AN EXHIBITION AT PENARTH PIER PAVILION Soft Mutations: Images of Land and Sea is an exhibition of artworks by Phillip Jacobs. The Pier Pavilion is situated in the seaside town of Penarth, just five miles south-west of the capital city of Cardiff. It is a recently restored Art Deco Pier Pavilion and serves the community of Penarth as a new, multi-functional building which houses an impressive art gallery, cinema, cafe and restaurant. The old dancehall has been sympathetically converted into a large exhibition space. Soft Mutations: Images of Land and Sea runs until June 12th, 2014.

ARTIST STATEMENT “Art does not reproduce the visible; it makes visible.” Paul Klee.
I love the above quote by the great German/Swiss artist Klee, he seems to sum up my approach to art in a few, brief words. My work is not about the realistic reproduction of a scene, it is concerned with interpretation and expression rather than imitation and mimesis. It is about making the visible and the endless possibilities that this allows me as an artist. I like to think of my work as existing somewhere between actuality and imagining. I’m also fascinated with the process of painting itself, the building up of layers, the stripping back, the combi nation of colours, shapes, texture, forms, etc, it all goes towards fuelling my imagination. Sometimes, a canvas can seem to have a life of its own and I am happy to let it take me in the direction it wants to go. Phillip Jacobs, 2014.
