more so much

than just a holiday

Parents Not Included

In so many ways, our holidays are a very special kind of fun. For a start, they’re adventures that are just for children. They get to try amazing activities in the great outdoors. Laugh with new friends and old.

Spread their wings a little and gain a whole lot of confidence. Challenge themselves. And yes, grow up a bit as well. For most it’s their first time staying away from home and that makes it special too. In fact, it’s amazing what children achieve when they’re enjoying themselves. We understand that taking that first step as a parent can seem daunting but we believe the rewards are worth it. That’s why we believe ‘adventure matters’ and why we’d love you and your children more than ever to join the adventure in 2014.

See it, hear it, explore for yourself. The best way to understand what makes us special is to come and visit one of centres for yourself. Because that’s asking a lot, we’ve created this brochure, our website and a selection of great videos to bring what we do to life. To check out our videos, head to our website now or give us a call and we’ll send you a free DVD.

ROOTS OUR

RUN DEEP

In a class of our own

We think it’s important you know who we are and what we’re all about. We’ve been pioneers of children’s adventure for almost 60 years and we set the standards in what we do. We work with thousands of schools, groups, parents and children. In fact, a whopping 300,000 children now stay at PGL centres every year and it’s growing all the time. We always put safety at the heart of everything we do. We believe in getting out in the great outdoors in small groups, learning from new experiences and having fun. We believe in children because we’re parents too and because we understand just how much adventure matters. These deeply held values have stayed with us since we were founded by Peter Gordon Lawrence in 1957 and we don’t intend to change them now. These are just some of the reasons we stand apart from the crowd and believe we offer something very special. We hope you agree and we invite you to join us.

Love to learn more, too little time? There’s always a reason to delay, hold back or put things off in our busy lives. Everything competes strongly for our attention. That’s why we’ve designed our brochure to make it fun and easy to find out everything you need as you browse through or dip in when you can. You can also flip straight to our legendary Parent Guide on page 80 which is packed with all the essential details.

Delia would be

proud Our not so secret recipe

Describing what our holidays consist of isn’t simple. We don’t have a clever buzzword to describe it in a nutshell. That’s because our recipe creates completely unique experiences for every child, every time. We’ve been perfecting it for a long time now and like most good things it’s not so secret really. It’s all about the kind of things that, as parents, we know count for so much – quality, common sense, experience and care. It works so well because it brings lots of different elements together in a special way.

The big 5 ingredients!

✔ We create high quality, safe, exciting adventure centres, dedicated purely to children.

✔ We employ and train an engaged, motivated and caring team of staff.

✔ We throw in top quality equipment, specialist outdoor activity instructors, all food and accommodation and much more.

✔ We offer exciting and inventive holidays, with never a dull moment from dawn ‘til dusk.

✔ We include almost everything you need in the price. We believe it’s a winning formula, offering terrific outcomes for children and great quality, reassurance and value for parents.

People always like to skip ahead... We do too! So if you’re already itching to dive in deeper, feel free to jump straight into our holidays section on pages 12-51. You’ll find almost 30 different holidays to choose from!

THE Adventure

Starts here

So much more to discover Read all about it!

We really hope we’ve given you a taste of who we are, what we do and why it could be so great for your children too. The rest of our brochure is full of adventure and fun but is also designed to make choosing a PGL holiday for your children as easy as possible.

✔ The next section is packed full of almost 30 different

holidays, for you and your children to read about together. They are clearly marked with the suitable age groups and give you all the key facts about each holiday and where they are available.

✔ After that you’ll find a section with the lowdown on each of our amazing adventure centres.

✔ Finally, the back section is our Parent Guide, with in-depth information put together based on feedback from parents, past and present.

Chat it through... Our Holiday Consultants are second to none. Most are parents too and know our centres and holidays well, so are best placed to answer your questions. We’re not an impersonal, ‘scripted’ call-centre and won’t be on a clock to end your call and move on. You can call us on 0844 371 2424.

Go digital! We’re open 24/7 at www.pgl.co.uk. You’ll find everything that’s in this brochure and more, including great interactive centre maps, videos, and the latest offers and availability, as well as the ability to book online. We also tweet, post and share thoughts on Twitter and Facebook at the addresses below: www.twitter.com/pglholidays www.facebook.com/pglholidays

MultiHoliActi vity days The original – and still the best!

Our Multi Activity holidays give your children the chance to discover what they enjoy and be challenged and excited all day, every day. With over 50 activities on land and water to try and so many different centres to choose from, it’s easy to see why Multi Activity is our most popular holiday by far!

Made to measure. With 7, 4, 3 night and other durations to choose from, Multi Activity comes in a shape and size to suit every child. We even have special ‘Introductory Adventures’ from only £99 and birthday parties from £16 per child.

Social networking... Our holidays are all about getting children together in small groups to socialise, learn from one another and share the adventure. Meeting different children in a fun and stimulating group environment is key to what we do. It’s why we’ve developed our age groupings to create good group dynamics but also be flexible enough to adapt when it makes sense. We divide our holidays into three main age groups in the UK (see adjacent page) but allow for the youngest and/or older in each group to overlap adjacent age groups so you can choose which will best suit your children. Whichever option you choose and whichever centre you pick, with Multi Activity as your choice, you and your child will enjoy the best of all worlds.

Active minds, full of energy

This is our busiest age group, with the widest choice of holidays. Our Specialist holidays are also a big hit and 10-13’s have an insatiable thirst for trying new things. Our Groupies encourage more self-reliance but with plenty of support and guidance too. In France we include nine year olds in this group too.

No 1need to be nervous 3-16 10-13

7-10

We keep an extra eye on our youngest guests and find they are usually the most reluctant to go home by the end of their holiday! Our Groupies maximise the fun and pack their holiday with lots of activities, so they are kept occupied and feel at home quickly. We’ve also introduced a diary specifically for our younger guests and their Groupie to fill out during their stay to give parents a real insight into their child’s holiday.

13-16 10-13

7-10

A more grown up approach

We have a more inventive approach to our holidays for teenagers. Groupies allow more freedom but know where to draw the boundaries too. We also include more advanced holidays – like learning to drive a car, skiing in Austria and plenty of other adrenaline packed adventures. In France and Austria we also include 17 year olds in this group.

SpeciHoliadliaysst Dare to be different

Children push boundaries – they’re supposed to. We’ve spent years creating pioneering children’s adventure holidays so we’re more aware of this than most and it’s our job to keep up! That’s why we offer an amazing array of holidays that offer so much – a fresh challenge, a new hobby, learning new skills, foreign travel and more. Something that’s a step up from the norm. That’s why we call them ‘Specialist’ and we’ve got 26 to choose from in the UK and France. Each is as action packed as our famous Multi Activity holidays and most include six half days of multi-activities too. They also cost less than you might think – from only £10* more per child than a comparable seven night Multi Activity holiday*.

Find your flavour... Experience has led us to develop our holidays around four different ‘themes’ that help parents and children find those that best fit their interests and personalities – whether they’re into more action, want to learn a new skill, get creative or travel further afield.

Extra, extra! Many of our Specialist Holidays include something extra – T-shirts, recipe booklets, DVD’s, learning diaries, rosettes, trophies or prizes. A nice memento, hard earned badge of honour or a guidebook for future reference – just another reason we call them ‘special’. *See page 99 for more information.

13-16 10-13

7-10

Six half days of watersports + Six half days of multi activity

What’s it all about?

If you get a kick from fun on the water, then Wet & Wild will float your boat! The Isle of Wight is a mecca for watersports and here you’ll try waterskiing, wakeboarding, power boating, knee boarding, sailing, banana boats, kayaking and canoeing.

Can I do other activities as well?

Yes – every day you’ll also enjoy half a day of dry land activities from our brilliant multi activity programme, plus different entertainment every evening. So you can pack in loads of other new experiences too!

What will I learn?

Wakeboarding, like snowboarding on water, is one cool way to take to the water. Then try waterskiing – with two skis to control, you’ll start on a training bar alongside the boat, but will soon progress to a long line. For powerboating, we have boats with engine sizes from 50–90bhp; plus we have Wave Slayer inflatables to tow you behind! Weather permitting; you’ll also spend half a day sailing to Cowes, home of British yachting.

Do I need any experience?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a dab hand at watersports or a complete beginner. If you’re looking for excitement and are water confident, then this is your holiday!

Do I need any specialist equipment? No, we provide everything from wetsuits to lifejackets, plus personal tuition from our fully trained instructors. Just be ready to get very wet!

Lord Charles Hunt collected many treasures during his lifetime and recorded them all in great detail in his diary. Mysteriously, when he died, his most prized and valuable treasure, the Pharaoh’s Pyramid Puzzle, could not be found and is still missing today.

Why do we need to find the pyramid?

Mysterious inscriptions found in the Pharaoh’s tomb told of magical forces locked deep within the Pyramid Puzzle. Beware, because if the puzzle ever falls into the hands of the followers of Ghoulah, the inscriptions warn of impending doom! In order to prevent this, pieces of the Pyramid have been scattered around the Boreatton Park Estate where they have lain hidden for nearly 150 years. However, the inscriptions warned that after 150 years the followers of Ghoulah would return to look for the Pyramid. It must not be allowed to fall into their hands, which is where you come in...

What will we have to do?

We can’t reveal the location of the clues as the followers may get to them before you, so you will have to be ready for anything. You will need to use the zip wire to escape; canoe across the crocodile infested waters of Boreatton Lake; abseil down the tower to reach a clue, as well as many other challenges. You will also prove your skills as an intrepid explorer by spending a day at Alton Towers. Come on this holiday if you are bold, brave and ready for a few surprises!

Loved by children

Our centres aren’t quite like a hotel, a boarding school or even a youth hostel. In fact, they’re in a class of their own. We’re as proud of our centres as we are of our staff and activities and we invest constantly to ensure that every area meets your expectations. They all have their different features but they have one thing in common... They’ve all been designed with children in mind. They’re filled with purpose-built activities and equipment including climbing towers, giant swings and motorsports tracks. They have weather resistant indoor and outdoor spaces. Some are small and homely; others are much bigger with acres of outdoor space. Our biggest has 240 acres! Almost all have lakes and woodland, others have rivers, beaches or other unique features. In fact, they’re built just for adventure.

Find the perfect fit. You can explore our centres through the next section of this brochure, where you’ll find a rundown of the different accommodation, facilities, holidays and activities available at each one. It’s not always easy to appreciate everything without seeing it for yourself so we’ve also created some great interactive maps on our website which you can explore for yourself through images and video clips.

If that’s not enough, adrenaline junkies can test their nerves (and stomach!) on the awesome rides at Thorpe Park (additional supplement) see page 89 for more information.

Set in 48 acres of woodland on the banks of Wootton Creek, and with log cabin style accommodation, it would be easy to confuse Little Canada with the country from which it draws inspiration. Locations don’t come much Exeter better than this and we also have private access direct to the water from our seafront. There are loads of different activities to try on land and on the Plymouth water or if you really want to make the best of this location then why not try our Wet & Wild holiday, newly developed to include 10-13’s! What’s the accommodation like?

Many of our log cabins have recently been updated and refurbished. Most rooms sleep 4-6 and have their own bathroom. The cabins are grouped together in small villages. 7-10s usually stay in our cosy Woodland House, situated in the grounds with en-suite rooms.

What facilities are there?

We have a fantastic range of activities including high and low ropes courses, abseiling towers, an archery range, giant swing and our very own creek for dragon boating and other watersports. We also use the beach, just a short walk away, for canoeing, kayaking and many of the activities on the Wet & Wild holiday. There are also two 10m climbing and abseiling walls, an indoor swimming pool, sports hall, tunnel trail and the mysterious matrix!

What’s it like?

It’s a fantastic forested site by the River Tay, at the heart of Perthshire’s ‘Big Tree Country’. As well as having all the usual exciting PGL multi activities this is our only centre with the ‘Sequoia Scramble’ (a vertical challenge suspended between two massive Sequoia trees). There is also a cat walk, which will test your balance high above the ground and in 2010; Dalguise had a huge new double zip wire built. The wildlife in this unspoilt area is also incredible and if you are lucky you may see the elusive red squirrel or even leaping salmon.

BEING A PAREnt is an adventure too!

Any parent wants their children to explore, have fun and discover more about themselves. At the same time we all have fears and want to protect – that’s only natural, it’s in our job description. We know it’s a tough line to walk but it’s why we’ve worked so hard since 1957 to get it right for the thousands of children and parents who holiday and book with us every year. Our holidays are exciting, full of fun, shared with new friends and enjoyed with laughter but they are also challenging, confidence building and learning experiences. They offer real, valuable (often life-changing) outdoor adventures, away from home and with other children but most importantly, in safe and hugely stimulating environments. We think that’s what childhood should be all about and what gets the balance right for everyone involved. PGL is a very special partnership between you, your children and us. Our in-depth Parent Guide is just another example of the lengths we go to to make this partnership a strong one. We are constantly grateful for all the suggestions, tips and recommendations we get from so many PGL parents and their children and always try to capture all the important information that matters most, here. We appreciate there’s always lots to consider when you’re a parent and we hope you find it helpful. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon.

the uk’s leading provider of children’s holidays Established in 1957, we are the UK’s leading children’s adventure holiday company. Our expertise, safe environments and unrivalled pastoral care mean we are trusted and respected by schools and families nationwide. Our beginnings Back in 1957, Peter Gordon Lawrence bought a folding canvas canoe and set off down the Danube. He loved this experience so much he wanted to share it. Returning home, he began leading groups of young adults on canoe camping trips down the River Wye – and PGL was born! Sadly Peter died in 2004 but his original passions still live on today, in a growing and thriving organisation and the generations of children who have benefitted from what he created.

WHAT WE OFFER Dedicated teams

Every year our teams work with over 300,000 lively children and teenagers. We are dedicated to helping your child discover their independence, build their confidence and make new friends during their exhilarating, action-packed holiday.

First class reputation We are proud of everything we do. Whether it’s our highly trained staff that will teach your children new skills and care for their wellbeing, or offering the best choice of centres and activities, PGL standards are second to none.

The best centres We now have fifteen fantastic adventure centres throughout the UK and abroad which are constantly being updated with the latest and most exhilarating activities. Unlike many other companies, we own or have long leases on all our UK and French centres. This means that we never have to put them to another use or hold back on investing in what’s needed or wanted by our guests to make them better.

Working with the best We are very proud to work with a number of partners and associations. See page 87 for more details.

No need for nerves! To help every child get the most from each experience and bring out the best in your child, we tailor our holidays to age ranges. We also look after them in small groups, giving them all the individual attention and instruction they need. Many PGL children holiday alone but buddy-up first with our great e-Pal service – see page 96 for details.

Group sizes Groupies look after groups which vary in size according to age. For 7–10s the ratio is 1:12, with a lower ratio for older children. Instructor to child ratios vary according to the activity, but here are some examples: • Canoeing 1:8 • Pony trekking 1:8

• Archery 1:4 • Abseiling 1:1

For off-site activities there are always at least two staff in attendance.

Only the best will do

To maintain the standards of excellence for which we are known we rigorously select only the very best of the thousands of candidates who apply every year. We assess them according to their previous FROM work with children, entertainment skills, personality and activity qualifications or experience. Naturally all staff members are DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service, formerly CRB) checked. Additionally, all new appointments are on probation for their first two to four weeks, and continually assessed to ensure they meet our high standards.

Highly trained and qualified

With over 50 years of experience, PGL’s commitment to staff training and development is unsurpassed. Our staff must be adept at bringing out the very best in children, while keeping them safe and happy. So we ensure each one is trained and equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitude to give your children the time of their lives.

PGL Instructors

Trained Instructors take responsibility during activity sessions. We have an excellent safety record of which we are very proud, and we insist our Instructors enforce the highest possible safety standards. Where a formal qualification exists, Instructors must hold it and Trainee Instructors must study for it. Where no recognised qualifications exist, we carry out verified in-house training and assessments.

PGL Centre Managers

Unlike many organisations, all PGL Centre Managers are on permanent, full-time contracts, having worked their way through PGL’s own career system. They set the tone at their centres, and ensure staff stay motivated throughout the whole year so each week is as good as the first!

PGL Group Leaders (our famous ‘Groupies’!) On arrival at our UK centres, your child will join a small group of similarly aged children in the care of a Group Leader (or ‘Groupie’). Our Groupies are exceptional people, chosen for their ability to communicate with children and look after them. Responsible for children’s social welfare, they will be your child’s main daily contact. Groupies get the lazy bones up in the morning, make sure everybody knows where they should be, encourage regular use of soap and toothpaste, eat meals with the children, organise wacky evening entertainments, and boogie with them at the disco. We train Groupies to come through smiling – and the children simply love them!

PGL HOLIDAY CONSULTANTS

Our Holiday Consultants are second to none. Most are parents and know our centres well, so are best placed to answer any questions you may have. They can’t wait to help you plan the perfect holiday for your child – so call them now! No question is too small or unusual. We won’t rush you but we know you’re busy so we’ll try to be as efficient and straightforward as we can. We’re not an impersonal, ‘scripted’ call centre and we won’t be in a hurry to end the call and move on. We get to know many PGL parents and children well and look forward to speaking to them several times a year. So please give us a call on 0844 371 2424. We’d love to hear from you.

Adventure Activity Licensing Authority

PGL’s overseas centres operate to the same high safety standards as those in the UK, although they are not subject to the UK’s Adventure Activities Licensing Authority regulations.

We are subject to the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority regulations. These apply to activities taking place in potentially hazardous open environment situations, such as: • Climbing, abseiling or scrambling over natural terrain and cliffs • T rekking on foot, horse riding or cycling over remote hill country or mountains •W atersports on the sea, tidal waters, large lakes or white water PGL has been granted AALA licences to operate the following: • Kayaking, canoeing, dragon boating and raft building on Drummonds Dub Lake (Hillcrest) • Abseiling on the customised cliff (Boreatton Park) • Watersports (Little Canada)

None of our other activities require licences because they take place in such safe environments. The Licensing Authority helpline for enquiries is 02920 755 715.

All PGL sailing centres in France are RYA (Royal Yachting Association) recognised teaching establishments and all canoeing at our centres in France is BCU (British Canoe Union) approved.

WE OFFER THREE PGL TRAVEL OPTIONS:

1. Fully Escorted Travel

3. Airport/Eurostar Pick-ups

A PGL member of staff travels with your child from the meeting point (see list opposite), where they are signed in, to arrival at the centre. On return, we escort your child back to the meeting point, where the Travel Courier will remain on duty until all children are collected. Escorted travel to and from UK centres is available in the Summer on Saturdays, with the exception of Little Canada where it’s also available on a Monday to Friday four night mini break, see opposite. With adult supervision all the way to, and from, the centre, fully escorted travel is a popular choice with many parents. Most journeys are by coach (fitted with lap belts). Some also include rail travel, such as the journey from London to Beam House, or a short ferry crossing in the case of Little Canada.

For children travelling from outside the UK, we offer an escorted travel service to our centres from Heathrow airport, and the London Eurostar terminal;

For children on holiday in the UK for more than one week, escorted intercentre transfers are available between most centres.

2. Station Transfer

For children old enough to travel alone by train, we offer a pick-up service from the station nearest to each centre. This service is only escorted from the arrival station to the centre, and vice versa. Our staff will meet arrivals at the station between 15.30 and 16.30. At the end of the holiday, they will return guests to the station for trains departing between 09.00 and 10.00. This service is only available for Saturday arrivals and departures. Please note this service does not include rail tickets, which you must book and give to your child.

Age groups

We have three main age groups in the UK: 7–10 year olds, 10–13 year olds and 13–16 year olds. In France, we have two age groups: 9–13 year olds and 13–17 year olds. The ‘overlap’ between these age ranges allows flexibility when there are a few years difference between brothers and sisters. It also means that, for example, a mature 10 year old may join a holiday for 10–13 year olds, whilst a ‘young’ 10 year old may be much happier on a holiday for the 7–10 age group. You know your own child best but please feel free to discuss the options with our Holiday Consultants. Within these separate age bands, our practice is to group children of a similar age together for accommodation and activity arrangements, whenever this is feasible. This may not be possible on some holidays when numbers are small, but this is rarely a problem because the interest in activities provides a common bond. Siblings or friends of the same sex can (where space permits) be roomed together. Please ensure you request this at the time of booking. Siblings or friends from different age groups requesting to be roomed together will not usually share with other guests and will usually be roomed close to other children’s rooms in the youngest child’s age group to ensure that the younger child can be correctly supervised from their earlier bed-time. As always, our holiday consultants will be pleased to advise you on any aspect of our accommodation groupings. Please note that our sleeping arrangements both in the UK and on Overseas holidays are single sex. It is not possible for brothers and sisters to share accommodation.

Details of the activities are on the centre pages, but if you have any questions at all, please call and speak to one of our team. No experience necessary

Our holidays provide challenge and enjoyment for everyone. You don’t need any previous experience to enjoy our activities and our staff are able and ready to instruct children of all standards of competence. A reasonable level of fitness is required for our Surfing, Wet and Wild, Xtreme Adventure and Skiing and Snowboarding holidays.

Equipment

We provide all the specialist equipment that is essential for our activities, although children do need to bring personal items such as a good waterproof anorak or kagoul, footwear and casual clothes. We ensure that children are kitted out with activity equipment that conforms to British or European standards. Approved buoyancy aids or lifejackets are provided and must be worn during watersports sessions, and safety craft are always on patrol or standing by. Strict range disciplines are enforced for archery and rifle shooting. Abseilers and climbers are always protected by safety ropes, and our motorsports vehicles have all had their speeds

Off-site activities & excursions Some of the evening entertainment (mainly for 13–17 years) may take place off-site. If you do not want your child to take part in any off-site activities or excursions please make this clear at the time of booking.

No child is allowed off-site unless accompanied by a member of our staff. Children are supervised at all times. An exception may be made on holidays that include visits to places such as theme parks or local towns where it is impractical to walk around in a large group. In such circumstances children will not be in groups of less than three. Our staff will regularly meet up with them and are contactable at all times.

Smoking

We strongly discourage smoking but full smoking bans in the past have led to unauthorised smoking in areas likely to be a fire risk – tents dormitories etc. As safety is our number one priority we therefore operate a system using ‘official’ supervised smoking areas set away from other guests or any fire risk. Smoking is only allowed strictly for 16 or 17 year olds where parental consent has been given on the medical form. Interestingly, a side effect of this approach tends to be that a number of smokers choose not to smoke at all rather than be forced to adopt the rigours of our strict safety policy. Smoking outside any authorised area is a serious offence for which guests will be sent home.

Catering

Fun may be important, but so is food. We want to inspire children into a healthier lifestyle that includes a tasty, balanced diet. To support this, and in addition to our fantastic new dining halls, we work closely with leading catering organisations to ensure our food is the best it can be. We aim to provide three healthy, high energy meals per day, with plenty of variety, supporting the five-a-day campaign as well as reducing added salt, sugar and fat. A vegetarian alternative can always be provided on all our holidays, and we can accommodate most special diets required on medical or religious grounds. In all these cases we do require full details at time of booking. Please see a sample menu below.

Alcohol

Consumption of alcohol by guests is banned at all PGL centres in the UK and France. In France and Austria, please note that even those guests who are 16 and over who legally speaking may consume beer and wine in Europe, are subject to this ban. This also applies to the consumption of alcohol off-site and the purchase of alcohol offsite. Please note that guests who break this rule will be excluded from the holiday and collection will be at the expense of parents/guardians.

Sensible bedtimes

Even the fittest children feel tired after a full day of activities followed by our evening entertainment programmes, so we try to insist on sensible bedtimes for children to ensure that everyone gets a good night’s rest. Exact times may vary from centre to centre but are typically 20.30 for 7–10 year olds, 21.30 for 10–13s and 22.30 for 13–17 year olds.

guardians during unsociable hours. We reserve the right to send any child home immediately at parent/guardians’ expense and to charge for any additional costs incurred. No refunds will be considered for any children sent home for behavioural reasons. Children will be asked to pay for any damage caused by wilful behaviour to any PGL owned or leased property. Please ensure you have read our booking conditions.

Night-time supervision

Fire safety drill

All children are made aware of safety procedures and shown exits and assembly points before they go to bed on their first night at the centre. There is a weekly fire drill at all centres.

It is part of our staff’s role to get everyone to bed reasonably on time – sometimes easier said than done! Once ‘lights out’ has been called at UK centres night duty staff take over. They reassure the anxious, encourage the high spirited to settle down and continue their vigil until all is quiet. At centres where children need to leave their tent or lodge to get to the toilet facilities, security staff patrol the campsite or accommodation area throughout the night. Elsewhere there is a night duty rota and a member of staff can be contacted at any time should the need arise. Centre doors are locked, although these can be opened from the inside in case of emergency.

Contacting your child

Personal hygiene

Our team will encourage good hygiene at all times, including the regular use of soap and toothpaste. However all children are expected to take an element of personal responsibility for showering and cleaning their teeth during their holiday.

Discipline & responsibility

Living alongside and mixing with other children is a valuable part of the holiday experience and we try to ensure that no one feels left out. Every member of the group has an equal right to enjoy themselves and we keep a close check on teasing, bullying or any other antisocial behaviour that may spoil an individual’s enjoyment. Our experience over many years means that this rarely becomes a problem, but please tell your children that if they feel they are being picked on, they should inform their Group Leader or any other member of staff immediately. The “don’t tell” ethos, which sometimes exists in schools, is not applicable at a PGL centre. If your child should make contact with you regarding any negative aspect of their holiday, please check whether our staff have been informed. If not, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may take immediate steps to remedy the situation. When necessary, we will be firm with children who are jeopardising the enjoyment of others. If problem behaviour is persistent or serious, we will contact the parent or guardian to decide on further action. Please note it may on occasion be necessary to contact parents/

Of course, for some children, being away from home may initially be a little stressful. This is natural and only to be expected – even adults can experience ‘homesickness’! Our staff are fully trained in the sensitive skills of identifying and dealing with children’s concerns and worries. In the vast majority of cases, a day or two of getting to know new friends and being involved in exciting activities will dispel all but the most persistent worries. You will, of course, be kept informed if there are any persistent problems. We do ask you not to telephone the centre excessively to speak to your child, particularly during the first couple of days. Apart from the fact that your child is probably in the middle of an activity session/ in the shower/eating dinner, and therefore far from the telephone, our experience has shown that children really do settle in much better if undisturbed by personal telephone calls. We will, of course, pass on any personal messages and all of our centres have the facilities for passing on emails. Details are provided in your welcome pack. The Centre Manager or another senior member of staff is always available should you wish to telephone to ask about your child.

Staying on for an extra week? If your child is staying for more than one week, we recommend that they either book onto a different holiday or try a different centre for the second week. Inter-centre transfers can be arranged between most centres.

We can provide one machine wash at UK centres, but there may be a small charge. Guests may also be taken off site on a day trip on the second Saturday of the holiday to keep them occupied if there are no organised activities that day and to allow the centre to prepare for new arrivals. Where they will go will depend upon which centre they go to. There is no charge for this.

DON’T FORGET FROM

What to bring

It is important that you read your Welcome Pack when its arrives as it contains lots of useful information, including what to bring.

All essential activity and safety equipment is provided, but your child will need to bring personal clothing, footwear, wash kit, towels, a swim suit and extra towels (if applicable) and pocket money. We suggest that your child does not bring valuable items such as MP3 players, personal stereos, PSP’s, DS’s, valuable watches and jewellery and any other items of value. We cannot take any responsibility for the above should you choose to bring them.

Bedding

The majority of our holiday centres do not automatically supply bedding. If for any reason you are not able to bring your own sleeping bag/duvet from home, it is possible to hire bedding for UK holidays at a cost of £22 per child. Depending upon the centre, bedding consists of pillow and pillowcase and either duvet, duvet cover and sheet or sleeping bag and sheet inner.

Many of our guests travel on their own. Just give our reservations staff your e-mail address at the time of booking and we will try to arrange an e-Pal introduction. We will try to match your child with another guest on the same holiday, at the same time. Once a match has been made we will forward the email address to each guest, advising them accordingly. Please bear in mind that it takes us time to build up a pool of names, before we’re able to connect you with an e-Pal. We can only make one introduction per person, and ages will never be more than two years apart. If we cannot find a pal for your child, we’ll contact you in due course to advise – but don’t worry, about half of our guests arrive on their own and they all leave with lots of new friends!

Lost property

Help us to help you! PGL staff will do their best to return named lost property to owners. However, if lost clothing is not clearly marked, it is unlikely that we will be able to trace it. We strongly recommend woven type name tapes, which should be firmly stitched into an obvious place in each garment. We reserve the right to charge postage and packing for those items returned after your holiday. We retain lost property for two weeks after the end of your child’s holiday.

Swimming

Please clearly indicate swimming ability at the time of booking. Lifejackets or buoyancy aids are always worn for water sports, except for body-boarding, surfing and snorkelling sessions – where if participants are able to swim 50 metres or more, they are not required to wear them. For all water based activities participants must be water confident in a life jacket or buoyancy aid. Water confidence is defined as: - Ability to duck head underwater -C onfidently swim 15 metres in a life jacket or buoyancy aid without signs of panic Alternative activities are arranged for nonwater confident participants at all centres.

Pocket money

However, there are sometimes excursion days, and all centres feature a shop selling sweets and small souvenirs. Some centres for older children also have a pool table in the chill out room at a cost of around 50p per game, and 13–16 year olds may have the opportunity to take part in evening activities off site, such as bowling. A small charge will be made for these to cover transport and entrance fees. There is no obligation for any guest to take part in these optional extras, and a free alternative activity will always be available on centre. The amount of pocket money required obviously varies with the age of the child. On our UK holidays we recommend pocket money (on a sliding scale) from an average of £2 per day for seven year olds, £4 per day for 12 year olds and £5 per day for older teenagers for purchasing drinks, sweets and ice creams; plus between £5 and £20 to purchase gifts which will be on sale all week. We operate a secure system for holding and issuing pocket money in accordance with parents’ wishes.

Birthdays

If your child has a birthday during their PGL holiday, please advise us prior to travel and we will endeavour to make their day one to remember! In the UK this may include a birthday cake with our compliments, to share with their friends.

Passports and documentation For overseas holidays, please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your child has his/her own passport and (if necessary) visa documentation. Holders of non-UK passports should check with their embassy whether a visa will be required. All UK citizens travelling abroad need to be in possession of a valid passport.

Please allow plenty of time for the application process, as we are unable to allow guests to travel without a valid passport. For further information on the country to be visited, please check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-andlivingabroad or visit ABTA’s website www.abta.com. For holidays within Europe, it is essential that you obtain a European Health Insurance Card for your child. You can obtain an EHIC on line at www.ehic.org.uk, by calling 0845 605 0707 or from your local Post Office. Should medical attention be needed whilst within the European Community, an EHIC can save both time and money, avoiding the need to pay a minimum £50 excess charge for any medical treatment claimed from our insurers.

All PGL holidays in the UK are fully inclusive and there is little need to bring large sums of money.

Be insured It is important that everyone travelling with PGL has holiday insurance. Experience has shown that standard policies do not cover all our activities, e.g. motorsports, abseiling and rifle shooting. For your protection, therefore, we have arranged a special policy with Union Reiseversicherung AG. PGL insurance includes the following benefits as long as claims fall within the terms and conditions of the policy: • Cover for all activities organised by PGL • Personal accident up to £25,000 Some benefits are reduced for under 16s • Medical and other expenses up to £5 million for overseas holidays and up to £10,000 (other expenses only) for the UK • Cancellation charges up to the cost of the holiday (maximum £5,000) • Luggage up to £1,500. Single item £250. Valuables limit £250 • Personal money up to £200 • Personal liability up to £1 million • Curtailment of activities at £20 per day in summer or a pro rata refund of the ski pack (lessons, lift pass and ski school) in winter (both up to a maximum of £240)

• Delay compensation, up to the invoice total for abandonment of overseas holidays. Compensation after 12 hours delay is £20 Full details of our insurance cover can be found on our website or can be sent to you upon request. Please note that cancellation cover comes into force when you pay the appropriate premiums. One premium will cover two or more consecutive holiday weeks per child. Non consecutive weeks require separate premiums. Most of the above sections are subject to £35 excess (up to £250 excess for legal expenses). Please read the Key Insurance Facts over the page. If payment is not made by the due date, we reserve the right to advise you of the cancellation of your holiday booking and make a cancellation charge at the appropriate rate. Full payment must accompany bookings made within 12 weeks of departure. The Package Travel, Package Holidays, and Package Tours Regulations 1992 require us to provide security for the monies that you pay for the holiday booked from this brochure and for repatriation in the event of our insolvency. We provide this security by way of a bond held by ABTA. Changing your booking or travel If, after you have confirmed your booking, you wish to make any alterations, an administration charge of £25 will be made per child. Any such amendment may be telephoned to PGL in the first instance but must be confirmed in writing immediately thereafter with the appropriate amount enclosed. However, if a major amendment is requested less than 8 weeks prior to the starting date of the holiday, we reserve the right to treat your request as a cancellation and charge the appropriate cancellation fee as detailed below.

In order that all our staff have the correct information we cannot accept additions or alterations to travel arrangements within 7 days of the commencement of the holiday. If we are forced to make changes PGL will do its utmost to provide all of the arrangements that have been confirmed, but must reserve the right to alter or cancel any activities, accommodation or other arrangements, including escorted travel, if operational, weather or other considerations so dictate. If we have to make a major change to your holiday, we will offer a suitable alternative if available, or 100% refund, if we are not able, in our opinion, to offer an alternative that is sufficiently comparable. Compensation will be paid as below if we have to make a major change to your holiday within 8 weeks of holiday commencement, unless the change is due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to war, riot, civil commotion, act of God, industrial dispute, Government action, epidemic, disease, adverse weather or natural disaster. • 56–29 days – 10% of holiday price • 28–15 days – 15% of holiday price • 14 days or less – 25% of holiday price

The price of your holiday is subject to surcharge due to unforeseen increases in fuel costs, Government action such as increases in VAT or any other Government imposed increases or adverse currency exchange rate variations. Only amounts in excess of this 2% will be surcharged but, where a surcharge is payable, there will be an administration charge of £1 together with an amount to cover agents’ commission where relevant. If this means paying more than 10% of the holiday price, you will be entitled to cancel your holiday with a full refund of all money paid except for any premium paid to us for holiday insurance and amendment charges. Should you decide to cancel because of this, you must exercise your right to do so within 14 days from the issue date printed on the surcharge advice. The prices of our holidays abroad have been fixed according to an exchange rate of 1.1990 euros to £1 as published in the Financial Times on 7 November 2013. Your responsibility It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to advise PGL of a child’s special diet and swimming ability in writing or by telephone at the time of booking. This information will be reconfirmed to you in our documentation. (All children participating in watersports must be able to meet PGL’s swimming requirements as detailed in the Parent Guide.)

Any complaints If there is any problem with the holiday, we want to put this right for you as soon as possible. Please ask your child to mention it to their Group Leader/Courier/Centre Manager straightaway. Alternatively, we will be pleased to make a phone available, so your child can speak with you if this is preferable. We would ask you to make immediate contact with either the centre or Head Office in Ross-on-Wye. If we have been unable to find a solution, you have 28 days from the end of your holiday to write to us to explain your grievance.

It is also the responsibility of the parent/guardian or other person acting in ‘loco parentis’ to fully advise PGL, when booking, and then follow this up in writing, of any illness, disabilities, social or behavioural problems that a youngster currently has, or has recently experienced, which might affect the youngster or other guests during the PGL holiday. We may request written confirmation from your GP/teacher confirming the suitability of the holiday for your child with particular reference to such considerations as social compatibility, physical access, successful participation and health and safety.

If you are still unhappy, your complaint may be referred to arbitration under a special scheme arranged by the Association of British Travel Agents in conjunction with the Institute of Arbitrators. This scheme provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone, with restricted liability on a customer in respect of costs. The scheme does not apply to claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims which are solely or mainly in respect of physical injury or illness or the consequences of such injury or illness. The scheme can however deal with compensation claims involving minor injury or illness, subject to a limit of £1,000 per person. Application for arbitration must be made within 9 months of return from holiday. Further details can be supplied by ABTA on request. Their address is: 30 Park Street, London SE1 9EQ.

We will naturally treat any personal information sensitively and respect confidentiality. We are committed to making our holidays as accessible to as many guests as possible, however, very occasionally we may not be able to provide the service required and will refund any deposit paid.

Our responsibility PGL accepts responsibility for those elements of the holiday arrangements which are under our direct control and for the acts and/or omissions of our employees, agents, subcontractors and suppliers. Save as set out below, no liability is accepted for personal illness, injury or death. We do accept responsibility for any personal illness, injury or death which results from the negligent (as the word is understood in the English Law) acts or omissions of any servant or agent, or any supplier, working on our behalf in the provision of services or facilities to you and whilst acting within the scope of their employment.

We reserve the right to exclude any person before or after holiday commencement if important personal details have not been fully declared and/or his/her behaviour is incompatible with the general enjoyment and wellbeing of others. Collection would be entirely at the responsibility and expense of the person acting in ‘loco parentis’ to whom any costs for damage and other expenses incurred would also be charged. No refunds will be considered for any children sent home for behavioural reasons. Behaviour deemed inappropriate may include: nder age buying and consumption of alcohol •U • L eaving the site unless accompanied by a PGL member of staff • S uspected involvement with illegal drugs • S moking outside of designated areas and smoking by under 16s • E ntering accommodation used by the opposite sex • T heft or illegal activities • T hreatening behaviour, bullying, offensive or insulting language to other guests, PGL staff or any other person resident on centre •A nti-social behaviour affecting other guests enjoyment of their holiday
