Capturing true light quality

Translating the live experience to screen

2

Adaptable light for any audience The Philips Selecon PL1 MKII series has been refreshed, offering fantastic benefits, giving you the freedom to create great experiences that are as stunning on stage as they are on screen. In today’s world where there is an increasing appetite for live transmissions, smartphone cameras and viral videos, the visual experience of a show, gig or event is not exclusive to the ticket-holder. Designers therefore need lighting tools that precisely translate their carefully crafted looks from eye to camera. With our latest generation of PL1 MKII products, they can rest assured the magic won’t be lost. Improved color consistency across the range with increased color rendering, no color fringing, higher output, reduced operating sound along with RDM, simplified 5-channel control and a 3 year warranty combine to breathe new life into a much-loved workhorse.

3

Understanding your challenges delivering solutions Lighting design is an art form. The stage is the canvas and lighting is the tool with which each mood and scene is cast.

4

Theater Lighting influences and excentuates moods, feelings and emotions through color, direction, intensity, form and movement. It is an art form – creating both natural and unnaturalistic scenes and environments – guiding the audience seamlessly through a story.

Television Light in television sculpts, it adds depth and perspective to the scene. It is as critical in directing the audiences’ attention or influencing their emotions, just as any camera movement, acting or editing does.

Live events Before the show, an audience experiences that thrilling moment just as the lights go down. From begining to end, their heightened visual senses immerse and include them, making it a truly unforgetable experience.

Architainment Creating direction and interest, making people look and interpret objects in a different light, is an essential consideration. Visually enhancing static pieces of art and buildings. Transforming environments by manipulating surfaces, bringing them to life with color and movement.

A family affair

PL1 MKII and Brighter, quieter and improved light quality

PLprofile1 MKII

PLfresnel1 MKII

A variable beam luminaire combines precise high-output beam control and pattern projection using only 120W.

A general-purpose lighting fixture for theater, small studio and display lighting applications. It produces an adjustable cone of light with a soft edge which blends easily with adjacent beams to provide even illumination.

An innovative combination of LED source technology and precision optical design, the PLprofile1 MKII is available in 18-34° or 24-44° beam angles while offering the performance of a 500W profile fixture.

6 4

Available with a 15-54° variable beam angle, the PLfresnel1 MKII delivers the performance of a 500W fresnel fixture with a power consumption of only 140W.

PL4 MKII

PLcyc1 MKII

PLprofile4 MKII

Delivers smooth, even cyc lighting in a compact lightweight design using only 140W to illuminate drops up to five meters high with 1.2 meter spacing centers.

A high output interchangeable modular profile luminaire base supporting a wide range of rotable lens tubes.

Each PLcyc1 MKII can replace the equivalent of a traditional 4-color, 500W cyc luminaire.

The innovative combination of LED source technology and precision optical design, allows for lens tubes with a range of both zoom and fixed angle options. The rotatable barrel gives 360° adjustment allowing shutter cuts and gobos to be orientated where desired. A newly introduced power feature, enables the unit to save even more power when not in use further reducing its carbon footprint. 7

Advanced control All PL MKII series luminaires have an LCD menu system for luminaire setup, control and addressing. A revised menu system offers all the configuration options within a few button presses, speeding up setup.

Less power consumption and no dimmer circuits make these luminaires the obvious choice for pattern projection and stage washes

LED engine With the new powerful LED engine, power consumption has been reduced by approximately 7%, while color consistency has been greatly improved, ensuring unit-to-unit matching of colors. The PL MKII luminaire’s LED engine offers exceptional performance and life. Under normal operating conditions our LED engine has a life expectancy in excess of 50,000 hours.

and deep saturated colors

RDM & DMX512 control PL MKII luminaires have added support for Remote Device Management (RDM) and DMX512 control. A choice of 8 or 16-bit control resolution, or a simple new 5-channel control mode. Extended color and color temperature control is possible simplifying programming and luminaire color matching from a console.

The PLprofile1 MKII, PLfresnel1 MKII and PLprofile4 MKII provides smart cable management by using a PL Interconnect Box with DMX and PowerCON in and thru connections

Innovation The Philips on-going commitment to R&D investment has resulted in a new development of LED array for the PL MKII series, giving customers improved color consistency and no striations or multiple shadows. This has been delivered without comprimising on physical size with the LED array being configured within the same contained area as previously. Always mindful of a commitment to sustainability the PLprofile4 MKII adds a new power saving mode – enabling the power consumption to be reduced by up to 97%.

Conveying emotion through color

on Land of Our Fathers

10

Land of Our Fathers Lighting designer: Hartley T A Kemp Photography: Polly Thomas

We wanted to create a gritty, oppressive world, based in naturalism, which intensifies as the piece develops. PL1 MKII LED units were used to provide a color underlay to the lighting states, to suggest light glistening off wet rocks and to help convey emotion especially during some of the more hyper-real sequences.

Described by The Stage as a ‘breathtaking masterpiece’ Chris Urch’s critically acclaimed, award-winning play Land of Our Fathers focuses on a group of Welsh miners trapped underground as Margaret Thatcher is elected. To heighten the emotion of the piece, international lighting designer Hartley T A Kemp employed the Philips Selecon PL1 MKII series luminaires for crucial colorizing throughout. Kemp wanted to create a gritty, oppressive world, based in naturalism, which intensifies as the piece develops. The PL1 MKII LED units were used to provide a color underlay to the lighting states, to suggest light glistening off wet rocks and to help convey emotion especially during some of the more hyper-real sequences. Kemp said “The color rendering of the MKII luminaires is even better than before and the lack of fringing on the beam is impressive. The brightness is also good even with saturated color.” To intensify the feeling of claustrophobia, the set was closed in with side walls and a roof structure. The PLfresnel1 MKII units provided back/side light through the USL doorway, the only opening off the set. The PLprofile1 MKII units were applied as low front system cover with two further profiles as low front of house booms at just above head height. “The reduced noise output of the MKII luminaires is good given the close proximity of the front of house units to members of the audience,” adds Kemp’s associate lighting designer Chris May. “The LED units also bring great benefits in terms of reduced power consumption.” The production was ultimately also recorded. By using the PLs, Kemp and his team were able to work with TV lighting director Bernie Davis, adjusting the lighting to suit the camera, during a live recording session without compromising the piece. This flexibility of adjustment has been a successful transition for supplying a complete solution when considering productions for multiple mediums.
