40 th anniversary season P HIL A D E L P H I A T H E AT R E CO M PA NY at the
from the executive producing director Dear Friends, We’re delighted to end our 40th Anniversary Season with Murder for Two, an unapologetically daffy musical whodunit by the talented composing team of Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair. It has been directed by Scott Schwartz whose work many of you might remember from our production of Seminar by Theresa Rebeck a few seasons back. Whether you are a mystery fan or even just a musical fan, we know that you will enjoy the tour-de-force performances by our two performers who are sure to leave you breathless and wondering how much more can possibly be done with two guys and a piano! Murder for Two concludes a season-long journey through the landscape of contemporary American theatre courtesy of Lisa D’ Amour, John Patrick Shanley, Terrence McNally and Kimber Lee. For those of you who have been with us throughout this special year, thank you for joining us in our celebration of the genius and diversity of the American playwright. For those of you who are with us just for this performance, we hope you will join us for next year’s season which we are certain will be every bit as exciting! Our season kicks off with Disgraced, Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize winning stunner about identity and the price of assimilation that will inspire endless conversation. We continue with Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery – a “Sherlock” like none you’ve seen before! This dazzling and inventive version of the popular “Baskerville” story is not only a mystery but a celebration of all that is magical about theatre. In January, we present the East Coast premiere of Exit Strategy an electrifying new play by Chicagoan Ike Holter writing about the power struggles around an urban high school targeted for closure. You can see it here at PTC before it moves Off Broadway to Primary Stages. Spring warms up with Sex with Strangers by Laura Eason, a smart and funny pas de deux about two writers in a relationship fraught with desire, simmering competitiveness and a need to sort out their public and private identities. We conclude with a play by one of the most original playwrights at work today when we present the East Coast premiere of Hillary and Clinton by Lucas Hnath. In this fast paced 2008 Primary Election fantasy, Hnath asks us to imagine an alternate universe where a woman named Hillary is trying to become president of a country called the United States of America. With sly humor and astute psychological insight, Hnath spins a provocative story about gender, power and possibilities. Thank you all again for joining us for Murder for Two and we look forward to having you back with us next season for a year packed with ideas, invention and endless possibility. Wishing you all a wonderful summer!

A Humble Apology to Actors
from the Creators of ‘Murder For Two’ By Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair | Posted Nov. 21, 2013, 11:59 a.m.
The following essay was written by MURDER FOR TWO creators, Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair, for Backstage magazine online, which, for over 50 years, has provided casting advice and notices for actors. First of all, knowing this will be read by actors, we wanted to start off by saying sorry. Not because you’re an actor—we think that part is great! We wanted to apologize for writing a show with 14 characters played by only two performers. By our count, that means 12 of you don’t have a job right now because of us. And it gets worse! Let’s say we start playing regionally: times that 12 by X number of regional productions and pretty soon we’ll have hundreds of unemployed actors on our consciences. Again, we’re very, very sorry. But before you consider mur-
dering us at a surprise birthday party— try to see things from our perspective. Try to understand where we were exactly five years ago. Joe was young, confused, and too tall for his own good. He crashed a grip truck while working as a production assistant on a low-budget film starring TV’s own Columbo, Peter Falk. He thought to himself, “What do I do now? How can I put my piano playing to good use? And why is Peter Falk yelling at me?”
Kellen was young, starry-eyed, and redheaded. It was the dead of winter, and he was passing out flyers in Times Square, doing his best to ignore the numbness in his fingers and toes. He wondered, “Where do I go from here? How do I put my red hair to good use? And why is Peter Falk also yelling at me?” (Insert traditional “I want” song here, with backup vocals by the cast of Columbo.) Luckily in our search for a way to break into a seemingly closed-off business, we found each other at the BMI Musical Theatre Writing Workshop, which is basically speed-dating for musical theater composers and lyricists. We teamed up and decided to write the next great American musical, complete with a cast of thousands and a 700-piece orchestra. And then we noticed something; the economy sucked and theaters were scaling back their seasons by replacing flashy musicals with four-person plays. Producers had always been cheap, but now they were being really cheap. And we suddenly realized our first show as two nobody-writers was never going to be a huge, expensive, Broadway spectacle. So we gave ourselves a challenge. How much could we do with absolutely nothing? A few months later that “absolutely nothing” became a staged reading of a silly, intimate musical called “Murder For Two.” (Well, actually it was called “Marcus Stevens IS Detective Marcus IN Detective Marcus Investigates,” but that’s beside the point.) So you see, in creating a two-person show, we weren’t selfishly trying to deprive you of a job, but we were selfishly trying to get ourselves a job. We looked around and did our best to take advantage of the world’s crappy situation. And sometimes that’s the best way to get your metaphorical foot in that allegorical door. Honestly ask yourself what the world is
missing, and do your best to fill that gap. (That sounds dirty, but it’s not.) It’s good advice. And it’s true whether you’re a writer or an actor or probably just about anything else. Like it or not, we seem to be entering an era where being a triple threat isn’t always enough. Sometimes it helps to be a quadruple or even a quintuple threat. Learn an instrument. Practice ventriloquism. If you can find a way to drag around your own lighting rig while playing a harmonium, John Doyle will cast you in literally everything! But back to apologizing. We know it’s unfair, but hopefully we can redeem ourselves in your eyes. Remember, we said our first show would never be a huge, expensive, Broadway spectacle. But things are different now. Our first show is behind us. “Murder For Two” opened at Second Stage Uptown last summer and is now running at New World Stages, something for which we’re immensely grateful. Suddenly we’re getting asked to do awesome things like write essays for Backstage! And while our next show might not include a cast of thousands, we’re pushing for a solid twelve. If our cast sizes continue to grow at this rate, our fifth show will employ 2,592 of you! And that’s great, because “Murder For Two” has taught us something else. Our shows are only as good as the awesome folks actually saying the words out loud—often with, like, emotions and stuff. So in addition to saying sorry, we’d like to say thank you. Thanks for being a part of this crazy, crazy business. It’s the stupidest decision you ever made, but we really appreciate it! Reprinted with permission from Backstage magazine. about our THEATRE The Suzanne Roberts Theatre, designed by Kieran Timberlake Associates, is owned and operated by Philadelphia Theatre Company and is the Company’s first permanent home. PTC is proud that the creation and development of its home, in partnership with Symphony House developer Carl Dranoff, has become a model for civic redevelopment; one that capitalizes on the ability of the arts to reinvigorate districts for residential and commercial revival. The space is contemporary, elegant and urbane, and features a 160’ double height glass facade on the Avenue of the Arts. The interior is defined by a uniquely warm and sculptural 365 seat main stage auditorium with a proscenium arch of interlocking leather tiles, a spacious and contemporary mezzanine, and a planned 100 seat flexible second stage for new play development, intimate performances, and educational programming. Our stage house significantly enhances our ability to respond to the most imaginative visions of our creative teams with its spacious wings, soaring fly gallery, and trapped stage. The Theatre offers a full range of public amenities with an on-site box office, ample public rest rooms, a concession stand, and lobbies designed for patron comfort and engagement with the City visible through large expanses of glass. The grand staircase leads from the main floor to the double height mezzanine lobby. The Theatre’s contemporary universal design makes it one of the country’s most accessible performing arts venues and supports one of PTC’s core values ensuring that our artistry is accessible to everyone in our community.
about suzanne Roberts Philadelphia Theatre Company is honored to name its home after Suzanne Roberts--actress, playwright, director, educator, producer and philanthropist. For more than 40 years, Suzanne has been a leading champion of the Philadelphia theater community. An actress by training, Suzanne has engaged as an artist in meaningful public service with projects as diverse as performing in dramas to inspire the purchase of war bonds during World War II to national appearances in plays discouraging racism and alcoholism. Demonstrating the breadth of her artistry, Suzanne has performed on many stages throughout our region in plays from Shakespeare to A.R. Gurney. She has also performed in a variety of media including radio and television and is well known to audiences as the creator and host of the Emmy Award winning “Seeking Solutions with Suzanne.” One of Suzanne’s lifelong passions has been using theater to improve the lives of young people. Through the Suzanne Roberts Cultural Development Fund, she has supported the outreach work of theater and dance companies in sharing their creativity with school children and young adults.
