BRIEF A COMPETITION RUN BY THE SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK SPORTS ASSOCIATION (SOPA) TO PROVIDE A SPORTS HIGHSCHOOL IN THE SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK PRECINCT.THE SCHOOL MUST CATER FOR 800 STUDENTS WITH A STRONG FOCUS ON CONTEXT AND WHAT THE ARCHITECTURE BRINGS TO THE NSW SYSTEM OF LEARNING + EDUCATION, THE SCHOOL IS TO BE USED AFTER HOURS BY THE PUBLIC WHO UTILISE SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK CURRENTLY.

SITE LOCATED ON THE CURRENT AQUATIC CENTER CARPARK ACCESSED FROM OLYPIC BLVD. THE CAR PARK IS TO BE MOVED BUT NOT NEGLECTED, AND THE SCHOOL MUST REPLACE THE EXISTING 500 PARKING SPACES. THE SITE INTERFERES WITH THE TRAIN LINE AND HAS A NUMBER OF VARYING CONTOUR MOVEMENTS. PROJECT: ‘THE LINK’ EMBODIES THE TRADITIONAL METHOD OF TEACHING IN AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS. AXIAL ORGANISATION HAS BEEN GROUND FLOOR PLAN @ 1:1000 EMPLOYED TO SEPARATE DIFFERENT FACULTIES, RESULTING IN THREE MAIN STRATEGIC BLOCKS: CORE, ELECTIVE + SHARED. THE COMBINATION OF SUCH, SPATIALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY PERTAINS TO THE TRADITIONAL EDUCATIONAL MODEL.

PROJECT THE AXES, (WHICH HAVE BEEN DETERMINED BY THE THREE MAIN ENTRANCE POINTS ONTO THE SITE) MEET AT THE LIBRARY, WHICH BEHAVES AS THE CENTRAL HUB - THE MEETING POINT WITHIN THE SCHOOL. “THE LINK” HAS BEEN DEVISED AS A SOCIAL CIRCULATION STRATEGY IN ORDER TO CONNECT THE THREE BLOCKS. THE ARCHITECTURE IS FLUID IN CONTRAST TO THE SHARP GEOMETRY OF THE BODY OF THE SCHOOL. IT ALLOWS STUDENTS TO EASILY CIRCULATE FIRST FLOOR PLAN QUICKLY ACROSS THE PARAMETERS OF THE SITE, WHILST ALSO PROVIDING BREAKOUT GREEN SPACES FOR STUDY AND SOCIALISATION.

BRIEF AN INDEPTH STUDY OF DENSITY IN ORDER TO CREATE 100 STUDENT APARTMENTS WITHIN THE UTS TOWER BUILDING. NO INTERRUPTIONS TO THE CORE STRUCTURE, BUT ALLOWING MOVEMENT OF FLOOR PLATES AND EXTERNAL AESTHETIC. THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT MUST EMBODY DENSITY THROUGH INDIVIDUALITY AND COLLECTIVITY BOTH PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY FOR STUDENTS. USING A CUBIC MEASURING SYSTEM WE CAN MEASURE DENSITY BY THE FOLLOWING: - FLOOR AREA RATIO - HEIGHT - SITE COVERAGE - POPULATION

SITE THIS PROJECT PROPOSES THAT FOUR FLOOR PLATES WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE CURRENT TOWER BUILDING. OFFICE USERS IN THE TOWER BUILDING ARE BEING RELOCATED TO NEWER UTS BUILDINGS. THE ACCOMMODATION IS ELEVATED FOR ACOUSTIC CONTROL, VIEW ADVANTAGE AND PRIVACY. THE SITE IS A UNIVERSITY LANDMARK: THUS REMOVING FOUR FLOORS IS BOLD, HOWEVER SUCCESSFUL IN CREATING AN OPEN, OUTDOOR SCENARIO FOR STUDENTS WANTING TO LIVE IN A MORE PRIVATE, PERSONALISED ENVIRONMENT IN AN OTHERWISE VERY DENSE AREA OF THE CITY. THE ATMOSPHERE BECOMES THAT OF A TREE-HOUSE OR AS THE PROJECT IS CALLED - SKY KASBAH.

PROJECT EVERY STUDENT RECEIVES A HIERARCHY OF PROGRAMRESULTING IN THE BEDROOMS AS AN ALWAYS ELEVATED SPACE. THUS, EACH STUDENT HAS EQUALITY IN THE FORM OF FLOOR AREA, VIEWS (NOT ONE STUDENT LOOKS DIRECTLY INTO ANOTHER STUDENT’S SPACE), SOCIAL INTERACTION AND ABILITY TO DEVELOP IN UNIVERSITY LIFE. THE DESIGN ENSURES IMMENSE PRIVACY WHEN SLEEPING/STUDYING/RELAXING, HOWEVER ENCOURAGES COLLECTIVITY WHEN COOKING. THE DESIGN IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SECTIONS - EACH HOUSING 5O STUDENTS. THE PROJECT REQUIRES LIGHTWEIGHT CLT CONSTRUCTION AND ZINC CLADDING. LARGE WINDOWS OPERATE WITH LOUVRES.

BRIEF EXPERIMENTAL MAPING AND DIAGRAMING OF NATURAL SYSTEMS AND EXISTING MUSEUM DESIGN WAS TO BE TRANSFERRED INTO THE URBAN CONTEXT OF WALSH BAY. THE RESULT WOULD REQUIRE THE HOUSING OF ARTEFACTS FROM TWO SEPARATE AND CONFLICTING MUSEUM COLLECTIONS. EMPHASIS IS HELD ON THE MOVEMENT THROUGH SPACE, AND HOW THE ORGANISATION OF SUCH CAN ALTER ONE’S EXPERIENCE, REACTION AND OPINION.

SITE WITH A POP-UP FOCUS ON ACTIVATING SMALL AREAS OF SYDNEY, ALL MUSUEMS ARE PLACED IN A GRID ACROSS THE CBD. THIS MUSUEM LOCATES ITSELF IN THE MIDDLE OF PIER 4 AT WALSH BAY. ITS RADIUS PUNCTURES THE SIDE OF THE WHARF WHILST PROJECTING OUT OVER THE HARBOUR. THE MUSEUM FINDS ITSELF IN THE WAY OF PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION AT THE SITE, THUS ENCOURAGING ATTENTION AND USAGE. THE MUSEUM IS RESTRICTED BY A 10X10X10 METER PERIMETER, LIMITING THE SPACE PROVIDED FOR ARTEFACTS.

PROJECT THIS PROJECT CHALLENGES THE TRADITIONAL NOTION OF MUSUEM DESIGN AND AIMS TO CONFRONT ITS AUDIENCE BY JUXTAPOSING TWO VERY DIFFERENT COLLECTIONS; 1. MENAGERIE AT AUS MUSEUM 2. PRESERVED HUMAN ABNORMALTIES AT KUNSTKAMERA IN RUSSIA THE MAPPING OF SPIDER WEB SPANS IN A ROCK WALL INSPIRED A ‘PUSH-PULL’ GRID DIAGRAM THAT WAS TRANSLATED INTO THE VIEWING SYSTEM IN THE MUSEUM. THE MUSUEM WAS THUS DESIGNED IN RELATION TO THE INTENSITY OF OBJECTS AND THEIR REQUIRED VIEWING SPAN. THE FINAL FORM EMBODIES THIS GRID SYSTEM ALLOWING OBJECTS TO BE NEAR OR FAR, UP OR DOWN.

perspective plan The secondary museum, in this case the Kunstkamera museum of human abnormalties preserved in jars from the 15th century, was able to be diagrammed in the same way using the span and depth surface grids of the spider webs and primary museum. Consequently, the design of this museum relied on housing both skeletons, menagerie and the numerous jars held in Kunstkamera. The juxtaposition between the intensity of viewing objects from the two museums allowed for the museum to be designed through the understanding of viewing spans in relation to an object, as seen

how that can shape an experience inside a museum. Thus, new grid surface diagrams evolved with the notion of ‘pushical surfaces, changing in materiality dependant of site conditions, visability and the intensity of the objects within.

BRIEF THE CITY OF SYDNEY DOES NOT CATER FOR THOSE WHO ARE “OUT OF TIME”... WHOSE DAILY ROUTINE DOES NOT OPERATE WITHIN NORMAL OFFICE HOURS. THUS THIS PROJECT AIMS TO USE STRUCTURE AS A FLEXIBLE SHELTER FOR RITUALS THAT CAN AND WILL CHANGE WITH TIME. THE DESIGN OF BATHS, LIBRARY AND GARDEN ON THE SITE AS A GENERIC STRUCTURE ALLOWS MULTI-PURPOSE USE FOR ALL. LIBRARY: 40SQM WITH 6 STUDY AREAS BATHS: 500 CUBIC M OF WATER GARDEN: KITCHEN/PREP/GROWTH

SITE THE CORNER OF EDDY AVENUE AND ELIZIABETH STREET IS CURRENTLY A 222 METER WALKWAY WITH A LARGE TREE CANOPY AND A HIGH AMOUNT OF PEDESTRIAN ACTIVITY. WITH A RANGE OF 2 TO 15 METERS IN WIDITH, THE DESIGN FACES MANY CONSTRAINTS. THE PROPOSAL AIMS TO SPAN THE WHOLE DISTANCE OF THE SITE ALLOWING ITS NARROW APPEARANCE. THE BUILDING IS FRAGMENTED AND THE PEDESTRIAN PATH IS ELEVATED TO THE ROOF STRUCTURE. THE CURVED STEEL RIBBING STRUCTURE ALLOWS SHELETER FOR PROGRAM. THE SITE EXPERIENCES LOUD TRAFFIC NOISE AND STRONG WIND TUNNELS.

PROJECT THE USE OF CONCRETE, STEEL AND GLASS FOR THIS PROJECT ALLOWS FOR AESTHETICAL ACCURACY AS WELL AS GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SUCH AS NATURAL DAY-LIGHTING AND EFFECTIVE VENTILATION. THE BUILDING BLENDS NATURALLY INTO THE EXISITING SITE DUE TO THE FLOWING NATURE OF THE CONCRETE ‘SAILS’ AND DELICATE RIBBING STRUCTURE. USERS EXPERIENCE A LINEAR CIRCULATION WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO STOP AND USE ANY RIBBED STRUCTURE - FOR SHELTER, READING, BATHING, EXERCISING, SOCIALISING OR PLANTING. THE PROJECT ACTIVATES A SMALL PATCH OF SYDNEY THAT IS CURRENTLY IGNORED.
