LIGHT
TOWER
Light Tower - design for a meticulous Egyptologist. Design involved working in conjuction with other students to establish site and use of free floating light. The light was an expression of movement through shadows and space.

Design objective was to create a sculpture like structure that was reminiscent to ancient Egyptian pyramids. A primary feature is the projected hieroglyphic images surrounding the base of the structure.

MUSIC
6
MODEL
The project involved comprehension of structural elements that exist within music and the built environment. Using the music by Nine Inch Nails "Under the Bridge", I was able to construct various elements that represented tempo, tones and distinct instruments.

SUNDIAL
RE-DESIGN
A redesign of a horizontal sundial. A collaborated project with two fellow colleagues: Matthew V. Sanders and Aleksandra K. Asbel. To establish accuracy, AutoCad and simple trigonometry was used to configure the distance the month markers needed in relation to the height each month was raised.

PUBLIC
PLACE
paper study With the idea of Public, Private, and Religious Place, and using techniques gathered from paper studies. This design required close attention to how people circulated through a particular space. Creating narrow passages using walls that grow from the earth helped me to acheive that flow to make this project successful. Using lights and shadows, created from sunlight striking through etched glass I was able to envelope a sense of sublimity and reverence. The curved roof is an abstract form of the solar path, a symbol which represents eternity.

CAMBRIDGE
URBAN
HOUSING
The site located in Cambridge, Massachussetts is 20m x 100m, a very narrow area that posed various problems. In order to allow natural light to permeate through every living space an interlocking design concept was devised. This allowed every apartment a view to the southern and northern landscape, a secondary benefit to the design feature. Other benefits included a highly maximized corridor circulation which were located on every other floor level.

The Four Square House design problem is a hypothetical Garden City grid of 36m by 36m, the assignment is to design four houses in any configuration, not exceeding 162m2 and each possess a garage and garden, technique and nature combined in the given 9m2. Consideration such as orientation, privacy, construction, spatial structure is taken into account.

Scaffold structure frame
Designed by a collaborative effort, this Galapagos Research Facility exemplifies the true concerns of maintaining a sensative eco-environment from the harmful affects of poor land use and an unnecessary carbon footprint. Much consideration was taken to avoid penetrating the harden volcanic soil found on the main island. The solution in acheiving this was by using ordinary scaffolding as the foundation to the building structure.

COMMUNITY
Designed in collaboration with Salud A. Sierra, this 90 bed acute community hospital is concieved from the necessity in the aftermath of Hurrican Katrina. Special attention has been taken to maintain the hospital in working condition in the event of another catastrosphe such as that of 2005. The healthcare facility is designed to serve as a beacon of hope and a place for refuge for the community at large.

As a class we were given the choice of selecting one of several locations within a pre-selected area in the North Gate section of College Station, Texas. The area currently serves as a retreat from the grinding stress of college life. For years, sections within this area have been under developed or not developed at all. Recognizing this area as a place for increasing city revenue, the City of College Station has collaborated with the architectural students at Texas A&M to create and develop a Master Plan for the North Gate section of the city. Part of the scope was to redesign the existing scheme, including street and traffic layout, and plan for a new mixed use neighborhood with park spaces and all of the building setbacks. The students' designs ranged from movie theatres, hotels, to restaurants and workout facilities. AutoCad/Illustrator

MAGGIE
C E N T R E S -COLLEGE
STATION,
TEXAS
Maggie's is about empowering people to live with, through and beyond cancer by bringing together professional help, communities of support and building design to create exceptional centres for cancer care. These centres are being built throughout Europe, however this project has taken this centre of support across the ocrean here to the United States. The scope of this project is to create a facility that embodies a sense of community within a built environment. The centre must facilitate easy access within the centre and throughout its immediate exterior surrounding. In order to acheive positive outcomes of patient and non-patient care many Evidence-based design practices were implimented.

MOBILITY-PROMOTING This extensive project consisted of creating a masterplan for 100 acres in College Station. The project involved designing three proto-type residential units, all of which were designed by incorporating "Universal Design" methodology and "Evidence-Based Design" practices. The primary focus of this project was to create an environment that encourages the residential dwellers to participate in outdoor activities, such as walking and cycling, to increase the quality of life and longevity. Some other distinct features include shaded seating all throughout meandering pathways that lead to gathering nodes. These nodes are placed throughout the community in strategic locations, some of which are located near water features, gardens, and sport courts. The nodes serve as gathering spaces that can enhance fellowship among the residences, which according to research studies can help buffer stress and enhance quality of life. Revit/Photoshop

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so other people won't feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we un-consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we feel liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." --Nelson Mandela, 1994 Inaugural Speech, written by Marianne Williamson
