Circle of Friends owner Donna Murphy was on display, and the halls were decorated with stars and lights. The evening began with a delicious dinner of stuffed
chicken breasts, mashed potatoes, seasoned corn and a variety of cakes for dessert. Afterwards, the local vocal quartet Sons of Thunder led everyone in singing “Silent Night”, as the lights were dimmed and the nativity scene was illuminated. After the official lighting of the nativity, the nearly 200 guests were treated to performances of gospel Christmas music by Sons of
Thunder and three local choirs: the Lincoln Park Center for the Performing Arts male choir, the choir from Church in the Round from Aliquippa, and the choir from Christian Lighthouse Ministries of Aliquippa. A good night was had by all in attendance.

Area high school students join King Beaver residents in holiday sing-along By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News For 10 years now, Sigbert Brauch of Beaver has been spreading Christmas joy at King Beaver Apartments in Beaver Falls by bringing students from Beaver Area Senior High School to perform for the residents. On December 18, about 50 residents gathered in the community room to join in a sing-along of popular carols and sacred songs. The idea to host a special evening of song for the residents originated when Sigbert was a German language teacher at Beaver Area High School. “My son Jon, who was in high school at that time, had a newspaper route and because King Beaver Apartments was part of his route, we became acquainted with the people there,” Sigbert explains. “Some of them were also members of my church, Grace Evangelical Lutheran in Rochester.” Word had gotten around that Sigbert had been teaching his students classic holiday tunes in German. “I made it a practice as part of my German course to teach through song, so around the holidays, we’d sing German Christmas songs,” he says. “Gradually, I invited other language teachers to join and it just multiplied. Then, members of the high school

This year, a dozen students chimed into the festivities, along with Sigbert and French teacher Melanie Barker, who offered a poignant meditation on the significance of the word “manger”, the place where Baby Jesus was laid. The singers were accompanied on piano by Henry Doktorski, music director for Grace Lutheran Church. As a special treat, members of the Grace Lutheran handbell ensemble (familiarly known as
Sigbert is now retired after 31 years as a language teacher—he was also a soccer coach for 25 years, as well as an advisor for the high school ski club, German club and chess club—but he still finds time to interact with the students through singing. He is also a tenor in the Grace Lutheran Church choir. And as long as the residents of King Beaver will have him, he plans to continue doing his part to keep the spirit of Christmas alive through the beauty of language and song. BCSN

Exposure to cold can cause injury or serious illness, such as frostbite or hypothermia. Keep the following in mind: Dress appropriately before going outdoors. Dress in layers so you can adjust to changing conditions. Wear a hat; most of your body heat is lost through your head. Choose mittens, as they provide more warmth than gloves. Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow. Get out of wet clothes immediately and warm up your core body temperature with a blanket and warm fluids.

Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors Beaver County Office on Aging
Changes in a relative or friend may be a sign of Alzheimer’s disease After visiting with relatives over the recent holidays, you may have some concerns about their physical and cognitive health. Although these types of changes can naturally occur with age, serious memory problems are not a part of normal aging. Recognizing the difference between normal aging and more serious problems can help you to identify when it may be time for a relative to see a doctor.
• New problems with words in speaking or writing
The Alzheimer’s Association had an increase in calls to its 24-hour helpline during the holiday season, especially from those who visited friends and family that they may not see as frequently during the year. The helpline is available to anyone who has a question or doubt about the state of an aging family member or friend.
• Confusion with time or place
If you notice any of these signs in a relative or friend, schedule an appointment with their doctor. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is an important step in getting appropriate treatment, care and support services. For more information, visit www.alz.org or call the helpline at (800) 272-3900.

Turn your health “wish list” into an action-oriented “to do” list this year Take a walk each day (or do some armchair exercises) to start accumulating your 30 minutes of daily activity.
By Judy Dodd, MS, RD, LDN Giant Eagle Community Relations Corporate Nutritionist For Beaver County Senior News
S
o it’s time for New Year’s good intentions. It’s also likely that both our written and unwritten resolutions are more of a “wish list” than a “to do” list! Since you probably have at least one friend or family member who is also in “wish” rather than “action” mode, work together to make 2013 a year for action. Make your intentions and resolutions more realistic by incorporating these tips.
At the next meal, aim for one-quarter of your plate to be the protein portion (meat, fish, chicken or turkey), one-quarter a grain dish like pasta, and the other half vegetables and fruit. Color is the key and we are talking an eight- or 10-inch plate. Doing this even once a day is a step toward getting control of your portion sizes. Remember to have the nutrient-rich three servings of low-fat dairy group foods each day (milk, cheese, yogurt or soy, rice or almond milk). Use the chart-on-the refrigerator method to keep track of your whole grains for the bounty of nutrients
removed when grains are refined. Use the chart to track your goal for activity, too. Clean out the grazing foods or at least move them to the top shelves. Candy, cookies, chips, nuts and even pretzels should be out of sight to give you the opportunity to think before you reach! While you are at it, check out your car, desk or work area and clean out all munchies that are high in fat, calories and sodium. Stock up on “crunchies” that have less calories (this takes planning but is worth the effort!) Clean and cut celery, carrots, bell peppers, sugar snap peas; add a low-fat dip or salsa. Try some baked chips, small pretzels (wholegrain or without salt), and small, whole-grain crackers or snack bars.
Invest in an air popper or microwave popcorn maker. This can save calories and makes room for butter-flavored spray, or even some of the real thing. Aim for lower-calorie drinks such as flavored waters, diet beverages, andtea with wedges of fresh lemon, lime or oranges. Write down what you eat (and approximate amounts). Studies show that writing it down before you eat it may actually stop you from mindless eating. Check for a tracker at www.choosemyplate.gov/. Start small but start now with your 2013 resolutions. The best “to do” list one that fixes problems that you can tackle in a realistic way. Wishing you a healthy new year! BCSN
