Dominos falling slowly on COVAX NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory Governments are all expected to announce that they will approve a limited number of rural and outer suburban pharmacies as COVID-19 vaccination (COVAX) sites in the coming weeks. The reports come just more than a week after 49 rural and regional pharmacies in Queensland joined the COVAX program. Sources have told Pharmacy Daily that 26 pharmacies in rural NSW could be given the green light to administer COVAX by Fri, while Pharmacy Guild of Australia Victorian Branch President, Anthony Tassone, confirmed 15 stores across the state have been assessed as possible locations in Victoria. The NT Government is believed to be considering two sites to begin pharmacy-based COVAX services. Tassone told Pharmacy Daily that the Guild has been in “frequent and ongoing contact with the Victorian Department of Health
and government about activating community pharmacies to deliver COVAX”. “We have been advised by the Department of Health that after undertaking an assessment of identifying areas with limited patient access to COVAX, they had identified 15 locations across the state; eight in regional areas and seven in outersuburban areas,” he said. “They are in the process of working with the Commonwealth to have the necessary vaccine stock allocation for pharmacies in these areas to onboard them hopefully in the coming weeks. “The Guild has not been advised where these locations specifically are - but expect to be informed very soon. “Whilst getting ‘some players on the field’ is a start, it is the Guild’s view that all pharmacies really should be activated immediately with over 800 pharmacies across the state [of Victoria] and almost
4,000 nationally deemed ‘suitable’ to participate in the COVAX program.” MEANWHILE, Guild National President, Trent Twomey, told the Australian Financial Review that Western Australia has also made a request to the Federal Government to have community pharmacies activated as access points for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Twomey added that coordination between State and Federal Governments needed to improve, warning, “the rollout of the COVAX strategy for the country is starting to fracture”.

API to switch to Arrotex generics GENERIC medicines provider, Arrotex Pharmaceuticals, is set to become the preferred supplier of generic medicines to Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API) pharmacy banner groups from Sep. Speaking with Pharmacy Daily, a spokesperson for API confirmed that Viatris - the company formed through the merger of Mylan and Upjohn last year - will no longer be its frontline generics supplier. While API’s Priceline Pharmacy, Soul Pattinson Chemist and Pharmacist Advice stores are all expected to switch from Viatris to Arrotex generic medications, the wholesaler has said it will continue to supply Viatris products to other pharmacy customers. “We’ve enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Viatris and we are pleased that we [will] continue to supply independent pharmacy as usual,” the spokesperson said. “API’s brands have made an independent decision to support

Arrotex as their preferred generic supplier from Sep this year for their future strategic needs.” Pharmacy Daily understands that news of API’s decision was announced to staff at Viatris late yesterday afternoon, with Arrotex expected to issue an in-house statement regarding its appointment as the wholesaler’s preferred supplier at some stage today.
Arrotex was formed in Jul 2019 following the merger of Arrow Pharmaceuticals and Apotex Australia (PD 11 Jul 2019). The move will further cement Arrotex’s status as the largest pharmaceutical company in Australia by volume, with one source describing it as a “massive shift in market share for all involved.”
PHARMACISTS across the Commonwealth are being urged to mark Commonwealth Pharmacy Day (CPD) today and share their views about why the profession is important to resilient healthcare teams. The Commonwealth Pharmacy Association is also calling for pharmacists to be authorised to administer COVID-19 vaccines to address vaccine inequity around the globe.

IT’S not often that a pharmacist tops the FBI’s priority list, but US podcast series, The Opportunist, is set to examine the life and crimes of Robert Courtney. The true crime podcast focuses on “regular people who turn sinister by embracing opportunity”, and the former Kansas City pharmacist who watered down cancer treatments certainly falls into that category. Courtney came to the attention of the FBI after nurses working for an oncologist noticed that several chemotherapy patients weren’t experiencing the normal side effects associated with the drugs. The doctor subsequently had medication supplied by Courtney tested, with results showing the sample contained less than a third of the drug prescribed. Courtney is currently serving a 30-year sentence for the fraud. Podcast creator, Kast Media, said the show would look at how “a family man, pharmacist, and well-respected member of his community” became “a cold, calculating criminal”.
