2 Former Guvs Mull ‘Disappointing’ GOP Race Last night at the National Constitution Center, former Govs. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania and Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey offered contrasting perspectives and firsthand knowledge of Election 2012’s key players and issues. David Eisner, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, moderated. Both Rendell and Whitman expressed disappointment in the recent performance of GOP lawmakers. “The Republicans have done everything they could to screw this up for themselves. It’s been a clown show,” commented Rendell acidly.
President Barack Obama – a dig at his effective campaign slogan of 2008. But Obama’s top challenger former Gov. Mitt Romney fared no better at Rendell’s hands. “He should have showed leadership – and could have gained the respect of voters–by standing up when the crowd booed a gay soldier,” he said.
Whitman agreed that the Republican leaders’ performance has been “shameful.”
Whitman said that as a Republican woman, she is “embarrassed” about GOP leaders’ statements and actions pertaining to women’s issues, which Democrats and others have labeled a “War on Women.” Whitman said, “There are a whole lot of Republicans I would take out in a nanosecond because of the way they’ve talked about women.”
The two Governors shared some thoughts on how the leadership styles – and shortcomings – of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney could affect the campaign. “Well, he can’t run on hope and change,” Whitman noted of
The focus on the GOP’s efforts may be harming Romney’s chances at the polls; for example, a recent poll showed that the number of white female voters who favored Obama over Romney jumped by 8 percent in the
past month alone. Rendell offered Rick Santorum some simple advice for the Pennsylvania primary: “Get out.” He admitted it’s tempting to try to stay the course: “When you’re there, the limelight is intoxicating. It’s like heroin.” Both Whitman and Rendell agreed a key to addressing the partisan gridlock in Washington is for citizens to get out and vote. Whitman said, “A 10% voter turnout in a primary is just wrong, and it keeps us in this cycle of extremes. If you want to know what the problem is, look in the mirror.” Rendell agreed: “There’s only one remedy for Citizens United, and that’s a 70-80% turnout. That blows away Citizens United, that blows away lobbyists, that blows away the negative campaign ads.”

Larry Kane Slams Smith For Skipping Out On Show During Sunday’s broadcast of Larry Kane’s “Voice of Reason” on the Comcast Network, Kane said he was not happy with Tom Smith’s last-minute cancellation and called the move “unprecedented.” According to Kane, Smith originally could not attend the program’s first taping, so Kane arranged for a special taping. A day before the taping, Smith cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. Republican-endorsed US Senate candidate Steve Welch appeared on Kane’s program last

They said it was a scheduling conflict, even though he’s appearing in the Conshohocken area later this evening.” Throughout the primary election, Smith has skipped, rejected or cancelled on numerous high-profile events including:

Pa. NOW Endorses Murphy The Pennsylvania National Organization for Women has officially backed Iraq War veteran and former prosecutor Patrick Murphy for Pennsylvania Attorney General. PA NOW highlighted Murphy’s strong and consistent record on women’s issues in its endorsement. “A War on Women is being waged across the country, and unfortunately, it’s come here to Pennsylvania. Women across the Commonwealth need an advocate in the Attorney General’s office who will stand up and
fight for them. Patrick Murphy is the only one in this race willing to do what’s necessary to protect our rights and ensure full equality under the law,” said Julia Ramsey, president of PA NOW. “Patrick is a proven leader on women’s issue. He is someone we know and trust. He’s 100% pro-choice and will refuse to enforce the unconstitutional mandatory ultrasound bill. He helped strengthen laws that prohibit gender discrimination in the workplace. He believes all Pennsylvanians should have the same opportunities, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation. That is the type of experience we
need in an Attorney General.” “I’m honored to earn the support of the Pennsylvania National Organization for Women. I’ve always been proud to stand with PA NOW and other women’s organizations to protect a woman’s right to choose and fight for equality. I will continue to partner with PA NOW to defend women’s rights, end discrimination in the workplace and fight for equality. More than ever, we need to stand together and fight back against these vicious attacks on women’s rights,” Murphy said.
