Types of Hypothesis Testing

Types of Hypothesis Testing Null Hypothesis: đ??ť0 • The null hypothesis (denoted by H0) is a statement that the value of a population parameter (such as proportion, mean, or standard deviation) is equal to some claimed value. • Must contain condition of equality: =, ď‚ł, or ď‚Ł • We test the null hypothesis directly. • Either reject H0 or fail to reject H0.

Alternative Hypothesis: đ??ťđ??´ • The alternative hypothesis (denoted by H1 or Ha or HA) is the statement that the parameter has a value that somehow differs from the null hypothesis. • The symbolic form of the alternative hypothesis must use one of these symbols: ď‚š, <, >. • Must be true if H0 is false • ‘opposite’ of Null

Types of Alternative Hypothesis: đ?‘Żđ?‘¨ Non-directional • Known as two-tailed hypothesis testing • Uses the ‘≠’ (not equal to) sign

Directional • Known as one-tailed hypothesis testing • Uses the ‘>’ (greater than) or ‘<’ (greater than) sign

Forms of 𝑯𝟎 & 𝑯𝑨 Two-tailed

𝑯𝟎 : 𝝁 = 𝝁𝟎

One-tailed 𝑯𝟎 : 𝝁 ≥ 𝝁𝟎

𝑯𝑨 : 𝝁 < 𝝁𝟎 𝑯𝟎 : 𝝁 ≤ 𝝁𝟎

𝑯𝑨 : 𝝁 ≠ 𝝁𝟎 𝑯𝑨 : 𝝁 > 𝝁𝟎

How to: State the hypotheses Null Hypothesis: H0 • Set the value of a population mean in a null hypothesis • which we presume is true

Alternative Hypothesis: HA • Test the null hypothesis is because we think it is wrong • We state what we think is wrong about the null hypothesis in an alternative hypothesis
