Ramsey agrees to policy changes stemming from Morris incident

NJ bans conversion therapy By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com New Jersey this week became only the second state in the country to ban so-called “ex-gay” therapy for minors. Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Monday signed into a law a bill that prevents licensed therapists, psychologists, social workers and counselors from administering conversion therapy, or efforts to change a patient’s sexual orientation, to those under 18. The practice is still legal for adults who consent to seeking such treatment. California was the first state to outlaw conversion therapy last year. Christie took action on the last day he could before the bill automatically became law without his signature. Both chambers of the state legislature approved the bill by large margins in June. Christie had previously stated he opposed conversion therapy for minors but declined to comment on whether he would sign or veto the legislation. I n a s t a t e m e n t M o n d a y, Christie said he was still concerned about government influence over parental decisions and was signing the legislation “reluctantly.” But, he said, studies from leading psychological and medical associations have shown that conversion therapy can put youth at increased risk for depression, suicide and other issues. “I believe that exposing children to these health risks without clear evidence of benefits that outweigh these serious risks is not appropriate,” Christie said. State Sen. Anthony Williams introduced a similar bill in Pennsylvania earlier this year. ■

Nutter declines to sever ties with Russian city By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com The Nutter administration said this week that the city will maintain its connection with a Russian city that passed one of the nation’s first precursors to the national anti-LGBT law. Philadelphia is currently in a “sister-city” relationship with Nizhny Novgorod, Russia’s fifth-largest city. The municipality passed a law banning LGBT propaganda last year, and the nation followed suit this summer, prompting international outcry. Thousands have signed on to a petition calling for Philadelphia to end that relationship, but Mark McDonald, spokesperson for Mayor Michael Nutter, said the mayor does not plan to do so. “After much discussion, we have concluded that severing ties would cut off communication and would be counterproductive,” McDonald said. “Ending our sister-city relationship with Nizhny

Novgorod would sever our ability to support their LGBT community today and in the future. It would also invalidate 21 years of work that would likely never be repaired.” McDonald said the severing of a sister-city tie is something only the mayor can do. In 1992, Ed Rendell signed a mayoral agreement with government officials from Nizhny Novgorod to create the relationship. “It is a mayoral agreement, not a contract by two elected officials to do certain things. Only the mayor could sever the ties,” McDonald said. “City Council could pass a resolution urging the mayor for a different action but otherwise this is a mayoral thing.” Jim Engler, director of legislation for Councilman James Kenney, said the councilman plans to introduce a resolution next month calling on Nutter to sever ties with PAGE 22

More than 10 years after the Nizah Morris incident, Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey has agreed to a series of policy changes stemming from it. In a letter to the Police Advisory Commission, Ramsey agreed to new policies regulating “courtesy rides,” the cancellation of medics for people in need of hospital care and the use of cellphones during official business. The PAC recommended the changes in a report issued to Ramsey in April. Morris was a transgender woman found with a fatal head wound shortly after she received a courtesy ride from Philadelphia police.

Her homicide remains unsolved, and a committee has formed to obtain justice in the case. The PAC also recommended 12 hours of LGBT-sensitivity training for Philadelphia police officers. Ramsey didn’t agree to that recommendation, but said he would support lobbying efforts to make such training mandatory statewide. Ramsey’s response doesn’t address other issues raised by the PAC, including the need for state and federal probes of the Morris case. His spokesperson, Lt. John Stanford, had no comment on whether Ramsey would support efforts to get the probes. Stanford also had no comment PAGE 2 as to when the

Antigay lawmaker pledges to block HB300 By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com Despite having more than 90 cosponsors, House Bill 300 may struggle to get out of the House State Government Committee, which is chaired by a virulently antigay legislator. HB 300, reintroduced earlier this month by state Rep. Dan Frankel (D-23rd Dist.), would amend the state Human Relations Act to protect the LGBT community from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. The legislation, which has bipartisan support, was referred to the committee on Aug. 8. But committee chair and House Majority Leader Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-12th Dist.) told news outlets last week he would block the legislation from a hearing because he did not think it would pass through committee, comprised of 15 Republicans and 10 Democrats. Metcalfe did not respond to a

request for comment from PGN. He told witf.com that the bill is discriminatory towards Christians, whom he said may not agree with the LGBT “lifestyle.” Metcalfe’s remarks fueled an outcry from supporters of the bill. Rep. Mark Cohen (D-202nd Dist.) urged Metcalfe to bring the issue up for debate with a hearing. “Because of this issue’s importance, public support and widespread House member and Senate member support, I hope it is possible to have an official dialogue on this issue, beginning with a public hearing in Harrisburg,” Cohen wrote. “It would be good to have public input from the Human Relations Commission, the governor’s office and both proponents and opponents of this legislation.” Frankel also wrote to Metcalfe expressing his concern for the lack of attention the bill could get in committee. “Too many Pennsylvanians have the misfortune of working for a boss with a discriminatory bias like Chairman Metcalfe — a boss

who believes the person you go home to is more important than the quality of your work,” Frankel said in a statement. A recent poll by Susquehanna Polling and Research found that a majority of Pennsylvania voters support HB 300. Frankel said this research shows that Pennsylvania is ready to move forward with the legislation, and that lawmakers should follow suit. “Pennsylvania’s citizens have spoken clearly — 72 percent of us agree that we need to protect our LGBT relatives, friends and neighbors from discrimination. In the 1960s, opponents of interracial marriage argued that it violated their religious beliefs. That argument didn’t hold water for couples from different backgrounds, and it doesn’t hold water for gay and lesbian employees and couples either,” he said. “The 72 percent of Pennsylvanians — more than nine million citizens, including 115 members of the General Assembly — who support this deserve a hearing and a vote.” ■

policy changes will be implemented. Ramsey’s response was conveyed to the PAC on Aug. 15 by his special advisor, Lt. Francis T. Healy. Ronda B. Goldfein, chair of the PAC, said Ramsey’s response was a step in the right direction. “I hope it prevents some mistreatment of someone in the future,” Goldfein said. “It’s not nearly enough, but at least it’s a starting place.” She said the PAC wasn’t in a position to solve the mystery of Morris’ death. “But we hope we can change some of the circumstances that created the mystery,” Goldfein added. Officer Elizabeth Skala gave Morris a courtesy ride during the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 22, 2002. Morris had been drinking at the old Key West Bar, near 13th and Walnut streets. She had trouble standing, and a 911 call was placed on her behalf. Skala arrived at the scene, canceled medics and reportedly transported Morris to the vicinity of 16th and Walnut streets. Shortly after the ride, Morris was found there by a passing motorist, lying unconscious with

blunt-force trauma to her head. Sgt. Michael Dougherty, Skala’s supervisor, said he gave permission for the ride during a cellphone conversation with Skala. But Skala testified that she only spoke with her dispatcher and Morris prior to embarking on the ride. The PAC was unable to determine whether the purported cellphone conversation took place. Still, it recommended checks on cell-phone use during official police business. While the Key West assignment was pending at the 911 call center, Skala initiated a vehicle stop near 13th and Market streets. The ensuing confusion resulted in an unfounded designation for the initial 911 call, and no police report of the ride was filed. . As part of its Morris investigation, the PAC received a redacted copy of a time-response log relating to the vehicle stop. On Aug. 16, PGN filed a Rightto-Know Law request with the District Attorney’s Office for an unredacted copy of the log. The request remained pending at presstime. The request was filed on behalf of the paper by attorney Danielle Goebel of the Salmanson Goldshaw law firm. ■

Changes coming this fall for QSpot By Jen Colletta PGN Staff Writer Monthly LGBT youth event QSpot is moving to a new home this fall. The gathering — which offers local youth the chance to connect with area service organizations and enjoy food and fun with friends in a safe space — will be held through the duration of the year at William Way LGBT Community Center, 1315 Spruce St. The first event in the new location will be Sept. 7, and every subsequent first Saturday of the month. The event, now in its third year, was previously held at Broad Street Ministry. Educational Justice Coalition founder Quincy Greene, the driving force behind QSpot, said Broad Street Ministry offered its space free of charge during QSpot’s first two years. But, earlier this year, the church asked for a rental fee. QSpot does not have any formal funding and relies solely on private donations, Greene said, so the charge was not viable. Organizers took a two-month hiatus in July and August to find a new space. The group had initially considered having QSpot at William Way but went with Broad Street Ministry because of the offer of free space. Greene said the center this summer offered a “sizeable discount” for use of its

space. The Sept. 7 and Nov. 2 QSpots will be held in the Philadelphia Room, and the Oct. 5 and Dec. 14 events in the ballroom. Greene said the partnership will be beneficial both to QSpot and the center. “William Way is an LGBTQ-friendly space, and almost everyone in the community knows about this space. So I think the youth will feel comfortable there,” he said. “And I think this will help William Way bring in a demographic that doesn’t often attend events there. This is a great way to collaborate and increase the visibility of LGBTQ youth of color.” About 60-70 percent of QSpot attendees identify as youth of color, but Greene noted that the event brings in young people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as from varying socioeconomic situations, from homeless youth to college students. During the two-month absence, Greene said he got a wealth of messages from young people calling for the event’s return. “I got weekly, if not daily, messages from young people saying that they missed QSpot and asking when it was going to start again,” he said. “[Youth-organizing committee Philadelphia Young Leaders Council] members would contact me saying how much they wanted it to return. So we did everything in our power to raise the money to make sure this event doesn’t end and continues on into the future.”

Harrisburg hearing date set for MontCo marriage case By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com A Commonwealth Court judge next month will hear oral arguments on a Montgomery County official’s move to defy the state ban on same-sex marriage. State and county officials will deliver oral arguments Sept. 4 in Harrisburg on the state’s petition for a write of mandamus, which would prevent MontCo Register of Wills D. Bruce Hanes from issuing any more marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The case has not yet been assigned to a judge. The state Department of Health sued Hanes last month, saying he was acting outside of his authority by issuing marriage licneses to same-sex couples. In a court filing Monday, the county continued to argue that the ban violates the state constitution and that Hanes, as a public official, has a duty to uphold the constitution. The county also asserted that the case should be filed in the state Supreme Court and urged the Commonwealth Court to dismiss it on standing grounds. This is the second response the county has filed in as many weeks, following an

amended state filing. The amended filing clarified the department’s role overseeing state statistics, such as marriage records, and expanded its commentary on the role of public officials in abiding by state laws. Earlier this month, the court agreed to expedite a decision. Hanes’ action came shortly after Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane declined to defend against a lawsuit challenging the ban on same-sex marriage, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of a key provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Hanes’ office has issued 140 same-sex marriage licenses in the last month. More than 30 of those couples announced their intention to intervene in the case. Philadelphia Register of Wills Ronald Donatucci has declined to follow suit, saying he does not have such authority. Mayor John Fetterman, of Bradford, outside of Pittsburgh, recently performed a number of same-sex-marriage ceremonies for couples who were licensed in Montgomery County. And this week, State College Mayor Elizabeth Goreham hosted a same-sex wedding ceremony, although she did not personally officiate. ■

NJ court hears marriage case By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com The push for marriage equality in the Garden State moved forward in a New Jersey courtroom last week. Oral arguments were held Aug. 15 in Trenton in a case in which several same-sex couples are suing for marriage equality. The plaintiffs, with Garden State Equality and Lambda Legal, filed suit in 2011, and earlier this summer filed a motion for summary judgment, asking Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson to immediately rule that the state’s civil-union law is unconstitutional on account of the June U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning a key provision of the federal ban on same-sex marriage. Lambda Legal Deputy Director Hayley Gorenberg and co-counsel Lawrence S. Lustberg of Gibbons, P.C., are arguing the case. Jacobson will rule on the matter this fall. In last week’s oral arguments, Gorenberg said New Jersey’s civil-unions law is violating a 2006 court order that requires the state to treat same-sex couples equally. “The state’s discrimination is all that bars same-sex couples from the full array of federal protections for their families,” Gorenberg said in a statement. “New Jersey can fix this, and it should.” The path to last week’s hearing started in 2002 with Lewis V. Harris, where seven New Jersey same-sex couples sued for state

recognition. The court ultimately ruled that same-sex couples should be provided the same benefits as heterosexual couples, paving the way for the legislature’s adoption of a civil-union law. But, the couples are arguing that title is not universally understood and that they still face discrimination and bias. Plaintiff Cindy Meneghin said she, her partner Maureen Kilian and their two children are looking forward to a final resolution in the lengthy case. “We were prepared for a long, hard road for our family and for other same-sex couples and their kids,” Meneghin said. “The U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down DOMA was historic for the nation but out of reach for us here in New Jersey. We won’t give up until we have the freedom to marry and the opportunity to share that security and joy with our family.” In addition to the court case, some marriage-equality advocates are calling on state lawmakers to override Gov. Chris Christie’s veto of a same-sex marriage bill. Garden State Equality executive director Troy Stevenson said his agency is exploring a number of options. “Garden State Equality was proud to help initiate this historic case,” he said. “We have long been leading the charge for equality, and we will continue to pursue every available avenue to make sure New Jersey’s same-sex couples enjoy the dignity of marriage as quickly as possible.” ■

LGBT tourism effort marks 10 years with new commercial By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com Philadelphia broke ground nearly a decade ago when it became the first U.S. city to air a television commercial specifically aimed at LGBT tourists, inviting travelers to “get their history straight and their nightlife gay.” To mark the 10th anniversary of that effort, the city’s tourism officials are again taking to the airwaves with the same message — but with a whole new star. The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation unveiled its new LGBT-tourism commercial Thursday night at the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association convention in Boston. The 30-second spot centers on drag queen Miss Richfield 1981 as she takes a “selfie tour,” capturing photos of herself exploring the city’s offerings. This marks only the third LGBT-tourism television commercial in the nation; Key West also created a television spot in 2011. The original 2004 commer-

cial, which launched a year after the start of the pioneering “Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay” campaign, centered on a colonial man writing a love letter in which he asks his sweetheart, which viewers ultimately learn is a man, to meet him in Philadelphia. The commercial and campaign, as well as the work of such agencies as the Philadelphia Gay Tourism Caucus, is largely credited with helping Philadelphia repeatedly make it onto top-10 lists of LGBT tourist destinations, whereas the city wasn’t even on top-20 lists a decade ago. “This was the first open invitation; people have to be invited to want to go somewhere,” said GPTMC CEO Meryl Levitz. “When we started, we had a gay hotel package that a few hotels had signed onto and once they saw immediately this was taking off, pretty much every hotel signed on. But we don’t even need a specific package like that any more because it was such a convincing announcement that people know that, not only were they invited, but that they would be welcomed wherever they went

in Philadelphia.” The original commercial got a wealth of airtime from pundits from Bill O’Reilly to Jon Stewart and went on to garner the agency a number of awards. The latest commercial was an effort to mark the growth of the city and the LGBT tourism market in the past decade while remaining cognizant of the original idea, Levitz said. “We wanted to mark our anniversary and anyone can do something like a party, but we wanted a convincing way to say that we’re still staying true to our message,” Levitz said. “So we decided to remessage, using everything we have today and focusing on the growth of Philadelphia itself in the past 10 years.” The commercial follows the history-to-nightlife structure, but branches out far beyond the original backdrop of Independence Hall, as Richfield visits locales like the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center, and grabs a photo sewing a rainbow flag with a colonial impersonator. She also introduces viewers to the bar and nightlife scene, and dances amid a crowd of LGBTs

that many in the community are sure to recognize. The commercial finishes with Richfield collapsing on a rainbow-filled hotel-room bed, encouraging viewers to make their trip to Philadelphia an overnight one. GPTMC director of public relations Bruce Yelk said Richfield was a perfect fit for the role. “We’ve had a great partnership since 2011. She’s out on the road championing Philadelphia as she goes from city to city and she does a great job for us,” Yelk said. “People adore her, and not just

in the gay community, but in the straight community as well. She has a strong appeal to our demographic — the 30-plus group — as that’s her market as well. In the gay community, if you know her, there’s instant buy-in, but even if you don’t and you see her, she’s a likeable character. She’s a performer.” The new commercial will begin airing next month and through October nationwide on Logo and in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., markets on Bravo and Style. ■

Muhlenberg rates among top LGBT religious colleges By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com LGBT college group Campus Pride rated a Pennsylvania college among the top religiously affiliated colleges in the country. Muhlenberg College, a small liberal-arts school in Allentown that is home to 2,225 students, was among the top seven on Campus Pride’s new list. The college received a 4.5 out of a potential score of five for LGBT-friendliness on Campus Pride’s index. In addition to Muhlenberg, other toprated schools were Agnes Scott College, Baldwin-Wallace College, Elmhurst College, Georgetown University, Hamline University and Macalester College. Muhlenberg is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Karen Green, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students at Muhlenberg, said that, in her seven-year tenure, “this has been a most welcoming community to students, faculty and staff who self-identify as a member of the LGBT community or are even questioning their identity. We have very engaged faculty who teach gender studies in addition to allowing the space to discuss the many ways that gender identity is expressed in society.” Green said one of the campus’ most defining LGBT-friendly features is its gender-neutral housing, which was pioneered by an openly gay student who worked with the LGBT coordinator, Office of Student Affairs and other student leaders to launch the housing initiative. Green said Muhlenberg is also home to innovative LGBT student programs such as Students for Queer Advocacy, which offers LGBT support, advocacy and programming.

Anita Kelly, Muhlenberg’s LGBT coordinator and director for counseling services, has been at the college for 15 years, and said SQUAD has helped promote LGBT awareness on campus. “They are primarily an advocacy group versus a social group, so their goal is to make other students aware of issues and concerns and I think they do a very good job in doing that,” Kelly said. “They have different programs throughout each semester and their big programming is during their Queer Week, where they do a lot more of awareness and present more information.” Kelly noted that Muhlenberg’s LGBTaccepting environment was first championed by a former leader. “Our former president started creating that atmosphere and it has progressed. He started with domestic partner benefits before anyone else was doing it. He was a visionary,” she said. “We also have a large contingency of LGBT faculty, staff and administrators. We are a very open and accepting and nonjudgmental environment.” Muhlenberg also offers counseling services for LGBT and questioning students. College chaplain the Rev. Callista Isabelle said the Lutheran Church has a tradition of LGBT acceptance. The Muhlenberg chapel itself, she said, has been designated a Reconciling in Christ organization, signifying its LGBT acceptance, for a number of years. While the college has a strong record of LGBT policies and practices, Isabelle said, there is always more progress to be made. “Our work of welcoming and advocating for LGBT students is never complete,” she said. “There is always more we can do to help our LGBT students and other college community members find a place and a voice here.” ■

News Briefing Cozen deposits money with court Death benefits totaling $43,822.35 that a lesbian widow and her estranged in-laws are fighting over were placed in a court registry last week. On Aug. 16, the law firm of Cozen O’Connor deposited the money at the federal courthouse in Philadelphia. Jennifer Tobits says she’s entitled to the benefits of her deceased wife, Sarah Ellyn Farley, who worked at Cozen as an attorney before her 2010 death. But Farley’s parents, Joan and David Farley, say they’re entitled to the money, contending the women’s Canadian marriage isn’t valid for purposes of the death benefits. In July, U.S. District Judge C. Darnell Jones 2d sided with Tobits. The money was placed in a registry pending a decision by the Farleys on a possible appeal. “This was expected, and we hope Jennifer will receive the money soon,” said Christopher F. Stoll, an attorney for Tobits. Attorneys for the Farleys had no comment at presstime.

PAC asks for more commissioners At its Aug. 19 public meeting, the city’s Police Advisory Commission renewed its call for additional commissioners. The PAC, which investigates police-misconduct complaints, is supposed to have 19 commissioners and alternates, but currently only has seven. Openly gay PAC member Chuck Volz questioned whether the Nutter administration and

Philadelphia City Council support civilian oversight of the police department. “I think they want us to pretend we’re doing something, and they’ll pretend with us,” he said. Mayor Nutter has the responsibility of directly filling six vacancies and filling another six from City Council recommendations. The PAC hasn’t had a full complement of commissioners for more than two years. Nutter spokesperson Mark McDonald said an announcement of new commissioners is imminent and that 10 have already been selected. “We are actively pursuing two additional commissioners,” McDonald told PGN. “We actually had selected two others and they agreed to serve but then withdrew for personal reasons.” Also during the meeting, commissioners discussed ways of optimizing their scarce resources, and asked for suggestions from the public. Obituary AnnMarie Thompsan, 29, financial underwriter By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com Financial underwriter AnnMarie Thompsan died on July 29. She was 29. Thompsan was a native of Erie and was a state-champion shot putter for her high school, Villa Maria Academy. She attended Slippery Rock University and later transferred to Edinboro University to study political science and business. Thompsan, who lived in West Philadelphia with her partner, Anne Lunnie, worked in finance and was an underwriter. Lunnie said Thompsan enjoyed working with children and ultimately was hoping to pursue a different career path. “She was looking to branch out and was looking into different grad schools. She didn’t really like the idea of working in the corporate sector and was on her way to finding her dream,” Lunnie said. “She liked working with kids and signed to coach the University City soccer league because she played soccer when she was younger.” Lunnie and Thompsan got married on Oct. 7 in Philadelphia. The ceremony was held in the middle of South Broad Street, with Lunnie’s sister as the officiant, and the reception was at Triumph Brewing Company. Lunnie said Thompsan proposed, however the couple knew that wedding bells were in their future. “We both knew marriage was what we wanted. It was very important for us to mark our commitment to each other in the presence of those we loved,” Lunnie said. “We wanted a life together, children together and a home together. We were on our way to that.” The two met at Sisters in 2010, at the prompting of their best friends. “She was out with her best friend at Sisters, and I was with mine. My friend was chatting her up at the bar, trying to set us up, and she came over to buy me a drink and I was just so nervous,” Lunnie said. “She walked me and my friend to get our cab and then exchanged phone numbers and I got a call from her the next day. We joked that we had a couple dates and never looked back.” Lunnie said Thompsan had an infectious personality. “She was easy to fall in love with; everyone that knew her felt that way — her friends, my friends and my family just loved her. She had the most powerful per-

sonality I have ever met in my life. She just had a way of sucking everyone in and you couldn’t help it. It was like gravity.” While it was initially Thompsan’s humor that caught Lunnie’s attention, she said she quickly learned Thompsan had a wealth of strengths, including devotion to her loved ones. “She had the most ridiculous sense of humor in the world and she was totally out there in the best way,” Lunnie said. “She was a force of nature. She was unflinching and fierce and full of love and would do anything for the people she loved.” While she worked in the financial sector, Thompsan was fascinated by politics — among her varied other interests. “She loved politics. She would go on and on and if she found a person to talk to about politics, you couldn’t pull her away,” Lunnie said. “And she loved music so much. She had a life-long love affair of Riot Grrl. She loved beer and good whiskey and hanging out at bars with the people she loved. She loved to read and stay active in the community.” Lunnie said Thompsan’s passion for working with youth led her to become a supporter of and donor to The Attic Youth Center. “She donated a lot because of her past and because she did not have a place like that when she was growing up. The Attic meant a lot to her,” Lunnie said. A small memorial service was held at the William Way LGBT Community Center Aug. 3. Thompsan is survived by Lunnie and friends from all over the country. Wedding Art and Stevie Martin-Chester By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com After 21 years together, two LGBT activists tied the knot for a second time Aug. 10 at the Metropolitan Community Church of Philadelphia. Art and Stevie Martin-Chester met in 1992 when both were members of MCC in New Haven, Conn, the homestate of both Art, 68, and Stevie, 62, who later moved to Norristown. After a year of dating, Art asked Stevie to marry him and, in 1994, the two were joined in a commitment ceremony on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Art said when he met Stevie, the two instantly connected. “I was newly single and we met and it was like we had known each other forever,” Art said. “My first impression of him was, wow! He sings and when I heard him sing at the church, I was amazed with his gorgeous voice and his beautiful brown eyes.” Stevie said he remembers Art’s persistence in courting him. “I was head usher, in the choir, helping the pastor and doing things around the church and that was my life, so I really wouldn’t pay attention because I wasn’t thinking about dating,” Stevie said. Both Stevie and Art joined Connecticut’s branch of Men of all Colors Together and, while they were selling raffle tickets for a fundraiser for the organization, Art finally approached Stevie. They had their first date at a diner and, shortly after, Stevie said he knew Art was the one for him. “We sat there for hours and just talked. I was amazed and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing: He was so honest, direct and just incredible,” Stevie said. “We started

dating and I fell in love with him two weeks after that. He is so supportive, loving and political. He loves colors, loves music and is just incredible. I know what brought me to him was Godsent.” Their 1994 union was part of a larger action that included other same-sex couples, with news cameras on hand. This time around, however, the couple chose a more personal church service “The service was wonderful. I always wanted to be married in that church,” Stevie said.

They also obtained a marriage license from Montgomery County, where officials are defying the state ban on same-sex marriage. The two previously wanted to go back to Connecticut to get married, but Art said he hopes unions like theirs make an important statement. “We live in Pennsylvania and felt that getting it here would help move the state to recognizing same-gender marriages,” he said. Despite their more-than two decades together, Art said the wedding reinforced his love for Stevie. “I felt like a little kid. I was just over-

whelmed and was so filled with love because I was marrying a man I had been with for 20-plus years.” ■

Holding on HB 300 Daryl Metcalfe. His name has been a thorn in the side of LGBT advocates for years, and his stance on LGBT issues has been rightfully compared to that of former Sen. Rick Santorum — whose ousting from office was largely credited to the work of LGBT activists. But Metcalfe continues his virulently homophobic reign from Harrisburg, unfurling his wrath on everyone from out Rep. Brian Sims — whom he accused of being in “open rebellion against God’s law” for applauding the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act on the House floor — to victims of domestic violence, as he was the lone state legislator who refused to sign on to a simple Domestic Violence Awareness Month resolution because he said the measure furthered the “homosexual agenda.” There are many words to describe Metcalfe, but “out of touch” may be the gentlest. Metcalfe again exemplified how far removed he is from the rest of the state and country this week by his continued pledge to block efforts to advance a bill that would ban discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Such legislation is already on the books in more than a third of the states in the country, including every state in the Northeast — save the Keystone State. And recent polling has shown that almost three-quarters of Pennsylvania citizens would support such a law. But, in true Metcalfe fashion, the House State Government Committee chair said he would not grant the measure a hearing nor allow the legislation to come up for a vote; without passing out of committee, the bill would be, yet again, dead on arrival. Either the Butler County lawmaker has an affinity for powerplays or his LGBT animus is so deeply ingrained that he’s prevented from seeing both logic and reason. Or maybe a bit of both. The LGBT community has waited too long for the movement to be further held up by someone of the likes of Daryl Metcalfe. LGBT people every day face harassment, discrimination and unfair treatment — which can lead to physical, economic and emotional turmoil — because our state lacks LGBT protections. Our community needs to rejuvenate the furor that booted Santorum out of office and mobilize against Metcalfe’s immobility — inundating his office and the offices of his fellow committemembers, and tapping into the creativity that permeates this activism-driven community to get across a clear message: Harassment, discrimination and unfair treatment deserve no place in Pennsylvania, especially from our elected officials. ■

People who identify as gay or lesbian are often accused of being “confused,” especially when we first come out. As if heterosexuality were the answer to some really complicated calculus problem that we’d eventually solve if only we’d try harder. Of course, sometimes folks who claim that gays and lesbians are confused think that we don’t know how penises and vaginas work. In any case, it’s insulting. With the rapidly increasing support of gays and lesbians, as individuals and as families, however, you’ve got to take the scope of who is “confused” a lot wider if you want to argue that equality is simply the result of befuddlement. Enter U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) who, at a recent town-hall meeting, said “I’m a Christian conservative. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman,” to much applause. He went on to complain about the Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act. “It’s a states’-rights issue and the federal government, I personally think, they need to stay out of it,” he said. Ah, yes. A states’rights issue. Hey, remember when “states’ rights” was secret code for white people keeping black people down? I don’t know, I just thought of that for some reason. Yoho went on to say, “More importantly, I think it’s a sad state of affairs in America today that we as a society are so confused that we have to redefine what marriage is. It’s an institution that’s been around for thousands of years, and I feel like it’s ordained by God, and are we that confused as a country that we have to start redefining these things?” There it is. The confusion argument. We’re not becoming a more tolerant and accepting society, we’re just confused! We must have accidentally hit ourselves really hard in the head with a rainbow flag or something. You don’t have to look very far into Yoho’s other comments at that same town

hall to determine who might have a head injury, however. Take, for example, his claim that the Affordable Care Act is racist. Against white people. Because it imposes a tax on tanning beds. Which are apparently only for white people. Who want skin cancer. As is their right in the God Blessed American Constitution. I mean, obviously the tax has nothing to do with the healthcare costs involved in treating people who gave themselves cancer on purpose. It’s because Obama hates whitey. “It’s a racist tax,” Yoho told the audience. And they went nuts. He went on, “I had an Indian doctor in our office the other day, very dark skin, with two non-dark-skin people, and I asked this to him. I said, ‘Have you ever been to a tanning booth?’ and he goes, ‘No, no need.’ So therefore, it’s a racist tax and I thought I might need to get to a sun-tanning booth so I can come out and say I’ve been disenfranchised because I got taxed because of the color of my skin.” So much brilliance there it’s nearly blinding. First of all, “non-dark-skin people” is totally how white people talk about other white people. All the time. Secondly, fuck this guy for making light (seriously, no pun intended) of racial minorities being disenfranchised in this country. Especially since Yoho is from Florida, with a long and continuing history of racism and where tanning is free if you just go outside. I hope Yoho does go tanning. And I hope he tans so much he gets purged from the voting rolls in Florida, like so many other “dark-skin people” have been. ■

Parents, protection and pee politics On Aug. 12, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB1266 into law. AB1266, also knows as the School Success and Opportunity Act, ensures that students are permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and can use facilities consistent with their gender identity, regardless of what’s listed on the student’s school or other records. This bill will allow transgender students to fully participate in their school’s curriculum. They’ll be able to participate in physical education, having an experience in line with others of their preferred gender. This will play a role in their ability to graduate — they need P.E. just like everyone else, after all — and will play a big part of their success in life in the future. Of course, not everyone

is cheering this law. Many on the right, still licking their wounds over their loss at the Supreme Court over Proposition 8, have latched onto AB1266. The argument has been put forth that this law violates the privacy rights of all non-transgender students, as if there is not a lock on the bathroom stalls today. Still, they say that rather than help foster equality and help transgender students succeed, the bill will allow adolescent boys into girls’ restrooms and changing facilities, presumably to ogle the opposite sex. Yes, the so-called “bathroom meme,” again. This is, of course, ridiculous. This implies that a non-transgender boy is going to go through the hassles, the personal discomfort and the fears of ostracism from family and friends that goes hand-inhand with being transgen-

der, just to eye pubescent girls? Does this sound at all logical? I’m sure than any budding sex offenders will find easier ways to get their kicks than going through the difficult process of coming out as transgender. Other arguments put forth from conservatives include the Traditional Values Coalition arguing that this law will “encourage youth as young as 5 to question their sex and gender,” and the Pacific Justice Institute stating that this could “victimize” a student “who is prevented from playing on a sports team because someone from the opposite gender took their place.” Still, most trot out bathrooms and locker rooms first and foremost, even trying to falsely claim that AB1266 makes school facilities somehow “co-ed.” The more I hear arguments about why transgender people should not be

allowed to use the facilities of their preferred gender, the more I feel that it’s not about protecting people as it is about somehow punishing transgender people. That by forcing them to use facilities opposite their identity, and putting them into risky, dangerous situations, they’ll simply “fly straight” or otherwise “learn their lesson.” Several conservative groups are now starting the process of overturning AB1266 at the ballot box. They now have a little less than 90 days to gather a bit more than 500,000 signatures in order to put it to the people of California. Parents want to make sure their kids are safe. What the opponents of

AB1266 are doing is trying to tell all parents in California that AB1266 is directly threatening the well being of their children. Those of us who are trans, and those who are our allies, need to speak to that. And not to the Traditional Values Coalition or Pacific Justice Institute, but to all those other parents. We need to show them that AB1266 does nothing to harm their children, and provide good resources for them and their kids. We also need to show them that AB1266 provides for the safety and success of those students who are transgender — because it does. This law is the first of its kind, but it is not the first

time a school district has issued similar rules. For example, the Los Angeles Unified School District, which serves over 670,000 students, already has a similar policy in place. No, none of the fears espoused by the aforementioned conservative groups has come to pass in that district. Parents just want what’s best for their children. We need to help all parents see that AB1266 doesn’t hurt their kids, and helps other kids. Back to school for LGBT parents Once again, the new school year looms, and the back-to-school ads that started at the end of June finally seem to have some relevance. For many of us LGBT parents, the new school year brings with it once again the question of how accepting and inclusive our children’s teachers and classmates will be. Here are four things we can do to prepare our children and ourselves for the coming year.

Immigration and same-sex marriage FAQ, part two By Marco Pignone III, Esq. Special to PGN Thanks to the Supreme Court decision in U.S. v. Windsor, which overturned a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, gay and lesbian immigrants can apply for green cards through their U.S. citizen or green-card-holding spouses. Here are the answers to some common questions regarding the immigration process. Question: My partner and I are planning to get married, but he is currently outside of the United States. Can I file a petition for him before he comes to the U.S.? Answer: Yes, but you would be filing a fiancé visa petition rather than a marriage petition unless you will be visiting your partner to register your marriage first. U.S. immigration law allows you to file a petition for a fiancé and the legal requirements are that you have met in person within the last two years, that you intend to marry within 90 days of your fiancé entering the U.S. and that your fiancé then files a green-card application in the United States. For couples who have a significant amount of evidence of their relationship already, a fiancé petition can be a good solution. For other couples who have relatively little documentary evidence, it often makes more sense for the marriage to be registered, as the additional trip to see each other in person can serve as additional evidence if it is well-documented. Question: My partner entered the United States illegally many years ago by using a fake passport and has never been arrested by the immigration officials. Can I submit a marriage petition for my partner after we get married? Answer: The answer is yes, but because your partner may have committed fraud, the Immigration Service could deny the green-card application. An immigrant who committed fraud has a couple of problems. If the immigrant was never arrested, there may not be any evidence that he or she was inspected at the border, and those who simply cross over the border without inspection, such as the majority of illegal Mexican immigrants, are not eligible to apply for green cards in the United States (although there is a special process called the stateside waiver that may allow them to get green cards depending on the specific facts of the case). If your partner can prove inspection at the border, perhaps by submitting the fake passport to the Immigration Service, then he or she will still need what is called a “waiver,” which would forgive the fraud if you can prove extreme hardship to you, the U.S. citizen spouse, if your partner is deported. The

law has established a high legal standard for fraud waivers, and winning such cases is often possible, but the process is much more difficult than in a standard case in which the immigrant entered the country legally. Question: Are marriage or fiancé petitions ever denied by the Immigration Service? Answer: Unfortunately, yes, and I have seen many cases denied for a variety of reasons. Depending on the specific facts of the case, and depending on which immigration officer you happen to get at your interview, you may have a difficult time getting your case approved, especially if you do not have much documentary evidence. Factors that can cause a case to be denied include living in separate residences (even if the separation is work-related), having little or no documentary evidence,

The immigration officers regularly see fake marriages as immigrants attempt to get green cards when they are not qualified, and for this reason, many officers are extremely skeptical and are looking for any reason to deny a marriage petition. Most officers are fair, but occasionally, I see cases where the immigration officer clearly intended to continue asking questions until the couple slipped up and provided conflicting testimony, which can happen even to real married couples. For this reason, I always prepare my clients very carefully for their interviews, asking them many questions that immigration officers frequently ask in marriage interviews. its Russian sister city. “We haven’t had a conversation with the administration on what they will do with that, but we do have a plan to introduce a resolution,” Engler said. “We have high hopes that a large amount of Council people will be in support. If the mayor doesn’t want to sever the ties, there are further steps that we can take but we are hoping he will be in agreement with the resolution.” According to McDonald, the International Visitors Council, which oversees the Sister Cities program, received an email last month from Nizhny Novgorod officials asking for advice from Philadelphia about a new law concerning political opposition, which McDonald said the administration sees as a positive sign. “The Nizhny Novgorod representatives said they didn’t know how to work with opposition and reached out to us to learn how Philadelphia handles it, referencing London’s Hyde Park where free speech is legal,” he said. “We see this as a positive sign, especially since Nizhny Novgorod was a leader in democratic reform in the 1990s. We can only continue to offer meaningful assistance to Nizhny Novgorod if the sister cities relationship is intact.” McDonald added that the administration believes there are other ways to communicate Philadelphia’s support for the LGBT community in Russia. “Maintaining our sister cities relationship doesn’t weaken our own commitment to LGBT civil rights and the struggle for human rights. We believe it is more constructive to find ways to support LGBT people there, to let them know we’re aware of their struggles and support them in solidarity,” he said, noting the city hopes to use means such as social media to promote Philadelphia’s LGBT community to Nizhny Novgorod and other locales. “It can show that we care and that we know what they’re going through, and that we had been there, too. While not on the same scale, Philadelphia’s own LGBT people have had to fight for their rights, a fight that continues to be waged. People in other countries see our freedoms but don’t always know what we went through to get them.” McDonald contended that severing the sister-cities relationship could prevent that message from getting to Russia. “If ties to our sister city are to be cut, let it be the Russians who want us stopped from showing what freedom, human rights and acceptance really are.” The effort to reach out to Russia is also gaining traction statewide. This week, State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-17th Dist.) introduced “To Russia with Rainbows,” a three-part resolution that calls for the protection of LGBT athletes and spectators at the 2014 Olympic games. ■

NPT: Yeah, You Know Me SEPTA’s Smart Move to Smart Cards

f all goes well (and that may be a bigger “if” than the powers that be will admit), SEPTA tickets will be as obsolete as the Buffalo nickel a year from now. The move away from tokens toward New Pay�� the transition to an electronic payment systems. Call it the Orange Line to the 21st century. �� TA-branded card available for purchase at all transit stations, Center City Regional Rail hubs and other SEPTA sales locations. In addition, customers will be able to use their own devices—such as compliant �� allowing “customers who wish to continue using cash under NPT. . . to purchase one-way rail fares and make transactions at the fare boxes on buses and trolleys.” We applaud SEPTA’s move and recognize that any change of this magnitude is not easy. At a public hearing held by SEPTA to introduce NPT, the Daily News�� “Willie Pollins called it ‘crazy.’ Judy Mackey called it ‘dangerous.’ Dozens of their fellow riders packing SEPTA’s public hearings Wednesday agreed that the transit agency’s New Payment Technology fare-collection system, debuting in 2014, could leave a lot of people feeling dumbfounded about smart cards. Pollins imagined a rush-hour smart card-mageddon as thousands of desperate regional-rail riders tried to get through the proposed card-reading turnstiles in time to catch their trains. ‘Even now, people knock you down the steps to get to their trains,’ said Pollins, who commutes to Philadelphia daily from Wilmington. ‘Putting turnstiles into regionalrail stations is a crazy idea. If somebody’s fumbling for his smart card or the turnstile’s having �� It may take SEPTA more time and effort to educate its ridership about the NPT, particularly if its ridership �� bit steeper than SEPTA bargained. But SEPTA seems to recognize the task at hand, saying, “We know change can be hard. he lives of a group of teenagers from the cities of Chihuahua and Juárez, Mexico, and the lives of eight teenagers �� streets. There, a mural depicting an Aztec calendar-inspired map of South Philadelphia displays the hopes and fears, frustrations and heartbreak, �� called “Aquí y Allá (Here and There).” To lead artist Michelle Angela Ortiz, it all feels full circle. Born to a Colombian mother and Puerto Rican father in the Italian Market, an area bursting with immigrants, the professional artist and cultural program manager says, “I wanted to build a structure that I know can evolve.” ��

�� Flores, Juan Carlos Reyes, Oscar Gallegos and Antonio Leal) worked with young people to create transportable murals on cloth panels, which traveled with the four artists to Philadelphia. Here, they worked with Ortiz in conducting a series of writing, street-art and mural-technique workshops with young Mexican immigrants and other young ��

Consulate in Juarez and was supported with grants from the Mural Arts Program and Philadelphia Academies, Inc. �� located on 1515 South 6th Street depicts two worlds that are interconnected. It resembles compasses, which direct the viewer to the place where the young artist featured in the mural lives. The goal of “Aquí y Allá,” Ortiz says, “is to empower the youth through this exchange and �� voice. . . . I want them to discover that they are not alone and that others also suffer from the impact of immigration and violence due to lack of resources and racial/ ethnic intolerance.” She says, “In some cases, especially in Juárez, the biggest issue is drug violence and violence against women. . . . Here in Philadelphia, [young people] also talked about the violence that exists against them and against their �� of walking down the right street and being cautious of how you’re perceived.” Jonathan Farbowitz, program associate at Scribe Video Center, which cosponsored the Street Movies event at which a documentary about the mural was shown, says, “It’s really cool to see groups taking the reins and documenting themselves and their work.” �� by the young people’s resilience. “These children have gone through so much in their lives,” she says. “It’s heartbreaking to hear what they’ve gone through. But they have such a strong sense of resilience and are still trying to move forward.”

about doing it. I told my kids that I would be here no matter what. And here I am. I gambled that the schools would be open and there would be football. I told all my kids to prepare as if there was going to be football. We didn’t lose one player, to my knowledge. I know it was unsettling for a lot of people all over the city, though.” Furthermore, George Washington may be one of the few Public League schools to add �� send additional help to Cohen and his staff. That would be a bonus that few public schools experience. “We’ll know that later on,” he said. “It will be hard for someone to make the team now. If you missed spring practices and weren’t in communication with us in the spring and summer, it will set you back. But we’re open to seeing who may come out after school opens in September. We are expecting

on Cohen thinks his life would be different if he were a high school football coach at a suburban school, given his track record and the success he has had as the main man at George Washington (GW) since 1985. “I’d be the mayor if I was at a school in the suburbs” he said. “Anything I needed to help the football program, I would get. But it is what it is. I know the �� Cohen opened preseason practices on Aug. 9, welcoming 55 kids to the gridiron. Practice has been business as usual at GW, a team that has won six of the last eight high school public league championships. “I always feel that we will be pretty good,” he said. “I always expect to be competitive and be in the race for a AAAA Public League crown and the state playoffs.” But Cohen admits that this off-season involved the most turmoil, questions and doubts he has ever endured �� Monday afternoon, he knew many coaches as well as educators were stepping down or had stepped down, due to the summer news that the school district was in upheaval and that there may not be money for sports this �� be open and that there would be varsity football this season. “It was a big unrest for a lot of people,” he said. “I know a lot of my peers stepped down or talked

‘Drag Race’ winner’s cabaret duo to heat up Voyeur By Larry Nichols larry@epgn.com Jinkx Monsoon, winner of the latest season of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race,” is maintaining a hectic schedule, splitting her suddenly high-profile time between drag performances and her popular cabaret show “The Vaudevillians,” which is coming Aug. 23 to Voyeur Nightclub. Monsoon, the alter ego and creation of Portland, Ore., native Jerick Hoffer, launched “The Vaudevillians” before appearing on season five of “Drag Race.” In the act, Ms. Kitty Witless (Monsoon) and Dr. Dan Von Dandy (Major Scales) are finally thawed out from an avalanche in Antarctica — where they’d been frozen since the 1920s — only to discover a number of pop acts had recorded versions of their songs. They immediately hit the road to perform their music the way they wrote it. “The Vaudevillians” has been wildly successful in New York City, and the team is making its Philadelphia debut at Voyeur. “The premise of our show allows us to do vaudeville covers of pop songs,” Monsoon said about the duo’s popularity. “A lot of people like to hear their favorite pop songs re-imagined in the way that we do it. I think it’s like hearing a remix or a cover of a song. It’s fun to hear a new

take on something you’ve heard a million times. It causes you to listen to the song in a whole new way and that is what is exciting for people.” Monsoon added that the pair keeps the show fresh by continually changing it. “The show is constantly taking new shapes and forms. When we started out, we were just performing short sets in a variety show. The first time we did a full-length show, it was extremely different than what it was today. After four years of polishing and us honing in on the characters and developing a shared stage presence between the two of us, it’s a more involved and concise interpretation of the show.” We asked if the character of Kitty Witless is all that different from Jinkx Monsoon. “I always say Jinkx is the face of all my drag characters,” Monsoon said. “There’s a little bit of Jinkx in all my characters. Jinkx and Kitty Witless have a lot of similarities and a lot of differences. I think they are in the same family. I almost think Kitty could be Jinkx’s great-grandmother. They are both kind of self-absorbed and showboat-y. Kitty is a lot more selfish and she’s willing to go a lot further to get what she wants than Jinkx.” Monsoon is no stranger to the stage, having appeared in musicals like “Rent,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Hairspray.” She PAGE 28

said her background in theater made her stand out among the other drag performers on “Drag Race.” “I definitely think when it came to the challenges, I had the skills that were required on that show, especially when it came to lip-syncing, acting and comedy,” Monsoon said. “It was a double-edged sword because my commitment to theatricality was also what held me back on the runway. I had more of an old-world theatrical look in drag and less of a modern-day glamour look in drag. I think it gave me what I needed to get as far as I did.” Monsoon also said that spending her formative years in Portland helped shape her as a performer. “The Pacific Northwest is so welcoming and inviting and encouraging of all different kinds of people doing all different types of things that it allowed me to flourish and become passionate about drag in a safe environment,” she said. “Some communities are so competitive with drag and are dominated by the pageant style of drag that who knows if I would have gotten the same kind of support and encouragement from any other community? In Portland and Seattle, there’s a lot more room to explore different forms of drag and all other art forms, so you can experiment with stuff without the fear of being torn down for it.” Now that winning “Drag Race” has made Jinkx Monsoon a household name in drag circles, she’s juggling as many gigs as her schedule will allow. “It takes a huge amount of commitment,” she said about keeping her cabaret and acting jobs going, along with her drag commitments. “It’s time-consuming. I pretty much spend my weeks in New York performing ‘The Vaudevillians,’ and I spend my weekends making guest appearances on my tour. It’s nonstop with very few days off. It’s the most exhausted and happiest I’ve ever been.” Monsoon has played some gender-bending roles on stage but said she didn’t have an obvious favorite. “Hedwig always goes to the top of my

list, but I was really surprised at the impact that playing Angel in ‘Rent’ had on me,” she said. “I came back from ‘Drag Race’ and immediately started rehearsing ‘Rent.’ I was still completely shell-shocked and readjusting to normal human life after being kept in the little reality hamster cage for a month. I was very wide open and pretty vulnerable when I was working on ‘Rent’ and I was able to let the story into me in a way that I don’t think I have with a show before. I really took on the character and Angel and his story. I was taking seriously the work we were doing in ‘Rent.’ So I think that is now one of the more profound experiences that I have had.” Monsoon said that hopefully the spotlight shining on her from “Drag Race” will open opportunities to perform drag and theater at the same time. “My dream has always been to marry the two,” she said. “I’ve played some male roles in theater but I’ve also played a lot of female roles. I see myself bringing drag to a lot of my work outside of drag. Because of the show and its notoriety and the skill that I’ve gained as a performer, I think that’s what led to me playing Velma Von Tussle in ‘Hairspray’ in Seattle, and I think it will lead to other female roles where I’m combining legitimate theater and drag knowhow together. That is what I’d ultimately like to do.” In the meantime, on top of all of the performances, Monsoon is working on making music with her “Vaudevillians” partner. “We’re working on an album right now, which will feature original music by Major Scales,” she said. “Then I just plan on taking on as much legitimate theater work that allows me to bring drag into theater. I hope to one day play Hedwig again. It’s my personal dream to be Neil Patrick Harris’ understudy when he works on ‘Hedwig’ on Broadway. Sean Doan: Dapper Doan People often ask me where I get the subjects for my Portraits. Most of the recommendations come from friends and family — my mother’s always chatting people up, telling potential subjects that her daughter writes for PGN. Some come from people who have been profiled. A good number come from dear readers like you and, every once in a while, I’ll just see someone who looks interesting and approach (which can be interesting in a non-gay setting). At a recent Our Night Out event, I kept finding myself staring at a very dapper fellow sitting at the next table. Sean Doan had his circle of friends laughing as he engaged them in conversation. I decided to find out more about the man. PGN: In the beginning ... SD: I was born in Vietnan. I came to this country when I was about 6 years old, to Allentown. I didn’t know a word of English. Now I know a few more. PGN: I’d say so! We closed down Our Night Out. SD: I know, it was fun. I love Philadelphia. I’ve been here about four years; before that I was in the suburbs off the Main Line. I love living right in the heart of things. I love the hustle and bustle of the streets, horns honking, people yelling, everything. I‘m definitely a city guy. I could never go back to the suburbs. PGN: Tell me about the family. What did the parents do? SD: They’re both retired but my father was a professor and my mother was a nurse. [Laughs.] And I have an older brother who, in typical Vietnamese fashion, owns a nail salon. PGN: Do you have any memories from Vietnam? SD: None whatsoever. None. I just know what I’ve seen in textbooks and from pictures. It looks wonderful but I have no desire to go back. PGN: Really? I’d love to go there. SD: It’s supposed to be a big tourist destination now, but that flight? Oh, no! I just couldn’t handle it. My brother and other relatives go back all the time but it’s too much for me. I’m too impatient to sit on a plane for 20-plus hours. PGN: How much of the family is here now? SD: Everybody. Over the years, every last one has migrated here. Uncles, cousins, grandmothers; there’s no one left to visit there! PGN: Tell me about a favorite relative. SD: My mom. I’m very fortunate. My mom and dad separated when I was young.

I have an aunt and uncle who don’t have any kids and they became second and third parents. We’re Catholics and they actually met in the seminary. My aunt was a nun and my uncle was a priest. PGN: What? SD: I know, they’re going to kill me for telling this, but they met and fell in love. They left the religious community about 30 years ago and have been inseparable ever since. I’m very blessed because most kids nowadays are lucky to have even one good parent and I have three. I love all three of them; picking one is like picking your favorite child. But if I had to, I’d say my mother. We have a special relationship. We don’t always see eye-to-eye on issues, but over the years we’ve built a bond that gets stronger the older I get. I’ve really learned to appreciate my parents, all three. PGN: So what was life like in Allentown? SD: Boring! There was one gay bar there — no, two.

PGN: What was a favorite toy? SD: Oh gosh, Sheera. Remember Sheera and the power of Grayskull? I also liked the original Transformers. I loved them, and what else? I didn’t have Barbie dolls, I wasn’t that gay yet, but I loved Care Bears and Garbage Pail Kids. Remember they had little flash cards with them? PGN: And what was your brother like? He was a year-and-a-half older? SD: I actually didn’t grow up with him. When my mom and dad separated, he stayed with my dad in Vietnam and I came to the States with my mom. He didn’t move here until he was 23. So I was pretty much raised like an only child. We’ve bonded since he’s been here. He’s your typical straight guy, likes to go out on dates and has four kids. PGN: [Laughs.] Still going on dates with four kids? SD: No, no, no, no. He’d better not, his wife would kill him!

PGN: Ha! I meant as a kid. I’m assuming you weren’t clubbing in grade school. SD: Whoops. Well, it was a very white suburban area. So we always felt we had to prove ourselves. People just saw us as a minority, like, “What are these people all about? Are they collecting welfare, what’s up with them?” We tried to show that we were churchgoing, hard-working, stand-up citizens and as a result we were pretty much accepted. My mom bought her house in 1986, then my cousin bought the house next-door in 1987, my aunt bought the house on the other side in 1990, then another cousin bought a house a block away and it kept growing until we had about eight houses clustered in the area.

PGN: Do you have dual citizenship? SD: No, I’m a U.S. citizen, but it can get tricky. PGN: What was a favorite class in school? SD: I was never a bookwormish person. I’d probably say social studies. Do they still call it that? History, whatever. I was not your typical Asian, I hated math! I was horrible at it.

PGN: “Jem and the Holograms”? SD: You don’t know “Jem and the Holograms”? Oh my gosh, Jem was truly, truly outrageous and she had a special pair of earrings that gave her magical powers. It was cool. PGN: Skipping ahead, did you go to college? SD: I did. I went to a Catholic high school and then went on to Catholic college, DeSales University, where I studied business administration and human resources. I worked during the day and went to school at night. I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with myself, so I went back after I graduated and I’m actually pursing a Ph.D in criminal justice now. PGN: What was your first job? SD: My aunt and uncle owned a seafood store and I worked the cash register when I was about 10. Then when I was about 15, I worked at Burger King, the Home of the Whopper. PGN: What was your worst incident at work? SD: Got burned by the deep fryer. I still have the scar. PGN: And what’s your day job while you’re in night school? SD: I’ve worked in the telecommunications industry for 17 years.

PGN: Your own Kennedy compound! So did you still face discrimination, people thinking you were on welfare when in fact your father was a professor? SD: A little. Actually, he stayed in Vietnam, just my mom moved to the States. PGN: Ah, that would make it hard to see him very often. SD: Yes, and visiting Vietnam isn’t like going to Mexico back and forth; there’s a lot more paperwork involved.

PGN: That must have been odd to suddenly have a brother who was full-grown. SD: Yes, but I did make him into a diva. He wears Deisel and Armani Exchange, he’s a true metrosexual now. That was my gift to him. PGN: How did you first figure out that you were gay? SD: Grade school. While all the boys were knocking each other around playing tackle football and wallowing in the mud

PGN: That’s exactly how long I was at Sisters! SD: I heard about that. So many bars are closing. Splash Bar in New York closed after 22 years. It was iconic, I remember going there in my 20s. A good night out used to be dancing all night and coming home smelling like cigarettes with a bunch of phone numbers on cocktail napkins. I think that now, with the Internet and sites like Grindr and Scruff or whatever the hell they use — I don’t use that stuff — people don’t need to go out to meet people. PGN: Good point. My nephew just turned 16 and is in no hurry to get his license. We were just talking about PAGE 34

Before I start, I have to mention that organizers of Gay Games 9 have improved the event’s website immensely! There is a plethora of great information and it is very well-organized. In fact, as I was verifying information while writing this, I got sidetracked for about an hour checking out all the great sidebars. There will be plenty of games-oriented and Cleveland-sponsored thing to do in the evening, off and wee hours in addition to the non-sanctioned international headboard-notching competition. With the opening and closing ceremonies as the bookends to a week of athleticism, let’s take a minute to talk about the mission and purpose of the Gay Games. While competition is at the heart of the games, there are also the cross-cultural exchanges and socializing that make the games more than just sports battles. Every day of that week, there will be opportunities to eat, drink, sing, dance and revel with a tremendous group of men and women, all ambassadors for their home countries. Start with the Festival Village on your visit. Open through the duration of the games, the village will be a home away from home for everyone involved, from athletes to sponsors. You can expect

music, food, entertainment and dozens of special moments throughout the week. Musically, two of the biggest events of the week are the band concert Aug. 11 and a mass choral concert Aug. 13. Visitors have an opportunity to hear hundreds of LGBTs raise their horns, drums and voices in song. And isn’t music one of the common languages of the universe? These two musical events are expected to be among the most popular special events of the week. In addition to the concerts, there will be arts events hosted at theaters, galleries, museums and, of course, clubs and restaurants as part of the celebration. Gordon Square Arts District is home to many of Cleveland’s LGBT residents. And why not? The galleries, boutiques, restaurants and studios that congregate along Detroit Avenue are a huge draw. The venues plan to host multiple special events during the games. Other ’hoods include Ohio City on the Cuyahoga River with its micro-breweries and West Side Market, and historic Tremont near Lincoln Park, which also is home to restaurants, lounges, boutiques and galleries. The cultural center of Cleveland, University Circle, with its park-like setting, is the near-epicenter of the city’s grandest museums, gardens and

performing-arts center. As these neighborhoods gear up for the world-gay influx with their own special events, suffice it to say you can expect street parties and revelry to fuel the local gay fever. Hopefully, as you look at where your competitions are and plan for lodging, you can incorporate these tidbits and make your visit even more enjoyable. Finish out the summer with A.C.’s boutique hotel By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com Where can one find truffled mac ’n’ cheese, walk on glittering floors and get pampered beneath their own beach umbrella? The Chelsea in Atlantic City, N.J. The Chelsea is nestled in the perfect location — between the hustle and bustle of Atlantic City’s casinos and a quiet stretch of boardwalk. With a bright neon pink sign, it is hard to miss The Chelsea, and what lies inside creates an equally bright experience. The Chelsea is the type of hotel that makes guests feel Hollywood-famous the

minute they step through the door. With valet parking, modern décor and a friendly staff, the hotel excels at making visitors feel both welcomed and valued. Opened in 2008, The Chelsea was the first non-casino hotel to hit A.C. in decades. While there aren’t any slots, the boutique hotel itself gives guests a plethora of options for entertainment and relaxation, with its Sea Spa, saltwater pools, fitness center, two restaurants and numerous bars — all of which tend to cater to a younger crowd. The guest rooms are among the hotel’s gorgeous aspects and are situated both in the Chelsea Luxe tower and the lower-cost Annex. King luxe rooms feature complimentary wireless Internet, a 42-inch flatscreen TV, custom mini bar and daily maid service. Many rooms also include breath-

taking ocean views. If you are a foodie, you can vary your dining experience from Dining on the Fifth Floor to Teplitzky’s. Dining on the Fifth Floor can make one feel like a movie star — from its upscale décor only second to its ocean views. But, if you don’t have a movie star-sized wallet, the menu has something for every taste and price range. If you are like me and could have mac ’n’ cheese for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then the white truffle mac ’n’ cheese ($6) is a must. Also outstanding was the roasted chicken with lemon pepper and broccoli rabe ($20) and filet mignon ($27). One could make a meal just from the sides — sea-salted string fries ($5), roasted garlic redskin mashed ($5), sautéed spinach ($5) and grilled asparagus ($5). Teplitzky’s is The Chelsea’s diner-inspired restaurant. Breakfast foods are usually a make-or-break deal and, sadly, Teplitzky’s did not deliver for us this time. The best part of our meal? The coffee. The worst? Overcooked eggs and not-so-friendly service. The Chelsea does offer extensive nightlife options for a variety of crowds. For those interested in drink and dance, The Fifth Floor, right next to the restaurant, offers a boutique-style nightlife experience for those who love to party. The Fifth Floor features an extensive menu of handcrafted cocktails, DJs and an area for dancing. For those who enjoy a more “open” arena, the Cabana Club offers a Las Vegastype scene with a pool. Another fun space is The Chelsea’s private beach club. Guests interested in lounging on the beach can get a complimentary beach umbrella and chairs. Staff will gladly bring you and your guests both — as well as food and non-alcoholic drinks — so you can soak up the rays in style. One of the only letdowns at The Chelsea was the valet service during the checkout process. First, the line was extremely long, and it took 30 minutes to reach our car. And watch out for an added fee if you don’t move your car after check-out. But overall, The Chelsea offers amenities and an atmosphere that those young — and young at heart — will enjoy. ■

how when we were kids you couldn’t wait to start driving so that you could meet up with your friends at the mall or wherever. Now they just all text and Facetime each other. SD: It’s crazy. Since I work in the telecommunications business I see the stats. There are some kids who send 7,000 texts a month! PGN: What’s in store for the future? SD: I want to do something that serves the LGBT community. I want to make a difference. I’d love to do something that helps unite us. There’s so much division and we could use something to help us create bonds. There’s too much discrimination amongst the community. Bullying is such a problem too. PGN: Break down what you mean by discrimination. SD: It’s hard to articulate, but we are very cliqueish in Philadelphia. I think in part because Philadelphia is so affordable, many of us live and work and socialize all in the same area. As a result, we know everyone’s lives and business for better or worse. It makes it hard for anyone to penetrate the scene. Whereas in New York or a lot of cities, it’s too expensive for the average person to live in Center City so it’s not as much of a hard-core group of all the same people. We discriminate on all sorts of things — socioeconomic status, the kind of person they’re attracted to, drug use, you name it. PGN: Yeah, I interviewed Jay McCarroll last week and he spoke about how mean people were to him until he became famous. You’re such a handsome fella, what discrimination have you faced? SD: You’re too kind, Suzi. There’s a lot of superficiality in the community. For me, I’ve just learned that you have to be comfortable in your own skin. I love RuPaul’s show, especially at the end where she gives a quote for the day. One

of my favorites is, “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else?” It’s so, so true. Once you have that, you won’t give a fuck about what people think. When I go out, I do whatever outrageous thing I want, whether it’s throwing on fishnets and stilettos or rocking a suit and tie. I live life for me. If you need the acceptance of others, you’ll never be happy. PGN: Tell me about coming out. SD: Because I’m of Asian background, it’s not something that’s exalted. I.e., I wouldn’t exactly invite the folks to ride the float with me at a gay Pride event. It’s tolerated but not celebrated. But I act the same way here or at home or at work, always have. You accept it or you don’t. PGN: Partnered? SD: Single. Very single. Please note that! Hey, since this is a newspaper interview, say that I’m 5-foot-8, 135 pounds, muscular, 24 years old with 2.5 percent body fat. PGN: Will do! What prompts you to want to give back? SD: I grew up in a family where we were taught that if you have something, you share it. If someone needs help, you step up and help them. I don’t know if it’s from my mom being a nurse or what, but life is not about how much you accumulate, it’s about helping your community. Whatever you do, if you’re an engineer or a janitor, you can be a productive member of society and share your talents with others. We all have a gift to share and I think it’s an obligation to do so. PGN: You seem so self-assured. Where does that come from? SD: I think being Asian and gay both carry stigmas. It was tough getting into the gay community — that discrimination we spoke about — but instead of crying about the fact that I’ll never be 6-foot-3 and muscular, I strive to be the best me I can.

PGN: Do you find a reverse racism, as in being sought after because you’re Asian? Eroticized? SD: Oh, all the time, all the time! They’ll think of me as something exotic [laughs], but as soon as I open my mouth, I destroy all those illusions! I think because of the way I dress and carry myself, they imagine I’m some kind of little gay Asian bottom boy, but as they get to know me, those stereotypes go away. I don’t even like using chopsticks. This is funny, there are a bunch of Asian restaurants on Washington Avenue that serve pho, the Vietnamese noodle dish. My friends and I go there and I’m always like, “Excuse me, can I have a fork please?” The people always look at me like I’m some kind of traitor as I sit there with all my non-Asian friends who are using chopsticks. PGN: I had an ex whose parents were from China but she was from Jersey. She actually spoke Chinese but she would get mad if someone, especially guys, would try to talk to her in Mandarin. She’d be like, “Dude, I’m from Piscataway. I have no idea what you’re saying.” SD: That’s funny! I actually speak fluent Vietnamese too. PGN: Hobbies? SD: I never participated in sports but now I find I really like keeping in shape. I go to the gym five days a week. I do Bikram yoga and I’ve started pole dancing. It takes a lot of strength! It’s no joke. It’s like gymnastics. A lot of people associate it with sex and seduction and it can incorporate the art of seduction, but you have to have a lot of core and upper-body strength. And you get crazy pole burns; you’re holding your whole body up with just your thighs sometimes. PGN: Do you know Alfie Sosa? I did his column, he’s big into pole dancing. SD: Yes, yes! I saw him perform at Boys of Summer. He’s amazing. I’m nowhere near that level.

PGN: You’re a very dapper dresser. SD: I love to shop, that’s my other hobby. I love clothes. My favorite designer is Versace. I try to wear something Versace every day, whether it’s a belt or tie or just the cologne. PGN: What’s a favorite line from a movie? SD: I don’t have the patience to watch movies but I do love “The Devil Wears Prada.” It’s my all-time favorite movie, no big surprise. I love the scene during the interview where Meryl Streep’s character looks Anne Hathaway up and down and says, “Before today you never heard of me, you don’t read as runway and you have no sense of style ...” Anne starts to interject and Streep says, “No, no. That wasn’t a question.” And I loved the way whenever she gave a task or assignment, she’d say, “That’s all” and wave people away. So funny. And I love RuPaul, especially the way she claps! “Silence ... bring back.” That’s my girl. PGN: Are you a summer or winter person? SD: Summer, without a doubt. I go to the beach all the time. I prefer the heat. Less clothing! PGN: What celebrity would you want to do a movie with? SD: Lady Gaga. I’m infatuated with her. Or Cher, I love anything to do with her. PGN: I interviewed Chaz Bono for the column. SD: You did? That’s awesome. And now you’re doing me! New menu adds some twists at the Tail Food & Drink

By Larry Nichols larry@epgn.com We recently made a return trip to The Twisted Tail, 509 S. Second St., after hearing that the Bourbon House with the Southern-themed menu had gotten itself a new chef and menu. With its bluesy music and rock ’n’ roll-inspired roadhouse décor, we probably would have enjoyed ourselves without sampling the arsenal of libations that were available. But we couldn’t resist, especially with more than 80 bourbons at our disposal, not to mention the peach cobbler moonshine. The latter was decadently sweet and powerful and succeeded in putting us in a good mood. Grilling is definitely the forte at The Twisted Tail, and many of our favorites were the grilled sides and small-plate items. The corn on the cob ($5) was perfection — buttery and juicy with a spicy sweet red-pepper marmalade that brightened up the alreadyfantastic dish. The oyster mushrooms ($7) had a pleasantly light flavor and texture and the shishito peppers had a slight kick without being too bold. The only dish that survived the menu changes was the crawfish mac ’n’ cheese ($9), which we remembered enjoying the last time, so we sampled
