The drawings of Michaël Borremans represent an unsettling juxtaposition of enigmatic characters with bizarre, often desolate landscapes that nevertheless convey a sense of something ordinary, like a window into the quotidian routine of another reality. Borremans uses a range of media for his drawings, the everyday materials from our own reality, such as old photographs, torn-off book covers and envelopes, together with a subdued palette of brown, black and green that evoke a certain banality in the depicted scene. This creates a void and a sense of confusion for the viewer as he is left to confront and accept the image that provides no explanation, but leaves a sense of surreal familiarity.

“Borremans’ oeuvre displays a very peculiar specificity in his use of draftsmanship, where one observes a kind of roman à clef of the artistic process. The map of his world is located in drawing, be it in the use of the same imagery as in his paintings (although in a more explicit form), in the pervasive graphemes that introduce the word, or the long, narrative captions. It is therefore in drawing that the subtly transformed body of characters is transgressed by incision, inscription, and sign. And it is also in Borremans’ drawings that one finds the creation – in a more radical way – of spaces that manipulate the representational scale, transforming it into a paradoxical scale that in turn itself becomes a theme. “This theme (the recurrence of the inadequacy of the body with respect to space and the unsuitableness of the precise gesture) becomes central, because the rigor exercised in its graphic rendering is intensified by the importance of the particular, the detail, the fragment.” (D. Sardo, ‘The Enchanted Wanderer’, in E. van Duyn, ed., Michaël Borremans. Weight, Ostfildern, 2008)

“i think it’s very important to remember that we exist in the fourth dimension of time. in a way i was thinking of this with the bread sculpture of Marie Antoinette (1989) and Louis XVI (1989). They are kind of blurred, turning into mud or digesting themselves. we can hardly know ourselves, so how can we know what someone was like who lived two hundred years ago? They are about the impossibility of representation. Then with a frozen flower, when you freeze it, you kill it biologically and it becomes a pure eternal image. so in a way you are defeating the problem of history, but at the expense of life in the present.” (Marc Quinn in conversation with Germano Celant, exhibition catalogue, Fondazione Prada, Marc Quinn, Milan, 2000)

Bruce Nauman’s acclaimed oeuvre comprises a vast range of media, including video, installation, neon lighting, drawing, sculpture, sound pieces and performances. His practice demonstrates an interest in the nature of communication, language and its intrinsic problems, issues that are often expressed in a playful and wicked way. As one of the most influential living artists, Bruce Nauman’s work is considered by most critics to be provocative, inventive and challenging, although some, such as Blake Gponik, refer to him as a contemporary classic. The American artist was recently awarded the prestigious Golden Lion as the US representative in the Venice Biennale 2009. The present lot, a graphite drawing depicting two pairs of disembodied and elegant hands resembles a later work entitled Fifteen Pairs of Hands (1996), presented at the Venice Biennale in 2009. The simple, graceful lines are characteristic in Nauman’s drawing, which make him come across as a “Post-minimalist artist, whose drawings are made with a minimum of fuss in order to record an idea or to see what something will look like” (R. Smith, ‘Art: Bruce Nauman Retrospective’, New York Times, 30 October 1987). Indeed, the one of the traits in Bruce Nauman’s oeuvre is the power ideas over formal resolution.

“The apparent rawness of Nauman’s work is … not the antithesis of craft but a declaration of faith in simplicity and directness, especially when the fundamental poetics of the piece would be compromised by superfluous ‘poetic’ refinements.” (R. Storr, ‘Bruce Nauman, the man who would not be king’, Modern Painters, pp. 42–47, 1 May 2009)

Roy Lichtenstein’s Untitled (Sheets of Studies for Leda & the Swan) shows a fusion of the style of the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, and the theme of Greek mythology. The drawing has a two-dimensional static quality reminiscent of 1930s art, in which a careful balance is observed in the relationship between verticals, diagonals, curves and straight edges, to achieve a feeling of dynamic movement as well as a frieze-like stillness. The theme of Leda and the Swan, based on the Greek myth of Leda who was seduced by Zeus in the form of a swan, gained popularity in the 16th century and was revisited in the 1960s by artists such as Cy Twombly and Hermann Nitsch. Lichtenstein’s drawing of studies shows his ability to understand the subject matter and the organization and division of space to create an energetic composition.

“I’d been working ten years and I still wasn’t known. So I wrote a joke on a piece of paper, and I’d invite people over and ask them, ‘Will you give me $10 for this?’ I knew I was onto something – if someone else had done it I would have been jealous. You couldn’t speculate about it. So much of art depends on the critic as the umpire. With a joke there’s nothing to interpret.” (S. Daly, Richard Prince as quoted in Vanity Fair, 2007)

“Richard Prince is hailed as a master of consumerist appropriation. But looking closer at his practice reveals an artist not situated on the periphery of culture and looking in, nor merely decrypting and intellectualizing societal codes. Rather, we find somebody in the thick of this very culture who enjoys what he sees, feels and senses, and who enthusiastically engages with its reality. Yes, he is appropriating. But first and foremost, he is expressing, reconstructing, readjusting, transforming, adding to and inviting the spectator to be seduced by and participate in the pleasure of this reality – Prince’s fiction.” (Gunnar B. Kraven ‘Richard Prince – Painter of Fiction’ in Richard Prince, Canaries in the Coal Mine, Oslo, 2006, p. 63)

catalogues may also be printed in US dollars and/or euros. Since the exchange rate is that at the time of catalogue production and not at the date of auction, you should treat estimates in US dollars or euros as a guide only. Catalogue entries Phillips de Pury & Company may print in the catalogue entry the history of ownership of a work of art, as well as the exhibition history of the property and references to the work in art publications. While we are careful in the cataloguing process, provenance, exhibition and literature references may not be exhaustive and in some cases we may intentionally refrain from disclosing the identity of previous owners. Please note that all dimensions of the property set forth in the catalogue entry are approximate. Condition of lots Our catalogues include references to condition only in the descriptions of multiple works (e.g., prints). Such references, though, do not amount to a full description of condition. The absence of reference to the condition of a lot in the catalogue entry does not imply that the lot is free from faults or imperfections. Solely as a convenience to clients, Phillips de Pury & Company may provide condition reports. In preparing such reports, our specialists assess the condition in a manner appropriate to the estimated value of the property and the nature of the auction in which it is included. While condition reports are prepared honestly and carefully, our staff are not professional restorers or trained conservators. We therefore encourage all prospective buyers to inspect the property at the pre-sale exhibitions and recommend, particularly in the case of any lot of significant value, that you retain your own restorer or professional advisor to report to you on the property’s condition prior to bidding. Any prospective buyer of photographs or prints should always request a condition report because all such property is sold unframed, unless otherwise indicated in the condition report. If a lot is sold framed, Phillips de Pury & Company accepts no liability for the condition of the frame. If we sell any lot unframed, we will be pleased to refer the purchaser to a professional framer. Pre-auction Viewing Pre-auction viewings are open to the public and free of charge. Our specialists are available to give advice and condition reports at viewings or by appointment. electrical and mechanical lots All lots with electrical and/or mechanical features are sold on the basis of their decorative value only and should not be assumed to be operative. It is essential that, prior to any intended use, the electrical system is verified and approved by a qualified electrician.
