I was intrigued yet skeptical about the product so I decided to attend an open house in February to get more information and see how the product is made. After getting a firsthand look at production and hearing about all the research and greenhouse trials that had taken place, I wanted to see for myself if the product really worked. So, I bought a bag and did some experimenting of my own.

ave you ever watched the popular television show “Shark Tank?” It’s a reality show where entrepreneurs make a sales pitch to a panel of investors that are called “sharks.” The sharks decide whether they want to be investors in the entrepreneur’s product or service to help them establish a promising business.

In 2015, Shark Tank judge and Pittsburgh area native Mark Cuban decided to invest in an Ambridge company called PittMoss, an alternative to peat moss that’s made with organic, natural material and recycled newspapers. There are several types of the product: one to use as a soil amendment, and the other as a potting mix with added fertilizer. It weighs less than typical potting soil and it holds water for longer periods of time, requiring less watering.

After filling a pot with the PittMoss potting mix, adding lettuce seed and water, I found out quickly that it is true when they said it holds water really well—so well that I had to drain the water. No water was needed until about five days later but only a little water was needed. About a week later, to my surprise, my lettuce seed had sprouted! As any experienced gardener knows, you need to have patience when developing your garden. It takes a good amount of time for fruits and vegetables to grow and be ready for harvesting. Beaver County farmers are currently working on their crops to grow fruits and vegetables that can be purchased using the Senior Farmers Market vouchers at the area farmer’s markets. (See the cover story in this month’s Senior News for details and where to get the vouchers.) The majority of fruits and vegetables are harvested from mid-June through fall. Frequenting the local farmer’s markets is a great way to shop local, eat a healthy diet using fresh foods and try out new recipes. I will be looking forward to making a salad with fresh veggies and using my lettuce grown with the help of PittMoss and a little love! BCSN

Cashless tolling begins on I-376 Beaver Valley Expressway The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission implemented “cashless tolling” last month on Toll 376, the I-376 Beaver Valley Expressway in Beaver and Lawrence counties. The new system is used only in one other location while the turnpike commission evaluates the effectiveness. Motorists will no longer need to stop and drop change into a basket. Tolls are assessed electronically as vehicles travel at the posted speed through all lanes of the existing toll plazas. High-speed cameras mounted at the tollbooths will take a picture of the vehicle’s license plate for vehicles that do not have EZPass. Customers without E-ZPass will be sent an invoice with the turnpike toll amount to the address of the registered owner of the vehicle and will be given 20 days to pay the invoice. Motorists can sign up for E-ZPass to receive a discounted rate. Current E-Z pass customers will have their toll deducted from their pre-paid accounts, as usual. The first “cashless tolling” opened in January of 2016 near the turnpike bridge over the Delaware River in Bucks County. The Beaver Valley Expressway was selected as the second test site since it is located in a rural area, off the mainline turnpike, but close to the state line to provide a mix of out-of-state and in-state users. It will impact fewer customers due to lower average daily traffic. Access to and from the expressway occurs west of the beginning/end of the turnpike’s ticket-based system in Cranberry. If drivers need to continue to the main section of the turnpike, they will need to get a ticket at the Warrendale toll booth if they do not have E-ZPass. Beaver County history tidbits 2 Fort McIntosh was built on a plateau above the Ohio River at a town we know now as Beaver by General Lachlan McIntosh during the American Revolution in 1778. This was done to protect the western frontier from possible attacks by the British and from raids by their Native American allies. 2 Vito “Babe” Parilli was born in 1930 and raised in Rochester. The 1948 Rochester High School graduate played football at the University of Kentucky under Coach Bear Bryant. The All American played in the 1951 Sugar Bowl and the 1952 Cotton Bowl. He had quite a pro football career playing for the Green Bay Packers, Ottawa Rough Riders, Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders and Boston Patriots. He was the backup quarterback to Beaver Falls native Joe Namath with the New York Jets in 1968 and 1969 when the Jets were the Super Bowl III champion. He coached with different pro teams, including serving as quarterback coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1970s. 2 There is currently a lot of construction happening on Ohio River Boulevard, Route 65 from Freedom through Ambridge.
