Executive is available with a variety of environmental control options which allow screen activation when pre-set times and thresholds for sun or wind are met. The solar settings, which activate the screens prior to the sun’s rays directly entering the building, provide energy savings by reducing solar heat gain and decreasing the use of air conditioning. Phantom’s Executive Screens offer the option of a hand held remote, or in-wall mounted controls that can be integrated into the building’s automation system. 4

Key Solutions Each commercial environment requires a customized approach when dealing with solar heat gain, health and safety considerations, airflow circulation and building design integration. Phantom’s range of products, finish options and mesh choices provide specialized solutions for these design challenges.
Solar Heat Gain With an increasing market focus on sustainable building, the architectural community is continually looking for cost-effective ways to improve thermal comfort and energy savings. The installation of Phantom Screens can reduce glare, solar heat gain, energy usage and long term expenditure. The integration of automated controls (such as timers and wind and solar sensors) helps to enhance efficiency and add convenience. Figure 1 is typical of the level of information architects can expect from manufacturers. As shown in the following table, the addition of a retractable screen can offer considerable improvement in the shading coefficient of the window unit when applied in conjuction with insulating glass. Exterior versus Interior Screening The most efficient way to reduce solar heat gain in a building is to stop the heat before it enters the interior space. For this reason, exterior shade systems are considered more effective than interior solar products. Retractable screens can be mounted on the exterior of windows to absorb and dissipate heat and glare before it reaches the glazing. Example: An exterior mount solar screen in charcoal color with 25% openness has the ability to block up to 75% of the solar heat before it enters the building. The openness level of the mesh combined with the darker shade (which absorbs glare) helps to preserve the view to the outside and maintain a comfortable level of interior light. In order to accomplish the same 75% reduction with an interior shade, the mesh must be light in color (to reflect solar energy) and have an openness factor of less than 5%. Visibility to the outside will be dramatically reduced with the lighter shade color and high mesh density.
Case Study: Community Recreation Center Retrofit Concerns: Solar Heat Gain Solution: 6 Retractable Motorized Executive Screens with: • SheerWeave 2360 Mesh (Oyster/Beige), 90% sun & UV blockage, 10% openness
The District of Saanich in Victoria, British Columbia faced a heat gain issue at the Gordon Head Recreation Center. The floor to ceiling windows on the west-facing wall allowed excess sun into the pool area on warm afternoons resulting in uncomfortable thermal temperatures for patrons. The glare of direct sunlight off the water also limited visibility within the pool area posing a safety issue. Motorized Executive Screens were mounted on the exterior of the building with sun & wind sensors. The sensors detect the level of sunlight and automatically lower the screens before the solar heat passes through the glazing. In cases where significant winds pick up, the sensor controls automatically retract the screens into their protective housings. The Executive Screens have greatly reduced the amount of solar heat gain and created a more comfortable and safer swimming environment.

Insect Protection and Daylight Management Solutions Commercial and institutional establishments, such as restaurants, resorts, business centers, educational venues and health care facilities, should provide occupants with comfortable and healthy environments. Access to quality ventilation, outside views and natural daylight, without the presence of insects, are important aspects in design which contribute to human productivity, health and well-being. Phantom retractable screen solutions enhance working and living spaces by preserving outside views and allowing outside air to freely circulate within a building while keeping insects at bay. Phantom can also maximize access to natural daylight: the most commonly used insect screen, 18/14 mesh, blocks up to 40% of natural daylight from entering a building. When insect protection is not required, Phantom retractable screens retract out of sight, increasing the exposure of natural light to interior spaces.
Case Study: Seniors Assisted Living Facility Concerns: Ventilation, Pest Control and Daylight Management Solution: 10 double-French Phantom Screens color matched to metal clad doors
This assisted living facility in Massachusetts needed to comply with state laws which require screens to be installed on residents’ doors that open to the outside. At the same time, the management didn’t want to sacrifice the view of the outside surroundings. The installation of Phantom door screens provides residents with access to fresh air outside while preventing insects from entering living spaces. Natural daylight to the rooms is maximized when insect protection is not required; the screens are retracted into their protective housings to restore unobstructed views from the double-French glass doors.

Sustainable Design with Phantom Screens Building considerations related to daylight management are gaining greater attention with national and state organizations to the point that governing bodies and associations either require or recommend it. Examples include California’s Title 24, the Oregon Energy Code, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) “Walk the Walk” campaign, and the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program. Phantom retractable screen solutions can be used to meet a number of these requirements. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) “Walk the Walk” program is designed to educate, promote and encourage sustainable design among consumers, business owners and architects. One of the core components of this program is ‘50 to 50’, which provides resources to architects as they move towards AIA’s goal of at least a 50% reduction of fossil fuel consumption in buildings by 2010, and carbon neutrality by 2030. The use of Phantom retractable screens may apply to the following ‘50 to 50’ categories: • • • • • • •
Daylighting Efficient Artificial and Site Lighting Natural Ventilation Open Active, Daylit Spaces Smart Controls Sunshading Windows and Openings.
Retractable screens offer solutions in a variety of the LEED-NC v3 categories as well. Credits can be earned for reduced energy use achieved by decreasing building heat gain. Phantom retractable screen solutions may assist with LEED certification project applications in the following areas: Energy and Atmosphere EA Credit 1 – Optimize Energy Performance Indoor Environment Air Quality IEQ Credit 2 – Increased Ventilation IEQ Credit 4.2 – Low-Emitting Materials: Paints and Coatings IEQ Credit 6.2 – Controllability of Systems – Thermal Comfort IEQ Credit 7.1 – Thermal Comfort – Design IEQ Credit 8.1 – Daylight and Views – Daylight IEQ Credit 8.2 – Daylight and Views – Views
