Local residents History in the telling ... turn out to harness solar energy By Erin Kelly Citing motivations ranging from protecting the environment to electrical blackouts to reducing energy bills, a group of residents have been meeting during November to discuss bringing solar power to Point Roberts. Shauna Sylvester, drawing from her knowledge of solar cooperatives, decided along with her husband, Steve Work, to take the initiative to see if the Point Roberts community would be interested in starting a cooperative. She organized weekly information meetings to gauge residents’ interest in the concept of a solar cooperative. Hoping to leverage the collective negotiating power of the community, they plan to lay the groundwork during winter months to prepare for spring initiatives, notably crafting a Request for Proposals to engage potential solar installers. From the beginning, participants have expressed interest in solar power and storage that encompasses both residential and communal locations. According to Sylvester, “There’s a real interest in ensuring that as Point Roberts goes solar, our community buildings have solar and storage battery backup.” “This is growing in momentum,” Sylvester said. The number of attendees has grown from 40 to 85 people, including 10 volunteers who have facilitated the sessions. The initiative has drawn interest from the Washington State Department of Commerce, prompting discussions concerning grant applications and feasibility studies for community solar and storage across various community buildings. The next and final information session will be held at the community center on Wednesday, December 6 at 7 p.m. The meeting will feature Lauren Clemens, the climate action manager for Whatcom County. For those interested in attending or who have questions or are seeking involvement, Sylvester can be reached at Shauna. Sylvester@gmail.com. Photos, page 8.

District approves 1 percent hike B y P a t G r u bb The Point Roberts Hospital District board of commissioners voted in favor of taking a 1 percent hike in its annual levy at a special board meeting held November 27. Taxing districts in Washington state are allowed to take an annual 1 percent hike without seeking voter approval. The move came as the board approved the district’s 2024 budget. The projected 2024 levy totals $291,723, up $2,881 from 2023’s $288,120. Total expenses are projected to equal income (including refund of $722), or $291,723. Around The Point Whidbey Telecom chief operating officer Donna Hilty attended the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee meeting on November 26 to discuss the stalled progress on the company’s broadband project after archeological artifacts were discovered while installing underground fiber on Marine Drive back in May. “It is our hope and our plan this will be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction so we can start getting back to work in the first quarter of 2024, and finish 18 weeks after we begin,” said Hilty. According to Hilty, the delays were due to the fact that several federal agencies are involved in discussing necessary mitigation measures with the Lummi Nation, a process that typically doesn’t take as long when federal funds are not involved. ❦ The Circle of Care board is in talks with the Whatcom Transit Authority (WTA)

to begin a yearlong pilot project that will bring public transportation to the Point. “At present, WTA are planning on donating a van to the Circle of Care. Circle of Care will then receive a donation in the form of a grant, I assume, from WTA that will fund driver’s hourly wages, cost of gas, cost of repairs, and cost of insurance,” Circle of Care executive director told trustees at their last meeting. The Circle of Care would initially manage the bus for a year and then a more formal organization would need to be put in place. The organization has been asked to create an annual budget to move forward. ❦ Point Roberts Park and Recreation District board chair Mitch Friedman has submitted paperwork needed to allow public use of the multi-purpose room at the Point Roberts Primary School. The school district will charge $3/hour for the use of the room. While unheated,

the room is suitable for basketball or pickleball during inclement weather. Groups or individuals interested in using the room should contact the parks district. The district held a special meeting on November 21 to approve a proposal by newly elected chair, Stephen Falk to apply for a Washington State Department of Commerce grant for electrical vehicle charging stations at the community center. The grant would cover 75 percent of the costs with the remainder of the costs borne by the district. A motion was passed to apply for the grant for one DCFC and two Level 2 chargers. If the grant is awarded, it will cost the park department approximately $25,000.

Letters To The Editor The Editor: I would like to thank all those who came out for the fire department’s Haunted House. It was our first since the pandemic and was a great event. We met our goal of providing some increased heart rates to adults and children! Thank you everyone for helping make it a great day. Christopher Carleton, fire chief Point Roberts The Editor: I found Brian Calder’s Letter to The Editor in the November issue of the All Point Bulletin very interesting. It prompted me to write in. Brian’s letter was regarding the use of, or lack thereof, commercial businesses along Gulf Road. Brian has common sense and experience to back up his comments and concerns. I attended a planning meeting about 16 years ago. I listened as the conversation centered on commercial enterprises along Gulf Road and how to rejuvenate and create more commercial businesses. The conversation shifted to perhaps creating a commercial zone at the north end of Marine Drive close to the border. I waited until everyone spoke, then put in my two bits’ worth. For starters, I pointed out that a tourist crossing the border into Point Roberts would find it hard to drive south on Tyee Drive, turn right on Gulf Road heading west then turn right on Marine Drive and head back north near the border for any commercial business. Secondly, I suggested that if Kiniski’s Reef Tavern was sold, the new owner would most likely build four to six condo units. Thirdly, any tourist driving south on Tyee Drive who gets close to Gulf Road and sees the open ocean and the masts of the sail boats to the south would want to continue

on that path. I ended my observations with a proposal that the planning committee consider looking into creating a small commercial hub near the marina. A place where you could park your car, walk around, have a meal from one of a few small restaurants, a pub or check out some craft stores. It would have been a perfect location for the Point Roberts Museum/Historical Center, a realty office and general information center to let people know about the golf course, the parks, and other things to do at the Point. A gathering place with an amazing ambience. I get it that this is no easy proposal, but it should have been considered for a longterm plan that would put a whole new spin on what is truly needed for long term economic stability. I have seen and experienced small towns and places that have scattered or commercial ventures in the wrong locations. No fault to those people who came after the fact, but it never works as well as it could have. I struggle sometimes with people that have no vision of how things should or could be to make a better place or situation for everyone. My therapist tells me to let it go. Lol. A Blaine school district substitute teacher was arrested November 2 on suspicion of first-degree child molestation after two middle school students reported he inappropriately touched them. Blaine Police Department (BPD) began investigating Gerald William Robinson, 61, on October 13 after Blaine Middle School reported that multiple female students had complained of inappropriate conduct by Robinson, wrote BPD sergeant Tim Richardson in an email to the All Point Bulletin. Two female students between the ages of 11 and 12 years old reported Robinson touching intimate areas over their clothing, BPD lieutenant Michael Munden said. More than 10 students have reported to Blaine police that Robinson made them feel uncomfortable by staring or making inappropriate comments, though not all of those reports were criminal in nature, Munden said. All of the incidents have occurred since the start of the school year on the middle school campus, Munden said, and some of those reports were caught on camera. Robinson declined to speak to Blaine police and was arrested without incident. Blaine officers booked Robinson into Whatcom County Jail on November 2 on a preliminary charge of first-degree child molestation. On November 3, Robinson was released

after posting a $2,500 cash bond and had his preliminary court appearance. Blaine school district superintendent Christopher Granger wrote in an email that Robinson began working as a substitute in January and worked at the Blaine primary, elementary, middle and high schools. The district removed Robinson from its substitute list after learning that Robinson may have engaged in appropriate behavior. “The district takes the health, safety and welfare of the district’s students very seriously and throughout this process the district will remain focused providing a positive educational experience for its students,” Granger wrote. Anyone with additional information on this case or who has had an experience they feel is inappropriate behavior should call 911 and make a report, Munden said. If you or someone you know is affected by domestic or sexual violence, the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (DVSAS) 24-hour hotline is available at 360/715-1563 or 877/715-1563.

New property management firm opens By Erin Kelly Justin Brunsvik is the designated broker and owner of Lifeline Rentals, a new property management company in Point Roberts. He previously owned a property management business in Atlanta and relocated to the Point three years ago, intending to share his property management skills with the local community. Lifeline Rentals closely mirrors his Atlanta-based venture and is fully licensed in Washington state. Having originally been an investor in 30 rental properties, he was dissatisfied with management companies he hired. He found they prioritized commissions over the quality of tenants, looking for profits rather than seeking long-term

solutions. He subsequently assumed direct management, implementing rigorous tenant screenings which led to exponential growth in his investment properties’ income and attracting numerous investors seeking his property management services. With a dedicated team of seven professionals, Lifeline Rentals caters to diverse property management needs, encompassing seasonal, monthly, or yearly rentals, property upkeep, inspections, and maintenance services. The company extends its expertise beyond standard property management to encompass distressed asset resolution. When not working, Justin spends time with his wife and family of three kids, two dogs, two cats, and 20 chickens. He embraces a simpler Point Roberts family life-

style. When asked what drew him to the Point, Brunsvik responded, “I love the idea of raising kids and being able to somewhat step back in time and let them ride bikes

and not have to worry.” For more information, go to lifelinerentals.com.

Changes in store at school board New history trail offers outdoor fun and learning B N B y

With the election results now certified, the Blaine school board is set to see three newcomers and a change in district for one incumbent when members are sworn-in in January 2024. The looming $14 million budget shortfall that forced the cutting of roughly 60 district staff this past summer was the top issue for most candidates. Erika Creydt unseated Kimberly Akre for the district 1 position, winning handily with 64.7 percent (3,845) of the vote. Creydt, a third-generation Blaine resident who was appointed to serve the district 3 board position in 2021, won a majority of votes in all 18 precincts. In her written responses to the candidate Q&A in the All Point Bulletin prior to elections, Creydt sees the enrollment decrease as a huge problem for the district to tackle, especially with state funding expected to shrink in upcoming budgets. Creydt wrote that highlighting parent perspectives and “fostering a culture from the top down that encourages communication,” between students, parents and faculty as a blueprint for keeping students in the district. For the district 2 board seat, Ben Lazarus defeated Dean Berkeley with a resounding 61.3 percent (3,726) of ballots in his favor. Lazarus also won all 18 precincts. Lazarus, who has two children attending Blaine High School, said in his candidate Q&A he doesn’t want the looming $14 million budget deficit to force cuts to things that he says draw in more students, like arts and sports programs. It is unclear what programs, if any, will be cut or reduced to meet budget requirements, but Washington state law requires every public-school student have “access to arts education.” Cliff Freeman defeated Jeff Carrington for the district 3 position, winning 62.5 percent (3,717) of the votes. In his response to the Q&A, Freeman said he is adamantly opposed to any new taxes or levies to increase revenue to the district. Freeman also wrote he intends to review school curriculum and state re-

quirements, which he called “craziness.” Freeman wrote that the school board needs to “stop the woke agenda that is poisoning the minds of our kids.” In the position 4 race, Ryan Ford defeated Derrick Bovenkamp with 59.2 percent (3,497) of the vote. Ford told the All Point Bulletin he plans on exploring novel options to garner more funding for the district, like government or even private sector grants. Ford also believes there is a growing rift between the teaching staff and the district that is in need of mending. “There is a lot of repair needed [between teachers and administration] and I want to see what can be done through open communication with teachers,” Ford wrote. Don Leu ran unopposed for district 5, receiving 98.9 percent of the votes. Leu is a retired professor from the University of Connecticut and earned a master’s degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. at University of California, Berkeley. He’s authored numerous books on literacy education and taught elementary school in the Bay Area.

By Mark Swenson The Point Roberts Historical Society is nearing the completion of the Point Roberts History Trail, a new project to showcase the Point’s rich history. The History Trail is a series of interpretive signs which explain local history where it happened. After four years of work by a team of volunteers, the final signs are being installed this month. Found all over Point Roberts, over two dozen signs feature write-ups and historical photos. The History Trail covers subjects ranging from Coast Salish history, Icelandic heritage, neighborhoods and notable residents, memorable former businesses, to the Point’s recreation and culture. The historical society received two grants for the project, one from the Whatcom Community Foundation’s Project Neighborly, and one from the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation’s Valerie Sivinski Fund. After the economic impact of the border closure during the pandemic, it is hoped the History Trail, and the Point Roberts History Center Museum on Gulf Road, will help drive tourism as well as encourage visitors to spend more time on the Point and venture beyond gas stations and parcel depots.

A 39-year-old Vancouver resident won’t soon forget his first visit to Point Roberts. Daniel (he asked not to use his full name) came down to Point Roberts on November 10 with a friend who needed to check his mail at one of the Point’s mailing houses. After filling up his gas tank, the two decided on a short tour of the Point, seeing as he hadn’t been here before. Just around 11 p.m., Daniel accidently turned left onto APA Road from Tyee Drive and drove east towards Lily Point. Just after passing Highland Drive, the wind began picking up and he noticed debris on the road. Instead of going around it (and thereby avoiding going into the ditch), he opted for a three-point turn. Just as he finished doing so and shifted into drive to return the way they had come, the two heard a loud snap and a crash as a large part of a maple tree fell onto his car, a 2012 Ford Fusion. The two men exited the vehicle from the passenger side, totally unharmed. Asked about his reaction, Daniel said, “Mostly just panic and shock went through my head when the tree hit because it was so fast and unexpected. With the tree crashing down, and us running for our lives afterwards, it kinda felt like those Jurassic Park movies where the T. rex attacks the car and then chases the people. “Just an overall terrifying feeling. The biggest fear we had were more trees falling on us, so we got out and ran as fast as we could to [Tyee Drive] where it was a lot safer, and where we could collect ourselves and call for help. Most of the comments from people when I have shown them pictures [of the tree and car] are, ‘How did you survive this?’ and ‘Did you buy a lottery to ticket?’ “Mostly just panic and survival mode

went through our heads, because we were unsure if more trees or power lines were going to fall. The accident left me grappling with stress and anxiety that I’m slowly getting over. I did not buy a lottery ticket. “On the way down APA Road, I saw a nice little church, and my advice would be for more people to attend it because I know that I certainly will. What happened was nothing short of a miracle,” he said. Will he return? “It’s not going to be my last time at Point Roberts. It’s a nice little town. I heard there’s a spot where you can see whales, so I’m probably going to check that out one day. Another friend of mine talks about the pubs he used to visit there, so I’d like to explore those in the summer with him. I’m just never going to go down APA Road ever again,” he concluded.

s What next? A T. rex?

Circle of Care holiday fundraisers

By Jean Barrington The new liturgical year for Christian churches world-wide begins on Sunday, December 3, 2023. It isn’t a hallmark kind of season. There are no cards to be sent. There are advent calendars, however, most of which are focused on children counting down to Christmas day and packages to be opened. And why not? The season of advent is about waiting and who knows better about waiting than children? Just as children wait with hope for that exciting time of Christmas day with its gifts and treats and time off from the usual – so waits the world, for peace, love and joy! We are all waiting. We are waiting for our lives to begin in ways we have hoped for so long. For many that means good health, housing and full stomachs. For others, possibly an education or a long-sought job or starting life with the love of their life. But for far too many in the world – those living in unsafe places, in war zones, and refugee camps – it means waiting for safety and a new beginning. We are all waiting, especially for peace. The church expresses these hopes all year, but especially in the season of advent as it waits for the fulfillment of all these

Next Issue: Jan. 2024

hopes, dreams and promises in the coming of Jesus into the world at Christmas, into our hearts daily and into our world at the end of time when he will gather all unto God, mending what sin has torn apart; then peace, love and light will reign forever. The church calls that heaven – and aren’t we are all waiting for that time of joy in one way or another? It is important what we do while we wait. The spirit of the season is to help each other out. It is traditional in America to give throughout this season, be it food or money to a food bank, physical help to someone in need, money to organizations that try to ease the pain of the world. This year take time to really hear and to see what others need. We cannot do a great deal individually to heal the world, but we can bring light to another’s life. It may cost us nothing more than a smile and a kind word. We all have that to give if we only take the time. This year Trinity Church will have traditional worship with communion on Christmas Eve at 11 a.m. On Christmas Day, lessons and carols will be shared at 11 a.m. Please join us. May the spirit of Christmas be with you throughout 2024.

Circle of Care has two win/win fund-raising products this month: holiday swags (our ninth year!) and picturesque Point Roberts 2024 wall calendars. Swags come in vertical or horizontal designs, are lushly decorated and can be collected Friday afternoon, December 1 at Trinity Church hall with perhaps some for sale at the Holiday Craft Fair at the fire hall on December 3 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)where we will serve soups, sandwiches and baked goodies. Swags are $20, $30 and $35. Email your order with colors or theme requests to prcocswags@gmail.com. The 2024 wall calendars will be available at the fair for pickup or purchase. These beautiful calendars feature the work of local photographers showcasing the Point and one iconic person and cost $23. Please send your orders to prcoccalendars@gmail.com. Our motto for most of our fund-raisers is: You give something, you get something. It’s a win/win for everyone! The Angel Project This project was initiated by former resident Pamala Sheppard in 2020 during the pandemic and is now managed by Circle

of Care. It provides gift cards or cash to needy families and seniors during the holidays. Let’s do it again this year and make the season bright for everyone! If you are aware of someone who you believe is struggling and could benefit, please email prcircleofcare@gmail.com. Please contribute to the donation jars at the following locations: Kora’s Corner, Point Fuel and Pantry, Umpqua Bank (you can get a receipt if you deposit into the Circle of Care account, designate that your donation is for the Angel Project), Nielson’s Building Center and Speedway Fuel. If you’d prefer to donate via Paypal, please go to prcircleofcare.com and click on the donate button. Let us know that your contribution is for the Angel Project. SERVING POINT ROBERTS SINCE 1967

s Egidio Trasolini. s David Ho. David Ho Born August 14, 1937 Family and friends are mourning the recent and unexpected passing of David Ho. During a routine walk in his neighbourhood near Diefenbaker Park, he lost his way and was unable to find his way home in the harsh weather conditions. David was not only creative, intelligent, caring, and hardworking but, as a loving husband and father his devotion to his wife and family was exceptional and unconditional. An active and caring member of the McKee Senior Centre, he enjoyed participating in snooker, jazzercise, and sing-along groups. With a wonderful voice and a love of performing, he took his dream of being a rock star and poured it into his karaoke singing. David and his wife May volunteered at the Kinsmen Retirement Centre (now known as Kin Village) in Tsawwassen, Austin-Harris Residence in Richmond, The Cedars at Beulah Gardens in Vancouver, and McKee Senior Centre in Ladner. Diefenbaker Park was one of David’s favourite destinations on his neighbourhood strolls. He would routinely walk around the park and then enjoy the view during a rest on a bench overlooking the whole park. David had relentless determination to succeed at whatever he tried. After starting out in plastic manufacturing, in 1983, he and May founded the Delta Tackle manufacturing company and David put his heart and hard work into this business until he retired in 2005. David leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, May, his four children, Cecilia (Greg), Davis (Jessie), Angela, and Benita, as well as his three grandsons, Dawson, Joshua, and Justin. The family expresses their deep gratitude to the Delta Police Department, Whatcom County Fire District 5, and the search and rescue teams and volunteer searchers in Tsawwassen and Point Roberts. We would also like to acknowledge Dr. S. Noble who has been very helpful and supportive. In addition, we thank the many neighbours and friends David met during his walks. A small, private service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Whatcom County Fire District 5 (Point Roberts). (ccarleton@wcfd5.com) “When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark. At the end of the storm, there’s a golden sky and the sweet silver song of a lark. Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone. You’ll never walk alone.”—Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein David, you’ll never walk alone.

Egidio Trasolini September 3, 1930 – October 11, 2023 On October 11, 2023, Egidio Trasolini, sadly, passed away, surrounded by his loving family; he loved to the end, and now rests with the angels. He was immensely loved by his family and friends and anyone that knew him. He leaves behind his loving wife, Iolanda, of 66 years and his children Edoardo (Dorice), Susanna (David), Franco (Donna), Paolo (Christine). His grandchildren Marina, Diana, Robert, Marc, Cristina, Andrew, Sarina, Tianna, Alessandro, Matteo, Luca and Francesca along with his great-grandchildren Maia, Sofia, Leo, Isla, Bennett, Sienna, Audrey, Gia, Jackson, Anthony, and his large extended Italian family. Born in Torrice, Frosinone, Italy on September 3, 1930 to his father and mother Gerardo and Anna Trasolini, he was one of five children. Egidio, a pioneer, Italian immigrant and natural entrepreneur came to Canada in 1950. Driven, he started his family, had four children and worked hard at his asphalt paving business in Vancouver. In 1968, Egidio was introduced to Point Roberts and he instantly fell in love. In 1977 he had a dream to build a marina in Point Roberts, with the first boats taking moorage in 1979. His dream became a reality. Point Roberts was his paradise, and his home away from home. Egidio was an avid fisherman, anything to provide for his family, it was all about the catch! He took great pride in tending his garden, often greeted by a passer-by or neighbor, always ready to give a little advice, a tomato, or a word of encouragement. Egidio or, as we say, Nonno, would often travel Edwards Drive to bring his family garden vegetables, fruit or anything that he had caught. His family was his life, there was no greater joy or prize than this. He lived life with great determination and passion. He loved life and loved each family gathering, always giving a piece of wisdom especially to his grandchildren. He made his life, and his mark solely with his Christian values, love for his family and dedication to be a good, humble, loving person. We miss Dad, Nonno and Egidio, he blessed our lives forever, and his spirit, work ethic, tenacity, and persistence for life will live forever in all of us. “Arrivaderci Roma,” Dad would say, I’ll see you again.
