25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: BUILDING A WRITING COMMUNITY Philadelphia Writing Project celebrates 25 years of teachers teaching teachers on Saturday, October 22, 2011, with daytime workshops, discussions, and performances followed by an evening gala dinner. Representative Chaka Fattah will be honored for his support of the Philadelphia Writing Project. Philadelphia (August 2011)—Educators, authors, and community leaders will gather on Saturday, October 22, 2011, to celebrate the work of Philadelphia Writing Project teacher consultants and the work they have done with Philadelphia children and communities. For 25 years, the Philadelphia Writing Project has been the region’s most prominent teacher network, serving over 1,000 teachers each year and reaching over 93,000 students. The celebration will begin with a festival featuring writing of students, teachers, and authors from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Winners of the 2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and other performers will share their work. Karen E. Quinones Miller, a best selling author will share her passion for writing and be on hand to encourage young writers to continue to hone their craft. Elizabeth Gilly, from the Moore College of Art Literacy through Photography Project will spotlight the photographs and writing of Philadelphia students who have used visual literacy as a tool for learning across the disciplines. Guests will enjoy a workshop on literacy and photography and will also be invited to tour the Penn Museum’s new Imagine Africa exhibit and participate in a writing marathon. The event is free with admission/donation to the Penn Museum. Community members, teachers, families, supporters of education, and members of the press are invited to attend. The celebration will continue in the evening with a gala dinner at 6:00 pm. Founding directors, Judy Buchanan and Susan Lytle, will be the guests of honor. Representative Chaka Fattah will be honored for his support of the Writing Project and other programs that impact students and families. Elyse Eidman-Aadahl, Director of National Programs and Site Development for the National Writing Project, will deliver the keynote address. The festivities will include a jazz ensemble, tributes, and readings by teachers who represent the 25-year history of the Philadelphia Writing Project. The gala will be held at the Inn At Penn, 3680 Walnut Street. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will be available online at www.gse.upenn.edu/philwp.

The Philadelphia Writing Project, located at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, is a site of the National Writing Project.
