Casey: Big Credit-Card Breach Needs Answers US Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) called on Global Payments, Inc. to be more forthcoming with consumers in the wake of a massive data breach that has left 1.5 million credit-card users exposed to hackers. After first revealing the breach to consumers last Friday, reports have indicated the company first knew about the problem in early March yet waited weeks to notify cardholders. In a letter to the Chairman and CEO of Global Payments, the Senator called on the company to immediately provide more information to exposed consumers and aid consumers in efforts to protect their private financial information. “Identity theft can do incredible damage to a family’s finances, so Global Payments must do all it can to ensure that exposed consumers are protected,” Casey said. “The fact Global Payments knew about the problem in early March and waited weeks to tell consumers is completely unacceptable. The company needs to take immediate steps to be more forthcoming with consumers and explain why it took so long to let Americans know that their personal financial information was compromised.” Global Payments is a Marylandbased company that provides payment-processing services to MasterCard and Visa cardholders, among others. Friday, the company revealed 50,000 consumers may have had their private financial in-
formation compromised by hackers. Estimates of those impacted have gone up, and now the company estimates as many as 1.5 million consumers could be impacted. In a letter, Casey called on the company to be more forthcoming and immediately aid any consumers whose identity was stolen.
In his letter, Casey wrote, “Unfortunately, in this case it appears a significant time period elapsed between the discovery of the theft and a public announcement. I request that you provide me with an explanation of this delay and the steps Global Payments has taken since discovering the breach.”
County Prisons Must Pay For Sex Discrimination The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission ordered the City of Philadelphia Prison System to pay Jill Toomer of Philadelphia $31,256 in back pay, plus interest, for discriminating against her based on her sex. The order took effect Mar. 27. “Employment decisions like promotions and hiring must be based on qualifications,” Commission Executive Director JoAnn Edwards said. “Basing such decisions on someone’s sex is illegal discrimination and subjects employers to legal penalties.”
City agreed to have both complaints considered in one public hearing. After full consideration of the hearing record in both matters, the commission dismissed Johnson’s complaint and held the prison system liable for sex discrimination in failing to promote Toomer. Race discrimination against Toomer was not established. The commission ordered the prison system to cease discriminating against employees based on their sex and to provide non-discrimination training for its staff.
Toomer’s complaint against the prison system alleged that she was denied a promotion based on her sex and race. Renee Johnson, also of Philadelphia, filed a similar complaint around the same time.
Toomer’s award of back pay of $31,256 includes 6% interest per annum from January 2003 until payment is made. To date, her total award comes to more than $48,600.
