Centenarians enjoy Golden Glamour photo sessions Continued from page 1 April 28. Emily McDaniel celebrated her 101st birthday on May 2. “We dress them up and add a few accessories to finish the look,” says neighborhood coordinator and activities director Debbie Graham. “These ladies wowed our cameras. They are not the typical image that you think of for someone over 100 years old. They are gorgeous.” While the women would not reveal their beauty secrets, modestly saying it is in the genes, they did say that they continue to live their lives to the fullest. Grace enjoys taking daily walks, socializing with friends, doing puzzles and playing bingo. Emily watches TV, prays every day, attends parties and enjoys visiting with her family. APPRISE recognized by Pennsylvania Department of Aging for excellent service
By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News
T
he Beaver County Office on Aging APPRISE health insurance counseling staff and volunteers work really hard, and they just got recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging for excellence in serving clients. Year round, I hear them on the telephone and see them meeting in our office with many people on the complexities of understanding Medicare and other insurances to provide some coverage for what Medicare does not cover. I just got to experience their expertise first hand as a close relative of mine will be going on Medicare this summer. He asked me to sit in with him during his appointments with our APPRISE coordinator Joanne McDermitt. She spent ample time explaining the different parts of Medicare and the premium for Medicare Part B. She then went on to describe different options. One option was to add a Medigap plan where you can go to any
There is still more. People get lots of choices today. With the Medigap, there are Plans A through N, and there are many Part D prescription plans to consider. With the HMO/ PPO, there are at least nine plans to select. Our APPRISE counselors can then use various computer websites to print information to compare costs of all these different plans and what copayments may be. These programs also can tell you if you may be in the “doughnut hole,” or coverage gap, for prescriptions. My relative will be in this situation. He had Joanne run copies of price comparisons for two Medigap plans, two prescription Part D plans, one HMO and one PPO. She also had run price comparisons for two different local pharmacies. She even suggested that he check prices with two warehouse club pharmacies to compare even further. I told my relative that he is going to need to get tablet paper out at home to tabulate all the premiums and possible copayments to help him to figure out what plan to purchase.
I later got a call from my relative. He asked if I would come over to help him with all the documents, trying to remember all the details. He, his wife and I sat down and for an hour and a half did all the tabulations. We found one plan that would save him $15 a month more than the other plans. He still needs to check with the pharmacy warehouse clubs to see if there could be any more price savings by using their pharmacies. “What do people do who don’t have anyone locally to help them sort out all of this?” my relative asked me. I said that we are fortunate to have the APPRISE program. They will not make your final decision, but they can provide you a lot of information to help you make a good decision. BCSN

hospital or doctor and a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription plan. This would result in three premium payments, with three insurance cards to show for medical care or to use the pharmacy. Another option was for a Medicare HMO or PPO. There would be two premium payments, but just one insurance card for medical care or the pharmacy. My relative needs to be able to go to certain hospitals, so Joanne was able to tell him which HMO/PPOs participate with those hospitals.

T
he Beaver County Office on Aging APPRISE program has been honored again for exemplary service by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging. The program is the recipient of the 2018 Client Service Award. The APPRISE team makes every attempt to accommodate all requests for appointments and also offers Saturday appointments at our senior center to be available for Baby Boomers who are still employed, caregivers who are busy during the week and also for beneficiaries who may want their children to be with them during the session. Team members are a presence at countless health fairs, senior expos, church and community events and legislative sponsored events.
The team arranges for the special needs of the beneficiaries, such as the provision of interpreters and making accommodations for service animals. They also function as facilitators in regional Community Health Choices (CHC) public meetings and continue to provide information to concerned beneficiaries regarding the differences between Medicare, Medicaid and LongTerm Services and Supports (LTSS). Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors A moment in time: WBVP celebrates 70 years of community radio WBVP was founded and began broadcasting on May 25, 1948, by three men from Pittsburgh: Frank Smith, Thomas Price and Charles Onderka. Smith and Price gave up careers at WWSW in Pittsburgh, and Onderka left his position in the accounting department at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They pooled together all their money and bought property in Pulaski Township to build a transmitter and tower. Then they acquired an office building in Beaver Falls and filled it with broadcasting and office equipment to become Beaver County’s first radio station. The threesome were successful in gaining approval for a new allocation from the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast at 1230 kilohertz with a transmitting power of 250 watts from an antenna height of 150 feet.

Charles Harmon “Chuck” Wilson was hired as part of the original staff, and around 6 p.m. on May 25, 1948 in “Studio A” on the third floor at 1216 Seventh Avenue in Beaver Falls, he greeted listeners when WBVP officially signed on the air. Thus began a 70-year tradition of community radio that continues to this day. Over the years, the company has grown to better serve Beaver County. In 1975, approval to broadcast from a new 500foot tower and a power increase to 1,000 watts meant a greatly enhanced coverage area. The current office building at 1316 Seventh Avenue in Beaver Falls was purchased in 1978, and staff relocated there a few years later after extensive renovations.

The Ambridge radio station, WMBA, was acquired in 2000, providing additional service to the southern parts of Beaver County. It became the other half of the duo of radio stations that are now commonly known as “Beaver County Radio.” They feature a robust online media outlet of the same name that was launched in 2015. In 2018, the stations received approval from the F.C.C. to construct a new FM translator radio station to simulcast WBVP programming at 99.3 megahertz. The original slogan and acronym for WBVP of “We Boost Valley Progress” is as true today as it was in 1948. BCSN
