25 UN Climate Expo 2019

INTRODUCTION Architecture composed of massive timber elements have recently gained a lot of interest and come with the promise of lowering our carbon footprint. What if prefabricated timber systems could be transported from Sweden to other parts of the world in a sustainable way? These are the foundations for my project. Early on in my thesis work I formulated a series of questions that reflect my interests in climate issues, and also allow me to explore how computerized adaptive componential design can help generate future architectural tectonic expression and of course help to mitigate climate-related issues. What if prefabricated timber systems could be transported from Sweden to other parts of the world in a sustainable way? These are the foundations for my project. To commence my study, I needed a ‘client’ with great exposure to global climate policy making, seeking a large exhibition and conference space to showcase new emerging technologies and connect policymakers from around the globe. With these considerations, I was able to select a site on the main UN campus grounds in Bonn, Germany where various climate summits are held including the past COP 23 summit and Tanaloa Dialogue. Located the beautiful banks of the river Rhine, the site is currently occupied by a parking lot, which sits directly adjacent to the temporary event site used by past climatic summits. The COP 23 event was held late last year in a dreary temporary plastic tent venue, devoid of any architectural expression. I believe that architecture has a vital role to play by setting the stage for global climate strategy talks.

236

With this in mind, I sought to provide a permanent addition to the UN climatic dialogue, by creating a space that could host future events like the COP 25 and Tanaloa Dialogue summits on the main campus grounds.

massive concrete slabs, where heat is stored and later released throughout the night when the family sleeps. A basalt brick wall facing south passively gathers and retains energy from the sun which is then released back into the building during cold winter nights. In summer, the design of the building envelope shelters the same wall and much of the floor from direct sunlight, preventing the building from overheating. Large glazed windows at the eastern and western ends open up sightlines up and down the coast while also providing ventilation. At the northern facade, immersive window pods punctuate the facade and provide a dramatic perspective of the mountains above.

Design The Solar Arc House is home to a family of four. The dwelling is located in the threshold between the the mountains and the sea. It aims to inspire a regional specific model of architecture, centered on progressive and sustainable living concepts. With the aim of pushing sustainable living performance, the building adopts passive heating strategies and the latest advancements in sustainable materials without diverging from the poetic narrative of the site and its context. A centripetal composition with a basalt block fireplace form the center of the plan, radiating heat outwards and upwards long after the fire has been extinguished. Pipes with water heated from around the fireplace and chimney is pumped around thermally

Skylights provide indirect lighting to drafting office and bedroom as well as providing ventilation to prevent overheating in summer

Seaweed bale insulated building envelope with charred cedar cladding

Enflo wind generators providing 24h power

Water heated by the central fireplace is pumped through ground and first floor concrete slabs and used for hot showers. The thermal mass of the slabs retain the heat throughout the night

The slanted roof structure responds to the path of the solar arc and prevailing winds for efficient passive performance throughout the year

Water storage collected from pitched roof after passing through a first flush valve

A thermally massive basalt brick wall retains the energy collected from the sun throughout the day and disperse it back into the dwelling at night

Outdoor area sheltered from the prevailing winds

Central massive basalt brick fireplace core extending upwards throughout the building. A glass screen moves up and down to regulate radiant heat exposure Thick wool curtains extend out at night controlling privacy and prevent heat loss through glazed facade
