Keen-Agers of Portersville portray famous “couples through the ages” at anniversary luncheon In celebration of its 35th anniversary, the KeenAgers of Portersville took “A Lighthearted Look at Couples Through the Ages” at its annual variety show luncheon in April. Close to 100 older adults came out to socialize and enjoy a delicious hot meal at the event. The entertainment program featured skits by Keen-Agers members who

portrayed famous couples, starting with Adam and Eve, as well as other Biblical notables Abraham and Sarah, King David and Bathsheba, and Sampson and Delilah from the Old Testament, then Aquilla and Priscilla from the New Testament. Historic couple Captain John Smith and Pocahontas was also on the roster. More modern duos included Fred Astaire and

Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and Roy Roger and Dale Evans. The Keen-Agers are hosting a picnic on June 25 that will feature a boat ride on Lake Arthur. Anyone is welcome to join. The group currently has about 200 members and is open to anyone age 60

Performing on hammered dulcimer, button accordion, harmonica and banjo, Thomas Jolin shares Lincoln and Liberty, Battle Cry of Freedom, No More Auction Block and more. He also discusses the origins of the songs and the instruments. The trauma of the Civil War produced a tremendous amount of music as the nation mourned and sought relief from the death of 600,000 Americans. Songs about soldiers’ lives, domestic scenes, minstrel traditions and the fight to end slavery give us insight into what it was really like to live during that time.

“The Old Stone House sounds like my type of venue to play. I’m grateful,” noted Jolin, “It’s a great setting for this type of performance.”

Healthy Steps for Older Adults program teaches seniors how to reduce falls and stay healthy By Gina Mazza For Butler County Senior News

B

utler County residents Allison, 75, and her husband, Robert, 78, attended a free educational program at their local senior center last year that has made all the difference in motivating them to avoid falls and remain active. “The Healthy Steps for Older Adults program was just the incentive we needed to exercise more and reevaluate some things at home to reduce our risk of potentially falling,” Allison says. “It covered everything we might need to know about strategies for healthy living and fall prevention—not just now, but down the road.”

In its third year, Healthy Steps for Older Adults (HSOA) is growing in popularity, in part because past attendees like Allison and Robert have been spreading the word about the benefits they’ve received from it. “Friends of ours who attended the program have told us that they’ve followed through and done things like install grab bars and indoor/outdoor lighting to make their home safer, or changed the style of their shoes to help prevent falls,” Robert shares. HSOA was developed in 2005 through a partnership between the Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) and the University of California at Berkeley. In Butler County, PDA subcontracts with the Butler County Area Agency on Aging (BCAoA), which works with senior center provider agencies to deliver HSOA programs throughout the county. The award-winning statewide program offers resources, tips and June 2014 • Butler County Senior News

Brittany Buzzelli leads Conrad Weser, Beth Emmett and Becky Seyler in stretching exercises. demonstrations on how to create a safer home, an awareness of movements to prevent falls that can lead to serious medical problems, simple easy balancing and strength building exercises, and other techniques that can keep seniors ages 50 and older “more fit and fine” for years to come. The main goals of the program are to: * assess an individual’s risk of falling. * reduce the risk of falling. * learn new exercises. * build strength, especially in the lower body. * increase flexibility to improve movement. * improve overall balance. * provide a follow-up assessment at the end of the program.

“Falling is a very serious problem, which is why these workshops are so vital,” says Brittany Buzzelli, community liaison with the Butler County Area Agency on Aging. Indeed, more than one-third of US adults ages 65 and older suffer a fall each year, and it’s the leading cause of injury deaths among seniors, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationwide, the cost of fall injuries is expected to reach $67.7 billion by 2020, according to the CDC. Here in Pennsylvania, falls are a leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations. “The good news is that since HSOA was started in 2007, 32,000 Pennsylvanians have completed the program,” Brittany adds. “But there are approximately 4.5 million Pennsylvanians over the age of 50 so the program has lots of room to grow.”

Butler County Area Agency on Aging

The program consists of two twohour workshops: one on fall prevention and the other on staying active. Participants learn about risk indicators, including alcohol and tobacco use, medications, depression and stress, as well as shopping, cooking and eating habits. Seniors are also encouraged seniors to talk to their doctors about problems such as dizziness, not being as steady on their feet and osteoporosis, which increases the chance of broken bones resulting from a fall. Other topics include bathroom and kitchen safety, safety on stairways, taking “wiggle breaks”, foot care and foot wear, balance basics, doing things safely and what to do if you have a fall. Lunch is provided on the first day, and each participant receives a comprehensive 64-page guide to take home at the end of the second day. “Healthy Steps has made me more aware of simple things like getting up and down from chairs, making sure I turn the lights on when getting out of bed, making sure extension cords are out of the way and that the stairwells are clear,” says another program participant. They demonstrate all of this in the workshop. It’s a good program; I recommend that every senior learn these things.” BCSN HSOA is free and open to first-time Butler County participants ages 50 and older. Lunch is provided. Advance registration is required. For a list of upcoming times and locations for the program, call the Butler County Area Agency on Aging at (724) 282-3008 or inquire at your local senior center.
