Episcopal Church votes to allow same-sex blessing, transgender clergy By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com The Episcopal Church this week approved an official prayer service to be used at samesex unions. During its General Convention in Indianapolis Monday, church leaders voted in favor of a provisional liturgy designed specifically for same-sex relationships, making the Episcopal Church the largest Christian denomination in the United States to offer a same-sex union rite. The church still defines marriage as between one man and one woman. The resolution was accepted by the House of Bishops in a 111-41 vote Monday and the following night, the House of Deputies, comprised of both clergy and lay people, PAGE 16 also gave its consent.

Both sides in the fight for marriage equality have requested the nation’s top court weigh in on two cases regarding the federal ban on same-sex marriage. Last week the U.S. Department of Justice and the Congressional body that is backing the Defense of Marriage Act both petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hear two cases in which DOMA was recently ruled to be unconstitutional. The Supreme Court will decide whether to accept the cases when it begins its new term this fall. In Golinski v. Office of Personnel Management, a federal judge in California in February ruled that DOMA was unconstitutional in its applicability to the plaintiff, a federal employee who was denied health benefits for her same-sex spouse because of DOMA. Oral arguments are scheduled

before an appeals court in September, but the Supreme Court intervention would halt that process. Tara Borelli, staff attorney at Lambda Legal, which is representing Golinksi, said the recent developments highlight “the desire by all, the government included, to resolve this issue quickly.” “It is clear to us, to the Solicitor General and to the Department of Justice that DOMA’s days are numbered,” Borelli said, noting that the last four courts to consider the constitutionality of Section 3 of DOMA — which limits the definition of marriage to one man and one woman — found that portion unconstitutional. “There are loving, married same-sex couples and grieving lesbian and gay widows and widowers around the country who are being hurt by the government’s actions. Every one of their stories demonstrates that DOMA is an unfair and discriminatory law that violates the Constitution.” PAGE 18

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is one of just a handful of DA offices in the nation to participate in a project designed to enhance the quality of service provided to LGBT crime victims. Late last month, more than two-dozen DA staffers took part in a training meeting that introduced them to the unique issues LGBT victims face, a session that marked the initial phase of what will be a three-year diversity effort. Early this year, the office applied for and was accepted into the LGBTQ Crime Victim Services Project, a joint effort being staged by the federal Office for Victims of Crime and the Beyond Diversity Resource Center. Seven other victim-services agencies in the nation were selected for the initiative. Researchers from Rutgers University are collaborating to analyze data collected from each agency and the results of the project. Nellie Fitzpatrick, LGBT liaison for the DA’s Office, explained that the initiative will focus on the office’s Victims Services Unit. Last month’s training was attended by all of the unit’s victim-witness coordinators, about 25 people in total. “When someone is a victim of a crime, these are the people who are your first point of contact,” Fitzpatrick said. “The meeting was very baseline, basic 101, on the terms we’re working with and an introduction to the issues we’re going to be discussing in the next few years.” Fitzpatrick said attendees got the chance to take part in a series of interactive activities that exposed them to the realities of living as an LGBT person. “When you’re not a member of the community, it may be difficult for people to recognize and see what LGBTQ people go through on a day-to-day basis,” she said. “This was a good chance PAGE 18

Reading Pride returns with new party By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com Up to 2,000 people are expected to turn out for the sixth annual Pride festival in Reading this weekend, which will feature a new event designed to kick off a weekend of LGBT pride. The Reading Pride Celebration will run noon-6 p.m. July 15 at Centre Park and feature live music and entertainment, food and drinks and a wealth of vendors. From 9 p.m.-1 a.m. July 13, Pride supporters will gather for a Pre-Pride Party at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Wyomissing. The new event will include music by lesbian band Fierce and DJ Journey. The party is 18 to enter and 21 to drink, and the $5 cover benefits RPC. Sunday’s festival will feature music by Philadelphia Freedom Band and Darkes Band as well as dance numbers by Reading High School’s dance team, Dramatic Influence and Latin Flair. Entertainers from Genesius Theater will also take the stage, as will area drag performers, such as Miss Reading Pride Celebration 2012 Whitley Nycole DeAire.

RPC secretary Tadd Casner said the event typically brings in a mixed group from throughout the region. “The crowd is very diverse, and the event is family-friendly,” Casner said. “Young, old, LGBT, straight — it’s a great mix of people.” Last year’s festival included more than 75 vendors. Casner said a big draw is also the admission price: just $4. The park is bordered by Reading’s Historic District, considered the area’s Gayborhood, which Casner said is filled with picturesque Victorian mansions — a significant change of scenery from urban summer Pride events. “Our event is in a beautiful neighborhood in the shade of the park,” he said. “We’ve actually had past attendees from Philadelphia attend and they told us we were the best Pride they had ever been to.” Following the festivities, guests are invited to an after-party at Stokesay Castle with music by DJ Evelyn. PA sheriff arrested for threats against ex-partner By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com A lesbian sheriff from Northeastern Pennsylvania was arrested last week after allegedly threatening to kill her former partner. Police arrested Mary Jean Farrell, 51, June 29 for harassment and making terroristic threats, charges that allegedly stemmed from an ongoing custody battle. Farrell has been on disability leave from her position as a deputy sheriff in Luzerne County since October 2010. Farrell’s former girlfriend, Jenipher Johnson, contacted police June 29 to report that Farrell made telephone death threats that morning. Johnson told police that the night before, Farrell slowly drove past her house several times around midnight, hours after a nearphysical altercation between Farrell and Johnson’s current partner. Johnson and Farrell have been involved

in a five-year custody battle for their two children, ages 14 and 12. Johnson is the biological mother. Johnson said she and her partner were met by Farrell at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport last Thursday afternoon, upon their return from a doctor’s appointment in Wyoming for Johnson’s son, who suffers from cystic fibrosis. Johnson told police that Farrell attempted to assault her partner at the airport. Following the arrest, both women have filed restraining orders against one another. Farrell was released after posting $1,000 bail. Farrell is out on disability under the state’s Heart and Lung Act, which allows law-enforcement officers unlimited amount of paid time to recuperate from an injury suffered while on the job. Luzerne County Sheriff Jack Robshaw has said he will launch an investigation into the arrest to determine if disciplinary action is warranted. ■

As gays serve openly, few problems for chaplains By David Crary The Associated Press WRIGHTSTOWN, N.J. — Col. Timothy Wagoner has been an Air Force chaplain for 20 years, serving a denomination — the Southern Baptists — that rejects same-sex relationships. Yet here he was at the chapel he oversees, watching supportively as an airman and his male partner celebrated a civil-union ceremony. “I wouldn’t miss it,” Wagoner said at the McGuire Air Force Base chapel, days later. “I don’t feel I’m compromising my beliefs ... I’m supporting the community.” Wagoner didn’t officiate at the ceremony — he couldn’t go quite that far. But his very presence at the gathering was a marker of how things have changed for active-duty clergy in the nine months since the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was repealed and gays could serve openly. Prior to repeal, various conservative groups and individuals — including many conservative retired chaplains — warned that repeal would trigger an exodus of chaplains whose faiths consider homosexual activity to be sinful. In fact, there’s been no significant exodus — perhaps two or three departures of active-duty chaplains linked to the repeal. Moreover, chaplains or their civilian coordinators from a range of conservative faiths told The Associated Press they knew of virtually no serious problems thus far involving infringement of

chaplains’ religious freedom or rights of conscience. “To say the dust has settled would be premature,” said Air Force Col. Gary Linsky, a Roman Catholic priest who oversees 50 fellow chaplains in the Air Mobility Command. “But I’ve received no complaints from chaplains raising concerns that their ministries were in any way conflicted or constrained.” Wagoner, who commands five other chaplains at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in central New Jersey, said the chaplaincy corps was responding professionally and collegially to what he called a “balancing act” precipitated by the repeal. “We’re good at this stuff — we want to take care of our folks,” he said. “We have to respect the faith requirements of the chaplain and we have to take care of the needs of the airman.” That attitude meshes with the official Pentagon guidelines on the repeal: “The Chaplain Corps’ First Amendment freedoms and their duty to care for all have not changed. All service members will continue to serve with others who may hold different views and beliefs, and they will be expected to treat everyone with respect.” Wagoner would not have been willing to officiate at the June 23 civil-union ceremony at the McGuire chapel, nor would his Catholic or Mormon colleagues. But he had no problem with another member of his team, Navy Chaplain Kay Reeb of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, doing so. Reeb, who will be leaving the PAGE 19

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Supporters of gay marriage in Washington state said Monday that they raised more than $952,000 last month for the campaign to uphold the state’s new law, which is currently on hold pending the outcome of a November ballot measure. The announcement by Washington United for Marriage comes a day before a deadline for initiative campaigns to file their monthly campaign finance reports with the state Public Disclosure Commission. “We want to continue this incredible momentum and ride this wave throughout summer to be competitive in the fall,” said Zach Silk, campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage. Silk said his group expects to see a fundraising spike by its opponents later in the fall. “We can’t take anything for granted,” he said. Among the donations were $100,000 each from Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer and co-founder Bill Gates. Referendum 74 was certified for the ballot last month after gay-marriage opponents turned in more than 240,000 signatures, far more than the minimum requirement of 120,577 valid voter signatures. The referendum seeks to overturn the law passed earlier this year allowing same-sex marriage in the state. That law was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire in February. The law was supposed to take effect June 7 but was put on hold once the signatures were turned in. R-74 asks

voters to either vote “yes” to uphold the law or “no” to overturn it. As of Monday, Washington United for Marriage said it had raised more than $2 million for the campaign to fight back attempts to overturn the law. Preserve Marriage Washington, which collected the signatures to get R-74 on the ballot, has raised more than $135,000, according to the most recent numbers with the Public Disclosure Commission, though it hadn’t yet submitted totals for June. T h e Wa s h i n g t o n , D . C . - b a s e d N a t i o n a l Organization for Marriage, which was involved in ballot measures that overturned same-sex marriage in California and Maine, has said it will fight to strike down the law, and has loaned regional coordinator Christopher Plante to the local campaign. “We expect to be outspent on this,” said Plante, who is now serving as deputy campaign manager for Preserve Marriage. “As the campaign goes on, sufficient funds will come to get this done and voters will bring us the rest of the way there.” Plante said organizers ultimately hope to raise about $4 million. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Maryland legalized gay marriage this year as well, but that state is also poised to have a public vote this fall. In Maine, voters will decide on an initiative to approve same-sex marriage three years after a referendum overturned a law passed by the Maine Legislature. And in Minnesota, voters will decide whether to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. ■

News Briefing Restraining order requested in Paige case Attorneys for James Harris, who was awarded $165,000 last month after alleging that a Philadelphia police officer sexually assaulted him, want the officer’s assets temporarily frozen while attempts are made to collect on the judgment. Harris contends that Officer Michael Paige forced him to repeatedly perform oral sex on him while on duty at a secluded area of Fairmount Park on March 16, 2007. Paige denies the allegations and was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in 2008. But a federal jury last month awarded Harris $165,000 in civil damages. Harris wants to collect on that judgment, but his attorneys are concerned that Paige may try to transfer or conceal his assets if they’re not frozen. In a June 29 motion, attorneys for Harris requested a temporary restraining order, preventing Harris from substantially altering his assets in the interim. U.S. District Judge Robert F. Kelly set a hearing date for 9:30 a.m. July 13 in Courtroom 11B of the U.S. Courthouse to consider the motion. Attorneys for Harris also want a complete listing of Paige’s assets. Paige may have to pay Harris about $500,000 — including the existing judgment, pre- and post-judgment interest, attorneys fees and costs, and fees incurred while trying to secure the money from Paige, according to the motion. Attorneys for both sides declined to comment for this story.

Trans employment case moves forward A federal judge has cleared the way for transwoman Bobbie Burnett’s employment-discrimination case to move to the discovery phase of litigation. Burnett, 56, is employed by the city as a library assistant, earning about $30,299 annually. In 2009, Burnett sued the city and four coworkers for allegedly violating her constitutional rights and creating a hostile work environment due to her transgender status. She alleges ongoing workplace harassment and discrimination dating back to 2001, shortly after she transitioned to the opposite gender. In November 2010, city attorneys asked U.S. District Judge C. Darnell Jones 2d to

dismiss most of Burnett’s amended complaint on the basis that it lacked merit. On June 25, the judge denied that request, clearing the way for the discovery phase of litigation. Burnett’s allegations run the gamut, from being hassled about the restroom she could use to being denied work-related courtesies routinely offered to others to having denigrating slurs hurled at her from coworkers and supervisors. In one incident, when she wished a coworker a nice weekend, he responded by saying, “Burn in hell,” according to the lawsuit. She has been transferred to eight different work sites in six years, according to the suit. Additionally, she alleges, she’s been harmed due to unreasonable disciplinary actions, a lack of promotional opportunities and an inability to earn the maximum income available to library assistants. The lawsuit alleges constitutional violations of right to due process, equal protection under the law, freedom of expression and other rights. She also alleges that four of her coworkers intentionally inflicted emotional distress upon her. Burnett is seeking an unspecified amount in compensatory and punitive damages. Burnett’s attorney, John W. Beavers Jr., expressed confidence that she will prevail at trial. “The jury would have to be asleep to think there was no wrongdoing here,” Beavers told PGN. Shant H. Zakarian, an attorney for the city, declined to comment for this story. Sandra A. Horrocks, a Free Library of Philadelphia spokesperson, also declined to comment, citing the pending litigation. — Timothy Cwiek

Lynn denied house arrest A judge last week ruled that Monsignor William Lynn must stay in prison until his next court date, denying his petition to be placed on house arrest. The former Archdiocesan official was convicted of child endangerment last month, making him the first high-ranking Catholic official in the country to be found criminally liable for covering up alleged sexual abuse within the ministry. Common Pleas Court Judge Teresa Sarmina agreed with prosecutors last Thursday that Lynn could be a flight risk if he’s released from prison, where he has been since the June 22 verdict. Defense attorneys proposed that Lynn’s bail be doubled and he be placed on house arrest, but prosecutors contended that, in addition to the risk of flight, the release would amount to special treatment for the cleric. At a previous bail hearing, Sarmina gave preliminary consent to a house-arrest agreement but said it could not be imple-

mented until Lynn’s sentencing hearing. That proceeding had been scheduled for August but Sarmina agreed last week to move it up to July 24. Lynn could face seven years in prison. The Archdiocese last week announced that two more priests have been dismissed from the ministry for violating boundaries, while four other priests will return to ministry after allegations against them were found to be unsubstantiated. A multi-disciplinary Archdiocesan team has been evaluating the cases of severaldozen priests placed on administrative leave following a 2010 grand-jury investigation — which resulted in the indictiments of Lynn and his co-defendant, James Brennan. A number of cases remain open.

Group launches for Delco gays Gay men in Delaware County will soon have a new outlet for support and socializing. Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County will launch Delco Dudes starting Sept. 5, with meetings held from 7-9 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at the church, in Media. While the nondenominational group, headed by the church’s Interweave Committee, will be geared toward gay men, anyone over 18 is welcome. Lesbian seat at the table This week, a group of women launched the Lesbian Political Action Committee, aka LPAC — the first of its kind. Started by Chicago Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts, who is also co-chair of the Democratic National Committee’s LGBT Leadership Council, and petroleum heiress Sarah Schmidt, along with several communications and LGBT-rights activists such as Urvashi Vaid and Alix Ritchie, the group seeks to raise money to advocate for LGBT rights, reproductive freedom and quality health care and to work for social, racial and economic justice by electing pro-women candidates to office. The group is unique in its efforts. Certainly, lesbians have allies among gay male and women’s-rights advocacy groups, but only lesbians sit at this particular intersection. And while other groups cover some of its issues — namely, The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund for LGBTs and EMILY’s List for women — they don’t embody the issues the same way. While one can fight for another’s rights, it’s different when they are your own. One can be passionate about justice for a minority group, but it hits home when you are that minority group, perhaps in more ways than one (or two). In the larger-issues arenas in which lesbians traditionally exist, they are often minorities. LGBT fundraisers and receptions are routinely dominated by gay men — particularly the big-money political events. By sheer numbers, lesbians make up a smaller portion of women’s-rights efforts, and aren’t always included in the issues conversations, even if they are impacted by the topic at hand. Among the group’s supporters are actor Jane Lynch and tennis legend Billie Jean King. In a press release, Lynch stated, “This year we have seen politicians repeatedly support policies that harm women. It is important to me to elect leaders who care about issues that impact women and their families.” For her part, King stated, “The formation of LPAC provides lesbians and the entire LGBT community a new, stronger voice and a real and respected seat at the table when politicians make policy that impacts our lives.” The connecting thread throughout is the group’s intention to have a “seat at the table” in federal, state and local politics. This new PAC, not constrained by contribution limits, will give directly to candidates and won’t be restricted on the basis of political party, sexual orientation or gender identity. According to an Associated Press article, LPAC’s fundraising goal for 2012 is $1 million, but Schmidt noted there was “no downside here” whether LPAC brings in $500,000 or $5 million. “If it raises $500,000, we still have raised $500,000 for critical races, and it’s being raised from lesbian leaders whose voices may not have been heard before.” Here, here. ■

The zombie apocalypse is coming. Or, more specifically, the ex-gay zombie apocalypse. In Lou Engle’s dreams at least. Literally. Speaking recently to a group of teen and young-adult antigay Christians, Engle, founder of The Call, a ministry for young people, shared his fever-dream/psychotic fantasy. I should mention that Engle has the perfect voice to be a World Wrestling Entertainment’s Smack Down announcer, which makes his antigay rants sound all the more over the top. “[Bob Jones] had a vision in 1989 of a first wave of homosexuals coming to Christ. One-hundred thousand would be just the first wave, and it would come suddenly. I dreamed of this before,” he told the enthusiastic audience. Now, we all know who Bob Jones is, right? Of Bob Jones University fame? Where you can basically get a diploma in gay-bashing? So to be clear, Jones had a vision and then Engle had a dream of this vision. Far out, man. In this vision/ dream/fantasy, Engle sees this army of gays and lesbians, converted by God to be “normal,” like, you know, him, and that these people would “begin to be the preachers of righteousness in their own communities with radical salvations and healings of AIDS.” The young audience likes this idea very much. They cheer. Because we all know how much conservatives love outsourcing. Engle continues, “This is the issue of your day. You know it. Something goes off in your heart when you touch this one. Because this is the heart of God.” Really? Of all the issues facing young people in this country, “fixing” gay people is really priority No. 1? I mean, if you ask yourself “What would Jesus do?” I don’t think Jesus would be all, “Screw the poor, let’s straighten out some queers.” “Would you raise your voices and begin to pray?” Engle urges, “God give us 100,000 gay and lesbian men and women

to be radically transformed! Begin to pray it in your youth groups. Begin to pray it in your schools, pray it in your devotions. We’re asking God! Loose a movement — a divine breakthrough! One hundred thousand gay and lesbian men and women! Loose a sound that D.C. can’t contend with! Loose a sound that the media can’t contend with! Overflow the media with the sound of revival.” Unfortunately, I don’t think Engle has thought this one through. It’s a very impractical plan. First of all, there’s the whole ex-gay thing and how that doesn’t actually work. Even the “ex-gay” group Exodus International disavows the concept, saying, basically, that you can’t scrub or pray the gay away, but you can be celibate. Which is not the same thing. Hence the zombie reference. And if all it took was a bunch of antigay Christians to pray their hardest to make homos un-homo, then this bastion of “cured” zombies would already be roaming the streets curing AIDS and stuff. The crowd listening to Engle’s message is a big one, and enthusiastic to boot. They literally rock back and forth, trembling with enthusiasm. It’s, well, kind of weird. As a commenter on YouTube put it, “Why are the people in the audience and background bobbing and weaving like that, do they all have some kind of inner-ear problems? I would think that they’d want to heal their balance issues before rushing off and trying to tackle AIDS.” In other words, glass houses? Stones, anyone? ■

secretly strive to become. But this character isn’t destiny; its realness can easily dwindle to a shade in the back of our minds. This happens quite a lot with poz folk in that they slave for virtue to depart from inferiority (stigma), but only to achieve mediocrity. What’s profoundly ironic about these soldiers of strife is that they, given their dogged perseverance, have probably accrued immense intrinsic wealth. But this wealth has been stashed in a vault with a lock to which they haven’t a key. And where’s the key? In the hands of others: the loved others; the divine others; the dead others; the hated others. And what happens to the key? It gnarls and rusts into a useless clump of metal. So why not take the key back? Because we think the key is no longer ours to have. That pursuit of virtue can make you a dull boy. But truly virtuous people actually understand that there are as many paths as there are characters (in the theatrical sense) of virtue. And the ones that bear true happiness (whatever that is) are laden in glaring, indelible imperfections — ones that can be scrutinized far and wide. Unshackle the weights and be absurd. Sacrifice conventional methods for per-

sonal development for things that a righteous person would condemn. Don the consequences of mistakes and turn them into ballroom gowns that make most shudder, and some wonder. HIV makes us feel othered. Embrace it; don’t shoulder it like a sack of potatoes. Having HIV doesn’t just teach compassion: It blasts the boulder sealing the tomb to childhood dreams, where more than likely you’ll find the shade of your roguish character. It may be no more than skin and bones when you find it, but it will bear a visage of contentment, as if it has been but a moment since you last beheld one another. We’re all in this together, folks. A third of gay and trans Canadians married A Canadian poll has suggested that 5 percent of the 34million people living in Canada identify as LGBT, and that a third of those are in a gay marriage. The Forum Research poll was commissioned by the National Post and conducted last month. Its 5-percent figure contrasts with the 2 percent found by the government’s official body, Statistics Canada, in 2009. The National Post noted that respondents could have been wary of divulging information to the government survey. Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, said: “Social scientists have never been able to pin down how many Canadians are LGBT, but we believe this is the best estimate to date. “This is something people want to know; they’re curious. And now is the time to measure it: People are less reluctant to answer the question, so we can actually ask it.” Ten percent of Canadians aged 18-34 identified themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender compared with only 2 percent of those over 65. The new survey finds widespread support for marriage equality between gay and straight couples, which became legal in Canada in 2005. The National Post pointed out that lower-income Canadians were less likely to know an LGBT person or a person in a same-sex marriage. They were the least likely group to support same-sex marriage, but the most likely to be LGBT themselves. Support for marriage equality was lowest in the midCanadian provinces and highest in the younger demographics. Sixty-eight percent of 18-34-year-olds supported marriage equality while 75 percent of 35-44-year-olds were in favor. Two percent of 18-34-year-olds said they were in a gay union while only .6 percent of 34-44-year-olds were.

Politically, Conservatives were the least likely to support the law (46 percent), while Greens were the most likely (85 percent). Women were more likely to say they were in a gay marriage, to say they had a family member in a gay marriage and to support the law on gay marriages than men. Same-sex marriages were most popular among the youngest and oldest age groups. Of 18-34 year olds, 2.9 percent were in a same-sex marriage; 2.4 percent of those 65 or older were in a same-sex marriage. Forum Research used the Interactive Voice Response system to take responses. The IVR machine called 2,694 people at random, asking them yes/no questions they could answer with their telephone keypad.

Eight gay activists arrested in St. Petersburg Russian police have broken up attempts to hold two gayrights rallies in St. Petersburg, which adopted a law this past spring against spreading “homosexual propaganda.” Three rally organizers were arrested last Saturday at a park in Russia’s second city, and five others were detained at a later rally attempt near the landmark Smolny complex, Russian news agencies reported. Only six people showed up for the second rally, and the three arrested at the first attempt were the only participants. Although homosexuality was decriminalized after the fall of the Soviet Union, disdain for gays remains strong in Russia. Some rally attempts have resulted in violence by opponents. St. Petersburg passed a law in February calling for fines of up to 500,000 rubles ($15,000) for spreading “homosexual propaganda.’”

China lifts ban on lesbians donating blood Lesbians in China can now legally give blood — although the ban on sexually active gay and bisexual men remains. The Ministry of Health announced last week that the ban on lesbians donating blood would be lifted immediately. State media suggested that celibate gay men would also be able to donate blood, as the wording of the law does not mention homosexual identity. Instead, it says men who

have sex with men cannot donate. The blanket ban came into force in 1998, after fears of HIV transmission. Despite the statistically low risk of lesbians testing HIV-positive, all gay people were barred from donating. In 2009, lesbians began a petition campaign to change the law.

Thousands march at incident-free Budapest Pride Budapest Pride 2012 took place safely on July 7 despite earlier threats and the mayor’s unwillingness to support the event. Over 3,000 marchers took to the streets protected by riot police. According to organizer Szilvia Nagy, it was the most popular Pride so far in the city. The procession included human-rights organizations, ambassadors, opposition politicians and members of the European Parliament, and took place safely thanks to heavy police protection. Before the Pride, far-right groups had made violent threats, publishing the names and Facebook profiles of EuroGames organizers, as well as hotels where LGBT athletes stayed for the event. Budapest Mayor István Tarlós had replied to a letter regarding Pride safety by members of the European Parliament, saying, “Becoming absorbed in this subject matter would [not] indicate a measure of intellect.” At the march, LGBT Intergroup vice president Sophie in’t Veld said, “This year’s Budapest Pride was a great celebration, and the police did a good job in providing protection in a calm and professional manner. However, politicians would contribute more to security by ending the climate of homophobia, so that massive police protection is no longer needed. The mayor of Budapest should consider marketing for his city: rampant homophobia, or an open, tolerant approach to diversity.”

nized in their true gender must have sex-reassignment surgery, a requirement campaigners say is unnecessary and inhumane. It is also out of step with national laws, which allow passport identity changes without surgery. The ACT Law Reform Advisory Council has released a report with a range of recommendations to improve trans rights. Along with the removal of the surgery requirement, the proposed changes will protect trans and intersex people from discrimination arising from mismatching identity documents — such as having passports and driving licenses that show different names and genders. Peter Hyndal, of support group A Gender Agenda, said the proposals to remove the surgery requirement were welcome but overdue. “It’s been a really, really long time since the issue was flagged and it would be nice to see the government move quickly,” he said. “The surgical requirement as it stands is clearly a complete contravention of the human rights of sex and gender-diverse people in the ACT.” Attorney general Simon Corbell called the report “a valuable insight” and said the ACT government would consider the recommendations as soon as possible.

Ireland: 734 civil partnerships in first year Almost 1,500 gays and lesbians in Ireland have taken advantage of the country’s new civil-partnerships law, which came into force in 2011. According to research by the Irish Examiner, gay civil partnerships make up 2.6 percent of registered relationships in the country. Of the 734 couples who entered civil partnerships, 448 were gay men and 286 were lesbian. Fifty percent of the unions have taken place in Dublin, but every county in the country, which has a population of 4.4 million, has had at least one gay partnership. Ireland’s civil partnership laws came into force in January 2011, with the first two ceremonies taking place in exceptional circumstances due to the participants’ ill health shortly afterward. The provisions came into effect for gays and lesbians generally in April. Moninne Griffith, director of Marriage Equality, said, “That is wonderful. It tallies with the research we have done over recent months and shows that the days are gone when LGBT people felt they had to leave for London or New York to be accepted.” Earlier this month, the Deputy Prime Minister (Tanaiste) of Ireland, Eamon Gilmore, told Dublin Pride that the law should be changed to allow same-sex couples the same rights to marry as opposite-sex couples. Gilmore, who is the leader of the Irish Labor Party and serves as Deputy Prime Minister in a coalition government, said that politicians should no longer dictate who people fall in love with or who they decide to spend their lives with. “I believe in gay marriage,” he said. “The right of gay couples to marry is, quite simply, the civil-rights issue of this generation and, in my opinion, its time has come.” Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has echoed the Deputy Prime Minister’s support for equal marriage, saying: “I believe individuals should be able to get on with their lives freely, where their circumstances don’t detrimentally impact on others.” Kieran Rose, chair of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network in Ireland, said: “Civil partnerships have been a resounding success. Almost 1,500 people have entered civil partnerships in Ireland since they became available just over a year ago. The “Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant” includes the trading of vows and rings — or blessing of rings that have already been exchanged — and each person’s promise that they will remain “bound to one another in a holy covenant, as long as they both shall live.” The prayer is similar to that used by opposite-sex couples yet without words such as “marriage,” “husband” or “wife.” Congregations would need permission from the bishop to use the prayer. The resolution authorized the liturgy for provisional use beginning Dec. 2 and called for the church to review the blessing over the next three years, before the next General Convention. Congregations in states that have sanctioned same-sex marriage may currently offer a same-sex blessing, but this week’s measure �� streamlines that process. The resolution stipulates that clergy who �� refuse to officiate a same-sex blessing cannot be penalized. Also at the convention, the �� governing bodies amended the �� church’s nondiscrimination policy by adding “gender identity and �� expression,” facilitating the process for transgender church mem�� bers to become clergy. The Rt. Rev. Charles Bennison, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese � �� of Pennsylvania, told PGN that there were quite a few tears when � its �� the House of Deputies gave final approval to the same-sex rite Tuesday. About 78 percent�� of laity and 76 percent of clergy in that chamber voted for the measure. Bennison, a proponent of the measure, was on the committee that initially recommended its adoption Monday. The committee held a hearing over the weekend, and Bennison said he had been worried that opponents would turn out in force, but that never came to fruition. �� “It was really a non-event,” he said. “The room was only maybe �� a third filled, and after about an hour of people going back and �� forth with pros and cons, we switched to a different format and a lot of people went home, bored. That’s what we’re seeing in terms of polling on this issue in the country; most people have moved on �� in terms of their passion around social issues.” �� Within the Pennsylvania diocese, Bennison said he has traditionally requested that clergy who have been asked to officiate a same�� sex union notify him. He said he asks the clergy to perform the �� same level of pre-counseling that is given to heterosexual couples �� and to ensure that the couple is�� prepared to enter into the union. He has given his �� consent to�� each of the handful of same-sex unions that has been�� presented to him in his 14-year tenure as bishop, except for�� one — which he asked to be delayed a few �� months. “It would�� have come right on the eve of the 2006 General Convention�� and it could have been very controversial because at the previous convention we’d approved the consecration of Gene Robinson, the first partnered gay bishop,” Bennison said. “I was considered a fairly progressive member and was being watched pretty closely by the conservatives, so we thought if my diocese had what people would perceive to be a gay marriage right before the convention, it could become a cause célèbre for conservatives. So we asked the couple to wait a few months, and they were fine �� with that.” The progress made at this�� week’s convention signals a new�� era in the church, Bennison said. �� “I’ve been ordained for 44 years �� and have been Episcopal all my life, and the Episcopal Church today is an amazingly inclusive �� community, much more so now than in the past,” he said. “In terms of the trajectory of where we’re going, we’re a community that �� embraces all persons, and is accepting of them as they are. We’re not asking people to be something God did not make them to be.” �� The Episcopal actions come weeks after pro-gay measures were rejected by both the Presbyterian and Methodist churches. �� At its convention in Pittsburgh this month, the Presbyterian General Assembly narrowly voted against changing the church’s definition of marriage from the man-woman model to a “covenant between two people.” The measure failed in a 338-308 vote. �� In May, United Methodist Church leaders voted against revising �� the church’s stance on homosexuality being “incompatible” with Christian teaching and cancelled two votes on the ordination of gay clergy and the creation of a same-sex-union blessing. ■

NY court: Gay marriage caucus didn’t break rules ABC News reports that a state appeals court has ruled against a challenge to New York’s year-old same-sex marriage law. The Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court in Rochester ruled against gay-marriage opponents who argued that state senators violated New York’s open-meeting rules ahead of the law’s passage on June 24, 2011. The law was given final legislative approval by the state Senate after weeks of lobbying and swiftly signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms claimed Cuomo and another gay-marriage supporter, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, met behind closed doors with the Senate’s Republican majority in violation of the law. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman argued the openmeetings law did not apply in the case of the Republican caucus meeting with invited guests.

CA bill would allow multiple parents The San Francisco Chronicle reports California children could have more than two legal parents if a bill speeding through the Legislature becomes law. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), would allow judges to recognize multiple parents in cases where children would be best served by several parental relationships. All parents would still have to meet existing standards for legal parenthood. Leno has characterized the bill as a response to America’s evolving families. Married couples dropped below half of all American households for the first time in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. Several other states, including Pennsylvania and Maine, recognize more than two parents. Supporters cited several examples where the law could be applied, including a lesbian couple that conceived a child with the help of a sperm donor who has

R&B star comes out as bisexual The Washington Post reports that R&B star Frank Ocean has revealed his first love was a man. The singer wrote in a December 2011 letter, which was not published until recently: “Four summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19. He was too. We spent that summer and the summer after together. Two arrested in Dallas gay-marriage protest KEYE-TV reports two men have been arrested after they were denied a marriage license by the Dallas County clerk and launched a protest. Mark Jiminez and Beau Chandler say they were protesting Texas’ ban on gay marriage, passed in 2005. The two men went to the clerk’s office to file for a marriage license they knew they wouldn’t receive. When they were denied, Jiminez and Chandler sat down and handcuffed their arms together. They were eventually led out by Dallas sheriff’s deputies. Chandler applied July 5 to change his legal last name to Jiminez, even though they weren’t married. for them to walk in the shoes of someone else for a day.” The meeting was led by Beyond Diversity Resource Center executive director Robin Parker and training director Pamela Smith Chambers. As part of the project, the office formed a Change Team, which will be responsible for disseminating the tenets of the initiative throughout the office and for garnering input and suggestions from office members. About a dozen staffers comprise the team — a representative from each of the office’s prosecution zones, as well as leaders from the law department, human resources and Public Nuisance Taskforce. “We wanted to get all people involved, even those who typically wouldn’t interact with victims on a day-to-day basis,” Fitzpatrick said. “We want the way that LGBTQ victims are handled to be a complete officewide change, so we wanted everyone who works here to be on the same page.” According to the program guidelines, next month office staff will be asked to submit an internal assessment of its LGBT readiness, and the Change Team will take part in a webinar on organizational changes, before the office begins rolling out its

The representatives argued that DOMA’s Section 3 is unconstitutional and that cases involving potential discrimination against gays and lesbians deserve a heightened-scrutiny review process. The brief underscored the notion that the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, which stepped in to defend DOMA after the Obama administration declined, does not represent the views of all House members. DOJ also asked the Supreme Court to review Gill v. OPM/ Massachusetts v. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a merged case in which both a federal judge and an appellate court found DOMA unconstitutional. Late last week, the BLAG petitioned the Supreme Court to review Gill.

The final year will include a number of assessment tools and the development of a long-range diversity plan. Fitzpatrick said she expects the office’s participation in the project to result in an eventual wideranging shift in understanding of and approach to LGBT victims. “My immediate goal is that the entire office will have a good knowledge of what is happening in the LGBT community,” she said. “We need people to understand the differences between gender and sexuality, how to talk to someone who is trans without offending them. We want everyone on the same plane so that if a victim is talking to any member of the DA’s Office, they can expect to be treated in a capacity that is consistent, appropriate and respectful. And from there, we want to be even more active and aggressive in curbing crime against LGBTQ people.” ■

In its filing, the body urged the court to take the case because DOMA is an “issue of great national importance.” The motion argued that the recent appellate ruling — which marked the first time a federal appellate court found DOMA unconstitutional — seems to oppose precedent and represents a “new standard of equal-protection review.” Also last week, a federal judge denied BLAG’s motion to stay a ruling in another DOMA challenge, Pedersen v. OPM, filed in Connecticut by a group of legally married same-sex couples. In denying BLAG’s request, Judge Vanessa Bryant referenced the likelihood the issue will soon come before the Supreme Court. “The court finds that public interest weighs against the entry of a stay in this matter, as the challenge to the constitutionality of Section 3 of DOMA presents an important issue to the nation as a whole, such that the 2nd Circuit and potentially the Supreme Court would benefit from as many opinions and analyses as possible to enrich their review,” she said. ■

Erwynn Umali and civilian Will Behrens — and was impressed by their commitment to one another. On hand at the chapel were the couple’s family and friends, several gay-rights activists and Sgt. Elizabeth Garcia, the chaplain’s assistant, who handled logistical arrangements. And then there was Wagoner, whose denomination preaches that homosexuality is sinful and is “not a valid alternative lifestyle.” “As a Southern Baptist, why was I here? I was here to lend support,” Wagoner said. “I was here supporting Airman Umali. I’ve worked with him. He’s a comrade in arms. “I’m also supporting Chaplain Reeb,” he said. “She gave a beautiful ceremony.” According to the latest Pentagon figures, there are about 2,930 chaplains on active duty, most from theologically conservative faiths and organizations. The Southern Baptist Convention has the largest contingent, with about 450 active-duty chaplains; the Roman Catholic Church is next with about 220. The Catholic official who oversees those chaplains, Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, had vehemently opposed repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and issued a statement after repeal conveying ongoing concerns “in this difficult time.” “This archdiocese remains resolved in the belief that no Catholic chaplain will ever be compelled to condone — even silently — homosexual behavior,” he said then. However, Broglio said he was unaware of any major repealrelated problems that had arisen for his chaplains during the first nine months of the new era. “There have been no overt difficulties,” he said. “It’s more a question of what might occur in the future.” Broglio remains concerned that Catholic chaplains might somehow be pressured to participate in or facilitate ceremonies or programs that bestow recognition and approval on same-sex couples: “As time goes by, it will be a challenge, to make certain you’re not silently condoning.” As for preaching the Catholic doctrine that homosexual behavior is a sin, Broglio said he expects chaplains to retain the freedom to do so as part of their religious ser-

vices. But he said there is confusion as to whether that freedom extends to other settings where chaplains might face pressure to deliver inclusive messages. Broglio said he has not given his chaplains specific instructions to either emphasize church teaching on homosexuality in their preaching or to avoid the subject. He concurred with the estimates that only a handful of chaplains have left the military because of the repeal. He said “two or three” Catholic chaplains had resigned their commissions in recent months, and guessed that repeal may have been a factor though they didn’t cite that specifically. Another conservative denomination with a large contingent of chaplains — 114 on active duty — is the Assemblies of God. Scott McChrystal, a retired Army chaplain who oversees them, said concerns that preceded repeal had not been borne out. “Since the actual repeal, I cannot recall a single instance where I’ve gotten a call from one of our chaplains who’s had a problem,” he said. “Our goal as an organization is simply to provide as much help as we can to anybody we can.” Likewise, Frank Clawson, director of military relations for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said none of the 42 active-duty Mormon chaplains with whom he works has reported problems linked to the repeal or expressed a desire to leave the service. Yet Clawson remains wary that the military could become increasingly inhospitable to religious conservatives. “I don’t know if the vote is in yet,” he said. “The pendulum has swung the other way, to where if you do have a faith, you’re almost looked down on.” The loudest assertions that conservative chaplains face problems come from outside the active-duty ranks, notably from a coalition of retired chaplains and other religious leaders called the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. In a letter to a Republican congressman in March, the alliance contended that repeal has been implemented “with an open and palpable hostility” to chaplains and servicemembers who disapprove of homosexuality. The alliance supports a measure backed by House Republicans that would ban the use of military chapels for same-sex weddings and other similar ceremonies. The Pentagon says it will allow such ceremonies when in accordance with state law. ■

INCIDENTS REPORTED — At 3:35 p.m. June 25, a woman was walking in the 200 block of South 13th Street when a male grabbed her cell phone from her tote bag. She then grabbed it back and the male pushed her against a fence, took the phone and fled west on Locust. The suspect was described as a black male in his 20s, 6-foot-3 and wearing tan cargo shorts and a black T-shirt. — At 3:15 p.m. June 26, a male snatched a cell phone from the victim’s hand while they were on the westbound MarketFrankford train. The perpetrator exited at the 11th and Market streets station and was described as a black male, 16-18 years old, 5-foot-7, thin, with flat-top haircut and wearing a white T-shirt and dark-blue basketball shorts. — At 5:15 p.m. June 26, two males snatched a cell phone from the victim’s hand while they were descending the stairs to the Broad Street Subway at 123 S. Broad St. The suspects were described as black males; one was thin and wearing tan cargo shorts and the other was about 18 years old, thin and wearing jean shorts and a baseball cap. — At 1:15 p.m. June 27, a man was on the 400 block of South 13th Street when a female pretending to know him approached and hugged him. The victim told her he did not know her and she left in a silver SUV. The man then discovered money missing from his pants pocket. The suspect was described as a Hispanic female, 50 years old, 5-foot-5, 140 pounds with reddish brown hair and wearing a light T-shirt and sunglasses. — At 8:45 a.m. June 29, a male was inside Good to Go, 1001 Market St., and as he went to make a purchase, grabbed the money from the register and fled through the Market East station. The suspect was described as a black male, 20 years old, 5foot-7, with a thin build and dark complexion and wearing all black clothing. — At 11:40 p.m. June 29, a male took

$14 off the bar inside Uncles, 1220 Locust St., and fled. The suspect was described as a black male, 5-foot-9 and wearing a red shirt and red shorts. — Between 6:30 p.m. June 28 and 7:15 p.m. June 30, a secured bicycle was stolen from outside 1245 Lombard St. — At 12:30 p.m. June 30, a man and his wife were in an argument with a male outside 123 S. Broad St. when the male sprayed them with mace and swung a baseball bat at them — and fortunately missed — then fled. The suspect was described as a black male, 30-40 years old, 6-foot, 250 pounds, bald and wearing a red baseball cap, blue checkered shorts and a blue muscle shirt. — Between 8-10:30 p.m. June 30, someone entered a residence in the 800 block of Lombard Street with a key and stole computers, jewelry and cameras. There were no fingerprints recovered at the scene. Names of other person(s) with a key for the property were provided to Central Detective Division. — At 12:45 a.m. July 1, a male entered the Westbury Bar, 261 S. 13th St., simulated having a weapon under his shirt and ordered the employee to open the cash register. The employee refused and the male fled from the bar; nothing was taken. The suspect was described as a white male, 45-48 years old, 5-foot-6, 155 pounds, bald with tattoos on neck and a teardrop tattoo under his eye, and wearing a black T-shirt with white writing. — At 9:50 p.m. July 1, an employee of Garces Trading Company, 215 S. Quince St., was sitting behind the restaurant on a break when a male hit him on the neck with an unknown object and took his Droid phone. The suspect was described as a black male in his 30s, 6-foot and wearing a white button-down shirt and dark pants. NON-SUMMARY ARRESTS — At 10:30 p.m. June 28, 6th District Officers Duncan and Burrell arrested a male wanted on a bench warrant for failure to appear for court outside 1219 Spruce St. The 36-year-old suspect with a West Philadelphia address was charged with contempt of court. SUMMARY OFFENSE ARRESTS — On June 28, 6th District officers issued a citation for a summary offense outside 388 S. 12th St. at 12:40 a.m. — On June 29, 6th District officers issued a citation for a summary offense outside 300 S. 12th St. at 1:55 a.m. ■

With QFest now underway, here are a few more films to check out over the festival’s next 10 days. Philadelphia native Cheryl Dunye is one of three talented queer filmmakers presenting one of three eXXXplicit films at QFest this year. Her fabulous fairy tale, “Mommy Is Coming” [8:15 p.m. July 18, Ritz Bourse; 9:30 p.m. July 20, Ritz Bourse], is an over-the-top porn comedy. Opening with the indelible image of a gun, wrapped in a condom, enveloped by a vagina, viewers get a taste of what’s to come. The story has Claudia (Papi Coxxx), an old-fashioned butch, unable to trust her insatiable girlfriend Dylan (Lil Harlow). When Claudia visits a Berlin sex club one night, she puts on a mustache and loosens her inhibitions. Becoming “Claude,” she tries some new things. Later, in guy disguise, she ends up unknowingly flirting with Dylan’s mother, Helen (Maggie Tapert). Everything — and everyone — comes together one night at a hotel in the big climax. Dunye showcases plenty of wit with the twat, as “Mommy Is Coming” features some amusing comic bits among the raunchy hardcore scenes. The film also includes some clever direct-address commentaries with cast members and various sex-club extras that put the film’s messages — about love, trust and sex — into perspective. The mumblecore porno “I Want Your Love” [9:30 p.m. July 19, Ritz East; 7:15 p.m. July 21, Bourse] offers parting glances of San Franciscan Jesse (Jesse Metzger) on the eve of his move to Ohio. Jesse tries to combat his despair through empty sex with a pick-up and saying goodbye to his ex, Ben (Ben Jasper). When his best friend Wayne (Wayne Bumb) throws a party for Jesse, Jesse hides out downstairs in his neighbor’s place. “I Want Your Love” is compelling because Jesse’s anxiety is palpable, especially when he’s bored. Viewers, however, will be stimulated during the copious (and lengthy) explicit sex scenes that show real intimacy between various couples. The cast of average-looking guys gives bold, brazen performances. While writer-director Travis Mathew’s film meanders a bit in search of a point, “I Want Your Love” still manages to be both impassioned and poignant. Rounding out the erotica, Jim Tushinski’s “Dirty Poole” [5 p.m. July 14, East] is a work-in-progress screening of a documentary about “Boys in the Sand” creator Wakefield Poole. A former dancer turned pornographer, Tushinski’s affectionate project is an entertaining walk down memory lane for anyone who saw Poole’s films back in the day. It is also a terrific queer history project for those unfamiliar with the groundbreaking director of “Bijou,” “Moving” and “One, Two, Three.” Poole recalls his desire to make “artistic, erotic — not dirty” films, and the humbling experience of flopping with his fascinating big-budget spectacle, “Bible!” (The clips from this fiasco are fantastic!) Perhaps the most poignant segment has Poole returning to the Fire Island houses where he shot his most famous film, “Boys in the Sand.” Tushinski and Poole will attend the festival and discuss the filmmaker’s life and career. Several films at QFest feature cross-dressing and transgender characters. Here are two international films of note: “Zenne Dancer” [9:30 p.m. July 18, East; 5:15 p.m. July 20, East] is an intriguing Turkish (melo)drama inspired by true stories. Cam (Kerem Can) is a beautiful-bodied male belly dancer who befriends both Ahmet (Erkan Avci), a closeted Turkish student, and his lover Daniel (Giovanni Arvaneh), a German photographer. Filmmaker Nicole Conn gets ‘Perfect’

Kramer PGN Contributor Lesbian writer-director Nicole Conn’s “A Perfect Ending” plays QFest 7 p.m. July 21 at the Ritz East, with an encore presentation at 2:15 p.m. July 22. This romantic drama with a twist has an uptight married woman, Rebecca (Barbara Niven), unexpectedly seeking sexual pleasure from Paris (Jessica Clark), an escort, and possibly falling in love. The passionate Conn spoke with PGN about her impassioned new film. PGN: Rebecca opens herself up to a new experience with Paris. How susceptible do you think people are toward getting out of their comfort zones, as Rebecca says, and discovering themselves? NC: I don’t think they are. This is a twofold story. Women and men do not follow the things they are most fearful of. Barbara Niven was quitting acting the day I gave her the script. She ordered a cheeseburger, which showed that it was true! No actress eats like that. After she read the script, she told me, she had to do this, because it terrified her. It’s about conquering fear and the empowerment you get from it that helps Rebecca redeem her pointless life. PGN: Why did you make Paris an escort? Do you think the women could have met and had an arrangement under other circumstances? NC: I actually thought as a cinematic device, that’s where the human comedy comes in. Rebecca is a starched, calendar-packed woman doing things, not living life, whereas these women [escorts] were astute and had no inhibitions. For them to hook up plays out in a very funny way. The idea of her having a female escort, rather than best friends, or date, also made it more dangerous. PGN: Paris is also a painter/pointillist. Why did you see her work as a theme for the film? The opening sequence shows the dots that get connected over the course of the story. NC: I wanted to employ a cinema language that parallels the artwork of pointillism. I did that because I wanted close-ups of things in wide[r] shots that [viewers] PERFECT PAGE 22

struggles for money and tries to avoid mandatory military service, Daniel encourages Ahmet to come out to his parents. There are some fabulous-looking, highly stylized fantasy sequences in “Zenne Dancer” that feature Cam’s drag routines. These serve as counterpoints to Ahmet’s much more serious storyline about his culture, which practices honor killings. It is the dramatic moments that provide the emotional power of “Zenne Dancer,” but directors M. Caner Alper and Mehmet Binay overemphasize the melodramatic scenes, undercutting the film’s important messages about truth and love, shame and death. “Facing Mirrors” [5 p.m. July 21, Bourse; 2:30 p.m. July 22, Bourse] is an exceptional Iranian film about Adineh (Sheyesteh Irani), a pre-op PERFECT from page 21

didn’t know, but then, later, all the pieces exist. I wanted to look at the detail and the nuance. That is where everything happens. I realize it can be a philosophical approach, but every point counts. PGN: The music in the film is very distinctive. Who wrote/sang it? NC: The vocals are by Philadelphian Kathy Fowler. To me, her beautiful, haunting vocals are the essence of pain and the journey of woman. Her husband, Bob Fowler, wrote half the score. PGN: The film has soap-opera elements to it. Sylvie (Rebecca Staab), another escort in the story, even mentions that toward the film’s end. Are you a fan of soaps? NC: It’s an inside joke. I watched “Days of Our Lives” since I was 13. Years and years ago I wrote for “Port Charles.” Rebecca Staab was a main character on “General Hospital” and “Port Charles.” The crux of that scene is that you’re either whore or housewife. Sylvie is saying, “You have no control over your life and I get to say ‘Fuck You’ to the world.” PGN: Speaking of soaps, what can you say about the casting of Morgan Fairchild as the madame? NC: I wrote Morgan’s role for Joan Collins, who couldn’t do it. Someone [in the cast] got the script to Morgan, and she was so much fun to work with. She even threw that “Shut the fuck up!” line in. PGN: There is a considerably erotic (as well as lengthy and visually stunning) sex scene where the characters are all skin on white sheets. Can

transsexual running away from her father, who wants her to remain female and get married. She befriends Randa (Ghazal Shakeri), a taxi driver whose husband is in prison. While transsexual surgery is legal in Iran, the shame and ostracism toward these men and women prompt them to have surgery elsewhere. Such is Adineh’s situation, and why she enlists the aid of Randa to help her leave the country. “Facing Mirrors” shows how Adineh’s friendship helps change minds about trans people in Iran, and while this story gets slightly didactic at times, it is always compelling. Randa’s reactions — toward Adineh’s gender identity, or in a scene where her young son dresses up as a woman — are believable, and the bond between her and Adineh is heartfelt. The film yields considerable power as it comes to its satisfying conclusion. ■ you discuss how you conceived of this sequence? NC: I’m sort of known for being a lush romantic, and it’s my fervent desire not to make “romance” a dirty word. In the indie-film world, you have to be “edgy,” and I wanted to tell a love story in a completely different way. The love scene had to be something unlike anything else — it had to express all the emotions of someone who had never been touched in that way. That scene is like a very spiritual and sacred rite of passage, with fear, pain, anger, resentment and pleasure, all culminating in this one moment. We called it “the arena bed” since the world “falls off” in those scenes. We did a treatment after we edited it so the whites are blown out so it is just the two of them. All three of the film’s love scenes have a different, particular feel. PGN: The film also features a touching moment where Rebecca talks about trying to be “perfect.” Do you think women like Rebecca are traditionally pressured to be perfect — their bodies, their support of husbands, always being on time and well mannered, etc.? Do you think social expectations like this can be reworked? NC: Media started forming and informing our thinking and ideas about it. Expectations for people are so high: a guy in briefs with an eightpack or a woman in a bikini who is a size zero. We are comparing ourselves to those impossible standards. Rebecca took it to heart and tried to do everything perfectly well. She had no emotional reward except for the love of her children. That “perfection” scene became iconic for all of us. Paris says, “Every imperfection makes you perfectly who you are.” It’s corny, but so true. ■

Where I’ll be at QFest

VEE (ALIA HATCH) APPROACHES TRADE THROWING SHADE (THE WRITER GARY KRAMER) IN “BUMMING CIGARETTES” By Gary M. Kramer PGN Contributor My 12 favorite days of the year, QFest, have just begun. Attending film festivals is my passion. I love seeing friends in line, and swapping thoughts about what to catch — or avoid — when I’m not rushing off to the next screening. And I just give up trying to do things like go food shopping, do laundry or hit the gym for almost two weeks: There are films to be seen! I am especially looking forward to this year’s festival for several reasons. First, there is the world premiere of “Bumming Cigarettes,” a short film by Tiona McClodden. I have a cameo as a man who denies Vee (Alia Hatch) a cigarette as she waits for the results of her HIV test. (My character is credited as “Trade Throwing Shade.”) Seeing a rough cut of the film, I was particularly moved by James Tolbert III’s performance as Jimmy. I can’t wait to see this with audiences at the screening of ”Black, Blues and Other Hues” [7:15 p.m. July 20, Bourse]. I’m also anxious to see the short “T’Aint Nobody’s Bizness” in this program, as I’ve just read Philadelphia native Donald Bogle’s fabulous book on Ethel Waters. In addition to being on screen at QFest, I will also be on stage, doing a Q&A with Rose Troche at her tribute [4:45 p.m. July 21, East]. I am a huge fan of the New Queer Cinema/“Go Fish” filmmaker I interviewed years ago for her film “The Safety of Objects.” I look forward to catching her new work and discussing one of my favorite films of hers, “Bedrooms and Hallways.” QFest gives me the opportunity to catch up with some of my other favorite filmmakers and see their new works, (which I prescreen on DVD) on the big screen. Todd Verow will be on hand for the North American premiere of (and afterparty for) of his fun film “Bad Boy Street” [9:15 p.m. July 19, Bourse; 5 p.m. July 20, Bourse]. Shot in Paris, this intimate comedy-drama is more romantic than sexy, but still contains the expected eroticism from the hunky leads that are a staple of Verow’s work. The filmmaker also has a fantastic cameo and includes some very

funny comments about 3-D films and product placement in cinema. It does “Bad Boy Street” a disservice to reveal much about the plot involving Claude (Yann deMonterno) and his relationship with a stranger named Brad (Kevin Miranda), but this is a highly enjoyable work by an independent queer filmmaker at the height of his talent. Another independent queer filmmaker I adore is Everett Lewis, whose latest work, “Somefarwhere” [12:15 p.m. July 21, East; 7:15 p.m. June 22, Bourse], is an impressive, multilayered film. Lewis transports viewers to the Middle East, where Price (Bryce Blais) searches for his military boyfriend, and encounters Combs (Dale Dymkoski), a CIA agent. The sexual and dramatic tension between these two men is palpable — particularly in a homoerotic hotel-room scene. Dymkoski is a revelation as the seductive Combs. In addition, “Somefarwhere” looks ravishing. Lewis does a fantastic job capturing the intimacy of the character amid the vast canvas of the Middle Eastern landscape. I am anxious to see this film again — and on the big screen. Lastly, QFest allows me the opportunity to screen films I want to see that I have not previewed. I am most looking forward to seeing: — “Unfit: Ward Vs. Ward” [2:30 p.m. July 14, Bourse], a documentary about a Florida custody battle between a lesbian mother and her ex-con ex-husband. — “Another Movie of Love” [8:15 p.m. July 17, Bourse), a Chilean drama about young men tentatively falling into a relationship. — “Let My People Go” [7 p.m. July 15, East; 9:15 p.m. July 19, East], a gay Jewish dysfunctional family comedy, co-written by Christophe Honore. — “Men to Kiss” [9:30 p.m. July 21, East; 12:30 p.m. July 22, East], the latest comedy featuring the irresistible Marcel Schlutt. — And the shorts programs “Dangerous Trade” [9:30 p.m. July 17, East; 9:45 p.m. July 20, East] and “First Contact” [9:30 p.m. July 16, East; noon July 22, East]. Dan Schwartz: Choir, kettledrums and wig dances For those of you who love singing, I have two things to tell you about this weekend: First, the QFest Way Gay Sing Along will take place 7:15 p.m. July 15 at Tavern on Camac, 243 S. Camac St. Brittany Lynn and her Drag Mafia will lead the audience as everyone sings along with out-andproud music videos of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and today. Karaoke to the extreme, and I know karaoke. If you’re more interested in serious vocalizing, the Philadelphia Voices of Pride is the region’s only all-inclusive, mixed-voice chorus. They rehearse every Tuesday at the William Way LGBT Community Center and welcome all voice parts and experience levels, although you must audition to become a member of the choir. If your pipes aren’t quite up to snuff, they have plenty of non-singing roles for you to play. PGN spoke to the new artistic director, Dan Schwartz, about his love of music and what he does away from conducting. Hint: It also involves bending elbows. PGN: Where are you originally from? DS: West Philadelphia. Born and raised. PGN: Ha! Just like the Fresh Prince. DS: [Laughs.] That’s right. I actually went to school with Will Smith’s nephew. I got to meet Will once as he was picking up his nephew from school. I lived there until I went to Temple University for my undergrad and master’s. PGN: Any siblings? DS: I have a brother who is three years older and is also a musician. He plays jazz saxophone and he also went to Temple. He now teaches at St. Joe’s Prep. That’s the high school we both went to. PGN: Cool. Are your parents musical? DS: My dad’s side of the family is very musical. He’s been singing in a church choir for many years and his brother played the clarinet. PGN: What do/did your parents do? DS: My dad’s a school psychologist and my mom’s a speech therapist. PGN: And how did you get started in music? DS: I started with piano lessons at age 7 and then took trumpet and voice lessons in high school. The music program at St. Joe’s wasn’t very good back then so I joined an all-Catholic orchestra and concert band and jazz band on the side. At about 13, I started studying classical percussion with Susan Jones, principal timpanist of the Pennsylvania Ballet. My undergrad was in percussion before I switched to voice and choral conducting for my master’s.

PGN: What’s your favorite type of percussive music to play? DS: The most exciting thing for me is playing timpani, or kettledrums, at the back of an orchestra. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as laying into one of those gigantic drums. PGN: The kettledrums are one of my favorite instruments. I love the deep sound and the way they look. I wanted to buy one for my living room! DS: Yup. They’re really cool but very expensive. PGN: I found that out. What’s the best kettledrum song? DS: Ha! I’d say Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. PGN: I would have said, “Peter and the Wolf,” which shows you my level of classical expertise. Extracurricular activities? DS: That’s funny. Um, I also did a lot of theater in high school. PGN: What was a favorite experience in the theater? DS: Playing Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.” It was my senior year and we had a brilliant director, Mr. Braithwaite. He really wanted us to delve into Jewish tradition so the girl that played Golde and I got to go to a traditional Seder and Sabbath meal with some Orthodox friends. We learned prayers and rituals and it was fascinating. I loved learning all the culture. PGN: So I take it from your mention of St. Joe’s you were a good little Catholic boy? DS: [Laughs.] I tried to be! At least until I left high school. A lot of people think I may be Jewish because of my last name, but I’m not. The name is Austrian. PGN: What was a favorite moment conducting? DS: Well, I just got my conducting master’s in May so I don’t have too much experience. The Voices of Pride concert in May was my first time conducting so I’d say that was my favorite so far! PGN: OK, silly question. Whenever I watch conductors, it doesn’t look like they’re going to the beat. Am I crazy? DS: No, that’s one style of conducting that some people use. It’s usually done with an orchestra: The more ahead of the group you are, the more they can see how you’re trying to shape a musical phrase. PGN: I forgot to ask, do you and your brother ever play together? DS: Yes, I started out playing jazz drum when I was 10 and he plays sax, and we played with a friend of our parents in a little jazz trio for a long time.

PGN: You were the original Jonas Brothers. Switching gears, what was a first recognition that you were gay? DS: I hit puberty pretty early, right after fourth grade, and I think I knew then that I preferred boys. It was pretty cut and dried. PGN: How did you come out to the family? DS: With a couple of bottles of wine! It was in my freshman year at college. I’d come out to my brother Matthew in the middle of the year and he was a huge, huge support for me. My plan was to come out to my parents at the end of the school year, but I was so nervous about it I couldn’t concentrate on studying for my finals. So with the help of my brother, we went home to tell them. We got to the house before my parents got home from work so he and I had a couple of bottles of wine and when they got home I told them. The day after — with my permission — they told the whole family. They were great about it and have been supportive ever since.

PGN: Back to PVOP, how do you choose the music? DS: That is a good question! Actually I’m pretty new, so the theme for the spring concert, “A World of Our Own,” had already been chosen. It was a choristers’ choice, so each choir member got to submit songs and then we narrowed it down from there. PGN: So has any of your father’s training in child psychology helped you deal with corralling a choir of 40 people? DS: [Laughs.] I’m a pretty laidback kind of guy, so I think that the less I try to control things, the easier it is and the better everyone gets along. PGN: How do people become members? DS: We have auditions. Our standards aren’t super-high: You don’t have to be Josh Grobin to join. As long as you can carry a tune and match pitch you should be OK. PGN: How did you get the job as artistic director? DS: It was a long process. They had a large pool of candidates and from the applications they selected eight people to interview and then picked four to actually conduct a piece. I chose Billy Joel’s “Lullaby,” which I related to the gay struggle, and I think that’s a part of why I got the job. PGN: What are some of your responsibilities? DS: More than I ever expected. I sit on the board and I get to make the artistic decisions, of course, with the board’s guidance, and I’m the chair of the music committee in charge of music selection.

Net gain for Liberty Tennis Philadelphia Liberty Tennis Association will hold its first Philadelphia Open tennis tournament July 20-22 at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center, 4842 Ridge Ave. Legacy Youth in East Falls was formerly the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center, the location of last year’s local tournament. PLTA board president David Killian said planning for the tournament started about a year ago and that the association intends to make it an annual event. “We’ve got about 60 players signed up so far and we’re hoping to have at least 70 total,” Killian said. “This is a nonprofit tournament. Any proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the William Way [LGBT] Community Center and Althea Gibson Tennis Center, 10th Street and Girard Avenue.” The United States Tennis Association, Sugar House and PhillyVax are primary sponsors for the tournament but PLTA is still looking for more sponsors of every level. Square Peg fits fine By Larry Nichols larry@epgn.com The mad culinary talent that fueled the gloriously off-the-wall menu at the defunct Adsum restaurant is back at it in his new Center City digs. Executive chef Matt Levin has taken his talents to the space formerly occupied by a Marathon Grill outpost and launched Square Peg, 929 Walnut St. And while there aren’t any dishes as crazy as his (in)famous Tastykake sliders (tiny burgers with Kandy-Kake “buns”) in the new place, there are still some moments of delicious genius here. The starters we tried were nothing short of addictive, none more so than the mac & cheese grilled cheese ($9.50), which at first sight is so very, very wrong. It is a middle finger the size of the Comcast Tower to anyone who is the slightest bit wary of carbs (or cholesterol). But its moist, cheesy onslaught is too good to condemn for its flagrant lack of health consciousness. And if you happen to dip it into the slightly spicy drunken tomato soup accompanying it, it’s a wrap. Short of being violently lactose intolerant, you cannot resist. The deviled eggs ($4) have a pleasantly spicy kick thanks to some wasabi mayo. The fried chicken tacos ($9) were super bad-ass with crispy and juicy pieces of chicken tossed in a tangy sauce. Back at Adsum, Levin showed love for the Canadian staple poutine (French fries smothered in brown gravy and cheese curds) on his menu. The incarnation topped it with foie gras, which sounded more inspired than it turned out to be. At Square Peg, he gives poutine a solid nod by putting it on the all-day breakfast menu. The breakfast poutine ($13.50) uses sausage gravy instead and tops the whole shebang with crumbled bacon and overeasy fried eggs. It’s an obscenely decadent

way to start the day, unless you have a hangover or a long day of lumberjacking ahead of you, and scratches the breakfast itch nicely. The house specialty at Square Peg is the fried chicken ($17) and it’s easy to taste why. We dare anyone to find a better piece of chicken in the city. Yeah, we said it. Perfectly hot, tender, juicy and crispy, this specimen inspired us to go all piranha on the two healthy pieces we got. The honeyed hot sauce on the plate was a nice bonus and the dish was accompanied by Kool-Aid-pickled watermelon (which was an appetizer back in the Adsum days) and some impressive collard greens. (If you can get us to like collard greens, color us impressed.) We hit a bump in the happy road with the cheesesteak pot pie ($16.50), which took the air out of our sails as soon as it hit the table. When you say “pot pie,” the image that instantly materializes is a flaky pie shell enveloping a steaming hot bastion of hearty goodness. In this case, the steaming goodness was a bowl of soupy cheese with steak and peppers topped by a chapeau of puff pastry. Now, because we had “pot pie” on the brain, something inside of us dejectedly put out the pouty lip and said, “Aw, man.” Then another part of us got irate and silently exclaimed, “Aw, hell no! You get all fancy and French on us now!” Try as we might, we couldn’t get as excited about this dish, even with the tiny bottle of sriracha that came with it. The General Tso’s chicken cobb salad ($14.5) is an inspired idea that was undermined by the huge crumbles of blue cheese, like unsubtle grenades of flavor elbowing everything else out of the way. But all was forgiven when the smoked black-bean chili hit the table ($14). It was so substantial and spicy that we didn’t care that there was no meat in it. Any time

couple of years, but apparently I’m not good at raising things. Every flower I tried to grow ended up dying within a week. I don’t think I should have pets or children. I do like to dance and to enjoy a good cocktail as well. I also collect beer mugs. PGN: What was the first record you bought? DS: Dave Matthews Band. PGN: If you were a Smurf, what would your name be? DS: It would be Papa Juicer. Papa because right now I live with four other people in a very large apartment and I’m kind of the one who brought us all together and handles the bills, so they all refer to me as Papa, and Juicer because I’ve gone through many, many crazy diets in the last few years and many of them entail some kind of fruit juice. PGN: What was your biggest onstage mishap? DS: That would go back to “Fiddler on the Roof.” We were doing the big beerdrinking song and clinking glasses and two of the guys went too hard, smashed their mugs and shattered glass went everywhere. The bad part was, shortly after there was a part where the dancers had to be on their knees. Rather than doing the planned choreography, I started dancing around the table picking up the glass — all to the tempo of the music. Everyone else followed and two of the guys ran off stage, got brooms and came back and created a whole broom dance on the spot. The audience went wild. It was a great moment. PGN: Three musicians you’d love to do a concert with? DS: Joni Mitchell would be one, she was so influential on popular music; Bryn Terfel, he’s a Welsh baritone who has been an inspiration to me; and Beyoncé. PGN: Song that makes you cry? I had a bad temper. My favorite color was red and there was a reason for that. Now, as I’ve gotten older and mellowed out, my favorite color is blue. PGN: A scary moment? DS: I think I’ve tried to forget most of them. Probably taking my oral exams for my master’s program. I had to sit in a room with all of my professors while they drilled me with questions for about 45 minutes. Right before I went in, I started freaking out and blanked on everything I’d learned and couldn’t even remember my own name, but once I got started I was fine. PGN: I’m going to guess that since you’re living with four other people that you’re single, but I hate to assume ... DS: No, you are correct in your assumption. I’ve actually been single my whole life. PGN: Let’s fix you up. What qualities are you looking for? DS: I tend to be outspoken, so someone who is soft-spoken. More introverted, the opposite of me. I’m a life-of-the-party kind of guy, so someone who balances me out. PGN: What’s the balance in the apart-

ment? DS: Four guys and a girl. PGN: It sounds like “New Girl,” that show with Zooey Deschanel where she lives with three guys. What’s a fun household moment for your group? DS: My female roommate likes to collect wigs, so some nights we’ll get really silly and put on the wigs, blast some club music and “wig out,” so to speak. We actually have a special wig dance! PGN: So what’s next for PVOP? DS: Our next concert is called “Made in America” and it will feature songs written by American composers like Morten Lauridsen, who has been described as a mystic and was named an “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment of the Arts, and composer/ conductor Eric Whitacre, whose groundbreaking Virtual Choir featuring 185 singers from 12 different countries received over a million views on YouTube in just two months, and many other interesting American composers.
