A trip to Hipsterland

Visa granted, we are now in Hipsterland.

The White Meat City is a unique 871.000 sq. feet property owned by the Municipality of Copenhagen, Denmark and home of meat companies, creative industries, supermarkets, galleries, and restaurants. It is in other words the Meatpacking District of Copenhagen.

Karriere bar The people behind Karriere are the artist Jeppe Hein and his sister Lærke Hein. The brainwave of pooling their talents and professional resources to create a venue hit them both. Jeppe’s sculptures involve viewers in a very direct way, creating playful, communication-based situations. Lærke Hein brings her experience from bar/restaurant management at Copenhagen’s most exclusive nightlife spots to the project. Peter Kirkhoff Eriksen is head of public programmes presenting artist talks, performances, soundbased artworks and a newspaper on art.

Both a state of mind and even a fashion sense, hipsterism is about independent thought, shunning of mainstream preferences, counterculture, and progressive politics. Hipsters like to perceive themselves as being highly creative, intelligent, thoughtful, and witty. Rejecting the common fads of consumerism, hipsters don’t like to ingratiate themselves to thoughtless consuming and prefer to show their independence by making choices that deliberately reflect their desire to openly make cultural statements, whether it’s through the coffee they drink, the clothes they wear, the music they listen to, the way they decorate their living space, or even down to the vocabulary they use. Think “indie” culture and “bohemian” style and you’re getting close to the mark on what it is to be a hipster.

There are only few working Meat Cities left today in the world. The area is mentioned in the travel guide of The New York Times on the 8th of August 2004.

The area is developed by Copenhagen Properties to contain artists, galleries, meat industries, creative and gastronomic trendsetters all blended together in the caracteristic white buildings primarily from 1934.
