We chatted to Ms. Yuka Ishizuka during her visit to Hong Kong where she hosted the Shiseido Professional Season Trend Seminar & Workshop. JOICO also held a two-day ‘Color Trend Seminar & Workshop IN-EXCESS’ with visiting guest artist Ms. Natani Laas. Grandsky International for FEELING hosted their annual ‘FEELING Wavtint Hair Show 2014’ in the company of 2,000 guests, including 600 from Mainland China. Three professional teams were invited to showcase the latest hairstyles and colours for 2015. This month’s management feature discusses ‘Keeping the art of hairdressing fresh, dynamic and alive’. Hairdressers, who are only in this industry just to make money, are making a big mistake. A successful hairdresser needs to constantly push their creativity, explore new ideas and improve their techniques. Disconnect Hair Magazine continues its purpose to build long lasting partnerships with suppliers, Salon owners and Stylists, enabling us all to further enhance our fellow professionals with innovative inspirational trends and artistic expression. A successful hairdresser needs to constantly push their creativity, explore new ideas and improve their techniques. The challenge for the industry is to keep its eyes open for new inspiration and stay open-minded, progressive. Keeping passion alive gives rise to great art and expression. This is the only way Stylists can flourish and become excited about the work they do. Focusing on only making money is harmful to the Hairdressers’ personal development, especially when the industry demands creativity, invention and superb Hairdressing skills. Exploring texture, creative shapes and methods are crucial. Balancing expression and innovation - with the skills and precise technical understanding - sets imagination free.

Discovering something new, sharing knowledge and group dialogue are essential to creative intelligence. Hairdressers should engage in photographic work, hair competitions, editorial shoots and fashion shows: these are great ways to get away from daily salon work and stimulates out of the box thinking. It gains recognition amongst peer groups whilst living up to the full potential and abilities of being a Stylist. It boosts morale and allows a person to really show what he can do. Whilst making money is crucial to survival in a city like Hong Kong, Hairdressers must not forget that they owe it to their clients to bring new, fresh and fashionable ideas to the salon floor. Hairdressers cannot be stimulated by re-creating the same old and tired hairstyles every day without investing time in personal growth, creative thinking and technical improvement.

Davines Club celebrates its 2nd anniversary

達人髮藝會2周年誌慶 Davines Club celebrated its 2nd anniversary in serving the local hairdressing community. In the past 6 months, the club had invited some top stylists to appear in their workshops and events. Notable were: Herman Law of IL Colpo remembering how he become owner of one of the biggest top-grade salons in HK; Kelvin Tan, Davines Asia’s Technical Manager based in Singapore, taught his audience colouring and bleaching creativity, using the innovative self-adhesive and re-sealable ‘Flamboyage’ plastic foils invented by Angelo Seminara, and Lam Hoi, a master stylist from Guangzhou, who stressed how meticulous one should approach precision hair-cutting. IN-EXCESS色彩潮流講座及研習工作坊 JOICO’s two-day Color Trend Seminar & Workshop INEXCESS invited JOICO International Guest Stylist Ms. Natani Laas and JOICO Assistant Technical Manager Mr. Dicky Ng to demonstrate the use of JOICO Vero K-pak and Color Intensity. During the seminar they taught how to create a ‘Sun Kiss’ effect by lifting up a section of hair and applying pastel colours on the roots so as to create the effect of sunlight refraction. In the course of the workshop sessions, participants practiced the new techniques and created their own IN-EXCESS styles.

Shiseido Professional Season Trend Seminar & Workshop Shiseido Professional 潮流髮藝班 Disconnect Hair Magazine had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Yuka Ishizuka during her visit to Hong Kong where she hosted the Shiseido Professional Season Trend Seminar and Workshop held at the Asia Hair Masters Association studio in Central. She demonstrated the latest AW Season Trend ‘On the Edge’ to a very appreciative Hong Kong audience. Ms. Yuka Ishizuka joined Shiseido Professional in 2005 and is an active member of the Shiseido Beauty Creation Research Center. She also holds a position as one of the ‘Shiseido Season Trend’ creative team. She participates in public relations activities such as television shows and magazines, hair and make-up for the New York & Tokyo Collections and is involved in the development of apprentices as a SABFA instructor. How did you become involved in Hairdressing? When I was a student at school, I went for a haircut at a local salon and was impressed by the stylishness of the hairdresser and her passion towards her work. This made me think about becoming involved in this industry. I joined a Hairdressing school in Tokyo and also spent 6 months finishing off my studies in New Zealand. You are an important team member of Shiseido Professional, what does this entail? I travel a lot throughout Asia conducting seminars and workshops like the one I am hosting here in Hong Kong, and participate frequently in fashion and hair shows. In fact, I was

here last year during the Shiseido Professional Beauty Odyssey Hair Show at Cosmoprof Asia. I also contribute to product development research and am a SABFA (Shiseido Academy of Beauty & Fashion) instructor. What does the seminar title ‘On The Edge’ mean? What I am showing to the audience are special techniques that can be incorporated into hairstyles and make them even more trendy and innovative. We take what might be considered as ordinary and transform the style into today’s fashion; this involves new texture cutting methods with a strong focus on detailing. I also stress the importance of Shiseido Professional’s philosophy of ‘Total Beauty’ so the design of the make-up and fashion are equally important. Did you get a positive feedback from Hong Kong Hairdressers at this seminar? Yes, I was very impressed by the high level of skill here, even compared to some of the other Asian cities I visit: I felt that the Stylists easily grasped my ideas and comprehended the techniques I showed them. They already knew the basic styling methods and appreciated learning the new and modern inspirations I taught. What final message would you like to leave behind? I think it is very important to keep challenging oneself and never stop thinking creatively; only by this way can we expand our minds and come up with new and exciting ideas. Hairdressers play an important part in the global fashion industry and it is our duty to constantly come up with new inspirations. I tell my students in Japan to get out of their comfort zone and put pressure onto themselves by exploring something new and difficult. Only by this way can we progress as Hairdressers. A very good exercise is to engage in competitions and photographic work.

當中包含了全新質感的剪裁方法和對細節的著重。我也重視 Shiseido Professional 推崇的“Total Beauty”美學哲理,彩妝和服飾設計也同等重 要。 在今次髮藝班當中,香港的髮型師有沒有給妳正面的回響? 當然有,香港髮型師的技術水平相當高,甚至比我在其他亞洲城市接觸 過的還要好。他們很容易就理解我的想法和掌握所教授的技巧,他們不 但具備基本的造型手法,也樂於學習我所教授的一些嶄新和前衛的想 法。 最後,妳有何信息要向我們的讀者傳達? 我認爲不斷自我挑戰和追求思想創新是非常重要的,只有這樣我們才可 擴濶思考和構思出創新有趣的想法。在全球的時裝界,髮型師都擔當着 擧足輕重的角色,故此我們有責任不斷發掘新靈感。 我時常勉勵日本的學生要敢於走出他們的安逸區、探尋新事物和新挑 戰,將壓力轉為動力,髮型師才能不斷改進。參加比賽和參與攝影工作 是很好的磨練。
