LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT WHERE DO I BEGIN? Some years are more significant than others, and that can definitely be said for 2019. While it marked the end of a decade, it also represented the culmination of Phi Delt 2020 and a banner year of achievement for the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. I’m pleased to note that in my final full year as CEO, we increased the number of donors to the Foundation by 14 percent and increased the average gift size by 5 percent: a great testament to the strength and momentum our organization has gained. Triumphs that would not have been possible without you. Thank you! It has been my great honor and pleasure to lead this Fraternity and Foundation these many years. You and the donors listed in the pages that follow, as well as many others throughout the years, have made my tenure one of humble success and for that I am so grateful. Together we have overcome hurdles and accomplished great feats. In the past year alone, we expanded our membership to over 14,000 undergraduate brothers, established It has been our footprint on seven campuses, brought our my great honor bystander intervention education to 100 percent and pleasure of our chapters, and launched the Phi Delt 2030 to lead this strategic plan. Fraternity and I hope that you will take the time to read the Foundation these stories in this report to truly see the impact you are many years. making on the lives of these young men. It is also my hope that you will review Phi Delt 2030 and continue to support this great organization for many years to come. Allow me to close with a humble thanks for all that you have allowed us to accomplish. Together we have and will continue to transmit this great fraternity not only, not less, but greater than it was transmitted to us. Thank you!

Yours in the Bond,

Robert A. Biggs, CEO 5

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS The proud brothers of Phi Delta Theta gave nearly $400,000 more to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation in 2019 than in 2018. The additional support has allowed us to launch Phi Delt 2030 on the right foot financially. These dollars contributed to the bolstering of our educational programs with important curriculum additions such as My Brothers’ Keeper and To Do What Ought to Be Done. We have also been able to provide more support to our chapters after fall recruitment, which has led to a 5 percent increase in our Phikeias retention rate. Our total undergraduate membership has also grown to the astounding number of 14,000 young men. With your continued support, our impact will be even greater in the coming year!

WHEN ASKED WHAT MADE me make my first donation to the Foundation way back in 1982, I replied that my motivation was not a what exactly but a why. Both my mother and my Fraternity taught me a simple truth: to do what ought to be done. I’ve made contributions to Phi Delta Theta over the years because our Fraternity enriched my life and, frankly, they needed my support. On April 26, 2018 I received my Golden Legion lapel pin. Fifty years, WOW! The pride and honor I felt that evening reminded me of another early spring moment, March 16, 1968 the day Louisiana Gamma 10

was granted its charter and my brothers and I signed The Bond of Phi Delta Theta and proudly wore the badge of Phi Delta Theta for the first time. Both those evenings strongly reminded me that this Fraternity is an indelible part of me and has impacted my life in so many wonderful ways. Last January, I was invited to attend the 2019 Presidents Leadership Conference as a Fellow. The quality of the conference, the soundness of the strategies to make the Fraternity the best, and the quality of the young men who are leading their chapters was truly impressive. Returning home, it struck me that being impressed wasn’t enough and that I needed to do something more tangible. Shortly thereafter I heard a preview of Phi Delt 2030 presented at a Houston alumni luncheon by COO Sean Wagner. SVP of Advancement Steve Bloomer then asked We chose if I would consider being a lead donor to support to fund Phi the plan. Full well knowing that I would, Steve Delt 2030 was given the job of convincing my wife, Elise, of because we the value that Phi Delta Theta adds to the lives of believe in wise young college men. He did that successfully which investments. led us to make our pledge official. The work that We chose to fund Phi Delt 2030 because we Phi Delta Theta believe in wise investments. The work that Phi accomplishes Delta Theta accomplishes on so many fronts is on so many truly amazing. I strongly believe in the benefits of fronts is truly Greek life and Phi Delta Theta is at the top of the amazing. heap, in my humble opinion. If you are thinking about it, take the step. You will have a great feeling of fulfillment. If you haven’t thought about it, get back in the game . . . there are so many ways that your donation will be invested wisely. —T. Scott Smith, UL Lafayette ’69

MY JOURNEY WITH PHI Delta Theta started the summer before college. I wouldn’t say I knew I was going to join a fraternity: I had never been exposed to one. But when I went to College Prep Camp that summer, several of the counselors were Phis and that got the ball rolling on my fraternal search. It’s a bit funny to look back on now because it was just us and one other fraternity on campus at that time and they showed way better than Phi Delt during recruitment. However, I learned quickly about the other fraternity’s reputation on campus and that was not something I wanted to be a part of. When I pledged Phi Delt, I didn’t think it would be such a large deal in my life. It started playing a bigger role with simple things like my brothers helping me transition to college life, and just having a “home base” that I could go to be with people I knew cared about me. We were a really small chapter with only ten guys, but it still felt like home. When one of my older brothers, Manuel Martinez, ’19, pushed me to run for treasurer, I 12

thought he was crazy! We were in so much financial trouble and it was a difficult position, but he pushed me, and I was elected. Becoming treasurer was a lot of responsibility. It honed my ability to be creative in solving problems and be professional in dealing with people. I owe a lot to what Manuel taught me: if you want something you need to go after it; deepen your connections with people; do your best academically and morally. Looking back I guess you could say he was molding my leadership skills based on what he’d learned upholding our Cardinal Principles. I attended Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in July 2019 and because I had just taken over as the president, I was also able to attend the Presidents Leadership Conference in January 2020. Between these two conferences, I’ve learned so much. At Kleberg I got on stage and spoke in front of 1,100 people: I couldn’t believe I did it even in the moment Those who because I get so nervous in big groups. Talking donate to the to that many people and having them learn from Foundation have me, gave me the confidence to lead our chapter honestly made of twenty-four to grow both as a chapter and as a big difference men. Corey Ciocchetti’s talk at PLC on inspired in my life, in our integrity and pursuing genuine happiness has chapter, and in encouraged me to do two things: ensure that I the lives of every am always acting within my values, even when Phi I’ve gotten it’s difficult or I have to go against a crowd; to meet. and always align your actions with your heart and desired priorities. He instilled in us that doing these two things will lead us to lives of longterm sustained happiness. Attending these conferences and learning from brothers across the country (and Canada!) has grown my professional skills and confidence immensely. If you only read one part of my story, please read this: those who donate to the Foundation have honestly made a big difference in my life, in our chapter, and in the lives of every Phi I’ve gotten to meet. Thank you for who you have helped me become.

WE ARE PHI DELT! EACH SUMMER FOR THE past thirty-two years, hundreds of Phis travel to Oxford to learn valuable lessons about leadership, life, and brotherhood. With average attendance around 1,000 annually, we only touch a small portion of our expansive group. With the hope of expanding that, we launched the “We are Phi Delt Days of Giving. The days had two goals: the first was to showcase the great work done by staff, volunteers, and donors at the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute; the second was to compel those who might not know about that work to make a contribution to the Foundation. By the end of the giving days, we had live-streamed forteen different videos showcasing many aspects of attending Kleberg and raised $68,000 for program support from nearly 900 donors. To everyone who participated in the giving days by donating, sharing, or attending, thank you for all that you do! We look forward to continuing to expand our reach and educating all Phis on the great leadership education that our youngest members, our students, are exposed to.

JOIN THE 1848 SOCIETY I used to be a loyal donor to Phi Delt, but then with family and work, life got busy. When Phi Delt established Making the 1848 Society for recurring donors, I wanted gifts monthly fit to sign up immediately! I knew that making in better with gifts monthly fit in better with my lifestyle, it’s my lifestyle, it’s just like Netflix, I don’t have to think about just like Netflix, making the gift: it just happens automatically. I don’t have My monthly gifts allow me to have a greater to think about impact on Phi Delta Theta. The challenge with in-person meetings is the expense, my gifts support the continuation of these meetings by offsetting the costs.

Thomas A. Balzer, North Dakota ’99 The 1848 Society recognizes those who choose to ensure their commitment to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation through automatic monthly giving. Donors can join the society by signing up online at www.phideltatheta.org/donate or calling Ann Foust at 513-523-6345.

IN 2016, I PLEDGED Phi Delta Theta because I wanted to be a part of something that could be my home base, and to be a member of an organization that could always give me pride. I was looking for a leadership-based organization that could help me grow, while also making a difference and leaving my mark. Last year I took over as president, and now more than ever I understand what it means to pay it forward. I have grown in more ways than I could imagine from this experience and one piece that really sticks out in my growth is something I learned at the Presidents Leadership Conference: accountability. 28

Not only holding myself accountable for being a greater version of myself, but also ensuring that I am instilling that same expectation in my brothers and those around me. I want to leave my mark on my chapter by sharing my experiences and knowledge with potential leaders, establishing myself as a type of safeguard that is always present for my brothers and by pushing our guys to be better. I’m proud to say that our chapter was The awarded Gold Star status and we have become and scholarship Iron Phi Chapter this past year: we consider these assistance new traditions! The scholarship assistance I’ve received from General Headquarters has enabled me to take the time to focus on my studies. I’m so grateful for the donors who provided me with this opportunity and I’m excited to pay it forward as an alumnus. Thank you for pushing me to continue to be the greatest version of myself. I feel very blessed to have created lifelong bonds with my brothers.
