Butler seniors dine, drum and indulge their “sweet tooth” at luncheon Nearly 150 seniors from throughout Butler County came together on May 19 to dine, drum and enjoy the day. The event, held at Tanglewood Center in Lyndora, was in celebration of Older Americans Month. All Butler County adults ages 60 and older were invited to participate.
Attendees were treated to a delicious lunch of cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, peas with pearl onions, and peach pie, catered by The Nutrition Group in Gibsonia. After lunch, master drummer and famed local musician Jim Donovan got everyone playing upbeat music
with jembe drums, rattles, shakers and other small instruments. He also gave a fun, informative presentation on the health benefits of drumming.

Butler seniors dine, drum and indulge their “sweet tooth” at luncheon “The guests had never seen anything like that candy table, and they loved it,” says Pam Malachin, regional director of The Nutrition Group. “In fact, it’s already been requested as something to include in future gatherings.”
Continued from page 1 Another special treat this year was a candy buffet, which was set up mid-afternoon for a sweet snack. The display of candies included all the favorites: M&Ms, jelly beans, licorice, Lifesavers, Swedish fish, lollypops, peppermints, peanut butter cups, bite-size candy bars and more.
The event also included more than 75 door prizes, gift cards and raffle baskets. Proceeds from the baskets benefitted Butler County senior centers. BCSN

“We are really excited about this new program, especially since performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness are the single most important activity that adults can do to stay active and reduce their chances of falling,” say Brittany Buzzelli, Butler AoA’s health and wellness coordinator. “The entire curriculum of activities in the SAIL program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly.”
Slippery Rock Senior Center, 52 Branchton Rd., Slippery Rock; Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
all, the classes are fun and a great way to meet other seniors and make new friends. BCSN
All SAIL exercises can be done either standing or sitting, and exercises are adaptable for all levels of physical ability. (The program can accommodate those with a mild level of mobility difficulty, such as occasional cane users). The classes, taught by qualified senior fitness instructors, are specifically designed to help maintain and improve balance and mobility. Perhaps best of July 2017 • Butler County Senior News

Heritage Elder Law & Estate Planning, LLC In our law practice, one of the most common questions is “Can I gift $14,000 to each of my children without a problem?” It is true that this gift would not result in any taxes, but the more important consideration is the impact of the gift on Nursing Home Medicaid.

While it is true that the Federal gift tax laws allow a person to give away $14,000 per year to anyone, Medicaid law does not. Medicaid has its own rules, and they do
not coordinate with tax law. The government’s left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. If a person gives away $14,000, and becomes sick and needs Nursing Home Medicaid (Medical Assistance) within 5 years of the gift, the Medicaid rules will disqualify him for a length of time called a penalty period. The length of the penalty period depends on the amount of the gift. What this means is that if you give away your assets and then need the nursing home in the next 5 years, you may not be able to pay the nursing home. In Pennsylvania, this can even lead to adult children being sued by the nursing home under the Filial Support Law. This is risky business. If the cost of long-term care is a concern in your family, you should know that there are alternatives to outright gifting. It is possible to protect assets from long term care costs with a comprehensive estate plan. Estate planning is complicated and readers are urged to seek legal advice before taking action. To find out more, consider attending a FREE educational workshop presented by Heritage Elder Law & Estate Planning, LLC. Call (724) 841-0004 or visit our website at HeritageElderLaw.com for Workshop dates, times, locations or to RSVP.
