About Kristina Phillips Architecture is something that I am truly passionate about and has been since an early age. I am very fortunate to be the first person in my family that has been able to pursue their passion of being a designer. With full support from my family and friends, it makes me even more determined and excited to blaze my own trail and achieve my goal of becoming an Architect. Thus far, I have taken full advantage of every opportunity that has come myway to develop both my design skills through various mediums, methods, studies and effective communication. In addition, I have been fortunate to experience various cultures first hand and how Art and Architecture is viewed and used in different environments. From studying abroad in London, England (Summer 2011 Design Studio), participating in the nationally recognized Over-theRhine Residency and Atelier programs, traveling to my Father’s home country of Trinidad and Tobago, along with many other influential places in and out of the United states. These opportunities have both challenged and advanced my character and have greatly influenced the way that I approach design. I am ready to use my talents, ambition, experience, and future opportunities, to not only create beautiful buildings, but structures that better the lives of those who use the spaces. In addition, I believe that architecture should inspire and bring out the best in people and their environments through aesthetics, function and sustainable means. As a recent graduate of Miami University’s Creative Arts College with a bachelor of Architecture and a Minor in Global Perspectives on Sustainability, I am looking forward to becoming a vital addition to your design team.

Peaslee Neighborhood Center Miami University Center For Community Engagement Atelier Program sponsored at CR Architects Cincinnati, Ohio.

Current project to propose renovations to Peaslee Neighborhood Center’s exterior envelop and small programatic changes influenced by the Living Building Challenge. The goal of the project was to design a new building envelope and enhance the buildding systems of Peaslee Neighborhood Center. Currently, Peaslee has an aluminum storefront on both the North and South facades, while the East and West are predominantly brick. The glazing was replaced 20-25 years ago, but is failing and needs replaced again. We have analyzed other interior and exterior building conditions pertaining to issues with the building envelope, program, ventilation, thermal issues, and daylighting. The challenge was to capitalize on Peaslee’s inherent potential by enhancing its existing conditions for maximum efficiency using the Living Building Challenge as a guid line. We intend to provide Peaslee Neighborhood Center with an assortment of drawings at the schematic and design develop level, enabling them to pursue a capital campaign as an informed and credible client. Programs used: Rhino, Revit, Autocad, Photoshop and Illustrator Project Location: Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio Time: Curent

Over-the-Rhine Design-Build 1400 Republic Street storefront structural repair and renovation for a mixed use building in one of the United States’ largest and most intact urban historic districts. During the course of one semester, Miami University offers a unique residency program located in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. Students from various majors live and work in the neighborhood alongside professors, leaders, and community members to gain real experience in their respective fields while performing community service. To enhance their first hand experiences through academic means students take a full course load in addition to their focus (American Cities Since the 1940’s, Service learning, Writing/Designing for Social Change, and Journaling). In the case of the Design-Build program six students (five Architecture and one Interior Design) worked on creating a white-box space with professor John Blake (Registered Architect) on one of Over-the-Rhine Community Housing’s mixed use properties. Students communicated first hand with clients, professional masons, structural and mechanical engineers in order to complete schematic designs, construction documents, as well as implementing the renovation and repairs first hand. Project constraints included historic district guidelines, zoning code, building code, and budget. Programs and mediums used: Revit, Sketchup, Autocad, Photoshop, Graphite and Colored Pencil. Art Original art and designs. This is a collection of art through the mediums of charcoal, pen and ink, pastel, graphite, watercolor from food items, and paper studies. Charcoal tends to be Kristina’s main choice of medium when it comes to drawing, but through her college career, she has experimented with many other mediums through drawing and 2d studios, Architecture studios, and her own exploration.

Handcrafted Frobel box gift set #4 Blocks B/W FOUR

Phillik8@MiamiOH.edu

Froebel Studies Designing and constructing box gift set number four in order to play with design through using wood, blocks, paper and photography to create interesting and dynamic compositions. As an Introduction to the Westcott Studio the first project given was to hand craft and design a maple wood Froebel Box Gift Set. The gift set featured here is gift set number four which contains eight rectangular blocks. The details of the box are rhythmic joints along four sides with an operable top that opens by sliding a piece of red wood out of its locked position to reveal the eight blocks inside. In addition to creating gift box set number four, the blocks were used for further design exercises and exploration in conjunction with woven studies and original photography by Kristina. Westcott House Creating a master plan, visitor center, tea house and temporary pavilion for the Burton J. and Orpha Westcott house through the exploration of light and shadow, weaving, experience, and program.

This project is the result of working closely with professor John Reynolds of Miami University and primary client Marta Wojick (excutive director of the Westcott House) to develop a solid and complementary alternative site adjacent to one of Frank Lloyd Write’s historic homes. The first half of this project was focused on the development of the site adjacent to the Westcott as a result of various personal studies done of the Westcott property. The second portion of the project focused on creating a visitor center, tea house, and temporary pavilion that would be present in the absence of a solar decathlon structure. Designs were presented to Millenium Park Landscape Architect, Carol Yetkin, the Westcott House board of directors, community members, students, and local Architects. Square Circle Summer study abroad project that focused on Sustainable office design inspired by the graphic design agency Square Circle. The Square Circle office project was designed during a London summer Architecture study abroad opportunity given at Miami University with professor J.E. Elliott. The design challenge of this project was to create an office space for the graphic design company, Square Circle that included a strong component of sustainability. With incorporating sustainable design methods it was also crucial that the project stood out from the surrounding office buildings as a way to create a inspiring and creative space. This was to be a response towards promoting a fun and exciting space that employees can work and create to their furthest potential. In addition, the design takes full advantage of the views of the West India Docks and the River Thames located in the Canary Wharf District. Photography Used as both a form of documentation and art Kristina’s photography is a snapshot into what she is thinking when observing and designing the world around her. Composition, subject, foreground, background, light, shadow, texture, color, value, hue, moment, mood and many other terms are often used to describe the world around us in a critical and curious light. When it comes photography and Architecture, Kristina is constantly finding moments of inspiration that is captured in her everyday life and travels. She finds that the use of the camera is a way in which she can learn from in order to further her craft and interest in the physical world.
