Clay Shooting Success with Phil Coley
Goal Setting Module
Goal Setting In driving terms if you don’t have a destination, you will drive around aimlessly. Goal setting is written about for sport, for business and in life coaching. Goal setting is the crucial area for any clay shooter. It is your very own plan of how far you really want to go in your clay shooting. Some shooters just want to improve and have better days when shooting, others are focused on an average and, at the top level, it is about winning. Let’s look at the two most important aspects of goal setting; the first type of goal is an outcome goal - this is a goal that only has one of two options to it – win or lose/achieved or not. The second is a performance goal. Always regarded as the ‘harder to define’ goal, it is based on elements of the performance. Both types of goal are used - those at the very top level will be very focused on outcome goals, with a mix of performance goals. Those moving up through the ranks will be using performance goals and, less frequently, outcome goals. Quick Goals

In clay shooting there are too many shooters using outcome goals. If you solely use outcome goals then negative times will occur as any unreached goals or bad days will lead to more mental downers – only the very strong minded will ever succeed using this goal type. The performance goal is based on all elements of your shooting; areas to improve on, areas of focus and, ultimately, if all performance goals are reached then the outcome will be achieved.
So let’s look at ‘Goal Setting’ rules.
Setting goals is based on a SMART principle: S – Specific Make your goals specific, so the more detail the better. M – Measurable You must be able to measure the goals to progress. A – Achievable They must be achievable but equally not easy. R – Realistic You must be realistic with your goal, otherwise this leads to demotivation. T – Timed You need to have a time frame on each goal, so set timeframes such as monthly, quarterly.

The goals you need to focus on for your shooting will be as follows: Consistent performance: if you gain consistency then you can build on this to the next level. So lets look at Goal Setting for Sporting. The best way to describe this is to take the Pyramid of Success and break it down for your Shooting. Dream Goal –World Champion Long Term – National Champion Mid Term – National Top 10 Short Term Micro & Macro Goals
The Short Term Goals coupled with your Micro & Macro Goals are the building blocks for you to improve in your shooting. Let us look at the detail needed for you to use these effectively. If you want to be a World Champion then what do you need to concentrate on to perform at the very best? The areas would be concentration, determination, relaxation, motivation, technique, gunfit, shotgun, fitness… If you looked at these in even more detail you would start to break down Concentration – mental exercises on a weekly or daily basis to improve your concentration would be a macro goal. Now your goals need to fit into your Training Schedule – a short term performance goal would be an outcome goal of improving by five targets per competition, but the performance goals would be covering concentration, competition preparation etc. The key to this is to show you that by just focusing on a score each time in competition you are building a very unstable foundation.
