FOOTWEAR PREAMBLE/POLICY All employees must wear safe, comfortable and appropriate footwear that encloses the foot and provides protection. This policy applies to all employees, contractors, sub-contractors, volunteers and visitors. Preferred Health Care Services (PHCS), as an employer, is legally required to take every reasonable precaution to protect workers as well as inform them about any hazards on the job. Managers must inform all employees about hazards on the job, and employees must follow the policies and procedures as set out by PHCS. PROCEDURE 1. Obtaining and wearing appropriate footwear as defined by this policy is a condition of employment. 2. All employees who fail to wear the appropriate footwear are subject to disciplinary action. 3. PHCS requires the use of protective footwear to ensure that every reasonable precaution is taken to prevent accidents and protect workers as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 4. To ensure that safety standards are maintained, all employees must wear suitable and safe footwear as required by their work area and/or job performed. Definition of safe footwear: i.

Closed toe and heel.

iv. Tie-up or loafer type.

ii.

Good arch support.

v. Low or medium heel.

iii.

Puncture-proof soles.

vi. Slip resistant.

5. Managers are authorized to decide on the type of footwear that, in their opinion, meets the safety needs of their area, if they feel the above definition of safe footwear is inadequate.
