The Uncanny Valley

A selection of artworks inspired by the landscape of South Wales

Artist Statement My current work is mainly concerned with the landscape. I use abstraction, to varying degrees, as a method and the landscape experience as a source. My references range from the geological and natural history of a place right through to industrialisation and how human activity has left its mark on the landscape. The sublime and existential concerns are also subjects I try to explore, as these are fundamental considerations when one is confronted by the sheer expansiveness and intensity of the landscape. The creative process itself is also as much a part of the development of a work, no matter how much I plan I never truly know what the end results will be. The tension between abstraction and pictorial representation is an incredibly exciting place to be and it is this that drives my creativity. Paul Klee - “Art does not reproduce the visible; it makes visible.

Welsh born artist Phillip Jacobs gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton, specialising in painting and printmaking. He then went on to study for a HND in Multi-disciplinary Computer Applications in Carmarthen College of Art and Technology. It was during this time he first realised the full potential of Apple Mac computers within the creative arts. He later studied for an MSc in Interactive Media in Swansea Institute (now University of Wales Trinity Saint David), where he developed and designed interactive/time-based artworks. After a number of years working within the digital field he returned to painting in 2003 and has continued to paint and exhibit art ever since. He likes to divide his creative output between traditional analogue and experimental digital techniques. He is currently a part-time lecturer in art and design at Gower College Swansea.
