A Letter From The CEO

DEAR FRIENDS, This past year has been one of our most memorable. We began the year with the exciting news that we were approved to expand Philip’s Academy into Paterson, allowing us to live into our mission in an even greater way as we are poised to serve more urban children. We are so honored to have the opportunity to expand our impact to another city. We were greeted with more big news this spring when First Lady Michelle Obama chose to visit Philip’s Academy with Today show host Al Roker. I got the call on April 1st, thinking at first, it was an April fool’s joke. Even two weeks later, I still wondered if I was the subject of an elaborate hoax. But as with many things at Philip’s, our wildest dreams came true. Mrs. Obama spent time planting seedlings in our Rooftop Garden, learning about our indoor urban farming lab and sampling some healthy snacks with our students. The First Lady exuded the grace, class and genuine affection for children that she models wherever she goes. This was exciting news especially as EcoSpaces Education begins to expand, reaching more educators, parents and food service providers across the country. The EcoSpacesEd.org website, launched earlier this year, and is an educational resource focused

on health and wellness directed to educators, school foodservice professionals and communities. The website provides information, ideas and curricular based tools for educators and foodservice professionals to implement and replicate the program in their own schools. We welcomed 60 kindergartners to Philip’s Academy Charter School of Paterson earlier this September. The DOE conducted its “Preparedness Visit”, and by all measures it was successful. The school is seeded with faculty from the Newark school to ensure a consistent program and culture. The Principal, Regina Lauricella, and two other faculty members have been part of the Philip’s community for over five years. I can assure you that “love is the basis of state” is alive and well in a new city. Since we opened our doors, I have been stunned by the student’s levels of self-control, pride in their work, smiles on their faces and tremendous affection and appreciation. It is just so powerful to see lives transformed before our eyes. Their newfound confidence, optimism and sense of trust are astounding. This is the most important part of the work we do. With the opening of Philip’s Academy of Paterson as well as the growth of our EcoSpaces Education program, we are 3

poised to serve more students and families than we could have ever imagined 28 years ago. What started with 10 students in 1988 and grew to 372 in 2013, will now reach well over 600 students plus their families and communities in 2016 and many more in the years to come. None of this would be possible without your continued and ongoing support. Thank you for your support; you are critical part of our great success. We invite you to join us for a visit to see the Philip’s Academy students in action on the Rooftop Garden or working in the Teaching Kitchen. Please call the advancement office to set up a visit at 973-624-1164. Warm Regards,

Miguel J. Brito, CEO

The George J. Mullen, Jr. Educational Fund was established in 2011 in the memory of our dear friend and former Trustee, George Mullen, who served our community for over 15 years. George was that “gentleman” we imagine when we say the words: honorable, cultured, courageous, ethical and wise. Donations from the Fund will be allocated toward student-focused educational purposes for our children that are in keeping with the values and memory of George.

Dean Dillard Robinson Society The Dean Dillard Robinson Society is named in memory of the founder of St. Philip’s and honors those individuals who have chosen to remember Philip’s Eucation Partners in their estate plans. Gifts made by will are an excellent way to contribute to the school. Bequests and other testamentary gifts are the common planned gifts for PEP. All such legacies, regardless of size, are gratefully received. Anonymous (2) Miguel J. Brito Steven and Betsy Buell Otelia Daring William M. Duncan, II Elizabeth B.
