It has been another excellent year for Lake Forest Academy as we continue to implement our strategic plan, Lighting the Fire: Educating Citizens of the World. During the past year, we expanded the development of LFA’s campus with the addition of the spectacular Crown Fitness & Wellness Center, which, together with the James P. Fitzsimmons Athletic Wing that opened a year earlier, create a magnificent athletics complex for our students. In addition, we have completed the relocation and renovation of Durand House—now renamed Weinbrenner House—containing six faculty apartments. During the summer and using the funds generously donated at our Spring Gala, we have also renovated the two North Cottages faculty residences and enhanced the function of the Cressey Auditorium with additional seating. Looking forward, we anticipate the completion in January 2012 of our new girls’ dormitory, Ferry Hall, with its 36 beds and 4 faculty family apartments, as well as the construction of a new faculty residence in West Village. The campus is being transformed, which helps LFA attract and retain the highest quality students and faculty.

I am very proud to reflect on the performance and experiences of the LFA students as they engage and succeed in a rigorous academic program within an environment based on small classes, superior teaching, and student-centred learning. The school has made progress beyond its physical plant by implementing key developments in the academic program. August saw the introduction of a oneto-one iPad program at LFA with each student receiving a personal iPad for use in the classroom. LFA faculty have used the summer to develop class and study applications for the iPads. The 2011–12 academic year promises to be an innovative one for students and teachers alike. In addition, LFA continues to improve and enhance its curricular offerings with the redesign of the Freshman Foundation in the Arts course and the introduction of new cross-curricular and experiential initiatives. It is exciting to witness the ongoing evolution and development of LFA’s academic program as we meet the vision of our strategic plan. Finally, it is important to recognise that facilities enhancements and program developments mean little if the student outcomes don’t parallel that improvement. In that regard, I am very proud to reflect on the performance and experiences of the LFA students as they engage and succeed in a rigorous academic program within an environment based on small classes, superior teaching, and studentcentred learning. Within the LFA program, our students challenge themselves to complete a sophisticated, college-preparatory curriculum while gaining exposure to an understanding of multiculturalism and pluralism. LFA student scores on the Advanced Placement examinations have steadily improved during the past five years, and an increasing number of our students participate in programs and experiences outside the United States. This academic and global exposure prepares our graduates for very successful college placements and college careers. As I look back on my first decade as Head of School at LFA, I am very proud of both the history of the school and what the Academy has achieved in the past ten years. The recent developments and improvements point to a very exciting future for the school. I thank the entire LFA family for your past support and welcome you to join me as I look forward to witnessing the school’s further growth and development.

Alumni Events are Heating Up The last several months have seen a lot of alumni events for the graduates of Lake Forest Academy and Ferry Hall. A cocktail party in the home of Kelly Perine ’87 gave our Los Angeles based alumni a fun place to chat and make new friends and business connections, while enjoying the beauty of a classic old Hollywood home. DC area Ferry Hall ladies got together to enjoy brunch and discuss the building of Ferry Hall, and the great strides Lake Forest Academy has made in the last ten years to keep the history and significance of Ferry Hall vibrant on campus.

Hall of Fame The LFA-FH Hall of Fame was founded in 1980 to honor those individuals who earned distinction in one of three categories: Outstanding Achievement and Service to Society, Service to the School, and Achievement in Athletics. Plaques honoring the recipients to date hang in the Corbin Academic Wing.

Ferry Tales Dean of External Relations Experiences Strong Bonds of Ferry Hall Firsthand I had the distinct pleasure of joining Jeremiah Stevens, Director of Alumni Relations and six Washington DC area Ferry Hall alumni on Sunday, June 26th in Rockville Maryland for brunch. What a treat! What was particularly fascinating to me, was that few of the six women were close friends but each shared a common experience with the others that was both palpable and heart-warming—a sincere affection for Ferry Hall. The women spanned classes 1943 to 1971, but what they had in common and what they spoke about were the same themes I’ve heard time and time again—how strong faculty members mentored them, encouraged their intellectual pursuits, and fostered warm and solid relationship with all of them and their classmates.

Most importantly, they talked about the life skills they learned at Ferry Hall; about the life altering experiences they had in the classroom, in the dorms, and on the athletic fields. Their friendships were and still are profound. Their memories are keen and continue to endure today. They wish for young women today to have the same experience they had. That’s where I came in, assuring them that, in fact, our female students at Lake Forest Academy are indeed having a similar, and in some ways better, experience at the Academy today than they would or Ferry Hall Advisory could have dreamed when they were Board Members Chair students at Ferry Hall. Our female students at LFA are smart, energetic, active, engaged, and making the most of their experience at LFA. They see no limits to what they can accomplish, and they graduate with a strong sense of self, understanding that they have the ability to achieve and succeed at whatever they attempt. Ferry Hall Dorm construction is well underway! The 36 bed girls’ dormitory will include 4 faculty apartments and greatly improve the quality of housing for our female students. The dorm will also solidify the deep history shared with Ferry Hall and ensure the school’s legacy remains a part of Lake Forest Academy’s for future generations. girls softball
The boys varsity baseball team, coached by Dave Wick, went 7-12 this year. Three LFA varsity baseball players were named to the 2011 Pioneer Press All-Lake Shore Team: Eric Clamage ’11 (also named the team’s MVP), Keenan Johnson ’11, and Graham Wick ’12. Three graduating seniors will play in college: Clamage (Furman), Johnson (Indiana), and Nick Ustaski (Lawrence). Team awards included: Clamage (ace pitcher), Johnson (best defensive player and baserunner), Julian Rutkowski ’11 (most dedicated), Utaski (top power hitter), and Wick (top hitter).
The girls softball team, coached by Darrin Madeley, went 4-8 this year. Seniors Mariel Rogozinski, Jenna Madeley, Ose Jackson, Lizett Meraz, and Alexa Wilson led the team made up of 12 underclassmen. On the field Madeley, Melissa Mahoney ’13, Emily Meyer ’14, and Rogozinski led the way offensively each batting over .300. Beverly Li ’12 and Priscilla Shi ’12 carried the majority of the pitching duties.
Though the season record is not as impressive as hoped for, the team took on a number of bigger opponents and gave them a run for their money. With a roster of only twelve varsity players, including two freshmen and a sophomore, the team held their own against some perennial baseball powerhouses. The seniors will be missed, but some younger players are moving up to take over. Eric Bauer ’12
Girls Soccer The girls soccer team had a very successful year, although due Chicago weather they were unable to defend the Antioch Invitational or the LFA Soccer Classic. During the course of the season, the girls proved themselves by beating eventual 3 Regional Champions as well as a State Semi Finalist. The team once again solidified itself as one of the top small school teams in the state. This year’s team was senior driven with 8 senior starters: Joanie Davis, Lindsay Hanig, Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Moon, Samantha Nelson, Ella Petersen, Erin Petersen, and Georgina Wagemann. We had great performances as well from our underclassmen Margaux Boles ’14, Sarah Clark ’12, Kate Diaz ’14, Corry Lane ’12, Erica Lewis ’12, Jaclyn Meyers ’13, Lauren Stevenson ’13, and Whitney Wright ’13. Wagemann won All Sectional Honors as well as All Lake County Honors and will be playing for Yale University next fall, both Davis and Nelson recieved Honorable Mention All Sectional, and Kennedy was the LFA MVP for the 2011 season.

boys tennis Mother Nature proved to be a most formidable foe for the Caxy Tennis squad this spring. Though the weather prompted nine cancellations, the Caxys fared well in the matches they did get to play. In fact, the team posted a 6-3 record in headto-head contests and more than held their own in two larger invitationals. Senior captains David Lin, Rob McNerney, and Mark Yingling provided great leadership. A newcomer to the program, junior AJ Jayakumar, gamely took on the daunting task of playing in the one singles position all year. At two singles, freshman Andy Xia consistently demonstrated that he will be a force to reckon with during his LFA career. track The girls track team finished 5-1. The girls had many great meets, including the Beloit Invitational, finishing 5th. Sophia Smith ’12 won the 1600 and 3200, and Nina Varilla ’12 also won a medal in the 800 at that meet. The girls also took 5th out of 11 teams at the Palmyra Invitational. Jessica Kaminski ’11 shined at this meet in particular. At the Lake County invitational, Smith finished 6th in the 3200, breaking her own school record. Other shining stars this season were Allie Cedergren ’13, Meg Kennedy ’13, Mercedes Nagel ’13, Beverly Onyekwuluje ’11, and Penny Tornes ’14. The boys track team finished 4-1. The Palmyra Invitational was a highlight as the boys team took 2nd out of 10 teams. Taylor Click ’12, Spencer Friske ’12, and Rickey Larke ’11 stood out at the meet. The boys team had a good meet at Beloit as well, with Matt Pinel ’12 taking 3rd in the discus. Some of the boys team went to the County meet, with Click continued on page 14... sports shorts

setting a new school record in the 800 (2nd place in the county) and Friske setting a new record in the 3200 run. Quai Chandler ’12 and Larke finished in the top 8 in the county in the both the 100 and 200 dashes.
The boys varsity volleyball team, coached by Jeff Bateman, was in a rebuilding year, ending the season with a 4-10 record. It was a difficult task to replace six veteran seniors from the previous year. The Caxys played hard and had many shining moments of improvement. Matt Payne ’11, a first year player as a senior, learned the game fast and was voted the MVP. Brian Berry ’12, Casey Coulter ’12, and Will Stolarski ’12 were bright spots as outside hitters. Rich Barber ’12, a first year player, learned the game quickly and was an impact player in the middle hitter position. Kyle Skinner ’13 did a nice job setting for the team throughout the season. Frank Senese ’12 was a solid force as a defensive specialist in the back row. Zach Fader ’11 was the most improved player this year and was able to play all the way around both offensively and defensively. The team looks forward to the 2011-2012 season and the return of many solid players.

This concept is the cornerstone for the new interdisciplinary program debuting for ninth graders this fall. The Freshman Foundation in the Arts, a program first begun in 2003, is a required course for all ninth graders, and seemed a natural place to begin cross-curricular exploration. “We really wanted to explore how the arts could support what other subjects are teaching, and also allow more cross-over between the visual and performing arts,” explains art teacher Lauren Fowler. The Freshman Foundation in the Arts will have ninth graders in various sections working on similar projects— projects that support the work being done in their other classes. FFA teachers plan to particularly utilize the flexibility of their curricula to support other subject matters.

This summer, a group of teachers from across various disciplines spent a significant amount of time investigating “cross-overs” in their subject areas and planning their ninth grade curriculum to capitalize on those “cross-overs.” What do the visual arts have to do with mathematics? More than you might think. Are there parallels one can draw between English and physics? Absolutely. “Different teachers are working together than would normally work together,” relates photography instructor Nick Smith. He believes this will deepen and enrich each student’s learning experience, because his/her teachers will know what’s going on in other classes.
The idea to explore more interdisciplinary teaching at LFA stemmed from a professional development opportunity. In 2009, Dr. Kathie Nunely visited the school and gave a talk to the faculty about the adolescent brain, and how reinforcing concepts through various subject matters increases the likelihood that a student will gain mastery of that concept. One concept that will be explored this fall is symbolism. In English 9, each class learns about symbolism and how that plays itself out in literature. Additionally, the arts will study symbolism used in Chinese and Islamic calligraphy while learning to create their own symbols with sumi brushes and India ink. Students studying Chinese will look at representations of symbolism in Chinese literature. Math students will see how mathematical concepts are symbolized. As Smith explains, it’s coming at the concept from multiple avenues, rather than just one. “I hope that this program will make a significant difference for this group of kids and be beneficial to them at this point in their development” Smith explains. Fowler is most looking forward to the connections between subject areas that she hopes her students point out to her, ones that perhaps the teachers hadn’t thought of. “I went to a big public high school so we had nothing like this,” remarks Fowler, “it’s really exciting to be a part of planning it.” Stay tuned to the school website for developments on the program.

What Do I Do NOW? By Jack Schweighauser ’11
“ I’d like to think that I’m going off to college feeling pretty comfortable in my own skin, thanks to LFA.” After switching gears from the frenzy of AP exams, end of year concerts, and all the graduation events, I’ve finally had a chance to reflect on my experience at LFA and where it has taken me. I’ve been lucky enough to spend some time traveling in Europe this summer after graduation, and have also been volunteering as a counselor at the Nuestro camp. LFA’s emphasis on community service led me to start a program teaching guitar to elementary school kids at the Nuestro Center my junior year, so I jumped at the chance to continue working with some of the same kids I had gotten to know through my lessons at this summer’s camp in Highwood. I hope to find a way to continue using my musical talents in the local community surrounding Williams College, which I will be attending this fall. When I began the college search process, I was looking to duplicate many of the things I found at LFA, including challenging academics, small class size, close relationships inside and outside the classroom with teachers, the freedom to explore new opportunities and the chance to step out of my comfort zone. Williams was a perfect fit (especially with its Oxford-style tutorial program), and my four years here at LFA have prepared me well for that type of liberal arts education. The amazing opportunities I’ve
had performing on stage with Co-ax and the orchestra, acting and singing in the winter musical, conducting all-school morning meetings as a Prefect, or preparing and debating political arguments in the “We the People” competition have all given me incredible confidence. I’d like to think that I’m going off to college feeling pretty comfortable in my own skin, thanks to LFA. Although I’m hoping to try a number of new subjects in college such as geology or religion, I’ll likely double major in math or economics/political economy and music, areas of study that I really enjoyed at LFA. Additionally, I’ve decided to study Spanish (after finishing a full cycle of French at LFA) in order to improve my language skills with the kids I teach. I’m planning to continue my study of guitar and trumpet, and take advantage of all the musical performance opportunities Williams has to offer. Right now, however, my biggest challenge is figuring out how to fit all my instruments in my parents’ car for the drive out to Massachusetts. What will I miss most about LFA? All those crazy nicknames my friends and I came up with for our favorite faculty. I think I may have to come back and share them!

1978 Tom Wood has now lived in Japan for 11 years. He reports that the past year has been difficult with the earthquake and all, but the country is rebuilding. His kids are growing up fast, now 12, 11, 6, and 5. He is in his 25th year at Morgan Stanley. Cappy Lau Pontrelli hosted her parents “Dick and Jayne” from Abu Dhabi, UAE for a summer vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Lau work at the Petroleum Institute University in Abu Dhabi teaching Chemistry and English respectively.

2010 Charlie Nesler just completed his first year at Macalester College where he was on the dean’s list both semesters. He is currently in Spain, where he is studying Flamenco guitar at the Taller Flamenco Conservatory in Seville.
2005 Asona Lui Asona received her master’s in biology from Chicago State University. She presented her thesis to the American Association of Immunologists in San Francisco in April. In August, she began at University of Kansas’ seven year dual degree program to earn her MD/PhD.

Moving Up By Georgiana Wagemann ’11 While most people reflect on their high school graduation as the central moment symbolizing their journey, what stands out most in my mind is Move Up Day. As I was walking with my class toward the seats labeled “Alumni,” it was impossible to believe that in three short months we would be heading off to college. Despite the nerves culminating from the unpredictability that the next few months would present, I was comforted by the fact that I was now an alumna and I would always remain a part of the community that propelled me towards realizing my collegiate goals. For many reasons, my experiences at LFA are what helped me make the ultimate decision regarding college. The Academy taught me to appreciate the benefits of small class sizes, to feel comfortable asking teachers for help, and to maintain one’s independence while simultaneously being included in a larger communityall qualities that I value in a university. Still, what really drove me to choose Yale was the experience of playing a varsity sport at LFA. Because I had played club soccer throughout my elementary and middle school years, the idea of playing soccer with my classmates was completely foreign to me. As an intimidated newcomer my freshman year, I not only played soccer with my freshmen friends, but also met older girls that could teach us the ropes. Heading straight from classes to Sonia’s snack bar and then to the Crown Center to gear up for a game showed me how much I enjoy the interconnectedness between academics and athletics. I found the same quality in Yale and look forward to both utilizing its academic resources and playing soccer in a competitive program. Personally, the little memories of the Academy are the ones that will prove the most lasting.
“ I was now an alumna and I would always remain a part of the community that propelled me towards realizing my collegiate goals.” The all-school handshakes, lunches with friends at Hutch and free periods in the senior square (or in the garden on a hot spring afternoon) are just a few. I am most excited about seeing my friends, who spent all those times with me, continue with their journeys and excel at their
respective schools. Although it will be difficult to say goodbye to friends, I know that they hold the same valued memories and that none of us will ever be able to truly say goodbye to each other or to LFA.

John “Jack” Foster Bales, II, of Highstown, New Jersey, died June 3, 2011. He was 100. After graduating from the Academy, Jack went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University in 1934. At Princeton, Jack starred as an All-American tail back on the University’s undefeated National Champion football team of 1933. Jack then joined the Prophylactic Brush Company as a junior sales trainee and traveled through the South during the Depression selling tooth and hair brushes to drug stores. In 1944, he was hired by Johnson & Johnson as the Director of their Tek Division and rose to the position of Executive Vice President of its TekHughes subsidiary. At the height of his business career, Jack served as Chairman and President of Yardley of London, Inc., headquartered in New York City, and was the architect of the “London Look,” which swept the cosmetic industry in the 1960s. After his business career, Jack immersed himself in community affairs. For many years he served as a Trustee and Vice President of the Princeton Public Library and as President of the Friends of the Library. Jack is remembered as a strong and thoughtful man with a wonderful common touch, quick wit, and gracious manner. He spent his life fully engaged in the lives of others, and he left an indelible impact on his family and many friends and on his wide range of community and business interests. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean. Jack is survived by 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
1935 William “Bill” J. Croker, Jr., of Iowa City, Iowa, died April 21, 2011. He was 92. After graduation from the Academy, Bill graduated from Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. At Northwestern, he met his wife, Mary Esther Moulton, who hired him as a sports reporter for the Daily Northwestern and accompanied him on their first date to the sixday bicycle races. Bill became the night sports editor and an announcer on Northwestern Radio in 1937. After graduation, he was a news editor at WGN Chicago radio station and spent sixteen straight hours covering the attack on Pearl Harbor. Later, he was the program direc-
tor and head announcer at Marquette, MI. In 1943, he returned as the news editor at WGN and then transitioned to the newly established Chicago Sun-Times, Sun Radio Air Edition, and later the Associated Press (AP) Chicago Bureau. Also in 1943, he entered the Army and served in the Pacific in the 40th Division. Post-war he returned to the Associated Press and covered the Truman White House as an AP correspondent. In 1948, he was founding manager of radio station KDEC in Decorah, Iowa. Subsequently, he served as advertising manager of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. Bill was the advertising manager of Sun Newspapers in the Minneapolis, MN, and relocated to Grundy Center, Iowa, where he was the advertising director of the Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman until his retirement. Bill was an avid golfer, squash, table tennis, tennis player and lover of Big Bands. He served as president of several local Rotary Club International chapters and was an active member of Presbyterian churches in Dubuque, Grundy Center and Iowa City. Bill is survived by is wife, and 2 children. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara.
1945 James “Jim” Kenneth Gourley, Sr., of Kenosha, Wisconsin, died June 22, 2011. He was 83. At Lake Forest Academy he captained the 1945 baseball team. In 1944 and 1945 he had try outs with the Chicago Cubs. Jim worked at the Southport Lumber Company, a family owned business. In 1966, he established Lawn Masters, Inc. He also built the first fast oil change business in 1970. He patented Westmac residential core aerators sold in 44 states and Canada. He served as president of the Photomark Corp., establishing Fotomats in the Midwest. As a member of the Lake Forest Academy Alumni Council, he served for several years as its treasurer. He established the Kiwanis Boys Baseball League, was a member of the Elks Lodge 750, and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Western Kenosha. In 1969, he was named the Kiwanis Man of the Year. He loved to spend his spare time with his wife and family at their Twin Lakes home and on their boat. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter; 3 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 4 step-children; 9 stepgrandchildren; and 3 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister.

Donald “Don” P. Rothschild, of Ft. Myers, Florida, died February 28, 2011. He was 83. After graduating from the Academy, Don went on to study law at Toledo University Law School and pursue graduate studies at Harvard University. He taught at George Washington University and New York Law School. Don was a renowned Labor Arbitrator having established the first Consumer Protection Clinic at George Washington University. He was an artist and author having written half dozen books on Labor and Consumer Law as well as memoirs and a novel. His other activities included being a member of BIG Arts of Sanibel, a member of one of the writers groups on Sanibel, Current Events Discussion Group on Sanibel, and Temple Bat Yam where he had served as a former Board Member. He is survived by his wife Ruth; 3 children; and 4 grandchildren.
1948 Nancy Ehrlicher Goad, of Evanston, died on June 30, 2011. She was 82. Nancy graduated from Ferry Hall in 1948. Her family was her primary joy. She is survived by her husband, John; 3 children; 9 grandchildren; and 5 greatgrandchildren.
1952 Eleanor “Onie” Feight Flood, of Flowood, Missouri, died May 19, 2010. She was 76. Onie attended Ferry Hall and went on to Bennett College. Eleanore was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Missouri. She was a member of the Junior League, helped start the Pro’s at the First Presbyterian church, and worked on many committees with the First Presbyterian Day School. She was also a long standing member of the Women in the Church and was honored with a Life Membership award. She is survived by her husband, John; 6 children; and 11 grandchildren.
1955 Reginald “Reg” Michael Norris, Jr., of Sharon, Connecticut, died April 21, 2011. He was 74. Following graduation from the Academy, Reg completed his military service obligation. He then pursued a business degree at New York University. He worked over the years for Banker’s
Trust, REA Express, Diversified Mortgage Investors, Interway, and Transamerica. For the past 20 years, he worked as a consultant helping small companies with financial and partnership issues. He is survived by his wife, Sue; 2 sons; and 2 grandchildren.

As LFA launches its one-to-one iPad program this fall for students and faculty, it happens to be exactly 30 years since the school’s first “Apple upgrade,” 1980s-style. In 1981, LFA abandoned its circa 1977 model PDP-11 computer with three terminals for a lab full of Bell & Howell Apple II Plus microcomputers. These new Apple IIs each had an 8 bit 6502 CPU running at one megahertz, 48KB of memory, and a 5 ¼ inch floppy drive holding 140KB. While this is primitive by today’s standards, it was state-of-the-art back then! At that time, U.S. schools were required to purchase microcomputers that were UL certified, which excluded the Apple II Plus because it failed to automatically power down when its case was opened. To reach the education market, Apple licensed Bell & Howell to put Apple II Plus models in cases that met UL requirements for sale to schools. These Bell & Howell designed cases were black rather than beige, and became known as the “Black Apples” or “Darth Vader” models.

Gala Funds Support Faculty Housing “I think I want to keep my walls pretty bare, just a couple of pictures,” explains Angela Zhou of her design plans for her new room. The Jiang/Zhou family—consisting of Chinese instructor Ivy Jiang, her husband Liangfu Zhou and their two daughters Katie, 13, and Angela, 11,— just moved into one of the two newly renovated North Cottages on campus. The renovations of the now three bedroom, two and a half bath homes were funded entirely by money raised at the Spring Gala in April. At the heart of the LFA experience, is the close connections between faculty and students. Ivy relates that she loves living on campus because of how well she gets to know the students—even those not taking Chinese. Providing excellent faculty housing allows LFA to attract and retain the highest caliber teachers from diverse backgrounds. It is also the cornerstone of the close-knit community feeling on campus. Currently, housing is only available for about 69% of faculty. Remaining true to its boarding school culture, the school hopes to increase this percentage over the coming years. This is possible, of course, with the tremendous support of donors. The overwhelming response from donors at the Spring Gala showed clearly that the members of our community are committed to providing excellent faculty housing. The $555,568 raised is a testament to the commitment from the school’s donors and the school is incredibly grateful. Additionally, funds were used to expand seating in The Cressey Theater to better accommodate the now larger LFA community. As for the Jiang/Zhous, they’re enjoying settling into their new, larger place. A space that was reserved for a dining room table may soon be filled with an additional piano as the girls—both pianists—like to play duets, each on her own instrument.

June 30 The 2010–11 Academy Fund exceeded its goal! The events and many accomplishments of the school year were made possible by the $1,313,504 raised.
Endowment Fund Independent schools like Lake Forest Academy maintain their financial sustainability through wise operational management and prudent fiscal policies, bolstered by generous support from loyal members of the school community. That financial support is most evident when you look at the growth of the LFA Endowment Fund in recent years. As of June 30, 2011, the value of the LFA Endowment Fund was $ $23,228,608 and during the 2010–11 school year, the fund distributed $972,826 in support of the school’s operating budget.
The school’s 2008 Strategic Plan calls for an Endowment Fund of $50M, so the Board of Trustees places high priority on growth of the Fund and has charged the Campaign Resource Committee with that responsibility. As the fundraising strategies are defined, it is clear that growth must come from current gifts as well as deferred gifts from loyal school supporters. It is hoped that the LFA community will respond with generous foresight and support the school’s Endowment Fund Growth Initiative with generous gifts for a financially sustainable future.
The LFA Endowment Fund is vital to the long term financial sustainability of the school. Through gifts to the current capital campaign, the fund has received gifts in excess of $9M in the past 6 years, with recent bequests from Marguerite Hubert Sherwin FH ’30 and George Weinbrenner ’39 exceeding $2M alone! Endowment Fund growth comes from three basic sources:
Oversight of the LFA Endowment Fund is provided by the Board with Trustee Stephen Brewster serving as Chair of the Endowment Subcommittee of the Finance Committee. Management is provided professionally by The Northern Trust and Commonfund of Connecticut.

Planned Giving The Richards & Tremain Society was founded in 1988 to recognize those members of the LFA community who have made provisions for LFA in their estate plans. Through planned giving you can design a gift that will be most advantageous to both you and LFA.
