Provisional results 2006  GCSE and equivalent 5A*-C results have improved again to 57.5% compared to 56.6% last year. This exceeds our target of 56%. All but one school in the City has achieved the national floor target of at least 25%. Birmingham’s results are likely to remain the highest of all the large urban authorities and similar to the national average.  Key Stage 3 Maths L5+ results have improved by 3% to 70%, achieving the 2006 target. Science results improved by 2% to 63% and ICT by 3% to 67%. However, English results have dropped by 3% to 66%. English results have also dropped nationally this year.  Key Stage 2 English L4+ results have improved by 2% to 76%, just short of the 2006 target of 77%. Maths results improved by 1% to 71% but fall short of the 77% target. Science results remain the same (83%) Key Stage 1 Reading , Writing and Maths L2+ results all fell slightly this year, as was the case nationally. In Birmingham, Reading dropped 1% to 78%, Writing dropped 2% to 74% and maths dropped 2% to 85%. A key factor specific to Birmingham may be demographic changes, particularly an increase in new arrivals with English as an additional language (e.g. Somali children).
